good wednesday morning. 4:30. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are following breaking news in san francisco this morning. a smash and grab, the lower pacific heights neighborhood. we have a crew on the scene. we'll bring you an update in just a minute. >> first, though, let's get a warm welcome back to meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you, sam and laura. good morning to you at home. it's a little chilly out there. thank you for that warm welcome back. we've got a warm day ahead. but you want to make sure and grab a jacket first things first. 46 in san carlos. we're at 39 degrees to kick off the new day in half-moon bay. so temperatures are going to be about five degrees warmer than yesterday, and that warming trend continues into your all-important weekend which is just around the corner now. we'll have the forecast for that, plus rain returns. we'll talk about that coming up. first let's talk to mike about your morning drive. >> welcome back. five degrees, a little bit warmer, but still cold for these folks out there. the road crews are just off the

roadway blocking your slow lane. the road crews out there still finishing up their overnight work. approaching the dublin interchange. the live shot, no problem. same thing approaching the bay bridge. back to you guys. >> thank you very much, mike. we do start with breaking news. a smash and grab at yet another san francisco electronics store. >> stephanie chuang live in san francisco. what have you learned so far this morning? >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. we just got here moments ago. this is book and steiner. the website says it's a high end audio and video equipment store. you can see where the criminals broke into this store. i can still see the crackling of this glass. i did not get the chance to talk to police yet, but i did hear from a guy who says he witnessed the entire thing happen. he saw three people, at least one of them, a guy hopping into

a red pickup truck that was pulled in front of the store, that they smashed through here, went in, grabbed what they could and hopped back into the truck. he mentioned that they had everything covered up, beanies, bandannas, trench coat-like attire so he couldn't see their faces and that red pickup truck had a license plate that was covered up. you see the police tape. they actually just put this up to make sure that nobody stepped into this. so a lot still to understand in terms of we don't know what was taken here and who was behind it. police are here and they're talking to a couple different witnesses. so that's the very latest from here. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, steph. also breaking in san francisco, firefighters are cleaning up after a fire near the famed aquerello restaurant. it turned out to be a trash fire

in the garage of the building. they had to break the door of aquerello to check for damage inside. thankfully, nobody was hurt. a young father's murder is sparking outrage in oakland. the family of marcus west stood outside the home where he lived in the oakland hills last night. he lived there with his grandmother. yesterday morning, someone shot him as he stood near his car. his grandmother could only watch as he died. >> i told him, marcus, you know, we love you, everybody loves you. pray. are you praying? and his face, the muscles sort of relaxed. he couldn't talk, of course, and i said pray, marcus. and then i prayed. and then he did that and that was it. >> he is the father of a 2-month-old son. police have not made any arrests. police in gilroy are searching this morning for a

teenager in connection to a homicide investigation. they've just arrested a second suspect. investigators served an awarrant for his arrest. the 17-year-old girl shown in this picture right here is believed to be one of two people captured on camera accused of using the victim's credit cards at an east san jose store. the other person in that video was already facing charges. new details about a deadly shooting in antioch. police have arrested tony belfield on murder charges. kimberly saunders and richard ludlow are accused of being an accessory to murder. officers spotted the three people inside the car leaving the homicide scene late monday night. a short chase ensued and the car crashed into a home. they were all arrested outside of that home.

new details this morning about last week's commuter train crash in southern california. the train's engineer has died. he was one of 30 people injured last tuesday when that train hit a pickup truck. he's the first victim to die. police initially arrested the truck's driver, but ended up releasing him without charges. oxnard's assistant police chief says the death changes the entire nature of the investigation and could lead to vehicular manslaughter charges. victims of the deadly plane crash at sfo have scored a legal victory. the settlements include compensation from boeing and the company that made the faulty evacuation slides. three people died in that crash. call it the case of trail rage. parks officials say a fight between a biker and a hiker september a woman to the hospital. a man on a bike grazed her going

the opposite direction. they exchanged some heated words and she chased after him, leading to a physical confrontation. investigators say the woman went to the hospital with bruises on her arms, legs, and head. deputies are now looking for the cyclist. the trail remains open. >> this morning, several companies are promising fixes for a massive security flaw on internet browsers. researchers just released their findings on something called the freak attack. one expert says that apple web browsers and google's android browser are vulnerable to this. apple will reportedly release a fix next week and google says it's already provided the fix to manufacturers and to wireless carriers. that flaw basically makes people vulnerable to hackers when they're just browsing the web. researchers say you can blame it on an old u.s. government policy requiring u.s. software manufacturers to use less secure encryption programs on items shipped overseas. that policy, though, no longer exists. but the weaker software spread

and eventually made its way back to the u.s. some government agencies like the white house, the fbi, and the national security agency are particularly vulnerable. corporate sites are also scrambling right now to try and fix this flaw. there's no evidence that anyone has actually executed a freak attack. it is 4:38 right now. our drought news, unfortunately just got worse. snow levels in the sierra are at record lows. the water content of the snow statewide is now 19% of average this year, that is near the 18% record that was set back in 1991. they did the snow check yesterday. the dismal number actually comes in despite a weekend storm that dropped as many as five inches of snow. just proved to be not enough what we needed. some big juicy storms to come through. and some cold in the sierra as well. >> yes.

you're watching "today in the bay." >> a very good wednesday morning to you. it is 4:45 right now. opening statements begin this morning in the long-anticipated boston marathon bombing trial. it took two months, but yesterday a jury was finally seated in the trial against dzhokh dzhokhar tsarnaev. he faces 30 charges, about half of which are punishable by death. the u.s. justice department today will release a scathing report exposing the history of racial bias and profiling in ferguson, missouri. the department launched that probe in response to last year's shooting of michael brown.

investigators found ferguson police habitually violated the civil rights of african-americans there. investigators uncovered a pattern of unfair traffic stops, questionable arrests and unreasonable use of force. the supreme court justices will hear a case that could shred the foundations of president obama's health care program. the case hinges on whether americans ensured through healthcare.gov are entitled to tax credits. if the high court agrees with the claim, millions of healthcare.gov recipients may pull out of the exchange. some fear that would send premiums skyrocketing and the affordable care act scrambling to survive. do you stream your video content? we know the competition is abounding. nbc getting into the mix. landon dowdy joins us live at cnbc's world headquarters with what the network is planning to offer, plus a look at how futures are trading this

morning. good morning. >> futures are lower today. the nasdaq failing to hold that 5,000 level. investors reacting to weaker than expected auto sales, which were hurt by the bad weather last month and looking ahead to economic data out this week. private sector job growth and the nation's services sector. now falling 85 points, the nasdaq dropping 28 to 4979. nbc reportedly plans to launch a comedy-focused video streaming service later this year. it would bundle new episodes of "the tonight show" and "saturday night live" with original shows and content. reports say it could cost as low as $2.50 a month and users could get access to clips before they show up on youtube. and sony plans to start selling project morphius next year. the headset works with the play station 4's console and camera, simulating the eyes.

i might just do it. >> a man who likes a challenge. my favorite meme was "you do you, left shark, you do you." taking a live look here at san jose, twinkling lights, beautiful start to the day, although it's a little bit chilly out there. zero fog to report at this point. you're at 47 in san francisco. 43 degrees right here at home in san jose. temperatures are beginning to be in the mid to low 60s at noon, so you'll probably still need a jacket at that point and we'll round out the day very close to 70 degrees just about everywhere. uniform temperatures out there today. 69 degrees for the north bay. the high in san francisco is 67 and 68 degrees in the tri-valley. highs still coming in at 3:00 p.m. as you may recall, we've got the time change. spring forward as of sunday. clear and cold to start this morning. warm by five to ten degrees. an additional five degrees. and we'll level off in the low 70s for the weekend. then rain returns as we get into

next week. sunday, things peak at about 75 degrees right here in the south bay. in the mid 70s as well in san francisco before the changes move in. we've got at least three to four days with some really good rain chances for next week. starting tuesday at 1:00 p.m., we continue that future cast, take you into wednesday and thursday, shower danchances get better. i think thursday could provide generous rainfall, which we really need. so that's the good news. there's definitely rain in the forecast as we head into next week. we'll take a closer look at that for where you live as we head throughout the morning together. now back to you. >> welcome back, christina. people in the east coast are bracing for another storm. more than half a dozen states are expected to be hit with another blast of winter. many states are still digging out after the last round of snow. all-new video this morning of a turkish airlines plane that

skidded right off the runway. this plane trying to land in dense fog in nepal. officials say there were 238 people on that flight. the passengers had bumps and bruises, but nothing worse. a new warning for parents this morning. dream on me is recalling 13,000 of these two-in-one bassinet to cradles. because of possible suffocation hazards. it was sold on a number of websites including amazon, wal-mart, and toys 'r' us. if you have the bassinet, contact the company for a free repair. a number of washington, d.c. museums have a new ban. >> they say when you visit there, leave your selfie stick at home. okay, we're telling people not to bring their selfie sticks. it's a stick like this one on the urban outfitters website. people use it to, you know, take pictures of themselves.
