declared and our weather team has it covered. let's start with dylan dreyer in boston. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the snow has returned in boston. but yesterday we hit 40 degrees for the first time in 44 days. but in other parts of the country, it was anything but springlike. in texas where they got just under four inches of snow. it stretched all the way up into new england. and we do have states of emergency in alabama, mississippi, also up into west virginia and new jersey where the snow is very heavy. it went from rain to ice to snow. that's what's making the roads extremely dangerous. it's going to slowly spread east today making a mess of washington, d.c. area where public offices are closed today. and office is closed today because of the snow they are expecting. so it is certainly hopefully the last final blow. because next week it looks like we are going to get into a pattern change and start to see some warmer temperatures. but al especially back through

the snow gets heavy in washington new york city. snow falling one to three inches per hour. likely four to seven inches. it continues into the afternoon hours with winter storm warnings. look at the snowfall amounts. generally about anywhere from 3 to 6 inches. but from long island into new jersey about 6 to 9 inches. and this is going to be a big problem later this morning into the afternoon hours. up to 1/2 inch of ice down through the southeast. that's where we can see power lines going down. roads is mess. 2500 flights have been canceled already. those numbers will go up. but as dylan mentioned, we do see a light at the end of the tunnel. good news, it's not a train. >> coming in the wrong direction. >> al thank you. meantime the u.s. ambassador to south korea recovering from a vicious attack. chilling photos show mark lippert bleeding from his head and wrist just moments after he was slashed by a knife wielding man. nbc's keir simmons has the latest on this. keir good morning to you. >> reporter: matt good morning.

ambassador lippert underwent two and a half hours of surgery this morning. has 80 stitches. doctors say he will spend at least three days hospitalized. he was extraordinarily calm in the moments after the attack. moments captured on video and these are shocking pictures of what happened to such a senior american diplomat. panic. >> i'm bleeding here. >> reporter: just minutes after suffering a four-inch slash to his face. >> i need an ambulance fast. get me to the hospital. >> reporter: ambassador lippert, a second cut to his arm, is bundled into a car. moments earlier the ambassador who served with the navy s.e.a.l.s calmly walks from the room where his alleged assailant was wrestled to the ground. [ screaming ] mark lippert's place setting still splattered with blood. later the ambassador was helped from an ambulance bandaged and

wearing hospital clothes. i'm okay he said. doctors say he is suffering some paralysis of the face and arm, but this morning he tweeted, doing well and in great spirits. robyn his wife and his song and dog and i deeply moved by the support. we will be back asap. the suspect in his 50s taken away loudly protesting about u.s./south korean military exercises. south korea said it was shocked by an attack on a major allied country. north korean television called it a punishment deserved to the warmonger u.s. while secretary kerry described it as a senseless attack. >> he's doing as good as could be expected. and his spirit is strong. >> reporter: and overnight, the president phoned the ambassador offering his prayers. and lippert is close to the president. he's worked with him for many

years. should he have had more security? there was no metal detector at the door. and this alleged assailant got in despite previously reportedly attacking the japanese ambassador with a piece of concrete. >> yeah they're going to have to review those procedures and the injuries could have been a lot worse. >> absolutely. >> keir, thank you. big story in politics this morning. hillary clinton responding for the first time to this growing controversy over her use of a personal e-mail account as secretary of state. in a tweet late last night, she says she asked the state department to release her e-mails. she wants them to do that as soon as possible. andrea mitchell has more on all of it. andrea good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. two days a the controversy over her use of private e-mail first erupted, hillary clinton has given her first response on twitter as you say. but that still may not ensure some democrats about the way she handled this issue.

after clinton foundation owners hillary clinton tweeted at 11:35 p.m. i want the public to see my e-mail. i asked state to release them. they said they will review them for release as soon as possible. she did not address why she used a private e-mail system exclusively while secretary of state or registered it to her home. raising questions about whether her e-mails were properly archived. >> it's important to ensure that when official business is conducted on personal e-mail that those records are properly maintained and preserved. >> reporter: clinton aides say she turned over 55,000 panls last year to the state department but have not said whether she held anything back. and now the republican-led house committee investigating benghazi has subpoenaed all of clinton's relevant e-mails. >> i can't do what the house asked me to do which is write the final definitive report on

benghazi if i don't have all of her e-mails. >> reporter: wrote the committee that contrary to report clinton used only one personal e-mail address as secretary of state. then switched to a new address after leaving office. but why would she go to such lengths to avoid using government e-mail? one possible clue, this overheard conversation from 2001. >> reporter: adding to the mystery around the home server it was registered under an eric hotha many rks, the name of a former clinton aide. >> a personal e-mail server even if it's set up very well is going to be more vulnerable to hacking than a government server. >> reporter: they will review e-mails that clinton provided them to decide what to release but it will take some time. clinton defenders point out that jeb bush also used a private e-mail system when he was

private e-mails over to the government and not all of them? that question she doesn't address in her tweet last night, gonna have to address that. >> going to take more than a tweet then? >> going to take more than a tweet. she is going to have to talk. >> mark halperin, thanks so much. >> thank you. >> send it to matt. another day of dramatic testimony expected today at the trial of boston marathon bombing suspect, dzhokar tsarnaev, this after an opening day that featured the surprise admission from the defense, some graphic images of the attack and emotional testimony. nbc national correspondent, peter alexander, is in boston. peter, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. punctuating that first day of what you describe was right as emotional testimony, some powerful accounts for the first time from boston bombing survivors facing the man that even the defense admits tried to kill them. when the bombs exploded two years ago, rebecca gregory, who lost a leg, remembers hearing her 5-year-old son repeatedly calling "mommy. mommy." on wednesday, she testified she was thinking, "god, if this is

it, take me, but let me know noah is okay." overnight, gregory wrote about her court appearance on facebook, posting in an open letter to her alleged attacker, hanks, "today, i looked at you right in the face and realized i wasn't afraid anymore. and today, i realized that sitting across from you was somehow the crazy kind of step forward that i needed all along." badly wounded college student sydney corkran also testified, saying, "i remember feeling i'm just going to sleep. it felt almost peaceful. i was fading fast." the long-awaited trial opened wednesday with tsarnaev's defense lawyer making a stunning admission, it was him. looking to spare tsarnaev's life, the defense looked to shift the blame to tamerlan, saying tamerlan who self-radicalized, but prosecutors disagree, adding that dzhokar pretended to be a spectator, had murder in his heart, adding he believed he was in a holy war against americans. prosecutors say dzhokar tsarnaev began reading terrorist writings

as early as 2011, two years before the bombing and they say just 20 minutes after the marathon attack, he went to a whole goods grocery store, where surveillance video showed him calmly buying milk. underscoring the devastation of the attack, prosecutors also showed the jury dramatic new video of the explosion, shattering the windows of a nearby sporting goods store. employees inside scrambling to help those badly injured. one of the most compelling moments of yesterday's testimony was from the manager of that sporting goods store, marathon sports on boylston street, who described choking back tears the moment that that explosion took place. he said, "the thing that haunts me the most are the agonizing decisions, who do you help first? who needs it more?" matt, more testimony expected today. >> peter alexander in boston this morning. peter, thank you very much. turn to natalie now. she is following this report on ferguson, missouri's, police department it is damning.

clinton's under fire for using a personal e-mail account exclusively for official government business. and mark lippert, the u.s. ambassador to south korea says he is doing well and in great spirits as he recovers from surgery following a frightening attack. lippert was attending a breakfast meeting in seoul when he was slashed in the face and arm by a knife-wielding man. that man is in custody. >> frightening. coming up, a woman who can't wait for winter to end. for more than a month, she has been stranded on an ice and snow-covered island off the coast of maine. why she's there and what her friends just did to make sure she had supplies. gonna begin this half hour with the disturbing case of hazing under investigation at syracuse university. and nbc's stephanie gosk is on that story this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the fallout has been swift in this case. that fraternity suspended, two of its members arrested after an incident that may cost one student four of his fingers. it is the scary incident that

has syracuse students talking. >> a really bad image on this fraternities and sororities and greek life in general. >> actually quite ridiculous that someone has to go through all of that in order to be just a part of something. >> reporter: shortly after midnight on monday, three pledges from the new alpha fi fraternity were taking part in what's being called forced exercise in a park near campus. the exercises, which lasted about a half hour, included pushups and took place in 19-degree temperatures in an area with snow on the ground, according to local police. the pledges were not wearing gloves. one of them went to a nearby hospital complaining of pain in his hands. according to police, he was diagnosed with severe frostbite and is in danger of losing his ring and pinky fingers on both hands. syracuse police arrested 19-year-old ty kim and 21-year-old jeffrey yam, both nu alpha fi members on charges of first-degree hazing. they were released on appearance tickets for a court date in two weeks. authorities say the two uninjured pledges are not cooperating with their investigation.

syracuse university released a statement saying it has, "zero tolerance for any form of hazing and takes this matter extremely seriously." the university says the two students who were arrested will also be subject to the school's student code of conduct. we should mention those students could not be reached for comment. >> all right, stephanie, thank you. >> not a fraternity person, but i don't understand wanting to be part of a club where they would make you so miserable just to join the club. i really don't. >> at what point do you say uncle? >> yeah. yeah. right? >> thank you, stephanie. a check of the weather from mr. roker. big changes coming, temperature-wise, one more arctic blast and then i think we are out of the woods as far as really cold air. right now, it's 10 in chicago, feels like 1 below, minus 6 in minneapolis, charlotte, 64, atlanta, 64, but then the front drops through and watch what happens during the day today, atlanta, your temperature steady drop into the upper 30s, chicago, you warm up to 16.

>> i really didn't need anything but there were things that i wanted. >> reporter: so her friends devised a plan an air drop and they found a pilot who just loved the idea. >> and he was all excited about it. he says oh boy an air drop. this will be great. >> reporter: the day of the drop it was 12 degrees below zero. >> i put on my snow shoes, bundled up because it was the coldest morning i ever had out here in my whole life. >> reporter: from above, you can see diane and from the open window of the plane, out went two boxes. the first box bounced off a roof but the second landed dead on. >> it was coffee, half and half a candy par, can of dog food oranges. i had never really thought about it but i really like knowing that somebody could bring me things if i really needed them. >> reporter: ever the lobster scientist, diane has just kept on working. >> and even this winter when it's about so cold and there's ice, there's still things i've been able to learn because i'm

resting during the duration of the chemotherapy, not touched by the toxic chemotherapy drugs and when the chemo is stopped, the drug has stopped, fertility is, therefore, preserved. >> what the studies show with fertility rates and pregnancy? >> the main outcome measure was this thing called ovarian failure, essentially an early menopause and they found that the treatment group, the whip who got zoladex, 8% of them were rendered infertile, as opposed to 22% in the control group. a flip side number to that is the number of successful pregnancies was 21% in the treatment group as opposed to 11% in the control group. both of those findings were statistically significant. this is wonderful for the women out there, premenopausal women candidates for getting this medicine, patients who are what we call hormone receptor negative, may have a chance to preserve fertility in a way not as invasive or expensive as traditional methods. >> great news. thanks, dr. aczar.

remarkable story, hi kate. >> good morning. matt look at possible i now, never know what he has been through, a wonderful 13-year-old boy, ready to go back to school when he is well enough but getting here took years. >> bobby was a happy and healthy child. he was in the gifted program at school. and he played many sports. >> reporter: but at 9 years old, bobby started having stomach pain that grew worse and worse. >> a would eat, woe get these what is sive pains, double over and start crying. >> reporter: carrie and tom started eliminating foods from his diet to see if he would feel better. >> eventually ended up only eating blue berries and chicken, it was pretty drastic. >> rep bobby needed a feeding tube and that wasn't all. he had headaches, tremors. he was unable to control his body temperature. >> reporter: doctors figured out bobby had a system affecting systems in his body that should

be automatic, temperature regulation blood pressure digestion. >> really horrendous pain and i couldn't hold my head up more than ten minutes at a time. >> bobby's health deteriorated he was in a wheelchair and losing his vision. >> we bent from doctor to doctor trying to find answers. >> everyone really helped -- helped out. it took a toll on everybody. >> reporter: then another diagnosis, doctors said bobby had a disorder affecting the strength of his ligaments but even that didn't seem to explain all of his problems. from her home in florida, carrie started doing her own research online. >> and i talked to all different moms that had children with similar problems and learned from them and i started putting the pieces of the puzzle together. >> the whole time we are looking at some black pain never imagining that the problem could be another part of his body his brain. >> reporter: the internet led carrie to dr. harold with cohen children's medical center, hundreds of miles away in new

york. she sent him scans of her son's skull and spine. so when you see bobby's scans, do you know immediately what's going on? >> yes. we see that the brain is distorted. i knew that he could be helped by surgery. i knew that the chronic pain that he was in could be helped that we could change his life. >> reporter: bobby's ligament condition was affecting his brain. >> the ligaments holding the head on to the spine are too loose. that allowed the bone to be pushed backward into the brain and caused the pain and some of the neurologic problems he was having. >> reporter: in december bobby went to new york for a surgery the doctor invented. during the six-hour procedure, he realigned bobby's skull with his spine and then screwed it in place. >> when you look at the boss on you see that there is noing an lation. there's no distortion of the brain. >> the pipe is looks straight. >> completely straight. >> reporter: they expected bobby's pain to go away but even the doctor didn't expect what

happened next his stomach trouble, light headedness all those things controlled by the autonomic nervous system they got better too. >> all of a sudden he just started getting better and walking around. >> it felt up real. i couldn't believe it. >> to me it's a miracle. it really is a miracle. >> doctors can't say for certain why his gastrointestinal and other nervous systems got better but may be because the spine was impacting his brain stem which, of course controls all those bucss. the doctor wants to be clear they need more research on this but i think the thing that's so compelling about this story, guys is that his mother did all this research and would not take no for an answer until she found someone and that's ultimately what led to his recovery. just like yesterday, takes one trained eye to look at something and say, wait a minute no. >> has to do with your ligaments and your brain. who would have known? >> a mom would couldn't give up.

the rust-colored one. what i by merely use is called dutched cocoa, it was made by a guy who was dutch. they take the acid out, makes it rounder, smoother and obviously makes it darker. you see all these baked goods, dark and rich and have the wonderful round cocoa flavor. >> going to show three recipes, you can do all of these grew then free or vegan. >> or healthier. or all the we will bells and whistles, the but the the flower. >> what is the big winewski? >> chocolatey fudgy, fab you louse cook yescookie. you will whisk together the flour, put in the cocoa, whisk it 30 seconds. it distrouble is he putting the levining the baking powder and i'm going to whisk these eggs until they are ribbon stage and into the eggs i'm adding espresso powder and the vanilla. espresso powder doesn't add a chocolate flavor i'm going to make it do something else. it makes the cocoa more cocoay.

make it is more chocolatey. you are going to put the flour into the chocolate and use your muscle and just mix it together. you don't have to be gentle. use a spoon. don't be gentle. use your muscle it gets really thick, right? >> gets really all over you, too. oh my goodness. this is not good. i'm a professional. there you go. beautiful. >> let's pretend i did that better. that goes into there. >> then we add the eggs and slowly bold them in in batches. if you add it in all at once it is hard to incorporate. if you add it like a third at a time it incorporates very easily. a disaster here. >> disaster. i really think you should watch, not participate. go eat. >> move on before you insult me more. ends up looking like this. >> if i do it yes. so what we do we take a hot and a wet scooper and you keep it hot and wet so that -- sounds so dirty, so that you easily get it out of the scooper.

so you just scoop it onto the pan and then what i also do is i get my hands a little moist, everybody's favorite word and i smush it down so that ben it bakes, they don't spread easily you got to smush it. >> what it looks like when it is done? >> yeah. . healthy here, a zucchini chocolate proceed. >> yes. >> really healthy or just a joke? >> it is really healthy if you add extra sugar not going to be healthy. it is really healthy. the cocoa is so healthy. i use black cocoa, obvious reasons, black, so dark so luscious. i made it into cupcakes, gluten free, one of tho cakes adaptable, make it vegan, healthier and then for parties, kids will never know there's zucchini in it >> what kind of icing is that? >> cream cheese icing. >> so not healthy. pretend we did that i want to show the whoopee pies okay? >> so great. obviously, chocolatey

side wasn't working. by the time i got to him, i couldn't even keep my balance. it was very dramatic. >> is that typical? >> it is. loss of sensation like that. numbness in a big part of the body. loss of balance. loss of movement. scary stuff. big areas. kind of a classic way it can show itself. >> and some people go into remission for very very long periods of time. and other people seem to battle it on a daily basis, gaining in symptoms as well. >> it's true. >> every case is individual which is kind of a blessing and a curse. you don't know what's going to happen. i can certainly say that it forces you to really think in the present. so right now today, i'm doing great. >> you don't care if there's a snowstorm. >> i love the snow. but, you know the fact is it becomes a bit of a crap shoot. i could say to somebody whether it's somebody when i was single on a date or an employer or whatever i'm doing great now, i

could be in a wheelchair in two months i could be fine for the rest of my life. i find that throwing it out there and being totally honest makes a big difference. >> she's so young and positive but so young. is this the age at which people get diagnosed. >> classically, it is. 20s, 30s and 40s are the main anyone ages. that's the classic time. >> why so many women as opposed to men? >> great question. we think it's even more common in women now than it might have been a few decades ago. so it's something we're really thinking about. >> i know you have something you want to say. >> i would say that as the dwr says there are now 12 disease modifying therapies. there were zero 20 years ago. now, there's a more serious form of the illness which i could slide into this progressive form of ms. there are currently no treatments. that has been a really big
