good morning. coming up on "early today," breaking developments overnight in harrison ford's crash landing, including a message from his son. then to another crash landing. this one with 132 people on board. >> he's leaking fuel on the left side of his aircraft heavily. >> you said leaking fuel? >> affirm. his wing is ruptured. >> the plane stopped just inches short of the freezing bay. dramatic moments in the courtroom at the boston bombing trial. it is friday march 6th. "early today" starts right now. good morning. they say he had no other choice. a statement from harrison ford's pr team confirms the actor's world war ii vintage training plane had engine trouble shortly

after taking off, forcing him to make an emergency landing on a golf course. >> 53178 engine failure. >> engine trouble. that was ford's advice as amateur video shows the plane moments before the crash. sources tell nbc news this morning ford is okay and will make a full recovery but he needed surgery for multiple injuries including what sources describe as a nasty gash to his head and a broken arm. but his son ben tweeted last night at the hospital dad is okay battered but okay. he is every bit the man you would think he is. he is an incredibly strong man. witnesses later described what they saw. >> we looked up a really cool-looking plane. at that exact moment the engine sputtered. >> you could hear the engine start to sputter. then i was watching to see what he was going to, do kept flying toward the ocean, then made a left turn. i thought he was coming back toward the airport. he went below the tree line then you couldn't see him.

a couple of seconds layer a crash, like crunching metal. >> that sound perhaps came when the plane clipped the top of a tree before hitting the ground. a doctor who just happened to be golfing reacted quickly, pulling ford away from the plane, fearing it was leaking fuel. >> -- i think anyone and i think to the credit of everyone there, everyone kind of worked as a team. but i think you gravitate toward injury. there's someone in there, someone who's in distress there, you want to do your best to help them. >> people across the country are used to seeing ford in the cockpit on the big screen from indiana jones to "air force one" to han solo in "star wars." two of his costars tweeted their support. glad to hear harrison is doing well. get well soon may all his future flights be green screened. peter mayhue from critical to severe to moderate to fair in

the span of an hour is harrisoned for han solo or wolverine? never tell me the odds. he takes ever reflight he makes seriously and i would trust him with my own family as his passengers today and in the future. back in 2000 harrison ford appeared on "inside the actors studio" after he walked away from a helicopter crash. it's what he said about flying that caught our attention. >> i fell in love with the skills and with the responsibilities. >> that's the main thing, the responsibility. >> yeah. you, you know -- all this stuff we pretend to do in movies you really are out there, responsible. >> p.i.c. >> pilot in command. another plane crash at new york's laguardia airport. delta flight 1086 slid off the runway, tried to land in the middle of a snow storm. it came within feet of the icy waters of the surrounding flushing bay.

132 people were on board. crew members and firefighters helped passengers evacuate. ground crews were the first to see the plane was in trouble and radioed the tower. >> tower, you copy? car 100, runway 13 is closed. >> car 100, runway 13 is closed? >> affirmative, 13 is closed. tower action you have an aircraft off the runway. >> car 100, say again? >> please advise crash rescue laguardia airport is closed at this point in time. >> the plane veered to the left stopped inches away from that freezing bay. the ntsb is investigating. two days into the boston marathon bombing trial and already we've heard searing testimony from survivors. so far the defense has flatly admitted that joe tsarnaev is guilty. at the same time the prosecutor is giving victims the chance to recount the horror and chaos that took place the day of the bombing. peter alexander was in court and has the latest. >> reporter: on that gorgeous

spring day nearly two years ago pure terror. in that instant, jeff bowman lost both legs. he remembered thinking this is how it's going to end. >> i had a great life. >> reporter: testifying in court, bowman recalled locking eyes with one of the bombers moments before the explosion. he wasn't watching the race. i thought it was weird. bowman later described tamerlan tsarnaev from his hospital bed, a major break. prosecutors showed jurors surveillance video of the second bombing they say shows tsarnaev placing the bomb and walking away. 8-year-old martin richard was killed. his father bill richard described that nightmare. i knew he wasn't going to make it. it was at that time i saw my son basically for the last time." mr. richard lost some hearing that day but he said i can still hear the beautiful voices of my family. while dzho tsarnaev seems deedee actived his trial is drawing emotion.

>> i looked at you in the face and realized i wasn't afraid anymore. so now while you're sitting in solitary confinement awaiting the verdict on your life, i will be actually enjoying everything this beautiful world has to offer. >> reporter: she says she's closer than ever to her son noah who survived with minor injuries. >> it is painful because at that moment i was completely helpless as a mother. i could do nothing for my son. >> you all live in houston but he's boston strong. >> yes in every sense of the word boston strong. >> reporter: peter alexander, nbc news boston. in illinois a train loaded with crude oil derailed setting off a spectacular fire. it happened near galena yesterday. the train had 103 cars full of oil when it left the tracks. it was so dangerous in fact that at one point the fire crews had to pull back. nobody was hurt. but there is concern that some oil might end up in the mississippi river. so far no word on what caused that derailment.

now to winter's latest brutal blast. snow-covered kentucky this hundreds of drivers stranded for more than 15 hours on a highway forcing some to get creative for food and water. >> there had been no assistance with food or water. i have been melting ice and snow to drink. >> the national guard was finally called in. they rescued more than 200 motorists. in maryland a storm caused a trailer hauling cattle to overturn. the truck hit a car, causing it to slip. the driver was fine but some of the cattle died. on capitol hill families went sledding despite a ban. yes, the no-sled ban has been in effect since 1876. this past week d.c. congressman eleanor holmes norton asked capitol police to lift it for a few days. but they refused, making all of this fun illegal. so look at these cute little scofflaws. congress' approval rating

dropped from 5% to 2%. >> exactly. >> all the snow might be over but the cold seems to be here to stay? >> the cold is one or two days in the east. the west is going to spread their warmth across the nation. starting this weekend. this was an overachieving snow storm. what a way to end an amazing stretch east of the rockies. up to 2 feet in kentucky. lexington had their biggest two-day snowfall ever 17 inches of snow. new york city had about 7 inches. the nation's capital had around 5 inches of snow very impressive. as far as other things pittsburgh, pennsylvania, this morning is down to negative 3. that is the coldest temperature they have ever had in march. so that's going to change. we're going to warm things up in the east. all of the warmth is out west today. we're watching temperatures about 5 to 10 degrees above average. i don't even remember what average is like. i'm sure you don't either. temperatures had been above average for so long now. 76 in san jose. 71 in medford. even as we go through saturday it's going to be more of the same. some of this warmth is going to be in spreading across the

probably won't be going away any time soon. the revelation she was exclusively using private e-mail while serving in such a high-profile government job is raising serious political and legal questions. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington. a lot of focus has been on the transparency issue here. but there's really a security concern. >> reporter: exactly. not so much the fact that she used a private e-mail address, but what happened to those e-mails, where they were stored in her own home how secure was that. these are the things that the inspector general's being asked to investigate. the state department is scouring 55,000 pages of e-mails hillary clinton turned over last year taking out anything top secret. >> we'll conclude it as soon as we can and get those released publicly. >> reporter: but since clinton kept her e-mail on a personal server at home critics wonder are there more? >> how are we going to know that? how are we going to have verification of that? >> reporter: democrats are

defending hillary clinton's use of personal e-mail calling this a republican witch hunt. but some are concerned. >> some democrats, including many who are big, big supporters of her, are worried that there might be something else. >> reporter: lawmakers investigating the deadly benghazi attack only got 300 clinton e-mails. they want the rest. the state department says that could take months. now, besides her tweet, we have not seen or heard from hillary clinton on this since the scandal broke. some of our fellow democrats are worried saying if she'd had a campaign machine in place, had her team in place, she probably would have responded sooner. >> all right, thank you. well stories making news this morning. in italy a helicopter had to rescue skiers suspended in midair in their cable cars. a tree landed a cable after being blown over by high winds. local media say 184 people in total had to be rescued and that there were no injuries. in los angeles, a verdict

watch in the "blurred lines" trial. the jury began deliberations thursday and will continue today. pharell williams and robin thicke are being sued. marvin gaye's children claim they stole elements from his hit "got to give it up" for "blurred lines" which made more than $16 million in profits. gaye's family lawyer is asking for $25 million in damages. pope francis' popularity is heavenly. according to a new pew research poll, 95% of catholic americans give him high marks. when it comes to all faiths 70% view him favorably. even two-thirds of atheists or agnostics seem to like pope francis. these numbers are the highest level since his papacy began in 2013. a big change for the greatest show on earth. ringling brothers who first introduced elephants to the big top in 1882 is ending its elephant acts by 2018. this is a big win for animal

w. bush, and hundreds of lawmakers are expected to gather in selma, alabama, this weekend to commemorate a big turning point in the civil rights movement. tomorrow march 7th will mark the 50th anniversary of what's known as bloody sunday. on that day, hundreds of demonstrators attempted to march 50 miles from selma to the alabama state capitol in montgomery to demand the right to vote for black americans. when the marchers reached the edmund pettus bridge state and law enforcement officials attacked them on horseback, with billy clubs and tear gas. over a dozen were hurt including future congressman john lewis. that and later demonstrations helped lead to the passage of the voting rights act of 1965. happy birthday to nba grate shaquille o'neal 43 today. deal mary wilson of the supremes is 71. i'm milissa rehberger. thanks for watching "early
