gathering information. >> we can talk to her right now. steph, go ahead. >> hey, good morning, scott and laura, and there are no suspects in the custody for the shooting, be but it is a top priority because it appears that someone is targeting law enforcement, and the stretch of 101 is closed down for some time, because they are waiting for police to complete investigating looking for evidence. they say that someone started to shoot at a police car at 11:30 near tully road. again, no one was hurt, but you can see in the video that the police shut down all of the lanes of 101 to make way for officers to use the flashlights to search all of the lanes across the look for evidence. it is likely they were looking for the casings with shots headed in the other direction, southbound, and the search went over an hour before police cleared the scene.

it took police longer before they reopened 101. the closure caused some backup, but it was well ahead of the morning commute. it is early in the investigation, but police say that again, the bullets could have come from a vehicle going southbound, and no shooter or shooters in custody yet. stephanie tran. we have a developing story in jerusalem. one man in custody for what authorities are calling a terror attack. nbc news is told that a motorist slammed into a crowd of people at a east jrue lem transit stop. the young man then got out of the car and threaten beemd a knife. officers shot him, and he is in the hospital this morning. four bystanders were hurt, but none of them seriously. >> and hayward police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run.

police struck and hit an injured man along wynton avenue. the unidentified man died from the injuries yesterday. anyone who witnessed what happened are asked to contact the police. and now, the bay area may have a long unsolved gypsy hill murders. six women were brutally murdered on the e peninsula, but recent dna evidence linked rodney h howblower to six of the vix tims. he was extradited to a oregon prison, and today, attorneys will be assigning doctors to determine if he is come e peten stand trial. >> and the medical examiner is saying that on saturday, 14-year-old devon ellis was walking with friends in east oakland when he was shot.

he was a star student, and football player, and a spokesman from the school said that nobody can understand why he was targeted. there is a 20,000 dlrd$20,000 f information in the case. harrison ford crash landed his world war ii airplane on a golf course. this crash could have been much worse. >> yes, he has been flying for a while, and apparently the experience paid off. this morning the faa and the ntsb is investigating what went wrong as harrison, himself, called air traffic control, and even though the voice is calm, you can see that things are real as he is crashing near a suburbian neighborhood at a golf course. he knew immediately something was wrong with his vintage world

war ii airplane. one golfer says he was horrified to watch him try to go back, only to crash three holes where from he was. >> it sounded like blup, plup, blup, and it is clear that whoever was flying that airplane was going the crash. >> and harrison ford was lucky, because the first responders were a bunch of doctors out playing golf. lucky for him. he has broken bones, and had sur surgery, but he is expected to the recover. his son e tweeted that he is battered, but okay. he is an incredibly strong man, and every bit the man you thought that he was. this is not his first incident. when he was getting his pilot's l licenser he and an instructor walked away from a e helicopter crash. and a year from that he rescued a boy scout, and a year from that he rescued a mountain

climber. >> he just continues to be fortunate. and now, wreckage is being retrieved after a plane slid off of the runway in laguardia. this is the picture of the cranes taking the body of the plane off of the embankment. it went off of the runway and went into the chain-link fence. we have a shot of the 127 people on board as several passengers were using the emergency exit to get out. the slides did not deploy, so they had to sit down and scoot out, but nobody was seriously hurt. this morning, the jobs numbers for the month of february release d in the last 0 minutes or so, 295,000 jobs were added to the american economy in the month of february. the unemployment rate dropped to

5.5%. >> the woman at the center of the gender discrimination suit was cut short because one of the jurors had a family emergency. she is accusing kleiner perkins of not promoting her because she was a woman, and it is a charge that they have denied. during the testimony yesterday, an independent investigator hired by the firm says that there were inappropriate comments made on a plane trip. one of the investors said that he was going to hire marissa mayer, because she was quote, re really hot. >> and now a look outside as the sun begins to come up, and it is going to be a beautiful day. >> and leading into the beautiful week as well. we will check the forecast as we go the meteorologist kristen.

>> speaking of something a that is unusual this morning, we have a really interesting pattern shaping up, because of the downsloping winds, we are a degree warmer and a degree cooler in san jose. but you won't notice that here, but you will in half moon bay. looking at the the beautiful bay bridge this morning, and san francisco bay looking nice. choppy out there as the winds are increasing, and yeah, savor the picture, and feast your eyes on the picture as long as you can, because they are going to be turning the lights out for a year very soon, within the hour. throughout the morning the temperatures are silly out

there. as we head throughout the afternoon, rapid warming. that is the record story of the day with the 70s headed our way. and then the last time on a friday, the sunsetting at 6:09. through the next few days, temperatures will get warmer, and in the try-valley, upper 70s and low 80s into the tri-valley, and then the pattern changes entire entirely. we have rain on the way for three to four days next week. we will talk more about this coming up, and then i promise the weekend events all in the report. right now, check the drive, and friday, people want to get to work smoothly. one guy who may help you out, mike inouye. >> yes, it is some wanting to get out of work. going to the commute to the 101, we have the first burst of the shot, and north of here, there is another slowdown, and here is

the typical san jose pattern, and the exception to the of the 101 to central there, and there is a crash blocking the slowin slowing, and couple of cars blocking, but maybe some minor injuries. we will track that. we will see p there is still a slowing block for any significant period of time. in the tri valley, nothing dramatic. that it is for anything un unexpected around the bay. and as you look at the nevada and on the right side of the screen, you will see the bay bridge and the approach off of highway 4 with no problems, and the toll plaza picture, you can see it, and this is my version of the bay bridge light. these are going to be be continue forever. >> and you don't have to pay for them. >> not just to look at them, but if you are in them. >> that is true. thank you. >> and white on one side and red on the other. time is 6:10 and a major blow

stop on the 280 connector. and harrison ford may be released from the hospital as soon as today. he has been in the hospital since he crash landed the plane on a southern california golf course yesterday. he reported engine problems shortly after take off. and the unemployment rate fell from 5.6% to 5.5%, and added new jobs. after two years of dazzling the skyline, and you can see the lights there in the dawn, and they are going to be going dark any moment here on the bay bridge. >> and at the em bar ka dare row th -- enbarrcodera, and what is going on out there? >> well, a couple of hundred people out here, and a string quartet playing, and before the sun fully comes up to get one

last glims of the bay bridge lights. i don't know if you see it, but they are slowly disappearing before the sun comes up, and leo villareal, and you got these up here two years ago, and what does it feel like when all of these people are coming out when they could be home in their beds? >> well, i am humbled with gratitude, and excited to have a piece like this for two years, and unique and the way it is embraced by the public is remarkable. >> reporter: surprised? >> well, i nknow that i love th piece and believed in it, but to see the response, yes, it is overwhelming and amazing. >> reporter: and today, it is going to be shutdown, because caltrans has to do maintenance on the bridge, but the plan is to bring it back for the super bowl and make it semi permanent? >> well, it is a piece of intra structure that hundreds of thousands of people use

everyday, and that is always part of the deal, and so we are thrilled to bring it back in about 11 months. >> reporter: you had to get up private fund, and you had got up $4 million. and was it a struggle? >> well, the first time we had to get up to $8 million, and those were brave patrons. it is not easy, but we have patrons who are willing to do something beautiful for the city. >> and. >> reporter: when it comes back, it is going to be the dramatically different? >> no, it is going to be the same lights that everybody loves. a little tweaking, and adjusting, but people will expect the same. >> and a lot of people aretake ing the pictures trying to get the last look, and again in time for super bowl 50. >> i love the turn out there. >> amazing. >> and the spirit. >> and the spring quartets. and we will have a party for anything. thank you, bob. all right.

6:16 right now, and time to check the microclimate forecast. across the way, you will find the beautiful golden gate bridge, iconic in itself this morning, and the sun is rise ing in the bay area, and making for a beautiful morning, christina >> yes. we will see a lovely weekend, and plans for the outdoors, and lovely celebration, and you will be happy to know that the weather will accommodate that, and basically anything that you want to do and head up to tahoe, and we have quite a bit of snowfall there in the high peak, and that is what came through and more on the way as we get into next week. we are in the 40s and on the way to upper 60s at lunchtime, and you will see it vividly on the outer sunset district, and the temperatures are going to be rising into the upper 70s and the sun is coming up, and rapid warming as we get into the afternoon hours, and high pressure is the reason why of

the dominant feature. and this is what happens when you have a downsloping hills, it is going to the push away the marine layer, and that influence is negated, and the downsloping winds that warm up along the way, and this is the result along the beaches. 74 today, and pacifica, and half moon bay as well. and we will fly you down to the warmest beach area in our city, santa cruz. if if you can get out warmer in monterrey, the temperatures will be 77 later today. all right. we promised you weekend events, and a couple of things happened, big events in san francisco. a big parade for the chinese new year, and this is going to be celebrated tomorrow. they will have floats and acrobatics, and temperatures warm to start, and by the end of the parade, the temperatures drop quickly as the sun goes down because of the dry warm air mass and the sun goes down, and we will lose the heating, and

the temperature is rising rapidly. and this is the big white elephant rummage sale, and it is going to benefit the oakland museum, and if if you get out there, you might find that one man's trash is another man's treasure. temperatures are comfortable all weekend long, and monday and tuesday, things will change with the temps dropping a touch. then wednesday, the rain moves in. we look at the future cast, and stop the clock at 8:00 a.m., and the showers moving through the bay area continuing until 6:00 p.m. wednesday. then a heavier round as we go into thursday, and then clearing out by friday of next week. the temperatures are not bad, but don't forget, mike, another morning that the sunrise slowdown. >> it is going to shift because of the time change, and folks will get it later in the comm e commute. and also, over here, we will see the sunrise, and no slowing north 101 to 680, and this is

clearing up quite a bit. looking at the patterns to the south, and unusual because of the crash, and san jose to the 101 and one lane is blocked. is it -- it is clearing up where the camera s and then it is slowing down at the expressway. there could be some minor injuries near the crash. that is the only slowdown from the silicon valley through san jose. and in hayward, a lighter volume as we will see for a friday, and almost always see on friday. there is the dublin camera there live, and you can see the traffic coming toward me westbound, and that is nothing dramatic, but steady flow through the altamont. and highway 4 through pittsburgh and bay point, and the upper and the lower east shore and the north bay, no problems there, and the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights are on, and

the backup at the toll plaza, but no problems getting into the cit city. >> thank you, mike. we are a month away from the regular season, but already a blow for the favorite. >> hunter pence is out for six to eight weeks. he was bean bade pitch in spring training game yesterday, and that pitch fractured a bone in the forearm. he going to be missing the first couple of weeks of the regular season. this is new territory for pence and the g-men, because he has not missed a game in two seasons, the longest streak in the majors. 6:21 and still ahead, a look at the historic medical proce procedure taking place right here. and the virtual reality, and looking at the top of a patient's brain like never befor before. >> and let's go outside, and to the sunrise, and back in a moment.

and we have been watching the iconic bay bridge this morning. the lights are ofiblly out. they are going to be out for about a year while they retro fit them to make them perfect and permanent. it is a great thing, but surely missed. it is 6:24 right now, and fascinating new tool using virtual reality to make difficult procedures less of a headache. it is called surgical theater.

it allows doctors the look deep inside of the brain before surgery to see the problem areas before they go in, and brain surgeons says it allows them to make a road map, and avoid sensitive areas. >> and one hour of sleep can make a difference in what teens eat. a majority of the teens slept an average of seven hours a night, and when they slept one hour more or less than usual they consumed more fats and carbohydrates, and they say that the amount of sleep does not matter as much as the change itself in the sleep pattern. >> one day down and another to go in a rare kidney transplant. >> and we told you about a complex kidney transplant chain under way at california pacific medical center in san francisco. six people are donating the good k kidneys to people in need. so far, doctors say, everything

goss is there with the latest. >> scott and laura, i'm right across the bay with the latest, and hours ago we saw that being taken away that is trying to get the air traffic back to normal. you can get a sense from where we are of how much water surrounds laguardia, and this is a notoriously difficult place to land. yesterday, there was wind and snow and fog. one of the things to look at however is just before the plane landed, there were two other plan planes that landed and the breaks were working fine. we spoke to a couple of passengers who were rattled, but calm yesterday and taken by surpri surprise. a lot of them realizing how close this came to being an incredibly deadly tragedy. back to you. >> thank you, stephanie. you can see stephanie's full report coming up at 7:00 on the "today" show. and one report that is going

to dredge up painful memories. the sandy hook report. it is by daniel milloy to talk about school safety and gun protection and this is a report that is following the shooting three years ago in newtown, connecticut with a 16-member panel. and police say that this man seen here in the wheelchair is the man who slashed the ambassador of the united states in seoul, korea, with a knife. he needed 80 stitches. he graduated from stanford in 1988. in the italian alps, 200 skiers were left stranded in the

cable cars when 280-mile-an-hour win winds caused a tree to the fall on the cable lines, and luckily, nobody was injured. yesterday, the father of an 8-year-old boy who died in the boston bombing blast took the stand. bill richard told the jurors when he saw his son's condition, he knew he would not make it. richards said that he was forced to leave his son to die while he rushed his daughter to the hospital. testimony resumes monday. >> 6:33. tomorrow marks the anniversary of the pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. the bloody sunday march from selma to montgomery, alabama. on that day, the police injured d dozens of people with clubs and president obama is planning to attend the area this weekend.

let us figure out to san jose and the live pictures this morning as we begin another wonderful weekend. we will get close to it. >> for us, you can say it, it is 6:33, and christina with a look at the microclimate forecast. >> is yes, very nice out there later on today. if you wanted to get outdoors, anything that you don't want to get wet, you want to bring it in over the course of the weekend, because we have rainp moving in as of early next week. yeah, you don't want to do that in the work week, so we want to keep you moving forward in time, and speaking of which, the time change occurs 2:00 a.m. sunday, and we will lose an hour of sleep. temperature temperatures this morning are comfortable out there, and not bad at all, and 55 degrees in half moon bay, and chilly at 44 here, and then way above average for the lunchtime averages. 60s across the board. not a lot of separation here.

and this is the trend whenever we see the offshore flow. here are the highs later on today. and 4 degrees in the south bay, and 73 on the peninsula today. the east oshore is looking good. if you want to hit tahoe, they are steadily making the snowfall, because it is cold enough overnight, and you have five feet of snow at the base of squaw and alpine meadows. the temperatures are going to be w wonderful up there. early snowfall next week. if you want to get to the beach, central cove, and hitting m monterrey, you will have it hitting the south, big sur, beautiful with the temperatures in the upper 70s. and us here, hard to beat areas here, and right around room temperature, and you won't need the heater or the a.c., and then the numbers are going to drop rapidly, and we will talk about it coming up in the next look.

>> yes, we are expecting a lighter volume of traffic. where the arrow is that is northbound 101 and hilliard. the car went off of the highway in the crash, and sounds like a spinout with the dirt and the ush bushes on the side. no injuries reported there, but sl slower drive and little build there. north 101 from the santa altamont expressway. it is going to 880 and approaching 680 coming up from the altamont expressway. and the silicon valley is moving the same as the south bay. and now, heading down through hayward, and there is a crash that is reported in the dublin interchange. there is a wide look at the approach to the bay bridge, and the north bay and no drama.

we will be looking at the bay bridge with the toll plaza and the metering lights on, and the traditional. and so there is southbound 101 through san rafael, but all of the usual suspects will be slowing down for a shorter period starting later. >> there you go with the friday morning commute. thank you, mike. >> yes, the dow losing 97 points, and we have the ton employment rate at 5.5%, and that means that easily the fed could move up the interest rate hikes, and that is what you are seeing here with the dow losing 100 points. >> 6:37, and straight ahead, a local agency failed to protect whistle-blowers, and now the feds are taking action.

so what we exposed in the bay area is now getting attention in washington, d.c. part of the feds protecting the whistle-blowers and now the answer seems to be no. vicki nguyen has more on the investigation. >> we have a report from last week when there was a caseworker who worked on whistle-blowers' cases, and those were reported by people who worked in airlines

and other companies. they investigated only 2.8% of the cases, and nationally, it is more dismal, 2.7%, and whitman says that the numbers should be closer to 30%. when he shared the story of the whistle ploeers, he got a call from the office of special couns counsel. he says that the agent i si is looking into the claims, and may are refer them to the office of inspector general, but osha says it is not aware of any investigation by the office of ospecial counsel. you can see the full investigation by going to our website, and clicking on the investigations tab. 6:41 on your friday morning and we have the update on the freeway shooting on one of the most heavily traveled sections

and now, 15 minutes of continuous news, weather and traffic on "today in the bay." >> and we have update on the investiga investigators releasing more news on the shooting on 101 in the south bay, and this is involving a chp officer. >> stephanie chaung with the

latest. >> no word on a suspect. officers shutdown this section of 101 to story road, and looking for evidence close to an hour, and two cph officers withr stopping a a car southbound when someone started shooting at them. someone shot the patrol cars, and then again officers were not hurt, and police had shut down the lanes to make room for nine officers across the look for evidence from the shooting. it is likely they were looking for something like bullet casing, and it is possible that they were heading in the other direction, and the search went on for an hour until 1:00 this morning, and it took the chp a little bit longer to open up this stretch of the 101. the closure sure at that time did cause the traffic to build

where it is hard to beat 75. we are still in the wintertime for the next couple off week, and the reason it is so warm at the local beaches as inland is because of the high pressure firmly in control. offshore flow is the story of the day. the wind goes from land to sea, and the marine influence is almost entirely negated. so if you wanted to head back down to san francisco this weekend, fantastic conditions for for you and the family. and it is work on pier 39 out there, and the temps in the mid-60s, and free rock climbing wall, and the free bike vallay, and -- bike valet, and it is hard to find anything free, so when that happens, we like to tell you about it. as we head into the weekend saturday and sunday, good across the board. and meanwhile in the upper 60s to low 70s in san francisco with the warmer day ahead on monday be before the rain moves in, and

looking at the future cast this morning. wednesday at 8:00 a.m., showers on the radar d, and that continues until 6:00 p.m. wednesday, and then another round of heavier rain as we head throughout the thursday through friday. and then e decent rainfall totals as well potentially up to a half inch to potentially a inch of rain. and we are doing okay, and at 110% of arng for this year in the south bay. so this is going to add to it, and then hopefully, we will have more systems looking good for that as we head into late march, and april. we will keep you updated. looking at the drive, mike, it is a friday and people don't want any problems going to work this morning, let's help them out. >> oh, so sorry to disappoint. in the south bay, we have well, about 110% capacity for 101. and northbound at 680, and look at how backed up here, and about a quarter of a mile south where

stephanie chaung took the live shot, and it is moving smoothly, but looking at the map here, we have a couple of issues, the traditional build 101 to 75, and a spinout on the shoulderr here, and it is not causing much of a e slowdown, but the other crash from where we just got the update, but the dramatic difference is the 101, it is just instead of the slow lane blocked, it is just the fast lane open, and only the left lane open, and we just got that update which is the backup of 880 to where we have the camera at 680 there. folks will try to take the 87 to get by it, but it will not work. take the expressway to get through that intersection. if you have that option in santa clara. we have a lighter build on pleasanton. so no real problems for the tri

valley or the east bay, and looking at the the interchange, and the freeway, and we are are starting to see the slowdowns, but north bay, no problems. the bay bridge, and show yog thaw the metering lights are on for a friday, and backup, but easier approach on the left. >> and on the peninsula, we will give you a look with the high volume of traffic there, with the folks headed into the sunrise, they will have a big change an hour later after the time change. >> thank you, mike. break in the brutal murder of an oakland murder. police say they have someone in custody. the boy was walking in oakland when he was shot. he is known as a star student and football player. a spokesman for the school said that no one can understand why he was targeted. there is a $25,000 the reward in the case for information. >> and now investigators say

that a man was hit by a car, and he was 50-year-olds and taken to the hospital. this this all happened in a parking lot of an industrial complex along wynton avenue. the man then died from his injuries yesterday. he has not been identified yet. anyone who witnessed the crash is being asked to contact the hayward police. >> dramatic video explains another fire in abandoned building in vallejo. this is the same building in the school district building in the past couple of days. it was boarded up and known as a homeless camp. this morning, san jose police are trying to find out who stabbed a teenager at the the south bay high school. it happened not far from independence high in san jose. the v the victim was a student at the high school, and he is in the hospital, but he will survive.
