i've seen him into an incredibly thorough preflight of his helicopter before our flight in helicopter, and very cautious and capable. >> we hear this is a world war ii era training plane. what does ma mean? is it more safe? less safe than we might expect? >> it is a vintage airplane designed only about 30 years after the wright brothers flew. so there are dynamics of it of course are from that era, and modern training airplane would handle differently in some environments. certainly it's a safe airplane, goes through the same faa inspections any modern airplane has to go through so they can be challenging to fly but harrison is a capable pilot and flown the plane a lot and does well have it. >> based on what you heard and the information you gathered the last 24 hours what were the last minutes like for harrison ford as he brought it in by all accounts pretty admirably on that golf course? >> he did a very admirable job, as a matter of fact.

pilots all the time we train for always looking for a place to go should there be a problem, and particularly after takeoff. what are you going to do looking at the environment around every runway end to determine where you should go, should something go wrong. harrison had few options there, in this particular case around santa monica but he did a really excellent job of finding the right spot, putting the plane down safely without injuring anyone. >> we're glad he did. tom, thanks for your insight on this story. appreciate it. >> good to be here. >> the ntsb is investigating another frightening plane scare a delta jetliner skidding off a runway during thursday's snowstorm at laguardia airport. the plane crashed into a fence just feet before flushing bay. nbc's stephanie gosk is near the airport with more on it. good morning to you. >> good morning. a few hours ago cranes came in and removed the plane so air

traffic can get back to normal at laguardia. from our vantage point here, you get a good sense how much water surrounds this airport. it is a notoriously difficult place to land, all of the water, short runways and in bad weather it only gets harder. passengers on delta flight 1086 say the landing felt perfectly normal. at first. then the plane started to skid. >> you can tell people didn't have seat belts on tight. they were getting bounced around. >> what many didn't grasp until an emergency exit off the win wasow close they had come to tumbling into the water. >> just survived a plane crash. >> it would have went into, because the only thing that stopped us was that gate. >> reporter: the aircraft with 127 passengers and five crew members, landed on laguardia's run way 13 in snow and fog. two thirds of the way it skidded off to the left hitting an embankment and fence. the left wing badly damaged,

ground crews reported back to the tower. >> leaking fuel on the left side of his aircraft heavily. >> leaking fuel? >> affirmative. >> reporter: they are looking closely at a number of factors including weather. airport managers say the runway had just been plownd and earlier flights landed safely. >> two planes landed and reported, quote, good braking action on the runways. >> reporter: 24 passengers suffered minor injuries. several were taken to local hospitals. the rest felt lucky to escape unharmed. >> feel like i've got my crash out of the way so odds are in my favor. i'm good. going to play the lottery. >> reporter: and the airport officials say he believes the pilot did everything he could to slow this plane down and the proof of that he says are how few injuries there were. you get a good sense of what a close call this was yesterday. >> and terrifying for the passengers, stephanie. one of them is with us.

she was in the first row of that plane and she's with us. jamie, good morning. >> good morning. >> i should mention some might recognize you, you're on bravo, on the show jersey belle. you were coming to new york and tell me when you landed, did you know right away something was wrong? >> as we were -- right before the landing gear came out i heard the pilot discuss whether we were going to be in a holding pattern or not. the flight attendants were discussing it. the pilot came on and said we're not going to be in a holding pattern. they are going to bring us in. i thought that's a good sign. then i saw the runway and it was just white. and i, you know, it's nerve-racking but you think it's going to be fine. then the wheels hit the runway and you know, normally when a plane lands the pilot you know releases the brakes and there's that pull that has the plane slowing down. there was none of that. you don't realize how fast a plane is coming in to land when

there's no brakes. so you're -- you are sliding for thousands of feet and you know what's happening but your mind can't really get there and you're holding on and then i would say probably halfway through the runway i felt the nose of the plane jerk left, and you know, it started to really shake and bump and oxygen masks were falling and things falling and -- it's at that moment that you know this you know, your mind starts to go to this is really not the way it's supposed to happen. >> you're in the first row so not only can you see what's happening and you are very, very close to the water you could hear as well. >> i could hear and hear the pilot saying we have no power, we have no power. so you know, i was the first -- i could see the water, and you know, there's a moment where you don't know what you're going to hit. what's going to slow us down. will it be a plane, the airport, you have no idea. and then i saw the rock and then the water. it's at that moment your mind

goes what happens if you go into the water? do planes sink, do they float? will i ever see my kids again. >> you really were terrified in that moment. >> terrified because you're not prepared. you think you are, i fly every month for work, i'm a frequent flyer. i feel very safe on planes. especially delta, i fly them every month. but it's in that moment that you're so unprepared for what happens, i saw the water coming i saw what the pilots were seeing. the pilots did everything they could but it's no different than a car that's lost control on ice. but except that we're going hundreds of miles an hour. >> and the short few moments i have i know the pilot came up to you. >> he did. >> right after this and what did he say? >> he opened the door and walked out and it was at that moment i think i released once i saw him

you know, here he is, a man, i do a digital series that rooted in the human connection, and i looked right at him and he looked at me and i sort of came unglued. here is this man who saw what i saw, and his only concern was for his passengers. he walked up to me and put his arm around me and said i'm going to get you off this plane. and he did. and the new york police department and the port authority police department, i mean, the human connection in its finest as we all got out of this plane, and they lifted us off because the ramps never deflated and they got us to safety and everybody did an slept job. it really was -- it really was a life changing experience. >> everyone rose to the occasion. jamie, thank you for sharing your story. >> thank you for having me. >> willie. thank you. meanwhile, the hillary clinton e-mail controversy is widening. federal officials are looking for possible security lapses in her messages while she was secretary of state.

andrea mitchell has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. state department officials are reviewing the 55,000 pages of e-mails that hillary clinton turned over last year to see whether she violated state department policies. by storing sensitive information even if it wasn't classified, on that private server. contrary to some reports she has not reached a conclusion. it would not have been a violation of the all of these were routine. the larger problem is that this will now take months to review. it's adding fuel to the fire of the republican-led benghazi investigation. with congress demanding more e-mails and balls this is going to take long it will drag on through the early months if not a year of her planned presidential campaign. while she is of course dominating potential challengers they are all watching closely. former maryland governor o'malleyly is going to be in new hampshire. elizabeth warren is heading to selma. joe biden is watching and waiting. >> as you say this is not going

anywhere. thanks so much. >> turning to the weather and a few things, get through the next few days. t get through the next few days and then what? >> then things get better. they really do. yesterday, in kentucky it was a mess. a couple of jackknifed tractor-trailers. they got a record 17.9 inches of snow. the interstate completely blocked for at least 20 hours. folks were stuck on the road. over 400 vehicles. nobody seriously injured, but it was a nightmare. the back up figure for third miles. we have a report of two jackknifed tractor-trailers on the same interstate. state police say they are going to get those cleared. they will not have a repeat of what they saw yesterday. we do have a repeat of the bitterly cold temperatures. this is the last blast. we have about 70 cities setting records including toledo and

in the south indian ocean within a narrow arc half the size of pennsylvania ships scanned the sea bottom where experts believe the wreckage of malaysia air flight 370 will be found. >> we have covered less than half the area. so this -- we're still confident that we will find the aircraft. >> for the families of the missing passengers among them american philip wood it has been a year of anguish. do you think he'd be sitting here with me and anybody else talking about this a year later? >> no. honestly after the first few weeks i thought something is going to pan out. we'll get something. we'll get at least an inkling of knowledge of evidence and we have -- so here we are a year later and no. >> the plane was traveling from kuala lumpur to beijing. 38 minutes into its six-hour journey the crew routinely acknowledges a handover to vietnamese controllers.

it is their final message. then, the transponder that identifies the jet the controllers abruptly stops transmitting along with other communication. the start of a series of turns will send it towards the indian ocean. all pointing to a deliberate act. >> it's obvious by the flight path that this was an intent to take the airplane somewhere other than to beijing. and i started thinking about well, if i'm going to try to ditch this airplane or put it somewhere where nobody will ever find it, where will i take it? to the middle of the south indian ocean because it's deep. >> investigators searched the home of the pilots, seizing a flight sumimulator. hoping to find clues. meantime, in a commercial the simulator a veteran captain

demonstrates to me how a few simple key strokes can send the autopilot flying on a new course. >> i'm going to select heady, and now i'll turn to the left. >> and i see that dotted line is moving that's the path we'll take? >> there's the direction of the aircraft where it will be turning to. >> a year later, conspiracy theories about flight 370 abound. in january, malaysian authorities labeled it an accident. but offered no proof. none of it comforts the families of those who are gone without a trace. >> i have had dozens and dozens and dozens of people tell me where this airplane is. okay. if you're going to tell me where this airplane is give me at least one iota of physical tangible evidence it is. >> the wood family is relying on faith to get them through this. the searchers expect to finish the work in may and existing

other people and being who you are and knowing the passions in your heart and pursuing that full force. >> it's the different reflections. they start with anecdotes. sometimes somebody you know and there is scripture that bears out that lesson. how do you get through in this day and age where it seems like everything is focused on the external and not the internal. >> remembering where your foundation and identity lies. i have been taught that through my family growing up in a faith-based home and knowing my identity lies in god and faith. that's what a lot of it is about. i think the story mixes in with scripture and makes the message really clear. i'm excited about it. >> this is something you have learned and focused on and known very personally and have bn ca about your accident and going through dark times and having to come to grips with the new you and how that happened.

after it was landing. 27 passengers and five crew members landing in the snow and fog. upon landing it skidded into the embankment. flushing meadows bay is right there. it damaged the plane and it was leaking fuel. the passengers had to climb off on to the wing of the plane. there were minor injuries. 24 passengers with minor injuries and five were taken to local hospitals. savannah talked to one of the passengers who appears on bravo. she asked what she heard and saw as they were getting ready to land. i heard them say we have no power. i could see the water. there is a moment where you don't know what you are going to hit. what is going to slow us down. the plane, the airport? you have no idea. i saw the rocks and the water.

it's at that moment that your mind goes what happens if you go into the water? do planes sink or do they float? will i ever see my kids again? >> savannah asked her what the pilot said to her immediately after landing. take a listen. >> i looked at him and he looked at me and i came unglued in that moment. here's this man who saw what i saw and his only concern was for his passengers. he walked up to me and said i will get you off of this plane. and he did. >> pretty remarkable. the plane was removed from the runway and an extensive operation. the cranes that was taken overnight and they lifted the plane off the runway. the ntsb is investigating because the runway had been plowed before the plane landed. a couple of planes landed and

and we live in a world where all this media is available, social media for people to be anonymously so cruel. >> yes. >> tell us what your book says about that. >> yeah. i think it just really focuses on what is your foundation and keep that true to yourself. don't let anything distract you from what you really need to focus on. so i feel like we have so many things now in our generation. yeah. inthat gram.instagram. twitter. facebook. i think it is just recognizing who you are as a woman and being confident in it. that radiates so much about yourself. >> your parents are divorced. you talk so much about that. so many young kids have difficulty dealing with issues like that so you don't only tackle beauty in your book but real issues from inside too. >> yeah completely. it is lot of just stories from my life and relays a message in each chapter.

editor stephanie cisco. she's here in her "50 shades of grey" outfit. >> french maid-ish. >> with spring cleaning about to start, we came up with our 15th anniversary issue at "real simple" in april, we came up with some tips that will be shortcuts. >> prove it. >> whether it comes to any kind of hard floors hardwood tile vinyl, all you need is a microfiber mop like this one and then a spray bottle with water and two tablespoons of vinegar. spray the floor as you mop or you can just spray it directly on the pad. >> are you okay with hardwood? >> absolutely. point is you don't want too much liquid on there. then you throw this head in the wash and you'll be set for the next time. >> terrific. >> cleaning lamps. i've always wondered about that. >> yes. lamp shades are something we forget to clean in our normal cleaning routine. pet fur, dust tends to gather on there. all you need is a lint roller.

take it around the shade all the way across. if anything gets stuck in that seam on the bottom or top, just blow it out with a hair drier. >> that's not going to happen. >> never. >> but it is a good idea. >> then when it comes to blinds if you have cloth blinds like these, take that lint roller and wipe across those rather than vacuuming like you might normally do. but if you have wooden or slatted blinds our favorite tips is to use a driver sheet and just swipe it across. that gives an electro static barrier so the dust doesn't land on it and i don't clean as often. >> it also works on static cling on dresses. you put it on your legs. >> okay. >> ceiling fans. dust on top of ceiling fans is like that whole idea of out of sight, out of mind. the minute you turn it on once it gets warmer that dust is everywhere. our trick at "real simple" is to take an old pillowcase, a spray bottle with water and vinegar.

>> no baking soda. >> you spritz it into the pillowcase. then all you need to do -- hoda you're probably the tallest. demonstrate this -- >> no no. >> all you need to do is put it around the blade. >> she won't do housework. i'm sorry. she refuses. >> pull that on that blade and pull that dust off and it lands in the pillowcase instead of on the floor. >> okay good. it's so sightly. >> when you're doing your spring cleaning, any disinfecting most often people don't actually read the directions. you have to let disinfectants sit for ten minutes. >> oh. >> so spray your hard surfaces. let it sit, do that disinfecting work it actually lifts up the grime while you go on to your next step then come back. >> dog hair. >> it looks like blake's been here. >> you no he this with wrangler
