a huge frat party gone wrong. the garage they were partying on collapsed underneath them. today marks the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday. a live report from selma, alabama, commemoration of the historic march. good evening. i'm terry mcgovern. >> and i'm peggy bunker. we're on at this special time because of golf. new details on hayward's second attempted kidnapping in as many weeks. police released this sketch today of the man wanted for trying to pull a girl into his car yesterday afternoon. the 15-year-old was walking home from school when the man grabbed her without warning. a very similar incident happened on february 20th. this near the corner of ebony and joshua streets. in both cases, the girls were able to fight off the man. the man was driving a white car. the suspect descriptions have similarities but also some differences. this sketch was released after the february 20th attack. investigators are asking anyone

with information to please come forward. the drive-by shooting in san jose one dead one hospitalized. it happened about 2:00 this morning near oak street. officers found two men in their 20s each shot at least once. both taken to the hospital. one died there. the other is expected to be recovered. in san luis obispo chaos after a garage collapses underneath dozens of students. they were celebrating what they called st. fratty's day. about 6:30 this morning, the whole roof collapsed. we slowed down this footage so you can see how it suddenly happened. no one was inside the garage at the time. the two students on top of the garage and fell were trapped and had to be rescued. in all, eight students were treated for injuries. in san jose a very different kind of mess and these pictures are hard to look at in the middle of this historic drought.

a water main broke spilling water all over lincoln avenue. crews shut down water service for most of the day for repairs. no word on what caused that break break. it is still technically winter but you wouldn't know it from being outside today. checking in with rob mayeda who's been watching the temperatures. what a beautiful saturday. >> yeah, a lot of sunshine. 70s from the north bay to san francisco over to san jose. right now, still close to 75 degrees in parts of our microclimates around the south bay. looking at temperatures close to 80 around santa teresa and areas south of downtown. very warm day. as you get to gilroy, 82 degrees. oakland, 70 degrees. some of the east bay microclimates, looking at temperatures now around the tri-valley still near 80 in dublin. the warm weather continues out west. that's the view at ocean beach and a closer view around san francisco shows a spread of

lower 60s on the west side of the peninsula and still some low 70s out near pacific center plaza. temperatures by 6:00, dropping into the 60s. tonight, patchy low clouds returning. as we head towards tomorrow morning, we will see low clouds starting to spill back in with temperatures in the 40s and 50s and it's a forecast you'll lose some sleep over. remember, spring forward happens tonight. clouds hinting at cooler changes, maybe some drizzle out towards the coast. full forecast in just a few minutes. marching 50 years later across the country and here in the bay area people walked to remember bloody sunday in selma, alabama. nearly 100 people marched across the golden gate bridge today, many holding up signs and chanting in honor of the marchers in selma who was met with teargas and billy clubs when they marched for equal rights in 1965. today as marchers say while progress has been made towards civil rights for all, there's still a lot more work to be done. >> segregation and separation is still happening.

and i want to see it stopped. >> back then they were saying black lives matter. and we are still saying unfortunately, that black lives matter, brown lives matter. and in this country today, 50 years later after selma, we still have a situation where they're trying to -- >> today's march was peaceful and did not disrupt traffic. no arrests, no trouble at all reported. president obama traveled to selma, alabama, today to join tens of thousands who are celebrating the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday. a pivotal turning point in the civil rights movement. jay gray was there for the president's visit and zwroinjoins us live from selma where the celebration continues. jay? >> reporter: good evening, peggy. a lot of people say that what happened here 50 years ago was the last revolution in the civil rights movement. but those who were here then and back today are quick to point out it was far from their last step in the journey. ♪

voices of freedom climb above the clouds in selma just like they have for a half century here. it was 50 years ago today a group of peaceful protesters marching for equality including the right to vote were violently turned back as they tried to cross the edmund pettus bridge. >> we were beaten teargassed some were left bloody right here on this bridge. >> reporter: congressman john lewis was a foot soldier on the bridge that day. >> i tell you, it's good to be in selma one more time. >> reporter: back with tens of thousands, including former president george bush, first lady laura, and close to 100 members of congress to remember what happened here and how far those difficult first steps have carried our nation. >> if someone had told me when we were crossing this bridge that one day i would be back

oscar-winning documentary about his case. he leaked secret information to media outlets in 2013. after fleeing the country, he was granted temporary asylum in russia. today we talked about wanting to return to switzerland where he once worked undercover for the cia. >> i do think switzerland would be a great sort of political option because of their historical neutrality because of some of the involvement in the past. switzerland asserts that rules matter and defense of our liberties matter. >> snoed season charged with two counts of theft of government property. if he comes back to the united states for a trial, he could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. while snowden is seen as a criminal others see him as a whistle-blower whistle-blower. here in the bay area an agency designed to listen to and protect whistle-blowers is being

blasted by one of its own. it now appears that washington is listening. vicky nguyen has the latest. >> reporter: last week we told you about derrell whitman, a whistle-blower investigator who got so fed up he blew the whistle on his own agency. now it looks like someone's listening. >> we're here for a very serious purpose today. >> reporter: they showed up outside the san francisco headquarters of the osha region 9 office. >> i know he went public on nbc. >> reporter: in a show of support for derrell whitman. for the past five years, he's worked for osha as a whistle-blower investigator. his job? to look at claims of retaliation against workers who spoke out about public safety issues. >> when i found that this agency was abusing them neglecting them and ignoring them then i had to stand up and report that. >> reporter: whitman says he discovered a pattern of mismanagement and pressure to meet quotas. he says managers told him to close out cases quickly instead

of investigating them. >> creates victims for the whistle-blowers that come to us. >> reporter: osha's own numbers show the agency-issued merit findings 16 times out of 562 investigations since 2009. that's just 2.8% of the cases. nationally, the numbers are equally dismal at 2.7%. whitman says those numbers should be closer to 30%. but after he shared his story with the investigative unit whitman got a call from the united states office of special counsel. he says the agency is now looking into his claims and considering whether to take them to the office of the inspector general. he calls it a step forward. >> when we don't step up and do the right thing, it's not just us. it's not just our fellow worker. it's the public as a whole that's then at risk. >> reporter: meanwhile, whitman's story has energized workers for the union. they want penalties for companies that retaliate against workers who blow the whistle and they're calling on the

department of labor to protect the public. >> they have to clean this agency up. they have to start enforcing the law and they have to start protecting whistle-blowers and putting these executives in jail for threatening the health and safety of not only the workers but the public at large. >> reporter: it's the reason whitman put his own career on the line to speak out for the millions of workers in safety-sensitive industries like airlines or pipeline safety. he says they look to osha for protection when they raise red flags. and right now, he says they aren't getting it. >> americans are ready to begin to reach out and say, this is the kind of society we want. we teach this to our children. i keep thinking if we teach our children to be honest to report problems to work with people cooperatively, that's what we want. >> reporter: speaking out has come at a cost for whitman. the whistle-blower investigator now turned whistle-blower himself. >> i am on ice as it were. i've been ordered not to talk about my work inside the agency. so here i am.

first of its kind store has opened in washington state. recreational marijuana now legal statewide. but what makes this business so unique is it's being run by the local government. nbc's katherine cook shows us how the mayor is all for the idea. >> reporter: caught on camera, the mayor buying marijuana. ten years ago, this would have been a very different story. but today in north bonaville, washington, the mayor wants everyone to know about his historic purchase. it's the first made at the cannabis corner the first government-run marijuana store in the nation. >> it's taken a year and a half of the hard work of all the people on the board and staff to get to this point.

>> reporter: the mayor has been a recreational pot smoker since high school. but that's not why he pushed for this. north bonaville has been in an economic pit for years. he saw this as a way to dig out of it. money earned at the municipality-run pot shop will go into a government-run pot, so to speak, not the city's general fund. but the city can apply for grants to use it. >> we've already been talking with them about maybe upgrading the city park for the kids. it's pretty pathetic. we have two little swings. >> reporter: the can analysisnabis is sourced from local areas. >> you don't have to be to amsterdam. kind of like bartenders. >> reporter: will help you bring what you want. bring your driver's license and responsibility to prove you're an adult. >> it's a positive spin on it. it's not like we're selling drugs. >> reporter: actually that's exactly what they're doing.

but it's legal now. a concept everyone is still getting used to kind of like selling pot to help a city back on its feet. >> just leading the way for the entire nation in what's long overdue. >> times they are changing. that was nbc's katherine cook reporting. skunk love is in the air. and it's not very pleasant for people across the state. animal control officers say skunks are on the prowl for mates earlier than normal because of the warm weather. they say the best way to keep skunks from hanging around your home is keeping all food and water indoors. >> we have a skunk problem in our yard. and it's endless. >> you do? >> yeah they love our house apparently. >> are you keeping your food and water indoors? >> yes. yes. >> but it's not just skunks enjoying the sun. for more on the heat meteorologist rob mayeda with the microclimate forecast and

maybe a few thoughts about skupgsskupg skunks. >> one of the things you didn't know about our weather. hopefully we get some cooler temperatures to calm the skunks down. 75 right now in san jose. 70 across the board. one of the warm spots, south of downtown san jose. we reached close to 80 out by santa teresa a bit earlier. right now, oakland also still pretty warm. 70 degrees. highs this time of year should be in the low to mid-60s. but it feels more like maybe may or june outside. late-day sea breeze moving into san francisco at 70 degrees. low clouds have been way offshore during the day. these will make a comeback heading into tonight which will set us up for a cooler day out on the coast. the winds at times have been briefly offshore. but the wind forecast tomorrow shows a bit more of a sea breeze coupled with the low clouds coming back towards the coast and around the peninsula bringing our temperatures down probably for san francisco on the coast tomorrow. inland spots will again see another fairly warm day. the weather headlines for the week ahead, there is a chance of midweek rain.

but for the end of the weekend, we'll begin to see the low clouds offshore make a comeback and could even have drizzle for the morning for tomorrow. and you see those mostly cloudy skies. we'll see a pretty warm afternoon in the valleys. for the morning, areas of low clouds maybe misty skies and a few spots around 8:00. as you head towards lunchtime, seeing the temperatures climb into the mid-70s again by around 3:00 in the afternoon around san jose, 75 degrees. upper 70s around los gatos. san francisco, a little bit cooler tomorrow. upper 60s. around the north bay, low 70s in the tri-valleys. seeing the temperatures soaring into the mid to upper 70s. cooler on the coast. around san francisco, still warmer inland. there will be chance of rain coming back to the bay area. not a strong system but it's going to be strong enough to break down that ridge of high pressure. by wednesday, we expect areas north of san francisco will see a brief chance of showers. watch what happens here. thursday and friday that high

starts to build back. as we get back to your workweek forecast, we have a chance of showers coming in on wednesday. by thursday and friday the temperatures begin to climb on up. as we head towards next weekend, you see that warm-up, thursday into friday we'll probably hang onto it by next saturday. and perhaps by next sunday we hope to manage a chance of a few more showers coming in by next sunday. the end of the weekend looking pretty mild. two chances of showers ahead. we hope they materialize. that will be for wednesday and by the end of next weekend. >> and hopefully that will take care of the skunks as well. >> skunk-loving weather. still to come people are already starting to stake out spots along the parade route in san francisco. >> a report from the huge chinese new year celebration coming up.

sea world in san diego is stopping one of its most popular shows, the sea lions live show is on hiatus for two weeks. they're helping to rescue sea lion pups who are showing up in large numbers along the california coast. they've rescued more than twice the regular number this year. the park is building two temporary pools for the sea lions. this is the first time that animal rescues have forced a shutdown of any of its shows. experts say unusually warm ocean water is forcing nursing mothers to head out further for food. and what started out as a facebook dream has turned into a horse racing reality. kimberly trae haserry has the story. >> reporter: this 3-year-old

colt is making quite a name for himself. >> when you get involved in a sport like this you stay optimistic that you'll have a good horse but this is beyond our dreams. >> reporter: on valentine's day, the horse won the el camino derby and will compete later this month in kentucky. >> if he wins that race he definitely deserves a chance to show his stuff as churchill downs. >> reporter: but if winning big is in this horse's future they'll have to make some room in the winner's circle. you could have kept him all to yourself. >> yeah. >> reporter: but you didn't. >> no. it's not fun being in the winner's circle by yourself. >> reporter: this facebook group, a punch of race horse enthusiasts from around the country and canada took a special interest in the horse. so when his owners decided to sell shares of the horse, 30 people pounced. >> some people have one share. some have more than one. i have like 1% of the horse.

good evening. i'm peggy bunker. >> and i'm terry mcgovern. developing news in the south bay. police are concentrating their search for a convicted child molester in the area of south monroe street near poorpark in san jose. people have been searching for johnell carter since yesterday afternoon. he escaped during a doctor's appointment. carter was spotted later about half a mile away at the sierra crest apartments where he changed out of his jail uniform into someone else's clothes. the massive search included
