right now at 8:30 straight out of the movies thieves take only minutes to steal six cars from the south bay. here is the warning from the dealer missing several cars. >> thank you for joining us for this essential edition of nbc bay area news. we're on right now because of boxing. a fremont dealership owner says he has a warning for others because of a crime spree there the south bay. the burglaries happened to dealership on thornton avenue as well as dakota road in fremont. this is near highway 880 and 84

in fremont bay area. and pretty incriminating video, as well nannette. >> reporter: yes, hopefully that will help the police catch the suspects. we're here along thornton avenue on one block where there are a string of four dealerships on just this one block alone. but within a few more miles around here we're told that actually ten cars were stolen just this week. and three of those were overnight. this is surveillance video from phantom motors which looks like there is a group of several people smashing the windows, then they went through desks and offices. the dealers believe the thieves are looking for keys to vehicles and the titles. the fremont police responded to one of the vehicles within four minutes but found no one. an investigations team came by earlier here at phantom to look for clues and evidence as to who the suspects are.

workers are fed up with this crime spree. >> there is a bunch of guys that just came in very comfortable like they owned the place. you know? came right in there and about maybe ten guys came right in there. you know we have fingerprints and surveillance video, we have fremont pd as well. >> alex zamarri is warning dealerships to be on the lookout and keep keys that could be accessible to thieves. he estimates just the loss at his shop is $35,000 wholesale for the cost of the cars it doesn't include the cost for replacing the keys which can be expensive for european cars. back here live in fremont, the dealership at phantom is still open. in fact the repairmen are working overtime. they are trying although they have the plywood up on the windows they're trying to reinforce it on the other side just in case the thieves come back. they say the thieves have struck this particular dealership four times now and they really want

these people caught. live in fremont, nannette miranda, nbc bay area news. all right, thank you very much. and to developing news police are concentrating their search for a convicted child molester earlier today. they were searching for janell carter who was spotted about a half mile away at the sierra crest apartments where he apparently went into a unit changed out of his jail unit and into civilian clothes. the search includes k-9 units and police officers. and one man is dead after a drive by shooting in san jose near oak street. officers say when they arrived they found two men in their 20s each shot at least one, both taken to the hospital. one died there. the other expected to recover. the police are yet to release information about the gun and the car in the drive by. and in haywood, this sketch

was released today after a man tried to pull a girl into his car yesterday afternoon. the 15-year-old was walking home from school by herself when the man grabbed her without any warning, near sycamore avenues and whitman, this happened earlier near joshua street in both cases the girls were able to fight off the man and run for help. the two suspects have similarities and also differences, this was the sketch released after ofthe february 20th attack police are asking anybody with information to please come forward. and take a look after this collapsed in san luis obispo students were celebrating st. fratties's day on the san luis obispo campus. right there, about 6:30 a.m.

the roof actually collapses under the weight of all the students. nobody was inside the garage there, you see they all sink in the middle. two students on top of the garage fell and were trapped and had to be rescued. in all eight students were treated for injuries. happening now, a live look at san francisco's chinatown, crews have a lot of cleaning up to do because just about an hour ago thousands drilled the streets for the chinese new year's parade. officials say it is one of the biggest, thousands came out to see the elaborate costumes, and bands, you get the idea. they used hundreds of pounds of glitter and miles and miles of decorative paper and red and gold because the colors system symbolize good fortune in their history. >> it symbolizes lost dragons.

morning, patchy low clouds especially around san francisco and the coast when we could have misty skies returning to the coast. and in the meantime another warm day with 70s in the forecast for the valleys we'll have a look at that. and the best chance of rain coming up. back to you. all right, rob, thank you so much. starting tomorrow people living in san jose will have to cut back on water use whether they like it or not. watering only allowed before 8:00 a.m. and after 8:00 p.m. at night. water officials hope the rules will help san jose meet the state's goal of reducing water use by about 20%. the water report out last month said that california did meet that goal but water use will probably go up now that the days are getting longer. >> it is affecting all of us. if we don't think about it seriously, we don't know what is going to happen later. because it's not raining at all. >> now, san jose imports half of its water from the sierra, and

also last month's measurement showed snowpack was only about 19% of normal level. well turn off the tap or else it could turn up your tab, here in southern california the water rates will get higher. three bay area water agencies are considering hikes up to 30%. the news reported it is because revenue is actually down. water agencies have been selling less water as customers conserve during the drought. folks across the bay area have cut back water usage by 13%. the santa clara water district serves nearly 2 million people. it will discuss this issue at a public meeting to be held on tuesday. marching 50 years later, across the country and right here in the bay area people walk to remember bloody sunday in selma, alabama. nearly 100 people marched across the golden gate bridge today, many holding up signs and marching to honor the people in selma after they held up signs

and were hit with billy clubs to fight for equal rights. there is still a lot of work to be done the president said. separation and segregation is still happening. and i want to see it stopped. >> back then they were saying black lives matter, and we are still saying unfortunately having to say that black lives matter brown lives matter. >> today's march was peaceful did not disrupt traffic. and here you can see pretty dark with the time change. 50 years ago, demonstrators tried to cross that bridge and were attacked by law enforcement. president obama traveled to selma to join the thousands to celebrate the movement on bloody sunday. nbc's jay gray was there for the president's visit and has more.

>> reporter: voices of hope and freedom climb above the clouds in selma. just like they have for a half century here. it was 50 years ago today that a group of peaceful protesters marched for equality including the right to vote were violently turned back as they tried to cross the bridge. >> we were tear gassed some of us left bloody right here on this bridge. >> reporter: congressman john louis was a foot soldier there during that time. >> it is good to be in selma one more time. >> reporter: back there was first lady laura and close to 100 members of congress to remember what happened here and how far those difficult steps have carried our nation. >> if someone had told me that we were crossing this bridge that one day i would be back here introducing the first african-american president, i

new details now on security measures at pg&e sub stations. a huge fence is going up around the south bay of pg&e sub stations. this could have been the target of an attack that attack triggered a bay area investigation into the facilities at 14 different facilities in california. well, that investigation found that two facilities appeared to be completely unmanned. at several others security guards failed to controlpatrol the perimeter. pg&e says that this new fence at the sub station is part of a $100 million security improvement plan for all of the facilities. the met calf line is the first location where they are making improvements. now along with the fence they are also installing other high tech measures. the improvement should be finished by the end of the month.

pg&e hopes to have all of the upgrades done by the end of the month. newly released video leading to the suspension of two security guards at fremont high school. look at this video in fremont in january. you can see a student confronted by two security guards. then they put him in a chokehold. you can see them drag him across your screen and into the school's office. off camera, you see them dragging him there. one of the officers punches him several times, again that happens off camera. after the incident the student was suspended for five days. the security officers received no disciplinary action at first. the student's family is now looking into legal action despite an apology that came yesterday from district leaders. and sold in pure concentrated form. however, after a ohio teen overdosed and died from it there is a push to keep it

illegal. logan steiner was found dead. his presidents say a friend gave him the caffeine. the autopsy showed he had 23 times as much caffeine in his system as the typical caffeine or soda drinker. >> i think it should be banned unless it's in the hands of a licensed person to sell it. >> this can kill and cause losses you will be held responsible in court. >> now, pure caffeine is not regulated. and in a lawsuit filed yesterday, logan's family insists that the companies don't provide enough warning about the product. and apple tech giant's new product could be the highest worn ever. product watch will beat out google's androidware. the smart watch works like an iphone except you wear it on

today. you will see them turn back on as they will more strongly towards 5:00 tomorrow. that will line up a little bit to the cooler coast. low clouds will spill locally inland for tomorrow. we'll probably manage a built of drizzle with the low clouds through the morning, and then lunchtime, notice nothing but sunshine in the inner bay. tomorrow, you will see low clouds spilling in once again. the temperatures for the morning, 40s, 50s, maybe misty skies, lunchtime, you will see temperatures begin to climb in the mid-60s at san jose and morgan hill. by mid-afternoon, mid-70s again for morgan hill san jose and out towards the trivalley. running a little cooler tomorrow around san francisco. the official high temperatures tomorrow mid-to-upper 70s, closer to los gatos, san francisco with clouds cooling down, san francisco, highs there in the upper 60s to low 70s. still mid-70s around the tri-valley, we'll finish the

weekend on a dry note. the window of opportunity for seeing a little more rain should come in as we get to wednesday, we'll see the high eventually break down enough as we get into tuesday and wednesday. we hope it will do more than this. just bringing us showers there in san francisco, and areas north for wednesday by thursday, friday you can see clear skies once again and the five-day outlook, as we get back to the work week we'll bring in cooling and clouds for tuesday. and wednesday, the best chance of seeing showers and then those temperatures rebound as we head to the middle of the week mid-70s again around san francisco approaching friday. >> all right, rob, thank you so much. well coming up next the baby boom that is sorely needed. giant pandas giving birth in the wild, however, a new virus that could affect this endangered species.

seaworld in san diego us stopping one of its most popular shows, the sea lion show is stopping for a while, instead

they are helping rescue the sea lion pups who are showing up sick on the coast, seaworld has helped to rescue more than 100 sea lions this year more than twice the normal number. seaworld is also building pools to help the sea lions, saying it is the first time that they have shut down from its shows. the nursing mothers are heading out for food and leaving the pups behind. wow, a baby boom certainly not the kind you may expect. for decades, the giant panda has been on the endangered species list. however, they seem to be making a comeback they traveled to china to check out the panda. >> reporter: at least, good news for china's endangered giant pandas. beloved all over the world. the number increasing over the last ten years according to the survey by the chinese government. the results are great, it shows

more attention. research has spent three years counting pandas covering nearly 12 acres of mountainous forests. they covered tracks and used cameras to conclude that 1,864 pandas remain in the wild. there are a record 375 now in captive breeding programs. who can forget this famous trio the world's only known triplets born last summer. i got to meet the adorable cubs when they were just 2 months old. just last year 23 cubs were born in the mountains where we joined them for an afternoon snack. most of the pandas in this kindergarten area are between a year and a year and a half old. and they have an enormous appetite. here too, the opportunity to be a volunteer panda keeper has brought young people from around

the world who pay the breeding center $50 a day to feed and take care of the pandas. but there is a dark spot on this otherwise encouraging picture. a virus has killed four pandas at a facility in northern china. experts are holding an emergency meeting in beijing this week encouraged they say, by unprecedented levels of public awareness and support. >> because everybody thinks they realize that the panda is vital, is vital to protect. >> reporter: for an iconic animal, which may well be out of danger, may well have turned an important corner. ian williams china. >> great story. coming up get ready to spring forward. we're all going to lose an hour of sleep tonight. we'll tell you why it might be good for your health. what is the matter, peggy? who wants to try a new burger? that's good! it's really good. very juicy.
