sunnyvale, multijurisdictional. bob redell joins us live from the command post in sunnyvale where police say they tracked the suspects to a creek, bob? >> reporter: that's correct. good morning to you, sam. when these two carjacking suspects ditched their stolen car at the end of this street here in this neighborhood in sunnyvale, they did run into stevens creek which runs around along highway 85 and there police k9 tracked them inside to a culvert, a large drain pipe with enough room to crawl. in. there were sounds of flash bangs an hour ago. no sign of the suspects. as you can see there's many law enforcement agencies out here, several agencies in thet(0ñ so bay and they have several blocks of this sunnyvale neighborhood at remington and robbin way around as they search for the two men who used a gun to carjack the driver and you should look at the video of the white cadillac escalade around midnight at tully and lucretia in san jose. the driver is doing okay. they were able to track the suv

to meridian and willow also in san jose, when they began a pursuit, a chase up 280 to the neighborhood in sunnyvale. >> the car stopped at a gate that ised ajay september to the creek. the suspects, there were two in the vehicle, exited the vehicle and fled towards the creek. >> you say a weapon. what kind? >> we found a handgun adjacent to the vehicle. we think the suspects may have dropped the weapon as they fled from the vehicle. >> reporter: but san jose police are not certain if the suspects have any other weapons so they are considering them to be armed and dangerous. they say they are both hispanic men in their 20s and you can see there are several blocks in this neighborhood that are surrounded. they have a large perimeter as they still search for the two men. there isn't a shelter in place per se, but of course if people have any questions they have a command center if residents have any concerns as they look for the two men who carjacked a dryer in san jose around

midnight last night. reporting live in sunnyvale, boñ redell, "today in the bay." >> a wild start to the morning, thanks very much. developing news out of ferguson, missouri. the police department is now a crime scene after two police officers were shot during what had been a peaceful demonstration. one officer was shot in the face in fact. there was a lot of new video coming out from the scene as well. it's really amazing to see crowds have gathered, the investigation continues as you see crime scene tape still surrounding the shooting area. >> can we get a closer look at what happened? "today in the bay's" kris sanchez, investigators have video following the shooting. >> as we've seen in many protests folks are out there with their phones documenting what is happening and in one particular video you can hear the tension ramping up. you can actually hear shots whizzing by and then you can hear the chaos. [ gunfire ] [ bleep ] [ moaning ]

>> we believe that moaning to be one of the two officers who was shot. we are working to independently confirm the authenticity of this video which someone posted on youtube. we know for a fact that two police officers were shot, a 32-year-old officer was shot in the face, a 41-year-old officer was shot in the shoulder. investigators do not know who fired those shots, but they say that the gunman was on a hill across from the police department, where demonstrators had gathered. the police chief now in charge says that the two officers were from neighboring departments and were only shot because they were cops. >> these police officers were standing there and they were shot just because they were police officers. >> investigators say that it seems the shooter was on a hill across from police headquarters, that's where earlier in the evening this peaceful gathering was happening. these demonstrators gathered to decry the resignation of the

embattled police chief. the rub is his resignation comes with a severance package that includes a year's pay after a scathing department of justice report accused that chief of targeting african-americans and accused his department of boys a. one community activist says the demonstrations are not going to stop until the mayor resigns as well, and the whole police department is disbanded. by the way, the two officers who were shot were conscious when they were loaded into the ambulance and taken to the hospital. the good news is that they are in serious condition this morning but they are expected to survive. >> that is good news and the two officers not actually members of the ferguson police department either. >> no. we saw a number of different uniforms on the scene, a lot of law enforcement gathering to try to keep the peace. didn't work last night. >> thank you very much. we'll continue to cover the story all morning long, check out our website nbcbayarea.com for much more in-depth coverage. a woman found in albany died from a single gunshot wound.

family members found the 37-year-old in her apartment on monday. officers have not announced any suspect or motive. this is the first homicide in albany in more than three years. she was a student at the ucsf dental school, supposed to graduate next year. a burglar turned attacker. officers say this man attacked a homeowner when he interrupted a burglary happened last november on east capitol expressway. investigators released the sketch yesterday. the burglar took off in the man's car. surveillance cameras captured a glimpse of him driving away. leaders in kensington will meet to talk about the search for a new police chief. last month the board voted to end contract negotiations with chief greg harmon who came under fire after a sergeant's gun and badge were stolen by a prostitute in reno. he then aloud the sergeant to remain on the job rather than place him on administrative

leave. we'll continue to wait for any word on the san francisco family injured in an apartment fire in the mission district. we brought you that story breaking news yesterday morning. father and two children seriously injured in that blaze, they're still fighting for their lives. the mother and another child are expected to survive. a warning this morning for parents and pet owners in fremont. that's where a dead bat was found near a popular community center, it tested positive for rabies. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live in fremont. there's also a high school nearby? >> reporter: that's right, good morning, laura, across the street from inkton high school, a community center, a day went by before animal control officers came here to the entrance to pick up this infected dead bat. there's worry about exposure here. this is not video of the actual rabid bat found in fremont on saturday but this is how it would have been acting before it died, distressed as you can see.

the concern is people may have walked by it and tried to help it, and that kids and pets may have actually touched it. >> the disease is transmitted to people vispre see spree via sal. if anyone had a pet or child who played with that bat. >> reporter: the fremont bat may have looked like the one pictured here, the most common to the area. rabies symptoms typically develop one to three months after exposure with tingling in the nerves, mentally altered status, seizures and then coma. if rabies go untreated, a few have died here in the u.s. couple of bats usually test positive for rabies here in almeida county. the public health department of almeida county is asking anyone

or independent contractors. here's the biggest difference. employees must be paid a minimum wage and reimbursed for expenses like gas and vehicle maintenance. google is giving its shuttle drivers a raise starting next month. the move comes amid a growing movement for shuttle drivers to unionize for better treatment from the tech companies they support. google contracts with five shuttle companies. google is going to pay drivers about 4 pucks an hour. apple also revealed this month it will raise wages for its shuttle drivers as well. google has been rated once again as the top place to work in the united states. scott mcgrew, silicon valley companies often listed in the top ten. >> fewer these days, laura, which say good sign. it means other companies in the rest of the country started to figure out treating employees really well like we do in silicon valley pays off. that said we're still number one, at least google is. eastbound an easier drive, fewer cars of course. back to your maps we'll show you the rest of your commute moving from the tri valley, south bay no delays, peninsula clear, the earlier crash in san francisco. a san francisco woman is pleading with burglars asking them to return her mother's ashes. those ashes were taken from a home in petrero hill last month. the ashes were contained in a glass urn shaped like a teardrop, much like the one you see here. hazmat teams gave the all clear after getting a call from deanza college. six students suffered eye irritation. authorities say they found nothing inside the bathrooms to cause concern. a san mateo county sheriff's deputy saved the life of a fellow deputy's son by donating his kidney. 19-year-old garrett ramos has been suffering from kid me failure for five years.

you're watching "today in the bay." a good thursday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. breaking news in the south bay this morning, a chase and those searching for suspects. tow trucks pulling a stolen suv from a sunnyvale neighborhood. police from san jose to sunnyvale are on the hunt for the two suspects right now. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from the command post with what he's learned so far. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. police are condensing their search area here in the neighborhood of remington and robbin. they searched some parts, they're focusing on specific other areas still looking for the two carjacking suspects. about an hour and a half ago law enforcement set off a couple of flash bangs in the stevens creek area where they think they might have had the two carjacking

suspects cornered. not clear if the two men are still in that area. this neighborhood is under lockdown for several blocks. i just mipgsed they released some of the blocks. they are putting a lot of resources in finding the two men who they consider to be armed and dangerous. around midnight the suspects used a gun to carjack a man's cadillac from lucretia and tully. they were able to track the vehicle to meridian and willow. they began a pure suit 280 up through the neighborhood. the men ditched the escalade by the gate to the creek runs along highway 85 and along the way they dropped a small handgun and disappeared into the creek area. >> we've use the the k9 to search for the suspect.

the k9 led us to a water piping area culvert, i haven't been able to see that but it's possible the suspects could be in and around that area and we're looking at that area right now. >> reporter: that was an interview with the lieutenant with the san jose police department that we conducted about just over an hour ago. it's not clear if the men are in the culvert. the culvert is a large drainage pipe not big enough for someone to stand in but large enough for someone to crawl in. two men, described as young hispanic in their 20s. >> thank you, bob. it is 5:32. more breaking news this morning, at least four people were killed and the roof of a five-story cement factory collapsed in bangladesh. the factory was under construction in the port town of mongla. crews are working to rescue

one community activist says they want the mayor to resign as well and want the department disbanded, something the attorney general would consider going forward. the two officers shot were conscious when they left the scene by ambulance. as of this morning they are listed in serious condition but they are expected to survive and we are watching for a press conference planned for 7:00 our time. >> at least a bit of good news amidst the violence there. thank you, kris. kris will follow the latest developments from ferguson all morning long. be sure to tune in to the "today" show for any new developments. after a heating meeting with residents last night about 100 people attended a meeting at sacred heart community services center. some in the audience asked for more training of officers dealing with mentally ill. last month 23-year-old philip watkins was shot and killed. his family says he was depressed

and suicidal. he allegedly lunged at officers with a knife and his family believes he wanted officers to shoot him. >> police departments not just here across the country need to reexamine and reevaluate how they train their officers and what kind of sensitivity training and things of that nature that they're exposing them to. >> one councilman pledged he'd fight to have every officer equipped with body cameras for transparency. pleasanton police released a photo of a man running down a security officer at home depot. this is 21-year-old steven proctor. when his accomplice was stopped by a security guard in the parking lot, proctor hit the officer with his car and then drove off. police have also arrested his accomplice, insley smith. >> 5:36 right now. had a little rain earlier this week, a little touch of it coming for the weekend as well. kristina is monitoring that for us. >> good morning to you, laura and sam, everybody at home.

thanks for joining us on a thursday morning. we do have more shower activity on the way. i with a tonight keep to date with how much we accumulated yesterday. san jose 0.3 of an inch, over a quarter in brentwood, 0.15 in san leandro, morgan hill 0.1 of an inch. san francisco didn't get that much rainfall but there is another chance for that as we get into your weekend. i'll focus in on that in my next report. i like to keep you up to date with what's happening. in the bay area in terms of averages this time of year we're up to 108% of average for this time of year, when it comes to our rainy season in mountain view, and that is a great story to tell. now the one problem is, we're just not getting the snow that we need over tahoe and the snowpack is much more important when it comes to getting out of the drought than our rain-filled reservoirs. we'll focus in on that as well as we meet back here at about :15, we'll update you as to how much they picked up in tahoe and how much more we need

visibility here. highway 4 antioch and west 580 typical patterns for your east bay driving, westbound toward the dublin interchange. fremont 8 oa large cardboard box in the auto mall parkway, in the hov lane but no problems. a report on the disappearance of malaysia airlines flight 370 reveals an air traffic control supervisor may have been sleeping on the job the night the plane vanished. includes transcripts of a conversation between an airline official and an air traffic controller four hours after the plane disappeared. during that conversation, the controller says he needs to wake up his supervisor to confirm the plane's location. >> 5:39. later this morning, teams will resume the search for a military helicopter that crashed off the florida coast yesterday. bad weather has hampered search efforts in the waters near eglin air force base. mourners held a vigil for those aboard the blackhawk helicopter

agents were drunk behind the wheel. >> that is the question and part of what the inspector-general will take a look at. he's been asked to investigate this case. as of this morning, laura, reports indicate both of those agents have been reassigned. police confirmed early this morning the two senior agents being investigated are george oglivie and mark connolly, second in charge of the president's security detail. "the washington post" first reported last week they used flashing lights and a government car to get on the white house grounds, where officers were checking a suspicious package then hit a barrier, after drinking at a retirement party. the paper says officers wanted to conduct a sobriety test and arrest them but a supervisor ordered they be sent home. >> it's egregious the supervisor would let them go. we may never know if they were sober or not because the supervisor let them go. >> reporter: it's the kind of problem new director joe clancy

fremont, that is where a dead bat found near a popular community center tested positive for rabies. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live from fremont to explain what experts want us to look out for. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. this area is popular, a library, soccer field and playground, nearby the irvington community center and afterschool programs. the worry is people walked by where the dead infected bat was found friday night, maybe kids and pets tried to touch it. this is not footage of the rabid bat that was found in fremont but this is how the bat may have been acting before it died, sort of distressed. animal control officers didn't take it away until saturday. you can get infected if you're bitten by a rabid animal or touch its saliva or brain tissue. rabies symptoms typically develop one to three months after e pokeeur. >> nerve symptoms, tingling, altered mental status, seizures,
