communication hill, you can see fog-free this morning, we don't have any cloud cover at least the low clouds. we have a few high level clouds. >> but mainly for effect. >> exactly. the good point earlier we were talking about how it's filtered sunshine, the sun can get through the clouds because they're just thin. that's what we're looking at through the day today. good amount of filtered sunshine. that's going to mean for record warm temperatures. big area of high pressure sitting on top of us, bringing in lots of warm air. tomorrow, cooler and more cloud cover in place with showers for some of us. we'll break down more of that coming up in a little bit. notice temperatures in the 50s for most part. close to 60 in the south bay and san francisco. later today, 72 for your high in -- 76 in san francisco. 82 for the north bay. 82 for the peninsula. 84 for the east bay and the south bay. you know what. >> our average high for this tomb of the year, 60s. >> wow. >> well above that for today.

get out and enjoy. >> 20 griers. >> spf, water, you'll be out side. >> thanks. we have new details this morning about a teenager who was attacked while leaving a bay area mall. 17-year-old christian rasner is in intensive care recovering from brain surgery after attacked by suspected gang members. it happened outside valley fair mall in santa clara. police say two men followed the teen and his friends out of the mall and into the parking lot. they asked the kids which gang they belonged to, when the teens responded they weren't involved in any gangs, the men attacked them. christian was knocked unconscious and rushed to the hospital where a precautionary c.a.t. scan revealed a crack in the back of the head and bleeding in the brain. he went straight into emergency surgery. >> it was pretty harrowing as a parent weep were told before he went in for surgery that in fact he may not survive the surgery. >> well, there are some

encouraging signs for christian. when family members or close friends talk to him, his blood pressure goes up, a sign of recognition. when his breathing tube was removed he coughed. caregivers say that also is a positive sign. police say the attackers are two asian men in their mid-20s. at the time, wearing all black. there is surveillance footage of the men inside the mall, it hasn't been released yet. but no cameras in the parking lot where the attack happened. we have learned of another security breach at a bay area airport. this time, a homeless womanic whatt walked on to a runway at sfo with plans to stowaway on a plane headed to central america. the woman shown in the mugshot said she hasn't been able to find work in the u.s. and wanted to go home to gauatemala. she got the idea from the teen who breached the security last year. the boy hid in a wheel well of a plane and made it all the way to hawaii before discovered.

an investigation is under way in wine country. police shot and killed a man while serving a search warrant in napa. it happened just before 5:00 last night in the alta heights area. police say when they went to the man's house to serve the search warrant for drugs and weapons, at least one officer opened fire. it's unclear what led to the shooting. the man was rushed to a hospital, where he died late last night. in january, we told you about a misunderstanding that an east bay restaurant involving a well-known black comedian who says he was racially profiled when talking to his white wife and her friends. now he has followed up on his promise to engage the community in a discussion about race. last night, kamal bell talked about his experience in a public town hall meeting. nearly 300 people showed up to berkeley to listen to bell, his wife, and other panelists talk about race relations. in january, bell was shooed away

at elmwood cafe while talking to his white wife and several other moms, who also happened to be white. he's pleased this issue is getting the community's attention. >> the problem of race is not something that ends in one night. i'm happy we did this. i'm sure people have different opinions how it went down. we did it need to continue do this this and other things to end racism in the next two weeks. >> bell hopes for similar town hall meeting in the near futurer. this weekend marks three years since the disappearance of teenager sierra lamar. this morning will be the final search for her body. lamar disappeared in morgan hill in 2012 when she was 15. there's no sign of what happened to her. the weekly volunteer searches will come to an end after the morning. a new poster will be introduced and it's meant to remind the community to work together to keep all children safe. a tip line also will remain

active. >> it helps a lot because, yeah, it's not -- we don't have to feel like everything's coming to an end and we don't have anything else and that kind of thing. yeah that helps a lot. >> charged with kidnapping and killing lamar, though her body has never been found. the fbi raided this home in east san jose. what did they find? pirated music and movies. four men were arrested of officers with the recording industry association were there as teams hauled away boxes of evidence. neighbors say the people who lived there were running a black market business for years. more water restrictions could be headed our way. the state water board is set to vote tuesday on whether to enact stricter rules because of the historic drought. the proposal could limit outdoor watering, watering your yard, to only two days a week. restaurants could also be limited to serve water only when

customers specifically ask for it. a violation would carry a fine of up to $500 per time. while many homes and businesses already are taking these measures, water officials say it's not enough. the state is entering its fourth straight drought year. potential restrictions come as we get a new dire prediction about our reservoirs. scientists with nasa says california has a year of water supply left. ground wart's rapidly disappearing as farmers were forced to rely on wells. now there's a call for rationing all water users. officials in napa are trying to track down the source of five cases of hepatitis a. at least two cases are tied to restaurants inside the westton hotel. the one works at hotel's bank cafe and bar. three other residents who are related to one another contract

hepatitis a one week before the hotel cases came to light. the contagious liver disease can only be transmitted through fecal matter, most likely because of incomplete hand washing. the two groups of the virus cases don't seem to be connected but health officials say the cause in both cases is likely contaminated food. >> usually that ends up being a commercial food product, something that's processed, grown, whatever in another place where there is hepatitis a more frequently and distributed wildly. >> this nine-page questionnaire give tonight the five patients may help track down the exact source of the hepatitis a. but the patients will have to remember what they've eaten as far back as january. pg&e facing a steeper fine, stemming from the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion in 2010. pg&e will now pay $1.6 billion, that new amount announced yesterday by the new president of the california public

headed out the door, ahead of a very warm saturday. temperatures in the 70s and 80s across the bay area today. well, talk about sticker shock, gas going for $8 a gallon. this week in sausalito. take a look. bridgeway gas station on thursday, prices have come down a bit but nowhere near bay area averages. so listen to this. while it seems counterintuitive the owner tells us he raises the prices so high because he's tired of hearing customers complain about how expensive gas is. locals say he's been at it for months. >> when all of the prices went down, he doubled his and then when the prices still continued to go down he kept adding more. the more the people complained, he just added another dollar. >> well, believe it or not it's working. the owner tells us he's making a profit, citing enough rich customers and tourists to keep him in business no matter what

you're watching "today in the bay." >> welcome back. we appreciate you joining us. a live look at san jose from communications hill. it's a mild morning out there, if you're headed out the door. but be sure to dress appropriately. it will be a very warm saturday across the bay area. temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s. some bay area girl scouts had quite the surprise customer while selling cookies in downtown los altos. tom hanks was not only a customer, but a salesman. here's "today in the bay's" ian cole. >> reporter: two weeks ago, anushka and her mom were selling girl scout cookies in front of lyndon tree books. >> very slow. >> yeah. >> reporter: slow morning altogether, until they spotted a

recognizable customer. >> he was just walking down the street and i was like, come here, buy girl scout cookies. >> reporter: a familiar face, mom couldn't put a name to. >> i quickly took out my phone and started taking pictures, i'm like, i turnsed it i'm like, is that? she's like, yes. >> reporter: tom hanks. anushka didn't know who he was and focused on getting the sale. >> i was like, another guy, let's sell these cookies. >> reporter: he bought five boxes and displayed them proudly in the picture he took with the girl scouts, a few bystanders wanted their own snapshot and that's when hanks started selling them himself. >> he told another family, you guys can have a picture but only if you buy cookies from these girl scouts. >> reporter: a few boxes here and there, hanks stumbled on the scouts visiting his son truman who goes to stanford. on their way to get truman's typewriter fixes at the los altos business machines down the

street. >> i heard him truman, right over here. >> reporter: hanks is an avid typewriter collector. the store owner says he noticed his fast typing across the room but recognized him when he spoke. >> i knew it was tom hanks, just -- i didn't realize how distinctive his voice was. >> reporter: for the girl scouts, still thrilled they got to meet woody from "toy story," mom met forrest gump. >> i got a picture. >> reporter: they'll remember the nice famous actor who helped their troop get a few more sales. ian cole, nbc bay area news. >> all of that good karma in los altos is paying off in new york city. tom hanks tweeted out, a big thanks to someone named tony. that good samaritan found hanks' credit card on the streets of manhattan. no word how tony managed to track down that superstar. thanks, hanks, he signed it. >> it wasn't me, by the way.

if you're visiting town, a great thing to see. with temperatures in the 70s, embarcadero, a rare treat. rest of the bay area, highs everywhere, going to, move average. 76 in san francisco. 84 for the south bay. peninsula 82. north bay 82. east bay 84. it's going to be warm everywhere today. of course we always talk about the beach when it's warm like this. you know i'm going to talk about it. 73 degrees today in pacifica, light winds. filtered sunshine across the bay today. 76, even at half moon bay. warm spot, without a doubt, santa cruz, up to 78 degrees today. winds perfect, light, to get out on the open seas. just remember, if you're out there, spf today because it's going to be very warm all day long. but i want to break down the science behind why we're so warm. area of high pressure off the coast and that's driving those offshore wins. now, because we have very strong

winds and the upper levels of the atmosphere in our jet stream, the jets travel, why they call it the jet stream, strong winds coming from the ocean. because of that you get a filtered sunshine look you get high pressure at surface and clouds trying to spill over the high pressure. through the day notice what our sky's going to laook like. high pressure starts to make its way out of here. tomorrow another storm system to the north dropping down. the bulk of the rain will stay to the north. we'll see a few showers starting tomorrow morning. futurecast, up in the north bay, start to notice a few light showers up near santa rosa, clearlake, cloverdale, that's it through the evening hours tonight. tomorrow morning, 9:00, 10:00, cold front starts to make its way through. it's going to start to fall apart and weaken quickly. 7:00, 8:00 showers across the north bay and the coastline.

who redefined who he is. here's "today in the bay's" garvin thomas with the "bay area proud." >> that thing is theater. and although steven brown took it up really just a few years ago, it transformed him so dramatically, he couldn't wait to try out his act on others. >> before we start the run-through. >> reporter: when your personal demons threaten to drag you to some dark places. >> go for it. >> reporter: -- bright lights might be your best defense. they were, you see, for steven brown. >> go back to face the window. >> reporter: discovering theater six years ago, steven says, didn't literally save his life. it did, though, save him from the life he was living. >> i saw no future for myself except death or jail or something very, very bad. >> reporter: steven grew up the fourth of seven brown kids.

by the time he was a teenager, though, the shadow created by his older, overachieving siblings had overwhelmed him. depression and obsessive-k obsessive-compulsive disorder paralyzed him. >> all i could do is lie on the couch because just, you know, take me a half hour to walk down the hall. >> reporter: at the urging of a friend, one day when he was 17, steven tried out for a play. the motel tment the curtains pa so did the clouds hovering above him. >> from the moment i walked in, no doubt the right thing. was okay to be shy and awkward and okay to be whoever it was you were and to stand on stage like that and act like that, it was very, very revolutionary for me. >> reporter: such a revelation, steven couldn't wait to share it. he knew there must be other kids

just as lost in this land of plenty as he and couldn't wait for them to experience what he did. >> we're all nervous, right? it happens. >> reporter: which is why at the age of 20, he started his very own theater company. >> a place where there's not going to be bullying or back stabbing or cliques or anything like that. where everybody's working together and supporting each other together. >> reporter: just three years in, the theater is on its seventh show. already close to 150 young people have acted for and learned from steven. the fact that just a few years removed from his darkest times, these kids look to him as a guiding light, amazing steven and his dad. >> he's come a long way. >> reporter: steven realizes that, once he fell in love with theater, he could have aspired to be a great actor.

but some lawmakers want to done faster. twitter has shut down some 2,000 accounts linked to foreign terrorist groups including isis. some estimate thousands more are still active. members of the house foreign affairs committee asked twitter to take action voluntarily. their reserving the right to get tough. >> if those efforts are insufficient, we could hold hearings, that will, again, push twitter in the right direction. and finally, we can look at our tax laws. >> while twitter's expressing reservations about curtailing speech, the law says terrorists don't consider first amendment considerations. a silicon valley tech giant slips up. google admits it exposed private information i a quarter of a million people. but how? scott budman has more on the hack. >> reporter: small businesses like restaurants are the

backbone of our economy. but they just got some bad news. >> it's their contact information that was exposed. >> reporter: if they registered their online presence on google apps, a software glitch likely made their private information public. 280,000 google customers have their private information briefly leaked. giving scammers and identity thieves a window of opportunity. >> i can use, for example, my knowledge of scott's name, perhaps scott's title or maybe his location to actually convince scott that i'm legitimate. >> reporter: trying to scam. >> trying to scam you. >> reporter: the second tech giant to have a software oriented given this week. you may remember unable to shop apple's app wednesday. google identified the cause of the problem, has fixed the leak

you're watching "today in the bay." >> it's 7:40 on saturday morning. a live look outside at san francisco from emeryville. what a beautiful pink sky, ahead of a warm saturday. you can see treasure island off in the distance. port of oakland to the left there. it will be in the 80s across most of the bay area today. if you can believe it. well, when you own the best record in the nba you can enjoy some of the perks that come with. the warriors were able to rest four of their top players last night in denver. the ws took the floor without bog bogut and iguodala. golden state had the lead midway through the fourth but the nuggets went on a late run that put away the warriors' reserves. denver wins, 114-103.

that sinking air and cloud cover trying to get up underneath that, and that's high clouds across the bay, even towards north bay, san francisco, east bay. temperatures are very mile. we're off to a very mild start in the 50s. later on, temperatures back into the 80s for most of us, it will still be in the 70s at the coastline. like san francisco, up to 76. still, 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of year, even in the north bay, 82. east bay close to 80. south bay 84 degrees. we like to tell you about things going on across the bay. in san francisco, one of the smaller neighborhoods down south, well, they have their 17th annual family day today. it's going to be spectacular. they've got car shows. they've got a parade, performances, kids' activities and raffles. temperatures in the low 70s all the way through the afternoon. even by noon, temperatures already at 70. of course, we tell you if you're like me, heed to the beach, right? 73, even if it's cold headed to

the beach. pacifi pacifica, temperatures, half moon bay 76. 78 san ta cruz. our average high for this time, only in the 60s because of an area of high pressure off of our coastline and that's bringing in offshore winds. and then unfortunately a strong area of upper level wind that is making its bay over to the bay area. we can get any rain out of this. a strong onshore push aloft at the surface, high pressure in control. you get a look throughout most of the day. high pressure at surface, that creates sinking. haze across the foothills. and high clouds trying to work up underneath the area of high pressure. this moves out of here tomorrow. that's going to make way for low pressure across the pacific northwest than area of low pressure will stay north for us, it's not going to bring a lot of

rain. as you saw, onshore winds aloft, revved up. tomorrow, onshore wind will mean cooler temperatures and cloud cover and potential for maybe a stray shower. notice futurecast, cloudy skies. it's not until tomorrow morning, about 9:00, 10:00, the cold front makes its way toward the north bay. showers tomorrow through the bay. even at the coastline, i think we'll see showers. but everybody else is going to see a good mix of sun and clouds. cooler temperatures. it won't be overly hot for tomorrow, it will be above average. temperatures back into the mid-70s. onshore wind takes hold of the bay area towards the week. low 70s, though still above average, at least we won't be 20 degrees above average like we will be for today, just about ten. but warm and sunny. >> either way, love it. 20 or 10, i'll take it. thanks. now to a california man who missed out on winning a million

the bay." a young man's dream of becoming a firefighter cut short. now, it's more than a decade later and his family is honoring his memory with a unique

"today in the bay's" joe rosato shows us how they're helping other firefighters. >> reporter: since san francisco's beginnings the waters of ocean beach has drawn visitors looking for escape. the same waters are also famously treacherous. >> may look as though it's -- you can wade or whatever but you've got to be careful because it can pull you out. >> reporter: some 300 san francisco firefighters are trained to respond to water rescue emergencies. >> every day at station 34, we put up the tide chart. we have an understanding of what we're up against. >> reporter: because of lack of funds, members of the aquatic rescue team have always had to buy their own wet suits. >> wet suits are not a one size fits all. members were purchasing their own. >> reporter: a long ocean beach in 2001, 21-year-old peter went for a jog. he'd recently been accepted to san francisco's firefighter academy and was now training. >> he was just running along the

great highway, a four-mile run, it was right at the end of the run he suffered a cardiac arrest. >> reporter: died of an undetected heart ailment. following his death his family would gather at a golf course to remember him. >> we realized we could raise money and do good things. >> reporter: so the family started a foundation to honor peter, raising money through annual golf tournament with much of the funds going to his beloved fire department. >> the fire department aquatic rescue unit needed wet suits. >> reporter: so this week the foundation presented the fire department's aquatic rescue unit with 40 custom-made wet suits. >> very functional. we're going to save lives with this -- these wet suits. >> reporter: the specially designed suits bear the logo but a pair of flags, copied from the irish-italian flag he had tattooed on his chest. >> something we wanted to do for

the department because we knew peter would think it was cool. >> the suits are helpful, too because they help us identify each other as a team. >> reporter: as the family gathered at ocean beach, members of the rescue unit took their new duds for a spin. >> i would think that when they looked out and saw all of those faces, other firefighters, they saw their brother, their son. >> reporter: though he never made it to the fire department it turns out his love for it will leave a warm legacy along the cold waters of ocean beach. >> we can go on rescues and, you know, the thoughts of peter will be in our head. >> today's a great day. >> much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up -- our friends from pets in need are here. we'll introduce you to brody.
