producers said there would be a dramatic conclusion. 71-year-old robert durst is back behind bars arrested in new orleans over the weekend in connection to the december 2000 murder of long time friend susan berman. durst is the subject of the documentary "the jinx." >> did not tell the whole truth. nobody tells the whole truth. >> reporter: the series re-examines three crimes, the disappearance of his wife kathy, a 2001 murder in the texas for which he stood trial and acquitted. >> not guilty. >> reporter: and the murder he was arrested for late saturday. the show's timee aired sunday night hours after news of durst arrest became public. in it durst is confronted with a potentially damming piece of evidence that could tie his hand writing to a note sent by the presumed killer. >> definitely wrote this but i

definitely did not write that. >> reporter: durst goes into a bathroom with his microphone still on. >> you're caught. >> reporter: and begins talking to himself. >> what the hell did i do. killed them all of course. >> reporter: former prosecutor investigated durst in 2000 during the time of berman's murder. >> susan berman was killed because she knew too much about kathleen durst. i believe he murdered her to prevent her from talking to us. >> reporter: kathleen's friend feels closer to justice. >> if he is convicted for the murder of susan, i'll take what i can get. it's more forensic evidence, why not. you only can put him away once. >> reporter: durst estranged brother expressed thanks. we're relieved and grateful to

everyone who assisted in the arrest of robert durst. we hope he will finally be held accountable for all he has done. the land would not confirm connection between new evidence they say they have and revelations in the documentary. we asked a lawyer for durst what he thought of that final installment and said i expected more. he'll plead not guilty in l.a. >> stephanie, thank you so much. lisa bloom has thoughts on this case. good morning. >> good morning. >> let's talk about first of all this confession or what appears to be a confession. before we even get to the substance i think there is a threshold legal question is whether it would be admitted into court. his defense lawyers will argue that it shouldn't be heard by jurors. do they have a good case for that? >> here's what the defense argument will be, that the filmmakers were communicating with law enforcement over a period of two years acting as agents of the state. durst had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the

bathroom, the private of all places. he didn't knowties mic was on. >> if i'm the prosecutor i'm going to argue who has reasonable expectation of privacy in a public restroom. what if there is somebody in the next stall. >> he had experience being hot miked. this had been going on for months if not years. he had a prior problem with the mike being on. >> the substance on the tape it appears he says i killed them all to be a confession, seems very, very damming. what do you do if you are a defense lawyer with a piece of evidence like that? >> a couple of arguments. he has a mental disease or defect because at other points on the tape he is rambling, incoherent. or say he is being sarcastic that oh, what happened, sure, i killed them all. >> let's talk about these letters, the other piece of evidence that was quite remarkable to come out through this documentary. we know that there was a letter sent by the killer to the police

that spells the word beverly wrong. these filmmakers came up with the letter that was known to be sent from durst to the victim in this case, look likes similar hand writing. same misspelling. is that a smoking gun? >> i think that is the most compelling evidence. he has a hard time explaining it. the hand writing analysts say it is a match. i think just to the untrained eye when you look at other letters like the n, it is a dead ringer. i think he has a very hard time explaining that away. >> i know you watched this first trial closely, the one in texas. what do you make of the fact that robert durst's own words appear to perhaps be his own undoing? >> you know, it's amazing that he even sat for these interviews at great length. surely over the advice of his attorneys. people want to confess, they want to talk. detectives know that. essentially that's what's happened here and if he is brought down it's by his own words. >> lisa bloom, quite an

set off an intense manhunt. ron, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. that shooting happened here in front of the ferguson police headquarters. the shots came from that direction from a vehicle about 100 yards away striking a line of officers, a lot of people and protesters in between. at this point it's unclear whether the gunman was shooting at the police officer or someone else. the shots rang out as the protest following the resignation of ferguson's police chief was winding down thursday morning. one officer shot through the shoulder, the other hit in the face. now, prosecutors have charged 20-year-old jeffrey williams said to live near ferguson, with assault, armed criminal acts and firing from a vehicle. felonies punishable with life in prison. was he involved with the protests? >> he had -- yes. >> reporter: many there

demonstrating that an outside agitator was responsible. police called it an ambush. the suspect claims the gun fire was the result of some kind of dispute. and who was the dispute with? >> i hate to be too vague about it but we're not 100% sure there was a dispute. it's possible that there was a dispute, and possible that he was targeting the police officers. >> i ain't going nowhere. >> reporter: the action at police headquarters was intense. >> what you going to do punk. >> reporter: critics and supporters of police face-to-face, the crowd small but full. residents of ferguson and the police still struggling to find common ground. prosecutors say the suspect will face the same charges whether he intended to shoot the the police officers. both are at home resting and expected to recover while the alleged gunman is expected to make his first appearance in court later today. matt. >> ron allen in ferguson, thank

based on comments by the designers and elton john. katy tur has more on this story. katy good morning. >> good morning, carson. quite a back and forth this weekend, now spilling into this morning. dolce and gabbana, who once appeared as a couple on the cover of "vanity fair" talking about wanting a family have gone on to trash surrogates, gay adoption and ivf, calling the children chemical. this is drawing a lot of outrage, most notably from sir elton john. dolce and gabbana has dressed some of the world's top celebrities, from angelina jolie, scarlet joehansson and christian bale but they are under the spotlight after elton john called out the fashion duo for comments they made in an italian fashion magazine "panorama," where they are quoted as saying you're born and have a father and a mother or at least it should be like this.

asking the audience to raise their glasses and toast them. and the ones they too, have lost. that loving gesture resonates with so many of his fans. >> i never will forget i was doing a meet and greet last year. and a 9-year-old boy, his daddy comes up to me in the meet and greet. he goes "we lost our daughter this year and he's not doing well with it." and his dad stepped away and that little boy looked up at me and he goes "how do you get over losing your sibling?" and i never will -- and i got down on a knee and i just started telling him the best way i could to a 9-year-old boy, it's a way to salvage stuff out of all of these losses that our family has dealt with. so you just have to press on as so many people have to do. >> reporter: and so this country star inspired by loss remembers it all. never taking any of it for

good monday morning. it's 8:56. i'm sam brock. breaking news comes to us from the east bay this morning. that's where a big rig just slammed into an oil chain shop in pittsburgh in the middle of a strip mall there. we've received reports of explosions and heavy smoke coming from that area. you can see it right there from that picture.

the smoke billowing upwards. this is all happening on railroad avenue about a mile south of highway 4. crews have already had to call for backup once to battle those flames. at this point, there are no reports of any injuries. we're working on getting more information and video of the crash right now. we hope to bring that to you coming up in our next update in about 30 minutes. for the time being, we'll return you to the "today" show. see you.

headlines after controversial statements made about ivf. in the italian fashion magazine panorama said you are born and you have a father and a mother or it should be like this. that's why i'm not convinced by chemical children synthetic baby, wombs for rent. that's the way they describe ivf. elton john called for a boycott. elton and his partner have two children both born via a surrogate. elton wrote yesterday shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at ivf, a miracle that allowed legions of loving people both straight and gay to fulfill their dream of having children. your thinking is out of step with the times just like your fashion. that's where it hurts. i shall never wear dolce and gabbana ever again. that from mr. elton himself.
