cleared to green, in the spirit of the day i guess. eastbound we have crews going on there for about another half hour. i did see flashing lights. no major slowing. we'll track if the green turns to yellow and red later on in the commute. back to you. >> thank you, mike. students at san jose's leland high school are remembering a classmate this morning who collapsed and died on campus. he collapsed while jogging near the football field yesterday afternoon. his track coach immediately performed cpr on him until paramedics arrived. the student died a short time later at the hospital. the school says he had a history of asthma. >> 4:32 right now. if if you are a 49ers fan it has been a turbulent offseason. now this morning football fans are buzz being the latest player to leave the niners, an up and coming defensive star in the prime of his career stepping away from the game. >> "today in the bay's" rob redell is live at levi's stadium. chris borland says it's not

worth it to play football. >> not from a health and safety perspective, not worth the risk, says chris borland in a surprise announcement yesterday, the 49ers linebacker told espn "outside the lines" he was retiring not only from the 49ers but from professional football because of a concussion he suffered, it happened last season during training camp but he ended up playing through it because he wanted to make the team. he told the network, "i just honestly want to do what's best for my health. from what i've researched and what i've experienced i don't think it's worth the risk." a stanford neurologist says concussions are not to be taken lightly. they can have a serious impact on one's health. >> it's a lot more complicated than that, than just simply walking it off. these are real injuries in the same way you injure a shoulder or have a knee injury. having a brain injury is a real injury and needs to be taken care of properly so that you don't suffer long-term side effects. >> 49ers general manager trent baalke released a statement

of racial profiling. people in the community are stunned that this could happen. >> we are aghast, appalled and very much disappointed. >> these are sustained -- you know, i don't think that maybe police work is the appropriate line of work for somebody who has those views. >> san francisco mayor ed lee has said those four plirz shool officers should be fined if they did send offensive messages. state water officials will spend the day reconsidering or considering new rules for how and when you can use water. the new rules could restrict restaurants from serving tap water unless customers specifically ask for it. some restaurants already do that here in the bay area. others would set tighter restrictions on when you can water your lawn and for how long. a nasa scientist told the "l.a. times" last week that california has only about a year's supply of water left in its reservoirs. 4:35. fast food workers will rally

today protesting what they call safety hazards on the job. they filed dozens of complaints with the u.s. department of labor yesterday. they say burn injuries are rampant on the job and restaurants lack basic first aid or protective gear. at noon, workers will protest in front of mcdonald's on 12th street in oakland. an effort to help the working poor in oakland having a devastating impact on some businesses. voters improved a rate hike from $9 to $12.25. six restaurants and four grocery stores in chinatown had to close down because they couldn't afford to pay their workers that much money. >> from $9 to $12.25 that means annually for a full time employee is about $10,000 which would be including the insurance and workmens corps and everything. >> those who study the issue believe businesses that had to close were financially unstable

to begin with. one city councilman says it's too early to jump to conclusions because the wage hike has only been a fact for two weeks. a shortage of affordable housing a cording to a county report rents for two-bedroom apartments increased more than 50% over the past four years. the county will consider several options, including rent control and relaxing regulations on second units. >> no question, finding affordable housing here difficult, largely because it's so desirable, to live in the bay area. the weather one reason why. >> and that is free today and every day really. christina has our forecast for us. >> for now, anyway, until we get charged more for water. you always want to conserve if you can, every opportunity is a good opportunity, don't waste those, as they come your way. we got this interesting pattern, i know laura pointed out she had a little bit of shower activity on her way to work this morning. the jet stream is right on top of part of the bay area, mostly the south end, so as a result of that, we are going to see a

apple is reportedly in talks to launch an online tv service this fall, it would be a bundle of about 25 channels, anchored by abc, cbs and fox but not nbc due to a fallout between apple and comcast. it would be available across apple tv, iphones, ipads and macs. the service will likely cost $30 to $40 a month. this is an interesting study. office workers may be fed up to their ears in paperwork but they're saying they've had enough. new study by adobe shows an overwhelming majority feel their success and productivity is being slowed down by outdated ways of handling documents. nearly two-thirds say they'd switch to a new job for the sake of less paperwork and more than a quarter believe mundane tasks are getting in the way of advancing their careers. sam and laura, back to you.

business, you would imagine snow maybe in the forecast? let's find out and check in with meteorologist christina loren. good morning to you. >> good morning. the difficulties up there they've got this great snow-making technology but not cold enough to make the snow. we came off of a record weekend. temperatures here in the 90s, up there the mid to upper 60s so very unusual to see that this late in the season. i can tell you right now it's not looking great for snow chances. we'll have more as we head throughout the 5:00 hour together. temperatures mostly in the 50s to start. little bit of shower activity out there and as we head throughout the day today mild yet again in the mid-60s. as of lunch time the biggest difference between yesterday and today is going to be additional sunshine for your st. patrick's day. sun will rise at 7:19, rapid warming on the way between 12:00 and 4:00 and a mild finish to your st. patrick's day evening, a lot happening in the city if you want to avoid the crowd you probably want to avoid downtown san jose. let's get into a little bit of science because as we get closer

to spring, we've got some changes headed your way. our days are going to get longer than our nights and that's always the case, so here's the deal. the's's axis is tilted at an angle 23.5 degrees as it goes around the sun. twice per year on the equinox the earthis perpendicular right angle with the sun so you get that direct sunlight. as a result we have worldwide commonalities. we'll see 12 hours a day and night worldwide northern and southern hemisphere as we get into this friday. so that's what the equinox is all about and then after that, the days will continue to get longer as we get into your summertime months so cool little science there. if you're like me, you only want to get smarter. temperatures in the mid-70s for today, upper 70s by thursday, into friday, the first official day of spring, when we hit that equinox. temperatures will be very spring like but above average, in fact all of these numbers above average getting into the next few days, but still, comfortable. i can tell you we have a chance of showers getting into your

all-important weekend. more coming up. back to you, sam and laura. >> thank you so much, christina. 4:48 right now. the sight of a day-long siege in sydney is set to reopen this week. in december a gunman stormed a cafe and took 17 people hostage. after 16 hours the gunman and officers exchanged gunfire. two hostages and the gunman died. the cafe is set to reopen friday with a memorial plaque on display in honor of the hostages who died. jurors in the boston bombing trial are back in court for more testimony. they left the courthouse yesterday to see the bullet-riddled boat where dzhokhar tsarnaev hid until police caught him. the jurors looked inside the boat with the bloodstained note he wrote denouncing the united states for muslim wars in other countries. durst was set to return for a murder charge but the real estate heir is charged with possessing a firearm.

police charged him in a 000 murder this past week, as it comes as new details of the case were revealed in an hbo documentary series on durst. a utah family talking about the incredible rescue of their baby girl trapped for hours in a submerged vehicle. >> go, go, go! >> that video showing rescuers pulling little willie grosbeck last week. the mother died in the crash. lily spent 14 hours trapped upside down in the car before rescuers were able to get her out. >> definitely the video hearing them talk back to the voice and say we're coming, we're here. it was incredible. >> we were very happy and blessed that part of jenny is still here with us. >> police say they found drugs in a purse inside of the car but have not said what was behind the cause of that crash.
