6:02 am
>> crashing into every car. might have to take lethal force. >> reporter: and that is what happened. one witness told us this morning he heard three to six gunshots last night. this, police say, after the woman drove erratically up and down pine the wrong way, hitting parked cars, before driving up on the sidewalk, trying to run down officers. and that's when they opened fire. another woman describes the. >> the of being caught in the middle of it all. >> the glass was shattered and, you know, guns were just going off everywhere. it scared me. i ran for cover inside my van. i have a catering business. and i hit the floor. >> reporter: the female driver died on scene. her car was towed away around 4:00 this morning. one motorcyclist had to ditch in the middle of the seat. police saying this could have been far worse.

6:06 am
on the playground. john davis is the person who found it after he saw that his dog had it in her mouth. this is the second one in fremont in just two weeks and knowing that kids used the niles elementary school playground even when school is out, that's the reason why john davidson carefully picked it up and called authorities. >> reporter: i cut off the end of the water bottle and scooped the bat up and put it inside the water bottle, and then took it home and taped the bottle up. >> reporter: his dog, a jack russell terrier named raven, did get a rabies booster shot yesterday, but she's now in quarantine for the next 30 days, just in case. another bat found on third street near niles community park just yesterday again is being tested for rabies today. a rabid bat can infect someone even without biting that person. that is to say if you come upon it and you touch it and you get saliva from that rabid bat into a cut or into a mucus membrane like your eyes, you could

watching your students' twitter accounts. both sides have a pretty good argument. monitoring social media in kids is not unusual. this high school pays an outside company to watch for posts that may indicate a student may hurt himself or others. a statement today should give us some kind of indication when it intends to raise interest rates. it's especially news now because the fed habsn't raised rates in nearly ten years. the economy is going along swimmingly. consumer spending, for some reason, americans are not spending as much as economists think they should. it could be because wages haven't risen or it could be because of this. we forget most of the united states until very recently. boston got 106 inches of snow this year.

6:18 am
keeping things native. drought tolerant, acidic, making sure that landscapes are beyond the lawn. >> reporter: how hard is it for the average guy to have a drought resistance or drought tolerant landscape? >> it's within grasp of everyone. you just have to go to your local nursery and speak to a seasoned horticultural specialist and say hey, i don't want a lawn anymore. i want something that's interesting, that i don't want to have to irrigate that often. >> reporter: once these plants are established, how often would you have to water them? >> the key thing is to make sure that your plant material is watered less frequently but deeper. and that way, the roots, the plants, if they water everything every day, the roots stay fairly shallow. that if you water it less
6:19 am
frequently, you'll get a better plant over time. if you have to turn the water off over a week or two, everything should be fine. >> so you're saying if i drink more water, i'll grow taller? >> you could try that. >> reporter: i appreciate it, man. congratulations on your wonderful creation here. this is the 30th sf flower and garden show, it's here at the san mateo county events center. opens its ten-day run through sunday. the idea as you come here, this is a competition for gardeners like rich, but it's also a place for anyone like myself. y >> that's where the phrase a tall drink of water comes from. >> by the way, thank you very much, bob. i tha i drank a lot of water as a kid. >> i must not. >> christina loren joining us now for your microclimate forecast. and you're saying by the end of the week, we might have another chance for showers. >> slight chance, slight chance. but it's a snow pack that we need so desperately to get out
