coming up on "early today," new bizarre details into the investigation of millionaire robert durst and if he was planning to flee the country. then to a brazen terror attack on tourists. a beating sustained by a third year student after a confrontation with police. and then to much lighter fair as the ncaa basketball tournament kicks off this afternoon thursday march 19th. and wads of cash. stephanie gosk is on the story. >> reporter: police believe robert durst was getting ready to run, even though he said he didn't kill susan berman. in houston investigators searched his home for new evidence. nbc news obtained a new warrant. the documents show the heir is worth $100 million. since last year detectives say durst had been with drawing large sums of money from his bank account, most often with daily withdrawals of $90 million42,000. they found $100 bills in envelopes. also found in the room, a loaded gun with four rounds a rubber mask which would cover an individual's head and neck and ups tracking numbers that durst told police were for a shipment of a large sum of cash. the warrant reveals details of at least some of the evidence los angeles police have collected in the murder of susan

berman. as early as 2002 investigators suspected it was probable durst wrote an anonymous letter to police telling them where to find susan berman's daughter. the letter was addressed to police -- there was a letter and the word cadaver was revealed in the hbo series "the jinx." >> i wrote this one, i did not write the cadaver one. >> reporter: last november, according to detectives, two document analysts ids him as the author of the cadaver letter and envelope. among seized from his home two books, "a deadly secret" and "without a trace." >> one of durst's lawyers called handwriting analysis junk. they once identified a different suspect in berman's murder using

a different technique. this morning, durst is in a mental health facility, law enforcement say he's a suicide risk. tonight, the long strange journey to uncover the truth. don't miss it here at 8:00, 7:00 central on nbc. a shooting in north africa killed tourists. they opened fire outside tunisia. the attack killed 17 tourists several from japan and italy, two from colombia spain, one each from australia, poland and france. almost 50 others injured in the attack. most of them were tourists as well. tunisian forces killed two gunmen. it's unclear if others maybe at large. president obama and caroline kennedy, u.s. ambassador to japan, took a moment to remember them this morning. >> our hearts go out to the loved ones of those who were lost here in japan and around the world. they are very much in our thoughts and prayers today.

>> an estimated 3,000 tunisians have joined isis in syria and iraq. that's more than any other country. this was the deadliest attack on civilians in the north african country in years. police searching for a motive, 41-year-old man accused of killing one man and wounding five others. human rights activists have described him as a neo-nazi with a long prison record. authorities believe the rampage began with hotel shooting carjacking and home invasion. it ended with his arrest at an apartment complex. police spotted him on a balcony and took him into custody. the scoot he's wearing is usually used on suspects whose clothing have been taken so authorities can collect forensic evidence. a big hit in the war on terror. the pinks confirms al shabab adan garrar was killed by a u.s. drone. he was taken out in somalia by

missiles that hit his vehicle a week ago. garar is behind this. the 2013 attack at the westgate mall in nairobi, kenya. 67 people were killed and almost 200 were injured. it seems another canal has erupted at the university of virginia. a student at uva sustained injuries held down by virginia alcohol beverage and control officers early yesterday morning. >> i go to uva. how did this happen? >> johnson was arrested in front of an off campus bar in charlottesville, virginia after he was denied entry. the honor student charged with public swearing intoxication in public and obstruction of justice without force. he has no prior criminal history. a facebook post by uva's black student alliance said in part after martese was denied entry to the bar, he found himself

using sprinklers to deter the homeless from seeking shelter there. san francisco archdiocese said they installed sprinklers at st. mary's cathedral two years ago to detour the homeless and keep clean. now that it's publicized bishop has backtracked saying the aim was never to douse people. >> we're sorry that our intendings have been misunderstood and recognize the method was ill conceived. it actually has had an opposite effect from what it was intended to do. for that we are very sorry and apologize. >> turns out the church never got a permit to install the sprinklers but it did get a permit to dismantle them. it is almost spring. but in parts of the country you still wouldn't know it. meteorologist bill karins here with an update on our weather. bill. >> friday is spring officially. it doesn't mean it will feel like it everywhere.
