overnight demanding justice for what they say was of the rough arrest of a student there. willie is here with the latest on it, good morning to you. good morning, guys. this happened near the charlottesville campus of uva. that student needed ten stitches to his head and now the governor wants virginia state police to take a very close look at what happened. >> he's bleeding. his head is bleeding. >> reporter: this video objecttained by student newspaper "the cavalier daily" shows officers with the state's department of alcohol, beverage control arresting university of of virginia student martese johnson outside an irish pub early wednesday morning. >> uva, i go to uva. i go to uva [ bleep ]. >> reporter: johnson is seen on the ground yelling as officers handcuff him. >> i go to uva you [ bleep ] racists. >> stop fighting. >> reporter: the abc officers say 20-year-old johnson, a he member of uva's honor committee was detained after being refused

entry to the bar, charging him on two counts, obstruction of justice without force and public swearing or intoxication. the virginia department of abc saying in a statement a determination was made by the agents to further he detain the individual he based on their observations and further questioning. in the course of an arrest being made, the arrested individual sustained injuries. >> thank god martese is able to stand here today. >> reporter: overnight about 1,000 students gathered on uva's campus demanding justice for johnson. in a protest that was mostly peaceful with a few isolated incidents. >> get out of the street. >> reporter: johnson, who received ten stitches following his arrest, spoke at the event. >> we deserve to respect each other especially in times like this. thank you. >> reporter: the department of alcoholic beverage control says it will assist in this investigation, and the two agents involved currently are being restricted, guys, to administrative duties this morning. >> those pictures say a lot, willie.

thank you very much. meantime with robert durst now on suicide watch awaiting extradition to los angeles, the investigation is now shedding some new light on his arrest for murder. nbc's stephanie gosk is in new orleans for us once again. stephanie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. police believe that durst is worth an estimated ed$100 million and in the months leading up to his arrest, he was withdrawing large sums of money. by the time they caught up with him here at a hoe it tell in new orleans, they think he was getting ready to run. days before his arrest robert durst used a fake i.d. to check into this new orleans marriott. when poelice searched his hotel room they found more than $40,000 in cash, a loaded revolver, and a rubber mask. those details are revealed in a search warrant executed three days later at durst's home in hughes be ton. in it police say they believe their search will provide evidence of preparations to flee from law enforcement to avoid

apprehension. berman serve edd as a spokesperson for her millionaire friend when he was being questioned about the 1982 disappearance of his first wife, kathy. 18 years later berman was gunned down in her los angeles home. just as she was scheduled to talk to new york authorities about the newly reopened cold case. >> i can easily see writing that letter. >> reporter: in the recent hbo documentary "the jinx" producers confronted durst about the letter he wrote to berman. >> did you write the cadaver note? >> i didn't write the cadaver note. >> reporter: challenging him between it and an anonymous letter to poelice telling them where to find berman's body. >> can you tell me which one you didn't write? >> no. >> reporter: but as early as 2003 handwriting analysts concluded it is probable that durst was the author of the cadaver letter. and in 2014 two other document analysts went even further identifying durst as the author of the cadaver letter and envelope.

but a legal expert says that it will be hard for prosecutors to definitively connect durst to berman's murder. >> absolutely the only thing they can really do for certain is place him in the state of california. it's an awfully big state. >> reporter: when police and fbi raided durst's home, they found two books about him including a deadly secret which claims durst is a serial killer. >> the fact he kept it with him all these years struck a cord. >> reporter: durst denies all the charges but today remains behind bars. the lead defender for durst is calling handwriting analysis junk science pointing out investigators in l.a. had once identified a totally different suspect in the berman murder when they used it. meanwhile, investigators close to the case are talking to nbc news saying that police in both new york and l.a. are asking cities where durst may have lived or worked to look at their missing person's list and try to see if there are any connections

between their old cases and robert durst himself. is a van savannah, matt? >> stephanie, thanks. so many forensic and legal twists and turns in this one. >> right. which leads us to lisa bloom, "today"'s" legal analyst. i'll start with the fact robert durst is on suicide watch, as we understand it, in this jail yet his own defense lawyer tells "the washington post" he's in good spirits and he talked to him. what do you make of that? >> right. and his defense attorney has said publicly he does not think that he's legally insane, which is very interesting because it seems like perhaps he's setting himself up for an insanity defense and anybody who watched "the jinx" as i did has to conclude the guy may have some mental ib use.ssues. >> the legal document required to search his houston home has a lot of revelations. according to police he had a fake i.d., a gun, $42,000 in cash and a latex mask when he was arrested. is that the kind of evidence that ultimately could come into trial perhaps to he show consciousness of guilt?

>> absolutely. and it will also play into his bail hearing because all of that adds up to somebody who sure looks like he was about to flee. and somebody who has been a fugitive in the past, who has worn disguises, who has used cash to get around to evade the law. i think that will be the argument. >> another interesting wrinkle according to the search warrant affidavit, he had three books in his possession at the time of his arrest. all about the disappearance of his former wife, kathy durst. what do you make of that one? >> well, i think he wants to know what the arguments are against hem and the books put all that have together very clearly. and when you watch "the jinx" again, you can see he was kind of ready for the handwriting issue. by the way, in california handwriting analysis is accepted. it's controversial nationwide, but here the supreme court has said it is admissible and it's been used many, many times. >> very quickly, lisa, you watch a television show, that's one thing. a court of law it's totally different. do you still consider this case

to be an uphill battle for prosecutors? >> oh, it sure is, savannah. he has the best legal team money can buy. he's already beaten one murder rap with the same legal team. he can afford the best experts, the best jury consultants, and they're going to pore over everything. in this police report that's just released there's this ib you where the police already said somebody else's handwriting matched the killer's letter. then they had to repudiate that and say, no, actually it's robert durst. i think the defense will make a lot out of that. >> we've heard already they are doing just that. lisa, thank you so much. by the way, so many people fascinated by this case. an all new "dateline" tonight will dig into it at 8:00. a massive man hunt is under way this morning for a group of alleged accomplices in the deadly terror attack at a museum in tunisia. nbc's katie tour is following that investigation. ta t

can katy, good morning to you. >> reporter: four people have been arrested and the number of dead have gone up as well. 25 people in total that includes two gunmen. the rest of them mostly tourists who were just visiting the popular european vacation spot. as night fell over tunisia's cap capital city of tunis, its people stood in defiance of the terror that was intended to intimidate them. officials now say 23 people, three tune esisians and 20 tourists were killed as gunmen stormed the popular barto museum. figureses said -- officials said they hunted some down as they tried to hide. others were held hostage. as police prepared to confront the gunmen, a few managed to escape clutching children as they ran. tunisia's prime minister vowed his country will not succumb to extremism. speaking in japan, home to at least three of the dead, mi

michelle obama offered condolences. >> our hearts go out to the loved ones of those who were lost here in japan and around the world. >> reporter: tunisia has been called a glim earpmer of light, it's where the arab spring started in 2011. but experts worry this attack aimed at disrupting vital tourism will only tempt those in power to turn back more authoritarian measures to keep control. again, 23 people dead, most of them tourists. no one has yet taken responsibility but 3,000 tunisians are believed to have joined isis. that's the most from any one country. and the big question is right now, guys, will will tourists still feel comfortable going there? >> all right. a question that can't be answered for a while, katy tur, thank you very much. questions are mounting for the alleged drunken crash at the white house with two senior agents and the agency's director

will face tough questions about that and more on capitol hill today. nbc's kristen welker is on the story for us interest the white house. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. director clancy will testify about his agency's bugt but indget but in his strongest terms yet he will emphasize there was never a crash but rather the agents nudged a barrier at a low rate of speed, a plastic barrier. all of this as lawmakers are he can pressing serious concerns about the director's handling of the incident and the surveillance tape that recorded it. as secret certificateservice director joseph clancy prepares to face lawmakers today, there is fresh outrage. a congressman says the two is your veilance tapes he viewed this week do not clearly show what happened the night of march 4 when two secret service agents allegedly drove onto the white house grounds and interrupted an active bomb investigation. >> are there other cameras? the director said he wasn't sure they had these tapes, that they

may have been erased. erase erased? are you kidding me? >> reporter: chaf its chairs the committee said it's unclear whether other cameras captured more angles and noted director clancy said per protocol most tapes get erased after 72 hours. >> it's more than a week after the incident and the secret certificateservice director doesn't even know if there's a tape of the incident. that's just so inexcusable. >> reporter: this comes after clancy faced a fierce grilling earlier this week when he acknowledged he wasn't told about the incident for five days and that he was informed by an anonymous source. >> i'm frustrated. i'm very frustrated. >> you can't run an agency like this, or any other agency, unless you have discipline in the ranks. >> maybe some people need to be september to the mojave desert. >> reporter: clancy was brought in to reform the agency after a series of security breaches

weather advisories for much of the northeast. here is how we time it out. we're looking at wet snow tomorrow morning, washington, d.c., parts of the delmarva peninsula, minor snow accumulations about but it picks up as the morning wears on. new york city, mid to late morning. if you have a flight, you might want to early it up because otherwise you're going to get stuck. a period of heavy, wet snow for about six hours around noontime going into the evening hours and boston you start to he see snow later in the day. snow starts at 6:45. minor accumulations expected and then it all draws to a close saturday. how much are we talking about? generally about 1-3 inches. central pennsylvania may pick up 3-5. and from toms river, bridgeport and into islip we could be looking here in new york city and those areas about 3-5 inches. the good news is it's mostly going to be on grassy surfaces because we have a higher angle of the sun, the roadways and sidewalks are a lot warmer. so not a lot of accumulation.

and then colder air comes in on sunday. >> looking for that silver lining on the grass. we have tamron in for natalie this week. you have news about the killing of a terror suspect. good morning. good morning, everyone. the pentagon confirmed wednesday that a u.s. air strike last week killed a senior member of the al shabab extremist group that allegedly helped plan the mall attacks in nairobi, kenya, that killed 67 people. the death was described as another significant blow to the al shabab organization in somalia. u.s. ambassador caroline kennedy appeared in public for the first time today since it was revealed that she was the target of a death threat last month. kennedy appeared at an event in tokyo with first lady michelle obama to promote girls' education. mrs. obama announced a new partnership between japan and the u.s. to help the 62 million girls who are not in school across the globe. she said failure to provide education to them is a waste of human potential. meantime, president obama's

floating the idea of making it mandatory to vote in the united states. during a discussion of voting rights and campaign finance in cleveland, the president said the u.s. should be making it easier to vote not harder. he says if everyone voted, it would completely change the political map. two members of the band one direction will have to post bond worth nearly $5,000 before their performance this this weekend in the philippines. if they don't fork over the money, they won't be able to take the stage. so the controversy centers around a video that circulated on the internet of the two supposedly smoking marijuana. now the bond money will be forfeited if they are caught using or promoting illegal drugs while in manila. and a daredevil motorcyclist who taunted police during an hour long chase is behind bars this morning. so it happened east of los angeles. the man was wanted for reckless driving. he reached speeds, get this,

guys, of over 100 miles per hour be and ran several red lights during the chase. but the most memorable moment came when the suspect stood on the seat of the bike while it was still moving. at one point he parked in a cul-de-sac and took off his helmet to put in his ear buds. eventually he pulled into a gas station and gave himself up. i think he's auditioning for some movie or stunt man. >> he put his ear buds in because the sirens were bothering him? >> or maybe he was trying to track the police chase of him. that's what i was trying to figure out. >> do they make movies in jail? >> he's not going to like wednesday. >> look it up, folks. >> google it. tamron, thank you. hi, al. we have a lot of rain to talk about down in the south coast into the southwest, wet weather in the northern florida. some showers in the pacific northwest. plenty of sunshine through the plains and warmer weather there. going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

and that's your latest weather. >> all right, al. carson is in the orange room. >> good morning. >> something really interesting tamron said, the president floating this idea of whether voting should be mandatory. >> and there's a lot to say on it as you can imagine. as tammron mentioned, president obama spoke to a group in cleveland about the importance of middle class economics. he was asked how he can offset the influence of campaign money in politics and still improve the country's low voter turnout. his response has a the lot of people including us, talking this morning. take a look.australia and other countries it's mandatory. it would be transformative if everybody voted. that would counteract money more than anything. >> soap the president went on to say people who don't vote tend to be young, of lower income and part of minority groups. those are the people we should try to get to the polls. less than 37% of eligible voters voted in the last midterm election.

criminal charges. officially the local chapter is staying quiet. but in an interview with "philadelphia magazine" one unnamed member says the criticism of the two secret facebook pages where police say fraternity brothers posted naked pictures of female students is unfair. it wasn't intended to demean anyone. some is raunchy stuff as you would expect from a bunch of college aged guys. >> his main message to me was that the media has blown this this out of proportion. >> reporter: police say more than 100 people had access to these invitation only facebook pages, but now investigators are looking close lyly to see who may have been responsible for posting that offensive material. >> this type of victimization against women is very it demeaning. it shouldn't occur. >> reporter: kappa delta rose national headquarters says it has suspended the chapter for one year. one of many fraternities finding themselves in the national spotlight. after a video from the university of oklahoma went viral sygma alpha epsilon has

been in. >> as the vast majority do things the right way. >> reporter: back at penn state -- >> so upsetting. what's more upsetting is how it doesn't surprise me. >> reporter: some students say this behavior is part of college culture. >> they just got caught. i'm sure other fromaternities are doing it in other places and party and groups that do similar things but haven't been caught yet. >> reporter: for "today" gabe gutierrez, nbc news, state college, pennsylvania. >> obviously it's all opened up a huge discussion about fraternities and sororities on campus and actually one of our colleagues tom brokaw weighed in on this saying i was briefly a fraternity member in college and still have friends in that chapter. i've comp to the conclusion, tom speaking, fraternity have to be rekonconstituted. there is too much alcohol and sexual abuse, too much animal house behavior.

>> he makes a good point. he's saying fraternities have to look inward, say what are we really about? he makes an interesting point about the military. those who can't afford to go to college now are in uniform. they're in harm's way in afghanistan and iraq and they're privileged on campus should keep that in mind every day and much weekend. that's a good point. >> it's a conversation too, for sorority. you mentioned why do you want to be a part of a group that puts you through such torture to be a member. so it extends past fraternities though they're in the headlines. two conversations on sorority as well. >> there are a the lot of fraternity and sororities doing good things and taking care of business. there's no real segue here. if you love watching those cooking shows on tv and i really do consider yourself warned. there is a new study that suggest tuning in might make you want to eat are more. it could be a recipe for weight gain. kerry sanders is at the culinary institute. where else?

is this really true? >> reporter: well, good morning. if you think it through, maybe. think of this. i might fit this category, americans are cooking will less and less. but we're watching people cook on television more and are more. these shows have become wildly popular and i had think if you connect the dots it makes sense and something we should be aware of that if you watch these cooking shows, it may add to your waistline. >> it's sweet, creamy delightful. >> a nice sweet flavor to it. >> reporter: it's suddenly become a weighty question for foodies. does watching cooking shows put on pounds? it turns out according to a new study it is a recipe for weight gain. >> girls like pub food too. >> reporter: the more food shows watched, the more weight fwan. and if the tv recipes were then prepared even more weight gain.

these suggest the reason is viewers tend to believe that the fattening recipes they say over and over again on tv are normal and healthy. >> why didn't i think of that myself? >> reporter: kim regularly watches cooking shows. she doesn't always cook what she sees but it tips her scales anyway. >> anytime i'm watching a show i'm starving. it makes me hungry. at a commercial break we run to the kitchen and grab something to eat. >> there's no reason to put chicken fat on anything. >> reporter: this host gave up his successful new york restaurant trade to now teach the craft in ft. lauderdale. >> there we go. >> reporter: as a one-time tv show himself he said cooking shows are more about personality and ratings than counting calories. >> if you cook the way they do on television, yes, they will gain weight. >> reporter: the study calls those who watch cooking shows viewers. those who watch and then actually c they call those viewers. those who watch and cook the recipes, doers. on average, viewers weighed 153
