to leave scientology and speak to the filmmakers. it called the interview subject admitted liars and professional anti-scientologists who are "regurgitating their stale, discredited allegations." they accuse the filmmakers of having a vendetta. well's let more on this. marty is a former employee of the church of scientology. you were a member of this church for years and years and years. why are you speaking out now? >> well i started speaking out six years ago and the reason why i spoke out was, i escaped from scientology in 2004 literally because i had been sentenced to a prison camp that had been set up at its headquarters. scientology is very good at making you feel responsible and making you feel degraded. when i left for four years i tried to create a life thinking to myself in the back of my mind that somehow i'm responsible for
7:44 am
how everything degenerated there. well five people followed my lead and subsequently escaped and tracked me down in texas and shared with me that what i had experienced that led to me escaping and leaving continued on. this prison camp. it got more atrocious, it got more -- the conditions got worse and it continued on for four years. >> when you say the prison camp is this the thing you talked about in the documentary that some people called "the hole"? >> yes. >> i should mention, the church says the hole doesn't exist, that you are a liar that you have perjured yourself in the past. the list of allegations against you goes on and on and on. so they deny this flat-out. what do you say happened in this so-called prison camp? >> it is not just i. there is five other witnesses who were actually in the hole and continued to be for years after i had left. but it was a small office where 80 people who were the top level managers of scientology were kept 24/7.
7:45 am
they had to participate in group confessions all day long with a person standing in front of the group just like in communist china and having to express their evil intentions towards the leaders of scientology. i did, too, i did it from the beginning -- we engaged in violent acts against one another if the confessions weren't to the likes of the leaders. >> you were a member and employee of this church. you have acknowledged you say that you did quite a few things on beof hahalf of the church you say, such as harassing or even engaging in some physical conduct against others. what did you do? >> well i helped build this office of special affairs which is their intelligence and dirty tricks arm. i will say that during our time period there had been -- i had come in when -- shortly after there had been indictments after the founder's wife and 11 other top members. i was 21 years old. one of my first assignments was to re-configure this whole
7:46 am
defense network of scientology, and i did that. >> by the way, they say you were a low-level employee. >> yeah right. okay. they say a lot of things. they'll say whatever they need to say to sort of try to discredit truth. but the fact of the matter is be with i helped to construct that monster that now is pursuing me and other people that stood against them. but it is designed to shudder people into silence. those are the just words, that's the policy of the office of special affairs, to create this effect that shudders people into silence. that's the kick-back that this documentary goes against. >> let me ask you about this allegation in the documentary that you make that you wiretap wiretapped nicole kidman as she was getting divorced from tom cruise something again the church vehemently denies. did you do that? did you yourself wiretap her phone? >> no. i ordered that it happen. on the order of someone else. >> didn't you know that that was illegal? >> yes. >> do you have any evidence to
7:47 am
corroborate it? they say there's nothing that substantiates what you claim. >> yeah well when i said it and they complained that it's something that is new that i came up with. well it's because the filmmaker who did the film asked what blackmail do they have on tom cruise. i thought about it should i talk about this. i realized when i finally became free of scientology, is after they attacked me publicly for six years and used every confession i ever did all the way back to my birth. they attacked my mother. they attacked my grandfather. who i only met twice in my entire life. the filmmaker's father has been attacked. that's the reason he doesn't like scientology. but i realized that i only became free when i took all that and they got everything that i ever did out there. okay? and i realized blackmail is no longer powerful when the truth is told.
7:48 am
so i decided to tell the truth about what happened with tom cruise and nicole kidman and so it really is an act of kindness and compassion towards tom cruise because he should feel relieved of that burden of blackmail. >> we're out of time. i should mention that's another allegation the church makes that this is only recently something that's come up. marty, appreciate you being here and sharing your perspective.
