the co-pilot or the first officer of this flight deliberately crashed it into the mountains. decided to take his own lavs and the lives of 149 other people. >> this was revealed by a friendench prosecutor at he said the co-pilot want to, quote, destroy the plane. >> he is identified as andreas lubitz from germany. the ceo of his airline's parent company is telling reporters that at this point there is no indication what the motive would have been. >> we're hearing from friends of the three americans who died aboard that plane. we'll talk to tom costello and former ntsb investigator greg fiton a moment. we want to start at the crash site. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. it is chilling to hear the ceo of the airline describing himself, as we speak, as speechless. our worst nightmares we couldn't imagine something like this
7:03 am
an a-320 flown into the mountains here. the urgent focus had this morning on the co-pilot, andreas lubitz and what would have caused him to do this purposely. the co-pilot deliberately pushed the button and triggered the plane to go down, he told a the badly damaged cockpit voice recorder indicated first the cockpit door opened and closed a violent knocking was heard, and the pilot was trying to get back in. lubifz was breathing and conscious to the end. the passengers with were likely not aware of the perilou impact, he said. we could hear the cries minutes before the plane crashed. they are making inquiries about the co-pilot's personal

situation but have ruled out terrorism. as the victims' families are being flown to the crash area we know more about how the tragedy hear has touched american families. emily and her mother from virginia were killed on cnn friends remembered them as selfless and loving. >> two amazing, loving people who left behind friends and family who love and miss them a lot. . >> reporter: emily studied the maas music strip at drexel university. she cared deeply for all those in her life. the state department has confirmed that a third american was killed in the crash. the spokesperson jen ps isaki say they are not releasing the names but they have been in be contact with the family. >> wat to gain access to the cockpit. let's bring in be in's own tom costello who covers aviation.
7:05 am
tom, i want to begin with you. this happened at 38,000 feet. the pilot used the restroom and the first officer locked the door and began the descent. is this an act of opportunity? >> the german authorities there, lufthansa, have given us more. the procedure is for a flight attendant to go in and kind of stand inside the cockpit, stand guard to ensure that the pielot who is flying the pl have the a medical emergency a let the pilot back in. that does not have in germany. luft policy. the pilot rings a doorbell and it's up to the pilot inside to look on a closed circuit television monitor to say, yes, that's the captain. i'm going to let him in and open the door. but in this case the co-pilot didn't let the captain back in.
7:06 am
there's an emergency code that the captain can type in if he wants to get back in, assuming that, for example, he he leaves and someone inside has had a heart attack, but that can be overridden by the person inside deliberate act. the co-pilot overriding the captain who was trying to get into the cockpit. the other point here, i'm not so sure that i agree with frenc was happening. if you have the captain banging on the door as apparently was the case and screaming and shouting to get in and the pla is descending i ha quite a few pass jess may have been aware something wasn' >> and, tom, it's amazing the first officer said nothing, said nothing to the pilot who was trying it to gain access to the cockpit and nothing to the ground controls who are trying to reach him. all they heard on that congressckpit voice re his normal breathing. >> french prosecutors are very sure he was not, hem selfimself, having a me sounde but he was overriding that
7:07 am
switch, not allowing the captain in. there's a five-minute break. if somebody doesn't override the switch over that five-minute period, then the door will unlock if you type in the right code. that did not happen. this was an effort to keep the cap captain out >> let's bring greg in. this isn't unusual for the time of the flight, the plane levels off to its cruising alat this institute and the pilot gets up to use the restroom. it happens >> absolutely, matt. and then that's why it sounded so normal up until then the descent happened. now that we have this new information, that will be a concern for world aviation. weigh build these four to five doors, we have these security protocols in place. as we talked about even a year ago with mh-370 just because we do something here in the united states as far as security, having a fligh cockpit blocking the aisle, if you will, the rest of the world doesn't necessarily operate the
7:08 am
same way we do. that's why i was surprised lufthansa didn't have that same pro-tocol. they left the pilot alone in the cockpit, and now we have a new issue. we've fortified the doors to prevent people from getting into the cockpit. now we hav transpiring in the cockpit and we can't get there to remedy it. >> and yet the airline rea has no way of knowing. he hadn't been in the air that long, 630 hours of flying time, 100-plus hours on this aircraft. but i was looking through his record. it looked pretty solid, greg. >> yes, and that's a concern, matt. you can only do so many psychological testing for pilots. they do that normally during an initial employment screen. they'll do psychological testing and that kind of stuff. they do some of that. i know that the ceo of lufthansa said that they don't have a specific protocol during medicals but every ame, every medical doctor i go to for my pilot certificate and medical, they will talk to you, see w your state o like that.
7:09 am
i have a feeling protocols will change worldwide especially after this event. >> greg feith, tom koss it tell low, guys, thank you bot again, a deliberate act on the part of the first officer of this aircraft crashing that plane into the french alps. we'll have more on the investigation throughout the morning. another big story we're following close at home. a deadly and destructive tornadoe the. at least one person died in oklahoma where emergency crews have been busy throughout th night. gabe gutierrez is west of tulsa. >> reporter: this this used to be a doughnut shop. not anymore. powerful winds sliced through this area last night. tens of thousands of people in oklahoma are still without power, and this morning emergency crews are out assessing the damage. >> oh, dear lord. >> reporter: terrifying moments wednesday night as storm chasers captured this tornado on camera

7:15 am
should spend time in a military brig? >> if it were a severe setting, where he abandoned his post and put other members of the military at risk, then, of course, a prison term is something that has to be contemplated. >> let me ask you about the decision that the president made to trade five taliban prisoners for bowe bergdahl. it was controversial. the president presumably knew the circumstances of bowe bergdahl leaving his post. he said, though, leave no soldier on the battlefield. if that had been you in the oval office, would you have made that same call? >> there are two conflicting principles at play here. one is leave no one behind. the other is don't negotiate with terrorists. in a setting like this, congress said you must have the president go to congress. he didn't do that, he violate again the law. but number two the real question for me is, do the people being released represent a threat to american lives in the future. in this case i believe they do. as a result i was critical at the time of the exchange and continue to be critical.

it is 8:00 here on "today." it's thursday march 26th, 2015. and we come on with very disturbing news out of france on tuesday's deadly crash of that passenger jet in the alps. >> at a press conference just moments ago, investigators said that the co-pilot of that plane was left alone in the cockpit, then locked the door and refused to let the pilot of the plane back in when that pilot allegedly or apparently went out to use the restroom. and then without saying a word the co-pilot deliberately brought that a320 airbus with 150 people on board down into the mountains of the french alps. nbc's tom costello covers aviation. tom, this is incredibly disturbing and it raises so many questions, although it does
8:01 am
answer a lot of questions as well. >> reporter: well it's now a mass murder investigation. it's just stunning how in the course -- over the course of 48 hours, this has now gone from a big aviation mystery, and we all thought we were possibly looking at a decompression event that would have brought this plane from 38,000 feet down to 6,000 and then slamming into a mountain without any communication with air traffic controllers. and now a very forthright french prosecutor coming out and saying in fact that this 28-year-old co-pilot by the name of andreas lubitz who had no known links to terrorism and who had obtained a glider's pilot's license as a teenager and had about 630 hours of flying time that he wanted to destroy this plane. and that he had a normal conversation it would appear with the captain when they were taking off from barcelona. but then once they got to cruising altitude that 38,000 apparently the captain said he needed to use the restroom. he got up left the cockpit. the door was closed. he used the lav and then was not
8:02 am
able to get back in. he began knocking on the door and the co-pilot wouldn't let him in. no communication inside. no voices inside the cockpit. but the cockpit voice recorder does pick up the pilot then banging on the door and then screaming on the door and then picking up the intercom and trying to get his attention. no response whatsoever. but they do hear normal breathing which suggests there was not a medical issue. and it is possible from inside that cockpit to override the lock. in other words, that external keypad that you see pilots punching in a number to get into the cockpit, you can override that and lock somebody out. and it appears that may have been what has happened. and so this 28-year-old then taking this plane down from 38,000 down into a mountain at a very deliberate pace. and the prosecutor also announcing that in the final moments on the cockpit voice recorder you can hear screaming, presumably screaming from the passengers who have witnessed the captain trying to get into the cockpit and then
8:03 am
witnessed this plane descending further and further and further. and they must have known how it was going to end. just a terrifying, terrifying situation. there is this however, and that is that this airbus a320 apparently performed as it always has, a very good airplane. this is not now, we know a problem with an airbus that they are now worried about the whole fleet. not at all. this is a murder investigation involving the co-pilot. >> a mass murder as you say, tom. stand by there. we can continue to talk to but we also want to bring in former ntsb investigator greg feith. i want to get your take on what we've heard from that french prosecutor and how it is that this is something that could happen in 2015 where we don't have protocols in which you can't have one person who has the will, also have the opportunity to bring down a plane with 150 people on board. >> we're looking at a whole new
8:04 am
aviation realm. after 9/11 we tried to secure the cockpit from people breaching it from the outside. so we fortified, the doors, we put in protocols. we have all of these standards. now, unfortunately, it's starting to gravitate into the pilot community. and this is a real concern now for the world aviation community because we have people that are trained as pilots who have immediate access and they are on the locked side of the door. that is they are protected now from interference from anybody trying to stop them. and that's going to be a real concern. that's why i was very surprised that the first day of this event, they had already ruled out terrorism. and they didn't have any information. so having talked on your air about this two days ago, i was really surprised that they had already ruled it out. i wouldn't have ruled it out as an investigator until we got to this point. and of course now it's obvious that -- whether you call this terrorism, an intentional act, a murder a crime, whatever the fact is is that there was an
8:05 am
intent there to do harm to the aircraft and, of course the unfortunate folks on that airplane. >> and greg let's just mentioned protocol here in the united states that the rules and regulations here in the united states state that when a pilot leaves the cockpit for whatever reason a member of the flight crew a flight attendant, goes in and stands in the cockpit with the remaining pilot, so there will always be two people in the cockpit. one reason to allow the pilot back in the door. but i just -- i would imagine another reason in case something terrible happens to that pilot remaining, you've got someone who can alert the rest of the crew. >> exactly. and that's the protocol that we've put into our u.s. air carriers but that isn't dictated around the rest of the world. we talked about this in mh370 about what we do here in the united states or the western world or specific areas of the world. but the rest of the world doesn't always go along with what we do here in the united states. we don't know what lufthansa's
8:06 am
protocol is especially for germanwings. it's apparent that there wasn't a flight attendant or somebody else in that cockpit for that very reason. was that a breach of protocol or was that complacency, or do they just not do it because they don't worry about it? so that is an issue that not only accident investigators want to see but, of course now the prosecutors and the crime investigation folks. >> we still don't know why this guy, andreas lubitz 28 years old, did this. there are some acquaintances. this happens quickly in the days of the internet where a name goes up online and people who say they know that person start weighing in. one acquaintance said that lubitz showed no signs of depression when they last saw him last fall as he renewed his glider's pilot's license. he was happy he had the job with germanwings and was doing well said a member of the glider club where he was a member. so we still don't know why this co-pilot would have deliberately destroyed this aircraft. >> here's my concern.
8:07 am
not only from an accident investigation standpoint but a security standpoint now in the aviation community, and that is that with all of the terroristic threats that have been made over the last several years, especially in the recent past where they're trying to infiltrate and integrate into our society, quote, look normal now do we have to worry about them looking normal in the realm of aviation and especially as an airline pilot who now has immediate access. so no longer are you going to have the bad guys sitting behind the cockpit door but they're actually in the cockpit now with easy access and able to commandeer the airplane. this young man, for whatever reason had an intent. now, how long it's been going on is a real question. i can't imagine he just showed up that day and decided to do that. there had to be some planning here. and that's what the investigators are really going to have to look at that is the crime investigators, and try and trace this back to an origin and
8:08 am
see what's going on because that i think, is going to be the biggest scare for the aviation industry is can this continue to happen. and how do we stop it? how do we run trap lines? how do we create filters to try and identify the potential for this happening again? and i think that's going to be the biggest challenge now out of an accident or an event like this. and of course mh370 and possibly others. >> and let me turn to tom costello on that very point because whatever the motive whether this was motivated by his desire to kill himself or whether he wanted to murder 149 other people either way, that is what happened here. and tom, we talked earlier about what vetting process pilots go through, either by the airlines or the faa. and is it only at the outset when they get a job and they start flying? is there any kind of ongoing review that goes on? >> well there is clearly a medical review. greg there is a psychological review isn't there, when you are coming back for your regular checkups there is a psychological review in the
8:09 am
united states. >> you go through the protocols when you first get hired. they run you through a battery of psychological tests. but during the course of doing your annual or your recurrent medicals the ame will talk to you. they'll ask about life events and things like that because they're actually studying you to see if there's any issues that they need to be concerned with. >> but you know here's the thing that i came away from malaysia flight 370 with. that plane is still missing, and the leading theory -- and it's only a theory -- is that that pilot went rogue, that that pilot may have brought that plane down. again, it's only a theory. we don't have the plane. but all along, psychologists and psychiatrists were saying it's very difficult for you and i on the outside to see what's going on in somebody's head. if they're having a psychological breakdown, some sort of a psychotic episode, it's very difficult for us to recognize it and know what's going on. and it may be very difficult to see the signs. >> and tom, are we going to have to come up with a new era of technology? right now we have fortified cockpit doors, a system of a coded keypad to let pilots in
8:10 am
but we also now know that we have a system inside the cockpit where a pilot can override that pad. are we going to have to now have somebody one other person on that plane, a member of the flight crew who has a code that supersedes that to allow them to get in? >> boy, i don't know. you know clearly the main threat continues to be from terrorism, from an al qaeda type of threat to an aircraft. and we know that they are still intent on bringing down an aircraft. and these incidents are rare although we have had several over the last few years of pilots who have had a psychotic episode, and they came out of the plane and then broke down. you may recall, and were banging on the door to get back in and the pilot refused. other incidents in which pilots have in fact flown the plane into the ground. it happened with egypt air. but these are air incidents in the grand scheme of things. i don't know how you guard against the one pilot out there in a universe of pilots that are all doing their jobs and doing
8:11 am
them well. >> exactly. tom and greg, thank you so much. >> yeah. just incredibly disturbing developments that we're going through. and if you're just tuning in right now, we now have learned from french authorities, the prosecutor in marseilles that it appears this co-pilot whose name is andreas lubitz intentionally brought down that germanwings plane on tuesday. 150 people including the co-pilot were killed. we're hearing harrowing details from the cockpit voice recorder. >> shortly after the plane reached 38,000 feet the pilot got up for a natural break, perhaps to use the restroom. the co-pilot then locked the door overrode the security pad system so that pilot could not get back in. and despite gentle banging and then more violent banging trying to open that door the co-pilot said nothing until that plane flew into the mountain at 6,000 feet. >> i think one of the most harrowing details we learned this morning that in those file moment final moments you do hear screams of passengers.
8:12 am

i'm al and jenna bush. disturbing news about the german wings air crash. >> yes. investigators have released more information apparently what appears to have happened there. right now, the indications are that the co-pilot appears to have crashed that plane deliberately with one150 people on board including high school students and small children. let's go to nbc correspondent keir simmons, who is in france at the crash site with the latest of what we've learned. >> reporter: good morning. the ceo of lufthansa that owns the smaller airline this aircraft was flying under describes himself as speechless and says in his worst nightmare he couldn't imagine an a320 flying into the mountain range with the co-pilot at the controls apparently deliberately descending it into this
9:02 am
devastating crash. prior to the news conference with the ceo, we heard from the french prosecutor and he outlined exactly what they now believe happened. he said the co-pilot locked himself in the cookckpit and basically refused to open the door for the pilot banging on the door. what they have done is analyzed a black box they found which recorded the sounds they heard in the time while this aircraft was descending from 38,000 feet. what the french prosecutor has said is that there was an ordinary conversation between theco-pilot. as they reached altitude, the pilot gets out and goes we think perhaps to the restroom, closes the door. when he comes back, he is not able to get back in to the cockpit. he begins to bang on the door. the co-pilot will not let him
9:03 am
back in again. and it gets more and more frantic and there is no response from the co-pilot according to the french prosecutor. what you can hear on the tape is the co-pilot breathing so he is clearly still alive right up to the moment the plane hits the side of the mountain. in the final minutes we're told there are other sounds of passengers screaming as they realize what is going on, absolutely terrifying. the french prosecutor says we assume the co-pilot meant to destroy the plane and asked german authorities for information on his personality. what we know about him, he is 28, he is german. he had just over 600 thundershowers of-- hours of flying experience and just finished training and joined german wings, the airline,
9:04 am
germanwings and joined them straight from his training. the bigger irl group say they do have psychologyical training for pilots and co-pilots and careful who they choose. he couldn't understand how this happened. we choose our candidates very carefully, he says. he describes it as a tragic exceptional incident. he makes clear the reason why this happened is because of the security on the door in the cockpit. there is a code on the door that does enable the pilot outside of the cockpit to get back in, if for example his co-pilot is incapacitated or ill or something like that. in fact, though, any inside can stop that code from working, and that, they think, appears to be what the co-pilot did. the co-pilot then intentionally, deliberate
9:05 am
deliberately maneuvers the plane down towards the mountains. it is effectively a suicide by the co-pilot. and the murder of 149 passengers and crew who are on board this plane. you can only imagine what they were going through, what they were thinking about in the perhaps minutes they had, as it dawned on them what was occurring. we have been told authorities have ruled out terrorism, they do not believe that is why. then the question is left as to what the psychology callical background of this co-pilot was that led him to do this. it doesn't look as if it was something planned. if the pilot had gone up and gone to the restroom he wouldn't necessarily know that would happen. i guess he would suspect it might at some point. some questions they're asking is whether that is right, pilot or co-pilot can be left in the cockpit on their own like that, is that safe? another question is going to be
9:06 am
what exactly the background of the co-pilot that led him to do this. back to you. >> keir simmons, thank you so much. the french prosecutor also saying there's nothing to suggest this was a terror attack, but it certainly is terrifying. >> the part that makes me feel the most sick is like you said, the kids are on this plane. when my husband heard that, you know, this was an act that meant to be on purpose, he said, think about those parents, those high school parents waiting for their kids at the airport to come home from spain and how they feel now. when you hear about people that do these acts of evil, you have to think about those kids and their parents and the amazing loss they feel today. >> that's a horrible horrible situation. >> let's move on to something a little lighter. there is joseph, $7 million richer. >> all right! >> have you guys ever won a scratchoff lottery ticket?
