across the bay. not much wind. not much fog. nice start. 53 degrees in san francisco and the view of the san jose by silhouette right now. 51 degrees. hazy skies and hazy around dublin. not much in the way of fog in the try valley. we'll see patchy clouds at times. mostly sunny skies. you see the lack really of any high clouds or any clouds that produce any rain. all that right now around seattle and portland. we're going to see temperatures climb tomorrow, perhaps, some low to mid 80s. temperatures climbing up more tomorrow. a look at your weekend forecast coming up. >> we look forward to it. thanks. we begin now with continuing coverage of the killing of san jose police officer michael johnson. it was an emotional night last night as more vigils were held. one vigil attend bid the gunman's family.

the united viet american neighbors organized this vigil for johnson who wanted to show appreciation for his service and sacrifice. more than 100 people gathered near the site where he was gunned down. they paid tribute to johnson. they stopped for a moment of silence and sang amazing grace. on tuesday night san jose police responded to a call about an armed suicidal man on center road. police say as they approached 57-year-old scott dunham shot and killed officer johnson without warning. he's the first officer killed in the line of duty in 14 years. the gunman's niece tells us she was at the vigil last flight to mourn the loss of both men. >> we feel like we're caught in the middle. we're mourning for the officer but we're mourn b for our uncle. >> after johnson was shot and killed his partner shot and killed dunham. he suffered from copd, depression and alcoholism.

hundreds of people gathered at city hall to remember officer johnson. ♪ did you ever know you're my hero ♪ >> the night was filled with prayer and thanks to all police officers but especially officer johnson who made the ultimate sacrifice keeping the others safe. most people didn't know johnson personally. they just wanted to honor his life including the city's new mayor. >> i can't know the depth of the pain of the brothers and sisters of san jose police department. >> truly tragic is what we had tuesday night for all of us. >> the police officers and attendants were overwhelmed with hugs and hand shakes of gratitu gratitude. attendees say they will try to do that every time they see an officer on the street from now on. here's a live look for the memorial service for officer

johnson will take place. thursday, april 2nd. at 11:00 a.m. it is open to the public and we'll cover what is sure to be a remembrance for the fallen officer. as san jose mourns the loss of officer johnson the police department's command staff is answering some tough questions. officers say the night of the shooting their computers in their patrol cars glitched limiting the information they needed to receive for help. this officer says it happened to him several times before. he's been sending memos to the department and to the city for months. he says even though he might be reprimanded he has no regrets about speaking out. >> enough is enough. i'm tired of this. i'm tired of this. it is a complete officer safety issue. >> the command staff tells us they know about the system overload problem as well as a cell tower issue. they tell us there'll be a new system in place in all of the patrol cars at the end of the

people like you. you saved my life and i'm so grateful. >> you may remember in 2007 knox's roommate was found dead at the apartment they shared in italy. knox and her former boyfriend were convicted in 2009 and set free in 2011 because of a lack of evidence against them and in 2013 they were once again convicted in a retrial. but yesterday's ruling by the italian supreme court means that the cloase is closed for good a knox is a free woman. a judge sentenced a former east bay elementary school teacher to 12 years in prison for molesting his students. joseph martin was a teacher at woodside elementary in con cord. in january he was convicted of molesting seven boys. all the victims were in his class between 2007 and 2013. the germanwings pilot who appears to have deliberately

crashed a plane into the french alps should not have been working the day of the crash according to torn up doctors' notes declaring him unfit to work for days. exactly what that medical condition was remain as mystery. a german newspaper is reporting he had a serious bouts of depression six years ago and was being treated for mental illness. meanwhile, a former girlfriend of lubitz says he told her one day he would do something heinous everyone would know his name. she broke up with him last year. coming up, we'll hear from the woman at the center of the gender discrimination trial just moments after she lost the case. >> hey, guys. wrestlemania is coming to town. one of us is the superstar wrestler jack swagger and the other is going to tell you about

welcome back. taking a live look outside in san jose. it's a nice morning. some bay area communities are seeing patchy fog. temperatures in the 70s across the bay area and even warmer tomorrow. it's a legal loss for one woman but will it be a help to other women working in the venture capital industry? the gender bias trial ended yesterday. jurors sided with perkins that the firm did not discriminate against powell but not before revealing many secrets. we have more. >> reporter: a lawsuit that's received international attention. ellen powell sued her former employer saying she was discriminated against because she's a woman. was passed over for a promotion

and fired when she complained about it. her attorneys argued the firm was run like a boys' club where men were judged by one standard and women by another. after a five week trial the jury disagreed. >> i have told my story and thousands of people have heard it. if i helped to level the playing field for women and minorities then the battle was worth it. >> the firm's attorneys argued she was blaming others for her own failing and she constantly complain complained. >> it never occurred to me for a second that a careful and attentive jury like this would find either discrimination or retaliation, and i'm glad to have been proven right about that. >> we try to look at as many aspects of the trial as we could. we try to be as fair as we could in terms of our decision-making. so it wasn't easy.

we went around the room for votes a number of times. >> the jury ended up voting 9/3 against powell. some say the trial has been a wakeup call for the industry regardless of the outcome. >> california emergency crews are gearing up for a rough wildfire season. the new four-wheel drive trucks have water tanks and enough tools and equipment for a four-person crew. they cost $400,000 each. the funds were allocated through the state legislature. the engines will be based in sacramento and able to respond throughout the state. now, to continuing coverage on the state's historic drought. there's new relief on the way. the governor tweeted this picture as he signed a $1 billion drought relief package. it expedites spending for

winds coming in off the ocean but not expected to be as strong over the next 36 hours. we did get a short-term cooldown yesterday. the pattern will reverse as we go through the weekend as we see temperatures climb up. comparing the temperatures now, it may feel cool at 40s and 50. lousivill lousiville, 28 degrees. driving temperatures down into the 30s in atlanta right now. out west we're going to see our temperatures climb as high pressure holds on and fortunately that's going to keep rain or any chance of snow off of the north as we go through the weekend. pleasant for outdoor plans and high clouds passing by. you can see areas of coastal low clouds for the morning. as we head through the afternoon high clouds passing by and for tomorrow a few more clouds

approaching the north bay but the valley temperatures will have a chance at reaching 80s. more so more tomorrow. some low clouds at times this morning. 40s and 50s and lunchtime temperatures closing in around 70 livermoore and mid afternoon you're getting close to 80 degrees in livermoore in 74 and san jose with high temperatures around san francisco and oakland in the upper 60s, to 70s. san jose close to 70 degrees. as we show you the north bay temperatures, mid to upper 70s. for the tri valley highs upper 70s. as high pressure strengthens turns warming. keeping most of the shower opportunities off to the north. temperatures climbing up for sunday and then a little bit cooler monday into tuesday. we'll see the sea breeze pick up again. once the weekend ends and the

welcome back this morning. we have some special guests from pets in need. we're going to introduce you to milo. a 4 1/2 year chihuahua mix rescued back in 2011. he was very sick suffering from a skin condition. pets in need gave him the care and attention he needed but then he was diagnosed with an invasive type of skin operable cancer inside his mouth. he didn't have long until live. that is until sheila came along. her daughter saw a post on the pets in need facebook page. they came in to give milo a foster home which has given this dog a new lease on life. welcome to sheila and milo and

executive director here. this is an incredible story. we always have dogs every weekend or sometimes cats and we want to get them a home. either a foster home or adoptive home. this is really a testament to your no-kill shelter and a dog getting a second chance. >> it is. and we're very proud of milo. he came to us about 4 1/2 years ago and already had some pretty serious physical problems and as a no-kill shelter we make a commitment once we rescue an animal, we have the responsibility to take care of him or her for the life regardless of physical condition or medical situations. >> you did. you did take care of him. >> right. >> he had a really bad diagnosis. she'll sheila, you have only had milo about a month and a half. >> yes. >> you have seen a dramatic change already.

>> it's amazing. you wouldn't believe that this dog hadn't been socialized or had the same experience as any other dog had. he has just blossomed and everybody has seen it. he's starting to take things for granted which is wanted instead of being grateful to be out, he's acting a little spoiled now. that's wonderful to see. >> that's a great change. for 4 1/2 years he was living in the shelter. about four years i guess now was living in the shelter and al, you said he was stolen. >> yeah. sheila and i were just talking about it. he seemed -- he didn't have that spark and he was just -- looked like he was sort of going through the motions. >> yeah. >> and i was struck by -- i mentioned to sheila i was struck by how much life he seems to have now in the videos that sheila sends and playing with his brothers and sisters. a great success story for us.
