and roll half-marathon. runners starting. a beautiful day. it's going to be warm. it's jon gosselin go-- it's goo getting out early. rob mayeda is here. >> well across to records around the bay area, we broke one yesterday. a nice view there. the runners heading northbound there with 50 degrees. beautiful skies there. high clouds off in the distance. fog free now in san francisco. hazy skies, the sun rising over the tri-valley. hour by hour, patchy morning clouds around the north bay. then around noon, temperatures in the 70s. as we head into the afternoon, livermore, low 80s around 3:00. could see mid 80s again around the north bay and tri-valley. if you're lucky enough to have tickets to wrestlemania 31, levi stadium feeling more like summer. looking at temperatures in the 80s around mid-afternoon, the

sea breeze will cool things off approaching the evening. more a cooldown coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. happening today, it's considered the super bowl of wrestling. more than 70,000 screaming fans will converge on levi stadium to root for their favorite wwe wrestlers. bta says it's ready for the fans. the system has practiced with the whole season of the 49er games under its belt. the big difference is that many fans will be from out of town and many using the light rail for the first time. yesterday, thousands of fans poured in to san jose's convention center to wait for hours to take a picture with wrestling stars and snap up all that cool merchandise. fans from 40 countries are expected to visit levi stadium for the first time today. bta leaders say they are ready for the crush of crowds. >> we've been told that over 70% of the attendees for this event

now a neighborhood and officers are on high alert. this man could be connected to as many as three kidnapping attempts on teenage girls as they walked to school. it's shaken family in the east bay yashd and at two high schools. detectives -- neighborhood and at two high schools. detectives hope to find him before he strikes again. described as 5'7", mid 20s with a thin build, short beard and goatee. hayward police say a 16-year-old girl tells them she was walking home from hayward high school friday around 4:00 in the afternoon near wallford and fletcher lane when she was grabbed by a man and pulled in the back of a white four-door car. >> the suspect showed her a fireman, and she struggle -- firearm, and she struggled and was ultimately able to fight him off and get away from him. she ran home to her parents' house, and the parents then called 911. >> investigators are exploring the possibility that this is

connected to two similar incidents near tennyson high in february and early march. those teens got away. police say they are increasing their patrols. a man has died after a fight on saturday. now san jose police are investigating what exactly happened. witnesses tell us a fight broke out in front of miss taverna lounge in san jose. one of the men involved was driven to standford hospital early yesterday morning where he was pronounced dead. investigators have classified the death as suspicious. and if it's ruled a homicide, it would be san jose's seventh homicide of the year. meanwhile, arrangements being made to say good-bye to the san jose officer killed in the line of duty on tuesday. hundreds showed up to san jose city hall for a vigil to honor officer michael johnson on friday night. he died after being shot by a man while police responded to a welfare check. johnson was the first sjpd officer to be killed on the job in 14 years.

his funeral will take place this thursday with a public memorial at sap center. hundreds of police officers across the country are expected to come and pay their respects. and new this morning, some scary moments for passengers on board an air canada plane that skidded off the runway while landing at halifax national airport last night. injuring more than 20 people. according to air canada, flight 624 was traveling from toronto to halifax when it made a hard landing and slid off the runway around 9:00 p.m. our time. the airport spokesperson says the plane was under control when it left the runway. it was snowing at the time of the landing, and flight 624 was carrying 138 passengers and crew members. 23 people sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital just to be checked out. passengers described what happened after it landed. >> there was a couple of people screaming, but it was more

shock. like we just thought that we were landing hard. and then when the gear started to come -- air bag started to deploy and you saw things falling on the floor, you said, no, we've got to get out. >> reporter: power at the airport was knocked out for a period of time due to the runway crash. the incident is under investigation. we are learning new details of the german co-pilot who crashed his jet in the french alps. an ex-girlfriend is revealing what may have motivated him to kill himself and 149 others. nbc's bill neely has the latest from france. >> reporter: here in france and in germany, they are still searching for bodies, for clues, and for an answer to the question what on earth drove this man to commit mass murder. co-pilot andreas lubitz hid medical problems from the airline he worked for he was more candid with a flight attendant who said she was his former girlfriend. in an interview with germany's

best-selling tabloid newspaper, she claimed lubitz said last year, "one day i'm going do something that will change the whole system, and then everyone will know my name." she'd flown with lubitz for several months and said he had health problems and felt pressured by work. nbc news can't confirm her allegations, but investigators are focusing on his mental state and medical records after finding torn-up sick notes at his apartment declaring him unfit to work on the day of the crash. more than 30 investigators were flown to the crash site to search for the missing flight recorder and for bodies. >> the first priority is the identification of the bodies. the fact there is 150 people that died there, that's why it's hard. >> reporter: the family of the plane's pilot who tried to smash his way back into the locked cockpit got as close as they could. like the other bereaved gather beneath the mountain where their loved ones still lie, lost in

good morning. it's 7:15. a live look outside, foster city. looks like hazy sunshine, but it's going to be a beautiful sunday. some intense exercise for a good cause in san francisco this weekend. folks raced up flights of stairs in the fight for air climb. the fundraiser took place inside the skyscraper at 555 california street. the former bank of america building. it's the second tallest building in the city with 52 stories. this was all in an effort to help the american lung association, and climber said it was tough but definitely worth it. >> hot, heavy breathing. and it's an exhilarating feeling when you make it to the top. >> the idea is to challenge people to climb for loved ones literally fighting for air because of lung problems. landmarks around the world went dark to raise awareness last night for climate change in support of earth hour. two bay area landmarks took part

in the demonstration. you see as the brooklyn bridge hit the off switch -- the bay bridge hit the off switch and lights went out for earth hour starting at 8:30. and golden gate bridge turned off most of its lights, some were left on, though, for safety reasons. and although it's known as the city of light, paris also participated for a short time by turning off the lights of the eiffel tower. the world wildlife fund started earth hour in australia in 2007. with all those light out, people around the world could have used this -- night vision. now there's a chance it could happen. california researchers have created eye drops that allow you to temporarily see in the dark and to see distances of up to 60 yards. researchers say it only lasts for a few hours before your eyes return to normal. they also say they need to do more tests before it hits the market. things they come up with. you can never predict. >> nice to have. what's it looking like in the weather department? a beautiful day? >> all the picture gorgeous.

nice start. 40s and 50s outside. one thing does stand out with these numbers. look at the north bay, 41? -- 41 inssistant rosa. you factor in how warm it should get, in some cases, the north bay will see 40 degrees of warming between now and 2:00 in the afternoon. this is what happens when you have clear skies, dry air in place, high pressure boosting temperature. a closer look at the golden gate bridge shows a lot more folks there running across the bridge instead of cars. this is the rock and roll half-marathon. began around the great highway, moving across -- northbound across the golden gate bridge, then again heading south. wrapping up at civic center plaza traffic as you head northbound, you might want to look out for this at least for now with runners picking up lanes on the right side northbound there across the golden gate bridge. there you see san jose, 50 degrees, we've got hazy sunshine now. and not much wind to speak of for the moment. as their temperatures heat up inland, that should trigger the

mid-afternoon sea breeze that will cool off places like san francisco and the coast later on. notice the jet stream pattern here. we've got the relatively mild temperatures out west. even now as we approach 10:00 in the morning there, out on the east coast, they're seeing temperatures in the 30s. some nasty windchills, canadian air conditioning dropping down the east coast. the jet stream here, still too far to the north to bring us any rain or sierra snow. the high pressure keeping that moisture off to the north. underneath the ridge of high pressure, just a few maybe high clouds passing by at times as we head into the afternoon. temperatures again today will be quite mild. just a f.y. patches of clouds out there on the coastline. as we head into the afternoon, we'll see highs today in the mid 70s to mid 80s out toward parts of the north bay and tri-valley. so 40s and 50s as you saw now. we'll see numbers in the 70s as early as noon today. then eventually some 80s in the forecast. and then temperatures moving up. close to 80 today in san jose. mid 80s around los gatos and

morgan hill. morgan hill, mid 70s. a sea breeze will cool things off for you. san jose at 80. levi stadium, wrestlemania 31, summer-like temperatures out there. be prepared. get hydrated before you head outdoors. if you have tickets for the event, mid-afternoon, we'll begin to the sea breeze pick up toward 6:00. we should begin to see temperatures cooling off a little built there in santa clara. for the north bay, if you can see the numbers, climbing to the low to mid 80s. in the tri-valley, might break records this afternoon. we tied a few yesterday. looks like we could see more of the same as we head through today. by tomorrow and tuesday, we begin to see a stronger sea breeze. storm system that are going to eventually get a little closer to the bay area, but not bring any rain. kind of reinforce the ocean air conditioning at times. cooler for the first half of the week. temperatures climbing by thursday. and then we hope, fingers crossed, we'll see a stronger system drop in by next sunday. that may toss showers our way. this weekend will end with highs

day. at 7:32. bart riders should be prepared for a sporadic closure in the east bay starting next weekend. bart leaders say the closures will be between the fruitvale and coliseum stations through august. crews will be working on repairs to equipment on tracks between the two stations. and bart will provide bus bridges to riders who don't have other options to get between stations. and those bus rides will be free. go to nbcbayarea.com for more information on the closures. an internationally known singer and songwriter, norman green bomb, has been hurt in a crash east of santa rosa. this is video from the scene. he was a passenger in the subaru that crashed into a motorcyclist. the motorcyclist was killed, and he's not been identified. greenbaum and a passenger on the motorcycle were taken to a santa rosa memorial hospital with critical injuries. greenbaum is best known for his 1969 megahit "spirit in the sky."

seven months after robin williams' tragic suicide, his family is taking their battle over his estate into the courtroom. according to court documents, tomorrow morning williams' three children will dispute with williams' widow. they're fighting over the rights to williams' warren county home and the belongings inside. the case over the details of williams' trust is expected to go beyond tomorrow's initial hearing. and it's spring which means high school juniors across the bay area are anxious. they're getting ready to take the s.a.t., of course. a time-honored tradition and necessities for getting into many colleges. this test is about to get a makeover. in this morning's "classes action," we show how they're redesigning the s.a.t. have many of you thought about which colleges you would like to go to? >> reporter: these high school students at impact academy in hayward have a lot to look forward to these days. >> i want to go to standford --

>> reporter: including applying for college. they're taking a program to help them prepare for the high-stakes s.a.t. students here say the s.a.t. is daunteding partly because it doesn't reflect what they've learned. >> it's just not like -- not telling the colleges who i am as a person, because it's not showing my academics behind it. >> sometimes they test you on stuff that you're never going to know -- like really need in life. >> reporter: those are some of the reasons why the s.a.t. is getting an overhaul. this is the last year of the old s.a.t. >> sayonara. we're really excited about the one that's coming up. >> reporter: she says the new s.a.t. will more accurately reflect what students learn in high school. the idea behind the remodel, to level the playing field and make it more accessible. >> i think the college board is really working with equity in mind and working with with to make the deficit more fair. >> reporter: a-- the test more fair. >> reporter: among the changes, no more penalty for wrong

usual. that leads to two very interesting outcomes. first, the state's receiving more revenues from personal income taxes, corporate taxes, sale tax, all the good stuff. in addition, the state is spending less for safety net programs. more people are working. you have more income, less spending, that's puts the state on solid footing. as you said, a surplus that could amount to $2 billion by june 30th. >> there's so much need. such an unusual situation. you know, what do you think you'll do with this? >> the question, right, a basis point, what do we do -- we're not used to this kind of thing. a couple of things, we've had two categories of answers. the known and the unknown. let's look first at the known. and by law, the state must commit at least 40% of general revenues to k through 12 public education. that means another $800 million for california schools.

that's important . why? even though california increased education spending after the passage of proposition 30 in 2012, the state is still way below the average in. then there's the second category, the unknown. and here are some possible recipients of more money. first of all, the two-state university systems, perhaps as much as a couple of hundred million to overcome their vast, and i mean vast underfunding for the past four years and a standoff between governor brown and state higher education leaders. another category. the social safety net program such as nursing facilities and other elder care programs that have suffered cuts during the great recession. third, of course, we know about drought. drought relief as we deal with the fourth year of woe followy insufficient rates. finally, of course, the state reserve. which is now in place and would benefit from a greater infusion to cope with lean times in the future. we've got lots of places to put that dough. >> is this a trend?

we have more positive news to come, do you think? >> well, here -- here's where we pop the bubble as we say. we pop the bubble because, yeah, we've got that surplus. perhaps, $2 trillion this year. and it -- maybe even the year after. that takes us to june 30th, 2017. but there's an 800-gorilla in the room known as, yes, that proposition 30, passed in 2012. now, if we recall, that initiative collects $7 billion more each year because of higher taxes on the wealthy and the sales tax increase on the rest of us. that measure will sunset, go away, by 2018. so meaning that our comfy, cozy surplus, if you will, could quickly become a negative of $4 billion or $5 billion. wow. what a switch. so the big question is do the governor and legislature do something about overhauling the revenue system in a more

permanent way between now and 2018? or do we find ourselves in yet another crisis down the road? you know, we've watched this before, the answer to this question like so many will tell us much about the leadership in the near future and how this state manages its very tough up and down financial affairs. >> it always is. >> yeah. particularly in this date where we are so dependent -- 2/3 of the state's general fund comes from one source. and that's the personal income tax. any time you're reliant on that, when the economy takes a dip, we all dip with it. so we've got to do something and make things more evenly balanced. >> thank you. see you next week. much more ahead. coming up, wrestlemania at levi stadium won't be the only reason why the south bay will be jam-packed with tens of thousands of people today. a family entertainment staple is turning 40. right now, we're watching dozens of people running across the golden gate bridge.

will have a chance of reaching the 80s, especially in the north bay valleys and tri-valley. closer look at your neighborhood forecast coming up in a moment. mostly clear around the bay area. no fog. a few high clouds as you look toward the north bay. a very chilly 41 degrees currently in santa rosa. you see here, golden gate bridge has the rock and roll half-marathon runners coming back from marin county across the golden gate bridge. wrapping up out at civic center plaza. temperatures at least right now near 50. later on, san francisco seeing highs climbing into the mid 70s. if you compare the temperatures you're seeing now yesterday morning with the clear skies and dry air, in some cases running a little cooler than yesterday, even though we're starting off in the 40s, we could see a 40-degree swing in temperatures into the afternoon. high pressure making for dry condition out west. and some very chilly temperatures across the east coast as we approach close to 11:00 in the morning. those temperatures only in the low 30s out toward new york city. for us today, mostly sunny

skies. really no sign of rain as we see a ridge of high pressure keeping the snow to the north. and from time to time, you'll see bands of high clouds coming as we head toward the afternoon. just a few patches of low clouds near the coastline and occasionally high clouds passing by. high pressure for now, probably at its strongest. for the next seven days as temperatures climb up this afternoon into the 70s and 80s. 40s and 50s for a short time through 8:00 and 9:00, by noon, already starting to climb into the 70s. certainly around livermore and san jose, then by mid-afternoon, upper 70s to low 80s. up around the north bay, livermore, 82. you see san jose downtown getting very close to 80 degrees this afternoon. warmer at saratoga, los gatos, highs in the mid 80s. toward levi stadium, wrestlemania 31, you'll see numbers more accustomed to summer as the temperatures will be close to 80. and then the sea breeze cools
