>> i had to pull out the secret weapon. we'll have more. our top story to get to. p the investigation into that tragic plane crash in the french alps what officials are revealing about the co-pilot. nbc's katy tur is at the german wingings headquarters. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we have breaking news for you. the prosecutor's office released a report in which they said they did not find any evidence of an organ ic illness, something like cancer or heart disease. they did find evidence that he was treated for suicidal tendencies several years ago before he got his pilot's license. they add that doctors saw him recently, found no evidence of suicidal tendencies, no evidence aggressiveness toward others, and that right now they still have no clear motive for why he did this. in the alps the recovery is slow and arduous. workers dropped in by helicopter or climbed up by foot. each collecting pieces, one by

one, of debris and parts of bodies. the work proving just as trying as the investigation into the man they say caused it all, seen here a decade ago flying a glider according to a german tv station. now, the country's biggest tabloid bild says it obtained a time line from the voice recorder of the plane's final minutes. 10:01 the flight started normally. the captain apologizing for delay. 10:27, the plane reaches cruising altitude the captain asks lubitz to prepare for landing. he replyies hopefully and we'll see. the captain leaves, the sound of lubitz pushing his chair back, the door clicked shut. 10:29 the plane begins to descend. 10:32, air traffic control calls, no answer. the captain begins banging on the door yelling for god's sake open the door. passengers scream in the background.

alarm bells sound. 10:37, again the captain yells, open the damn door. inside the cockpit only steady breathing until 10:40, a sound like the scraping of the plane's right wing on the mountaintop. then nothing. the audio cuts out. nbc news has not independently verified the timeline, and investigators will neither confirm nor deny it. in germany this morning more reports of ss of lubitz issues. and rumors about his personal life. still no answers, no official motive to what could have gone so wrong for the 27-year-old who friends say loved the sky. now, french investigators have told us they collected dna from about half of the victims of that plane crash. they are going to match it up with dna they have been able to collect from family members, still quite a ways to go before they are able to positively identify anyone. >> katy tur at the airlines

headquarters, thank you. the growing debate over a law that critics call anti-gay. signed by indiana's governor critics say it permits business to refuse service to same-sex couples on religious grounds. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. supporters of this law stress that it's meant to protect bigses and individuals from government interference, just a few minutes ago lawmakers here at the state house said the law does not discriminate and that they plan to add to the legislation to clarify its intent. this morning a huge backlash against indiana's religious freedom restoration act. the governor is on the defensive. >> we're not going to change the law, okay. >> reporter: fighting back against critics who say it legalizes discrimination against gay people the governor calls opposition shameless rhetoric but hinted there might be room for clarification. >> if the generally assembly

sends me a bill that reiterates and amplifies and clarifies what the law really is, then i'm open to that. >> he and other supporters point out there are already similar laws protecting religious freedom in 19 other states. >> i haven't seen any credible evidence that people are going to be discriminated against. >> reporter: opponents argue indiana is getting more attention because it does not have a state wide nondiscrimination law that proprotects people no matter their sexual orientation. with a final four set for next weekend here the ncaa issued a statement promising to examine the implications of this the bill and how it might affect future events. the fire storm has spread across social media under the hash tag boycott indiana. celebrities from charles barkley to miley cyrus slammed the law. overnight "the washington post" published an op-ed from tim cook, the highest openly gay ceo in the country. this isn't a political issue.

this is about how we treat each other as human beings. some businesses here are now displaying signs declaring they welcome everyone. >> it's pardon of our brand and this bill doesn't align with that. >> reporter: the president of indiana's called this the law unnecessary. the ceo of angie's list which is based here has announced it's putting expansion plans on hold. many business leaders in the state feel this is unwanted attention, especially ahead of the final four this weekend. willie. >> gabe gutierrez on the story, thanks. overseas in negotiations aimed preventing iran from developing nuclear weapons down to the wire. and so far iran is rejecting what was supposed to be a key part of the deal. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning. this is another challenge for negotiators with only two days

before their deadline, iran is backing away from one part of the proposed agreement, just as time is running out. no answers today as the countries negotiating with iran are taking stock after tehran balked at one element, commitment to ship stock piles out of the country. raising questions about whether u.n. inspectors could see were waing signs if iran cheated. a year before tehran could produce a nuclear bomb. >> the united states is pushing so that the inspections can be more intrusive, the inspectors can get places quicker, and am iran is required to provide more information about what its nuclear activities are. >> kerry and negotiators working round the clock trying to find ways around this and other problems. >> are you optimistic? >> i'm not paid to be optimistic. >> thank you everybody very much.

>> reporter: in fact, the secretary of state's only break was a walk in the rain after midnight. fresh air before another long day and uncertain outcome. plus, if he gets a deal he still has to sell it back home. >> i think now's the time to push back from the table and ask ourselves is it really time to trust the people that we're negotiating with, the iranians. >> i've got serious doubts. i had serious doubts over the last year whether there could be an agreement and i still have serious doubts. we've got a regime that's never quite kept their word about anything. >> reporter: and the state department officials today say there are other ways to deal with the problem of iran's atomic fuel stockpile, but as we say time is running out and this will require other compromises. the russian foreign minister is already leaving, he says he will be back if there is a deal tomorrow. this is another sign things may not be going well. >> as you say the clock is ticking. thank you.

tamron is in fortunately and has a terrible story out of florida. >> breaking news to start off. eight people kill and ten injured when their van crashed in florida. it happened about 80 miles west of west palm beach. officials say the van passed through a stop sign, then careened across all lanes of traffic and ended up crashing into a steep partly water-filled canal. the driver and seven passengers were confirmed dead, ten other people were taken to the hospital. now to unbelievable video out of california. a firefighter is in critical condition this morning after he fell through a roof of a burning garage on sunday afternoon. the whole thing was caught on camera. this cell phone video captures the terrifying moments sunday afternoon when a firefighter walking on top of a burning garage in fresno, california, plunged through the roof while trying to ventilate the building. as he fell, a blaze of fire caused onlookers to scream in

horror. >> scared. it was scary. i was panicking. >> reporter: it took firefighters three minutes to pull him from the garage, the 25-year veteran suffered burns on his hands, face, back and legs. over 65% of his body. 40% of his body suffering third degree burns. >> with the firefighter off of the garage, we removed his clothes, doused him with water. took his uniform off, he was burned from head to toe. >> after the the accident firefighters immediately followed their colleague to the hospital, praying for his survival. >> we are a family, brothers and sisters, and as you can see here, we rally around each other and are very supportive. >> now to a breaking story at the national security agency at ft. meade there was a security incident. nbc's jim miklaszewski joins us from the pentagon with the latest. good morning.

we are more than just our children. we have identities and jobs and passions outside of our household. >> success the researchers say is far more dependent on the mom's education level. mothers today are spending more engaged time with their children than in the '70s. that's with more mothers in the workforce. >> moms tend to guilt themselves into craziness. we're constantly putting so much pressure on ourselves to be with our children as much as possible. >> reporter: the study argues that stress in general could actually lead to a negative impact on children. for example, if mom gets home tired, anxious and feeling guilty. the study goes on to look at adolescence, as well, an concludes time spent with parents, not just mothers, can keep a teen focused and out of trouble. the study specifically mentions the importance of meal time.

our faith was, if our child only had nine months to live then we were going to give him nine months in the womb and let god decide once the child was born. >> derek, john paul i guess, had three experimental surgeries after he was born. at what point in that process did you turn to your faith and start to see the benefits of prayer? >> you know my parents have always been very religious, and because of my parents, my upbringing was faith. and i knew that i could rely on god, because god has been with me throughout my life. and john paul when he was born a priest said to me you know what let god do what needs to be done for this kid. and you know what? he's a miracle and 20 years later, what else can i say? it's black and white, you know? >> he's outgoing he's got the best penalty. we just fell in love with you in the commercial break. and i was going on and on about

your outfit. but you know john paul you learned a lot from your parents about faith. how have you implemented it now that you're an adult in your own life? >> i just try to pray every day and i just basically try to thank god for saving my life basically because if it wasn't for god i would not be here today. and i think that we all need to have god in our lives, no matter what religion we are or however we are. we all need to have god to come into our lives and help us because god is really our only friend. and he needs to be with us forever. >> dr. koenig, let me turn to you, because i know you've done a number of studies about the power of prayer. what have you found? does it heal? >> well you know here's an example of the power of prayer and we've done a lot of studies, and there has been a lot of research from all over the world that has looked at the role that prayer and religious activity what role that plays in a person's health.

and it does seem to help people to have hope gives them meaning and purpose, helps them to overcome depression, which is very common when you have to go through a lot of hard experiences. and religion and god seems to make a real difference in people's lives. there's just no question about it. >> doctor what do you tell people who, though believe that prayer can ultimately heal you without turning to medicine and things that they can get from a hospital or a doctor? what do you say to those people? >> well tamron it's a tough thing to resolve when somebody says that you know they want to stop their medication or they don't need medicine. but it really works best when religion and medicine go together. it's a whole picture, where we're spirits, you know we're social and we're psychological and we're physical and you just can't separate all those apart.

now to our special series "do you believe?" over the next few days we'll try to understand what it means to have faith and be spiritual. >> today we're asking the question, does prayer work? the "today" show surveyed over 1,500 people, and more than half of them say they pray. and nearly 70% of those who do pray say they do it every day. but does the same go for kids? >> so we decided to send our good friend jenna bush hager out to find out more. hey. >> this was if you. i had the chance to sit down with some very special kids. and i asked them if they prayed and whether they consider themselves spiritual. let's just say they had a lot to say. ♪ >> we have a problem, he says come. come to me as you are. >> i pray five times a day. it's a way i worship god. >> i feel more spiritual when i'm meditating.

>> reporter: for so many a relationship with god or a deep spirituality is an important part of their lives. and modern science has taken notice. lisa miller, a columbia university psychologist and author of the new book "the spiritual child" has spent over a decade researching the impact of religion and spirituality. >> here we have maps of the human brain. and what we can see here in red are all of the regions of the brain where there is a thicker cortex in people with a strong personal spirituality. it doesn't matter what religious denomination they are. >> reporter: the cortex is associated with i.q. the thicker, the better. a thinner cortex is associated with depression and alzheimer's. who benefits the most? kids. studies show they're 40% less likely to abuse substances and 60% less likely to be severely depressed as teens. if they have faith or are spiritual.

>> it can be allah, god, the universe, but some type of personal relationship with a higher power is more protective against mental health problems and suffering than anything known to the medical or social sciences. >> reporter: and miller says prayer plays a role. so how can we -- is prayer part of your daily life? >> yes. prayer is a way to communicate with god. it's something essential for me. when you pray to god, it's not something that you have to have something in your head but basically have god there all the time. >> reporter: raise your hand if you think you can be spiritual but not religious. mm-hmm. kind of. >> i'm spiritual but i don't consider myself to be religious. my father is jewish and my mother is catholic, but i don't practice religion in any way. i meditate. sometimes i speak to god. and i don't even know if i believe in god. so it's spiritual, but it's not organized in any way for me.
