andrew getty, the grandson of oil tie con j. paul getty was found dead in his home. he was just 47. at this point the coroner says it doesn't appear there was any criminal activity involved. he had been feeling i'm and was planning to see a doctor today. sources say there was trauma to his body. police say a woman in the home at the time is being questioned. now to the crash in the alps. lufthansa airlines is under fire after admitting it knew about the co-pilot's mental history. this morning the airline's ceo visited the crash site to remember the 150 lives lost. afterwards he spoke to reporters. >> i would like to also give my word to the victims that we don't only help this week. we want to help as long as help is needed. that's also my promise. we're very very sorry that such

a terrible accident could have happened in lufthansa where we put so much focus on safety. >> nbc's claudia la vagna is near the crash site for us. what is the latest? >> reporter: the ceos of germanwings and lufthansa said sorry to the families of the victims from the germanwings crash. a number of times during the press conference they also wanted to thank the volunteers investigators and locals personally for their help. they told the locals they want this place to be turned into a memorial site for the families to come any time they want. they also want to restore the countryside that was ruined by that crash. they also said that while we learn more and more about the causes of this accident day by day it will take quote, a long time to finally understand fully what really happened on that

day. what's even more significant perhaps is after the press conference they refused to answer questions posed to them by nbc news about how much they knew about the medical and mental history of andree as lubitz. they said they found transcripts between lubitz and lufthansa in which lubitz said he went through a period of severe depression dara. >> claudio lavagna reporting live from the alps. thank you very much. this morning a new battleground over the fight for controversial religious freedom laws arkansas. the arkansas governor says he'll sign it. but a giant in american retail walmart which is based in arkansas is taking a stand. it publicly came out against that bill yesterday, and its ceo urged a veto. back in indiana nine ceos sent letters to state officials

demanding the law be changed. governor mike pentz tried to clarify yesterday. >> the religious freedom act doesn't give anyone the right to deny services to anyone in this state. it is simply a balancing test used by our federal courts and jurisdictions across the country for more than two decades. >> amid protests a clarification of the law is expected to be on the governor's desk by the end of the week. the march 31st deadline for an iranian nuclear deal has come and gone. talks were extended today in hopes of finalizing a deal. secretary of state john kerry and his fellow negotiators have already started today's meeting. last night via video teleconference carry updated president obama on the status of negotiations so far. nbc's ali arubi is live in tehran with the latest. what is the latest on the talks.

>> reporter: last night when they missed the deadline and agreed to extend for another day or possibly moore it seemed like a glimmer of hope for these things to come through, for this all to pull through. this morning things seemed to be a lot more come keeted again. one of the senior iranian nuclear negotiators and deputy administers was speaking to state television looking slightly frustrated and slightly tired saying all the sanctions which are related to financial bankinging and oil must be removed for an agreement to go into place, something the u.s. resisted on very seriously saying it would remove all leverage on iran if they removed the sanctions immediately. another point of contention in these talks has been iran's research and development in the nuclear field. the deputy foreign minister said iran must forward ahead with advances on centrifuges. these two are trying to come to some sort of political agreement

which doesn't look like it will be reached today. >> thank you ali. after two days of testimony the defense has rested in its case in the boston bombing trial. lawyers for dzhokhar tsarnaev called just four witnesses. there were 92 prosecution witnesses who testified against him. one of those defense witnesses was an fbi fingerprint expert who told jurors only two fingerprints were found on pieces of the bombs and they belong to tsarnaev's older brother tamerlan. closing arguments are scheduled for monday. now to a rescue at sea and a death defying leap off the coast of new england. nine crew members on a tall ship were stranded. the coast guard arrived to help but it wasn't easy. both boats were rocking in ten-foot waves. then one man, he jumps, he lands safely on the coast guard's boat. another man tried to jump but got hurt and had to be

hospitalized. everyone else made it off safely. this next story has it all, danger drama and high anxiety amid a nine-hourman hunt in one of washington, d.c.'s busiest suburbs. nbc's tom costello reports. >> all right. get a perimeter on this house. we're going to try to track this guy. >> reporter: eye drama in a northern virginia neighborhood a zub suspect considered armed and dangerous, barefoot and wearing a hospital gown. it started just before 3:00 a.m., hospital patients and nurses hit in their rooms as s.w.a.t. team members searched for 42-year-old wossen assaye who allegedly overpowered a female security guard, taken her gun and fled. suddenly adding to the confusion, police were called into another high-speed chase close by during rush hour. was it assaye? no it was a female suspect wanted for identity theft crashes into police cruisers before they managed to box her in and smash the window to

arrest her. then they were back searching for the first suspect. >> this guy just did a carjacking. >> he allegedly hit in a woman's trunk and kicked out the back seat when she got in. she then crashed the car. >> i heard a big slam and a lady screaming like crazy. >> reporter: he took off and changed clothes. suddenly the suspect came out of the woods, found a car with a key in it and took off right down the street. finally after nine hours police arrested him without incident in southeast washington. wossen assaye, the bicycle band did for 12 area bank robberies back into custody of federal marshals. nbc's meteorologist bill karins is here with your wednesday forecast. good morning, bill. >> nothing quite as crazy as that story. let's talk about the severe weather and the weather pattern that has changed and thankful

for for some areas. below normal temperatures above normal record heat. we're watching everything shifting across the country. all the record heat that was in the west is now in the midwest. we've returned about average temperatures in many areas of the west and below average in the northeast where it snowed a little bit last night. today, temperatures in the middle of the country going up into the 70s and 80s. this is about 10 to 20 degrees above average. that's exactly the same air mass you had in the west. because you had the cool air come into the northern rockies, we are going to see severe weather of this. the area of greatest concern from woodward oklahoma outside wichita and including omaha, not too many tornadoes. tomorrow, same thing, not too many twisters but we will see large hail and damaging winds there. as far as the forecast in the west, a quiet day today. nothing like what the middle of the country will deal with overs.

leading the news in "usa today" police say uber driver tried to burglarize rider's home. police say the 51-year-old suspect dropped a denver woman off at the airport and went back to rob her home. the woman's roommate allegedly caught him trying to break in. he was identify by a screen shot on the uber receipt. a lamb with human-like features including eyes nose and mouths was born in russia. >> disturbing. >> the lamb's deformities make it resemble an old man, also born with the ears of a sheep. the man who owns him says he nearly died when he saw his face. other stories we're following.

cyclists be i wear this woman was struck on her bicycle and run over. luckily 20 good samaritans rushed to the scene, lifted the car and pulled her out. fortunately she had no life threatening injuries. the oldest person in the world has died at the age of 117. she was born in osaka, japan on march 5, 1898. this great grandmother celebrated her 117th birthday last month and said her life seemed rather short. what would you do if a plane landed on your car while you were driving? that happened yesterday in minnesota when a small plane sliced into this white ford and then crashed into a ditch. the plane's engine lost power soon after takeoff. miraculously the driver her ps jer and the pilot were not injured. a florida dad gives new meaning to the idea of the tooth fairy and we've got to say do not try this at home.
