christian holiday marking good friday "early today" starts right now. good morning. it's castaway and survival rolled into one. a man stranded at sea 66 days floating on a wrecked boat is back on dry land. the coast guard's rescue was caught on video. a storm broke luis jordan's rudder while he was fishing alone in january. yesterday a german tanker spotted him 200 miles off the coast of north carolina. the coast guard airlifted him to a hospital in virginia. he was treated for a broken shoulder and dehydration. jordan survived mostly on ration food, raw fish, and rainwater. not long after his rescue he spoke to nebraska's tom costello. amazingly he called the whole experience a blessing and a gift. >> it helped me to understand what's important in life. family. those who love me. those who i love.

and making a difference in the world. making the world a better place for others. >> you can hear more from tom costello's interview with lewis jordan and his parents this morning on "today." severe weather threat in the storm zone. the midwest and south. millions are bracing for thunderstorms, damaging winds, and possible tornados. the same system just hit kansas and kentucky. in kansas reports of a tornado, this funnel cloud was caught forming in the sky. this storm left hundreds without power. in 65 too much rain flash flooding left cars submerged. this morning reports of 42 water rescues. how long will the severe threat last? nbc meteorologist bill karins with the answer coming up. and to a horrifying massacre overseas in what could be the deadliest attack on a university ever. 147 people are dead mostly students, after masked gunmen from an al qaeda-linked extremist group stormed a campus

yesterday morning. nbc's bill neely is in nairobi, kenya, for us. what's the latest this morning? >> reporter: good morning. there have been protests and prayers this morning for the 147 dead. this is a country in shock after a massacre without mercy. at least four gunmen, and there may have been many more than that stormed a college campus. at the beginning began firing indiscriminately. their aim clearly to murder as many people as possible. but then they began going through dormitories and singling out christians survivors described the horrifying events asking students are you christian or muslim? anyone who replied, i'm christian, was shot on the spot. it took kenyan police and troops quite some time to corner the gunmen. they were eventually cornered. and after some hours the siege was ended. the gunmen were from the al shabaab group, a somali-based group. this is probably the deadliest

attack ever on a university. kenya's president visibly shaken when he addressed the nation. this is a nation that is shaken and a nation indeed that is braced for more. an iranian nuclear outline moves forward. secretary of state jake and his negotiators have outlined a framework of a deal. the agreement restricts iran's ability to create nuclear weapons. in return for a lifting of economic sanctions. but some critics are not fully convinced. senator john mccain questioned some of the elements of the outline and some wonder what if iran cheats? nbc's andrea mitchell had a front-row seat to it all. >> reporter: after marathon talks that almost broke down an agreement far more specific than many had expected. the weary negotiators set off to sell it back home. as president obama launched what will be a tough campaign. >> if iran cheats, the world will know it. if we see something suspicious, we will inspect it.

iran's past efforts to weaponize its program will be addressed. >> reporter: it requires iran not to enrich uranium to weapons grade for 15 years, to reduce its number of operating nuclear sentracentrifuges from 19,000 to just over 5,000. to increase the time it would take to make a bomb from a few months to a year. to convert its underground plutonium reactor to peaceful research. u.n. inspectors will have full access to all of iran's nuclear facilities. iran gets relief from sanctions only if it meets its commitments. iran's foreign minister zarif claimed victory on sanctions. >> when we implement our measures there will be no sanctions. >> reporter: he and kerry couldn't agree on when sanctions will be visited. and zarif objected to a state department fact sheet tweeting, there's no need to spin using fact sheets early on. they couldn't agree on a joint statement. if you couldn't agree on standing up together and

announcing together exactly what you've agreed on here what makes you think in the next three months you're going to actually come to an agreement? >> because there's a great deal of difference for them between what happens now and where this goes and what can happen when you have a final signature. >> you think you can get a deal by june? >> i'm not promising anything nor is the president. what we've done is open up the opportunity. >> reporter: first they'll have to persuade congress and iran's skeptical neighbors. andrea mitchell nbc news lausanne. two big developments in the the crash in the alps. one inside the search zone the other on the copilot's home computer. katy tur reports from koln germany. >> reporter: in the french alps among the scattered debris recovery workers say they've collected 40 smashed cell phones, larger pieces of wreckage in a ravine the normally orange flight data recorder looking so badly burned it was black.

investigators say they are hopefully the data remains intact. inside the germanwings flight second black box french investigators hope to learn what copilot andreas lubitz was doing alone in the cockpit and whether, just before the plane began its steep descent, the auto pilot had been manually changed from 38,000 feet to 100 feet, as the tracking flight radar 24.com suggested last week. meanwhile, inside lubitz's dusseldorf apartment, german investigators hope to learn more about who he was. and why he would allegedly crash the blaineen. they released some of what they found on his tablet computer. the user name the correspondent correspondence, and the entered search words, carry the conclusion the device was used by the copilot said the prosecutor. from march 16 to march 23 the week leading up to the crash, he said lubitz studied medical treatment, various ways and possible methods of committing

suicide, and that he spent several minutes on cockpit doors and their security measures. >> that was nbc's katy tur. republican governors in indiana and arkansas have signed new versions of religious freedom laws. but only after a huge backlash and criticism that the earlier versions allowed discrimination against gays and lesbians. tracesy potts is live in washington. what's the reaction to the so-called fixes? >> it's mixed. there are some companies and organizations that had protested that are now satisfied. others are not. walmart had put a lot of pressure on the state of arkansas. they're the biggest employer in the nation based in arkansas. they put a lot of pressure on leaders there to change that law. and in fact governor hutchinson has signed a new law. and that new law he says mirrors the federal government's protections. different story in indiana where they also rushed through a fix but not everyone's happy with it. governor mike pence signed off on it.

but that law also exempts churches religious groups, and religious organizations like schools from the protections that are afforded they specifically say that service cannot be refused to people based on their gender identity or sexual orientation but that doesn't apply to some religious groups. the ncaa is fine with that the final four this weekend, they had pushed for the law to be changed. angie's list they have a $40 million expansion on hold, they say it's insufficient. >> thank you, tracie. three stomach-churning crashes caught on tape. in texas out of nowhere a truck slams into a store, three cameras capture the direct impact seconds after the crash. witnesses rushed in to help. this is what it looked like from outside. one woman was killed, seven others were hurt. police say the driver barreled into the store while fleeing the scene of another accident. and in oklahoma, this.

an suv hits a school bus head-on. police say it was speeding when the driver lost control. 36 students were on board, six had to be taken to the hospital. investigators aren't sure if he was intoxicated at the time of the crash. they're waiting on test results. now to tennessee. a cop uses his cruiser to stop a wrong-way driver. the woman was going south on a northbound lane. the officer and the driver were both hurt but are okay. the crash is under investigation. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with more on that severe weather outbreak. good morning to you, bill. >> good morning. severe weather is going to be a problem, maybe tornados today. we had a couple yesterday. put today we could actually see a much larger outbreak maybe stronger tornados. the bigger story overnight was

water rescues. we've had dozens of them in the louisville area. and the reason why, 5 inches of rain just since these thunderstorms began late last night. that's going to cause flash flooding almost anywhere. those thunderstorms right now finally exiting the louisville area. still a couple of strong storms in tennessee. but we go throughout the afternoon, if we're going to get really bad weather and we're going to get really big tornados or possibility of any damaging tornados, they're going to be likely in this orange area where enhanced risk of severe stores. mississippi, alabama, up into areas of kentucky. the forecast looks like this. we're nice in areas of the west. still cool in seattle. a slight chance of a sprinkle or two. temperature about 65 in san francisco. 70s in the valley. 84 today in l.a. tomorrow 81. even looking towards easter sunday. we are looking pretty decent throughout the region. not many problems on the weather map. especially in the south. that's yout average for this time

now for an nbc news exclusive. lester holt sat down for an emotional one-on-one interview with the father of american sniper chris kyle. for the first time wayne kyle describes what it was like to sit in a courtroom across from the man who killed his son. >> how are you and debbie doing? i mean there was this movie, this book and all this -- but we're talking about your son. how are you guys doing? >> surviving. it's -- it's been -- the toughest two-plus years of our life. >> what was it like to sit in the courtroom with him? >> it was -- it was horrible. i mean, gut-wrenching. it's just one of those deals
