and a good friday morning. it's 4:30. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia-cannon is off today. we have lots to get to this morning but first we want to get a check of your forecast with this holiday looming overhead. good morning, christina. >> good morning to you, sam and kris. temperatures are cold enough for patchy frost formation. there's a frost advisory issued for the north bay valleys until 8:00 a.m. this morning. however, this afternoon, temperatures are going to rebound nicely, we're into the 70s, just about everywhere. we'll have your complete forecast including what's in store for you for passover night and easter sunday. stick around, that's coming up. right now here's mike and your drive. >> we'll start with our look over my shoulder, headlines northbound 101 in san jose. i'm going to talk about the next shot 280 at 17, the reason i didn't start with that, it would be like a blank screen next to me. traffic is flowing very light, no flashing lights here. look at your map north 280 at 17, should be visible in that shot. we don't see any flashing lights

but a crash was reported at the transition, that transition is still open, though. also north 87 coming into downtown another crash just before you get the overcrossing there with 880 and the lanes sound like they're clear. i don't see a lot of slowing through the area. we'll track both activities in the south bay. the silicon valley moves smoothly despite the orange areas where the markers indicate where construction is approved but not necessarily going on. clearer drive all around the bay. another crash in fremont on the shoulder but i'll tell you what is going on for 808 coming up. back to you. >> thank you very much. a man is dead and police are look fog are a gunman in hayward. 292-year-old victim was found shot in the chest on jefferson street just off mission boulevard. all of this happening 9:45 last night. emergency crews tried to save him but the man died on scene. at this point police have not released any information regarding a suspect. a late night fire turned deadly in san francisco, happened just after 10:00 last

night at a home on columbus avenue in the north beach neighborhood. investigators say one man died in that fire and there's no word on the cause yet. arson investigators have been called to the scene which is standard until they can pinpoint the cause. the san francisco police department could fire some of the officers linked to those racist and homophobic text messages. police chief greg suhr says the results of the investigation into the text messages will be released later today. he didn't elaborate but suhr said he'll recommend several officers be fired and others suspended. the texts came to light last month during a federal corruption investigation into a former sfpd officer. the chief is expected to answer questions about a dna crime lab audit where a lab tech is acc e accused of altering some evidence. this morning a homeless man is in the hospital with a serious head injury and police are looking for his attacker. the assault was caught on camera. we're not going to show you the

actual attack but we will show you surveillance video leading up to it. you can see a man approaching the victims there and he hits him with what appears to be a pipe. the homeless man was knocked unconscious. he's a familiar face in the neighborhood, people know him as robert. we talked with a friend who just visited him in the hospital. >> we would take him to the shelter, we would get him food when he needed it, and we we'd buy him some shoes. >> friends say robert is now conscious. police hope someone recognizes the attacker in that video. if he is caught, he could face attempted murder charges. the two brothers accused of a brutal attack at levi's stadium expected back in court today. that attack inside the men's bathroom caught on a cell phone camera. this happened back in october. witnesses describe that violence as unprovoked and one of the victims was critically injured. also expected back in court today three former san jose state students tied to an alleged hate crime. the three men along with a

fourth student, prosecutors say, who was a juvenile taunted their black roommate in their college dorm during the fall of 2013. the taunting allegedly included hanging a confederate flag and putting a bike lock over his neck. the saga sparked outrage on campus. today's hearing, though, is mostly procedural. a resolution is expected today in another unusual south bay legal case, involving a disgraced former santa clara county supervisor george scherkauer jr. he's expected to be sentenced in a phony election mailer, he sent it to help his former aide win a city council seat. the let ear tacked another candidate. shirakawa pleaded no contest. he's not expected to get jail time but community service instead. he already served seven months in a separate corruption case. what has been a very heavy week, some uplifting news now. tens of thousands of dollars

raised for the family of a fallen san jose police officer, people packed two san jose bars well into this morning, donating money to the family of officer michael johnson. the johnson's father and family were at the britannia in the almond valley location and the one in downtown san jose, promised 100% of its proceeds yesterday to johnson's family. we're going to get a better idea of how much money was raised later this morning but we do know they exceeded their goal of $25,000. community members say they just wanted to help out. >> i was more than happy to work. i asked if i could come in early and stay late. >> britannia arms it's a nice thing they're doing for the johnson family and the community. >> the pub in downtown san jose held a silent auction with items signed by the sharks players. local taxi drivers also donated their time in johnson's honor. those drivers for san jose taxi sat outside of both locations to take pub patrons home for free.

finally some new video in to our newsroom this morning, san jose's city hall and it lit up in blue in johnson's honor. kris? >> if there's anything you want to say, you love him or miss him, say it out loud and let's rock this place. >> earlier in the day more than 8,000 people gathered at s.a.p. center in san jose to remember officer johnson. among the speakers his sister jamie, who shared some humorous childhood stories. >> whenever mike and i played cops and robbers at kids he always insisted on being the cops and i always had to be the bad guy. that turned out to be fortuitous, not just because he grew up to become a cop, but i grew up to become a lawyer. >> nice little moment of levity there. johnson was married, he and his wife, nikki, we had in a several service and planning a formal wedding for this summer. watch more touching speeches and tributes to officer johnson on our website nbcbayarea.com. and now we want to get a

look at our forecast. it was a beautiful day for such a moving tribute yesterday, but we know there's a change coming, christina? >> yes, we have rain on the way. good morning to you, kris, sam, everybody at home. temperatures are pretty chilly out there, cold enough to warrant a frost advisory in the north bay valleys and this will stand until 8:00 a.m., with temperatures near freezing, and that's really a concern for all the new budlings out there now that we're in spring. unseasonably warm finish later on today. 27 degrees on the peninsula, 67 for san francisco and 76 degrees in the tri valley. more on that rain as we get into the next report. i can tell you right now we're actually looking at an opening of this storm window. i want to check your drive, here's mike. >> folks look over here. i just lined the camera up for fremont and right there waiting for us, for some flashing lights. chp says there's a crash southbound 880 right around that sign for the auto mall parkway on your left and the truck scales on the right north of

tesla. we always look at this. that's over on the shoulder completely clear. the one i marked on the map is northbound at mallory over on the shoulder, no lanes blocked and no slowing past the scene nor was there any slowing on the earlier scene. they're both out there right now as you travel in either direction through fremont. if you headed south of there, looking at the south bay and the earlier crash north 87 it was right around taylor, it did just clear all lanes and so there's activity on your shoulder, also the blue icon, the mega phone, shouting out that the sharks are playing tonight at 7:00 after work and as you get toward your weekend hopefully a celebration. we always want one of those at the tank. smooth traffic the silicon valley moves smoothly, orange indicating construction crews, same thing into the city. no slowing east 24 getting away from that bay bridge, that's good stuff. the shot here the map shows you smooth sensors through san rafael. the live shot the same thing an easy drive southbound the

at tera linda. it's friday light because of good friday and spring break. vta will stoplight rail service in the mountain view area tonight through monday morning. crews need time to add a new track crossover to accommodate trains running during large events at levi's stadium. the mountain view station also shut down starting at 8:00 tonight. weekend b.a.r.t. riders in the east bay will have an extra hurdle in the next couple of months starting sunday, b.a.r.t. is shutting down service between the coliseum and the food rail system to replace the railway in between. the weekend closure also continue all the way through summer. buses will run between the two stations so you can get where you're going and b.a.r.t. is trying to keep trains running for the oakland a's home games but delays are expected to add more than 30 minutes to most trips. >> plan accordingly. 4:40. back home safe, this after being lost at sea for 66 days. we'll hear from the sailor who

just about a quarter to 5:00 right now and 147 people are now confirmed dead in a brutal and methodical terror attack at a kenyan university. kenya's interior minister says most of those killed were students. al shabab gunmen stormed the gates of the college and went from dorm to dorm as students slept and apparently they targeted non-muslims. four attackers also died. al shabab is a terror group based in neighboring somalia. >> heartbreaking. the newly found german wings flight data recorder is revealing new and twisted clues about what the co-pilot did when he crashed his plane into the french alps.

andreas lubitz used the automatic pilot to set the plane into descent and repeatedly sped up the plane on its way down. the crash killed all 150 people on board. lubitz researched suicide methods and cockpit door security in the days leading up to the crash. a framework is now in place but the question is, will it stick? two days late, there's now a deal on the table to keep iran from building a nuclear weapon. iran agreed to no weapons grade uranium or 15 years and full access for u.n. inspectors. in exchange, iran gets economic sanctions lifted, but before that deal gets done, congress has to approve and some are calling that an uphill battle. >> these terms are very bad and dangerous proposal for the united states. they put iran on a path to a nuclear weapon. >> israel calls the agreement an historic mistake but if it all sides sign off the deal may happen as early as this summer.

new video of good friday observations in jerusalem. christianity, good friday marks the day that jesus christ was crucified, traditionally a day of fasting and one of penance. today is also a religious holiday for jewish families, too, passover begins at sunset. it's celebrated to remember the exodus of jewish people from slavery in ancient egypt. an amazing survival story off the seas, the seas off of the carolinas, where a sailor was rescued after spending 66 days on his overturned boat. >> more than two months. cameras were rolling when the rescued sailor walked on dry land for the first time since late january. his family didn't know where he was. that's when louis ridley's sailboat capsized. crews eventually gave up the search and called him missing at sea but he survived on rainwater, raw fish, and the rations he could salvage. >> i feel blessed and i feel full of love and grateful to be with my family and with people again. >> that sailor was first located

as we get into this afternoon, spring warmth one more day, cloudy and much cooler for your saturday, and then showers arrive, easter sunday, and right now it looks like up in the north bay, you'll be dealing with some of those showers in the morning showers so do keep that in mind as well if you're trying to plan that easter egg hunt. we'll kick open that storm window starting sunday, showers on the way for monday into tuesday and we could measure over an inch of rain over the course of the three days so let me start this for you. we stop that clock at 10:00 a.m., showers pushing in over the peninsula and up into the north bay, but still mostly dry at that point in san jose, showers will continue to work their way south as we head throughout sunday afternoon, and then by monday at 10:00 p.m., we get a heavier wave of moisture. i stop that clock for you at 8:00 a.m. on tuesday and take a look at this, actually expecting some good looking shower activity, moderate to even heavy rainfall right here in the south bay, as we meet back here on tuesday morning. so this storm looks good, that will continue until about 5:00

p.m. on tuesday and we also have another chance for showers at the end of next week, so things are looking good for us when it comes to our rain chances. i can't wait to tell you all about this total lunar eclipse that will take place, the blood moon is back as we get into your we'll tell you where you can view this and how the weather will hold up if you want to look at it. couple of things to note about this specific blood moon as well, all going to come in your forecast as we get into the next hour together. right now back to you, sam and kris. >> a fiery looking moon there. we look forward to the details, thank you. a pair of burglars could have pulled off the absolute perfect heist except for one thing, they didn't know how to get the car to drive out of the driveway. it was all caught on camera, in front of a bay area politician's house. state school superintendent tom tolickson's wife shoeld us surveillance video from their house in pittsburgh, shows two guys jumping out of a corvette, a fast car to get away but smashed it into a pole and a mailbox in front of the house.

the man who put together all three world series winning giants teams or at least managed them is expected to stick around for a few more years to come. the giants are going to announce today the general manager brian sabean agreed to a two-year contract extension. saben will get a new title, we're not sure what that title is yet. also extending his contract for another two years, there is the skipper, bruce bochy, the man who guided the giants to all three world series titles. the contracts will keep both men with the giants through 2018, let the good times roll. >> right. a big congratulations to the stanford men's basketball team this morning. the latest winners of the nit championship. >> the cardinal managed to rally in the final seconds of that game to win the entire tournament, beating miami 66-64. the cardinal also won the tournament back in 2012 as well, a nice consolation for not making the ncaa. >> not bad.

an amazing finish at oracle arena. extend the warriors win streak to 11 now. down three with less than a minute to play and klay thompson sinks the three to size things up. the suns take the lead again with four seconds to play, but that's when harrison barnes steps up, sinking in the second bucket of the game and the warriors take the win 107-106. >> they're on a roll by the way. >> it's exciting to watch. >> an extra perk for fans at oracle arena last night, now part of a tv pilot. >> an unnamed sitcom was filmed during halftime of the game with the fans cheering their heads off. no word yet on what the show is but we're hearing it's a budding comedy or a buddy comedy, one of the two. >> yes. >> a budding buddiship. >> budding or buddy. here's my buddy and yours, mike inouye. >> can i be like the whacky neighbor that comes in? hey there, everybody. whacky buddy, actually, that was a game in the '70s.
