thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm sam brock. we start with a live look outside what we would call the quad boxes. we're monitoring weather conditions in all areas of the bay area, from the golden gate bridge to fremont to palo alto, it's all wet. meteorologist christina loren joining us. >> good morning to you. want to show you right now where the main cold front is. you can see that identified by the orange, red and yellow. that's heavy rainfall. mostly working its way through the south bay and the east bay at this point. you'll notice, we have had lightning firing off over the ocean this morning. we are fair game for thunderstorms over the bay area later on today. please travel cautiously wherever you're headed. want to take you live to the 17 summit. you can see this area getting moderate to heavy downpours. bob, you were out there for that historic storm in december. i know this one doesn't really

add up in comparison, but, still, dangerous out there for commuters this morning. >> right now we're in a little lull. it's not raining as hard as it was. you can't see my breath right now, but at moments, you can. it's chilly. if you're headed out to work, you must drive, i want to be careful out there. chp would remind you, you do not want to tailgate even though the speed limit might be, let's say, 50 miles an hour, you might have to go slower than that. you want to got safest speed possible. you're looking at headlights heading northbound on highway 17 into los gatos into the silicon valley where speeds are at the limit right now. again, we're not seeing the heavy downpour we saw earlier. but again, if you're going to be out there this morning on the roads, chp would advise you to watch those speeds. keep in mind, those roads could

be oily. it's been a few months since we've had a good rain. christina. >> thank you, bob. yeah, thanks for being out there for us this morning. if you drive past him, don't kick up that water, please. he's in one of those moderate batches right now. there will be more heavy rainfall on the way to the area as we head throughout the morning. he did point out that it is cold out there. it's actually cold enough for snow on top of mt. hamilton. we're watching for you for that this morning. you'll also notice the wind is coming up from the south. if you're taking the golden gate bridge headed southbound, the wind will be right in your face this morning. please take it easy out there. wind picks up. then it kind of dies down. it's what we call very gusty wind. take it easy. we'll check on your drive right now here's anthony slaughter. >> thank you. in fact, we have a slew of accidents coming through the emeryville area. i want to start you off with this shot from the 80 east shore freeway. you can see lots of cars here, very slow. we switch over to the map and you can see what i'm talking about. not only do we have one accident

but we have three all the way past hercules. all of these are spinouts so be cautious as you move through the area. very slow going 80 westbound approaching the bay bridge. the other area we're watching is mission boulevard. we have the yellow and red. there was a big rig that jack knifed so only one lane was getting through here so that's creating big slow downs. a sig alert this morning around 3:00 this morning right past the airport on 101 northbound at 87 connecter. that's clear now. but now on 87 there's another accident and also 101 at 82. things continue to pile up. it's all because of the rain. take it easy out there and go slow. back to you. >> the chp reminding folks to slow down and make sure you get there alive. as christina mentioned, that storm hitting the bay area right now is packing some strong winds with it. >> nbc4's stephanie chuang is

live in foster city. a warning for drivers headed across the bridge. we can see it's whipping you around as well. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. we could feel it as we were driving south from san francisco down to foster city. it's especially true when you're headed on one of the bridges. we're standing near the san mateo bridge. they have issued wind advisories for this bridge, dumbarton, richmond and san rafael. the rain coupled with the wind making it very dangerous. we drove on south bound 101 in san francisco where the water  was pooling in the far right lane, creating big splashes. it does impair your vision. watch out for problem spots where the drains, the storm drains are clogged. per chp's log in the last hour there have been almost maybe now ten collisions in the last hour. that number continues to grow. you've heard anthony talk about the problems around the bay

area. slow down while you're out there. leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the next one. one more note, you can see back here live that the rain has let up a little bit since our last report half an hour ago. the wind, though, is still in effect and it's much colder than what we experienced back in december when there was a storm watch then. reporting live in foster city, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." we are going to continue to track the storm for you all morning long. christina loren watching the radar, anthony slaughter keeping an eye on the roadways and we're looking out the windows. the search is auon for a ma who robbed a walgreens at gun point. officers say this man jumped over the counter at the walgreens near the san francisco golf club last week. the man took off with about 20 bottles of prescription

narcotics. a san francisco police officer is recovering from a stab officer. he works as a school security officer. he tells the news he and a partner broke up a group of men who were drinking and smoking at branham high school. one of the men started to argue with the retired officer and punched him and stabbed him in the back. copper thieves causing headaches for morning commute. meter lights from highway 17 to northbound 85 have been out for months. acco abecause thieves stole the copper wiring to power those lights. caltrans started using -- putting cameras at some locations to catch the crooks. there's still a backlog of repair jobs. bay area air quality leaders will get another round of feedback on the idea they have to ban all wood-burning fireplaces.

they are considering banning wood burning fireplaces from all new homes and also homes up for sale. homeowners would have to convert wood fireplaces to gas ones in order to rent or sell. the air quality management district is hosting meetings in all nine bay area counties this month. tonight's meeting is in napa. >> that could cost you a pretty penny as well. meteorologist christina loren with your microclimate alert on what's already been a very wet morning, especially in the south bay. >> a lot of rain has come through while you were likely sleeping overnight. you can see right now, the main cold front is pushing into the south bay. this is where it's going to stay put as we head throughout the next three or so hours. we are also seeing quite a few lightning strikes offshore. as we head throughout the day today, especially between the hours of 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., we're fair game for thunderstorms rolling through the bay area. this storm has a lot of instability associated with it. that's why we're also getting that fierce wind in combination

with that heavy rain. san jose in the red. that's heavy rainfall. areas of ponding, puddles out there. i'm going to give you an updated tally as to how much rain we've already accumulated coming up in moments. right now i want to talk about the wind and what you can expect from this storm for the remainder of the day. right now winds pretty strong, anywhere between 10 to 15 miles an hour sustained generally for the bay area. as we head throughout the next couple of hours, that rain will be heaviest from now until 7 a.m. when it comes to the wind, this is what we're expecting. strongest in east and south bay hills, higher elevations and the coast where you don't have the same friction, less friction than what we have over your valleys. sustained winds, 20 to 30 miles an hour gusting to 40 miles per hour from time to time. that's enough to knock you around a little bit if you drive a high-profile vehicle. then we have that risk for thunderstorms as we head throughout the day today into

tonight. we could see pea-sized hail, frequent downpours and gusty wind, maybe up to 60 miles an hour if those storms get strong. we're watching that for you. we're not going to leave our weather center unmanned. whenever we have the risk of thunderstorms in the bay area, we like to keep you up-to-date. 58 degrees in the tri-valley. grab your jacket, grab your umbrella because even though the heavy stuff is moving through right now, we're still going to see pockets of moderate to heavy rain as we head throughout date. i'll show you your futurecast in my next report. right now, let's get you updated on the drive. already a series of accidents. here's anthony slaughter with the latest. >> i want to start you off in the north bay. we've had several reports of roadway flooding on 101 coming from san rafael into the city. traffic not all that heavy right now. as we switch to the maps you can see what i'm talking about. this is past francis drake boulevard where we have a couple spots of seeing flooding. 80 westbound approaching the bay

bridge. several spinouts near hercules and el cerrito. as you make your way to the bay bridge, things lessen up since there's not that much traffic out there right now. the other place we're concerned about, away from the flow of traffic, 680 northbound at north mission boulevard. there was a big rig that jack knifed. only one lane was getting by. we will have footage from this accident coming up during our live broadcast. as we move towards the pass, you can see 580 moving pretty good considering we're looking at rain falling there. we'll show you the camera outside. you can see for yourself, lots of cars out there. the good news, we don't have any accidents coming through the thoroughfare. keep in mind, go slow and continue to pay attention to the folks in front of you. >> give yourself a nice buffer to stop. >> yes. we're getting a better idea of when the new ramp at 280/880 interchange in san jose will open. according to mercury news, the flyover ramp connecting

northbound 280 to northbound 880 will open up this friday. that interchange was initially set to open in time for this morning's commute. but crews had to push back the date in order to finish up some work. the new interchange will make it easier for drivers to get onto 880 without running into all that traffic headed to the valley fair mall. >> and there's a lot of traffic headed to that mall. it's 5:11 now. the bay area tech company teaming up with the president to help battle climbed change coming up next. and the race to raise wages. we'll take a look in business news.

welcome back. coming up on 5:14 on your tuesday, as you see our live doppler radar there, christina busy tracking rain this morning, especially coming through the south bay right now. the heaviest areas out lined in yellow there. we'll have more from her coming up momentarily. forensic teams in iraq are starting the grim task of exhuming hundreds of soldiers buried in mass graves. relatives yesterday gathered at one of the eight grave sites discovered last week in tikrit. iraqi forces recently liberated that city. last summer isis militants captured some 1700 soldiers, trying to vacate an air base. the group later posted videos purporting to show their mass killings. google is teaming up with the white house on climate change. today president obama will announce that google will donate 10 million hours of advanced computing time for new tools to measure climate change. that includes things like risk maps and early warning for

wildfires using google earth and using street view camera cars used to measure methane emission. president obama is urging americans to think of it as a threat to their health and not just the planet. domino's pizza might be the latest to raise pay for its workers. we've seen a string of these from walmart to mcdonald's. >> and target, too. the pressure is growing for companies to raise pay rates, raise workers above minimum wage. while you would expect shareholders and company boards would be resistant to this ideas, there's growing enthusiasm for it. now, this only applies to domino's-owned stores. most, unfortunately r franchises. starbucks says it will pay all the tuition for its employees' online courses through arizona state university. you can get a full four-year degree that way. starbucks' ceo says 144,000 current employees will qualify for free tuition. as we give credit to all these

companies jumping on the band wagon with benefits and pay, let's remember bay area jamba juice. they have routinely paid workers more than minimum wage. it was a pioneer. this days it may have to up its pay to catch up with the johnny-come-latelies. my first job was selling socks at jcpenney. $3.35 an hour, at the time was minimum wage. landon, let's turn to her, former hardware store employee live at cnbc headquarters. good morning. >> good morning. did that shock you? are you still working although my dad's hardware store. >> did you get paid because it was your dad's hardware store. >> it was my dad's. he did not increase my pay at all, ever. i think i stayed around $5 the entire time. but i'm still working on him. let's see what's going on on wall street. looking to gain to monday's

gains as futures are pointing to a higher open. stocks rallied as investors shrugged off friday's low report. dow closing after 117 points at 1788 on. nasdaq rising to 4817. back over to you. >> thank you. we expect republican rand paul to announce his candidacy for president today. i bring this up because paul is a frequent critic of the federal reserve. he says he thinks the fed need to be audited. most economists point out the fed's books are already open. paul is a libertarian as do several high-tech ceos as well. so, we'll watch that one. >> this also might have been the most telegraphed candidacy of all the gop candidates. no surprise here. >> i imagine mrs. clinton will be the most telegraphed for the democrats. >> safe to say. thanks very much. >> meteorologist christina loren

is here with the microcast. >> if and when. if she does. yeah, if you're headed out and about, radar in full effect this morning. let's take it live and show you what you can expect. that is not only some pockets of light to heavy rainy where between, i say, san jose south to gilroy right now. that's where we're getting the heavy stuff. we also have some thunderstorms. we'll be watching that later as we head throughout the day today. i want to show you what's happening in the south bay. that heavy rainfall rolling through. we have gusty winds out there as well. i can tell you, this is not the biggest storm to ever hit the bay area. nonetheless, we to want make sure you and your loved ones get to work safely this morning. heaviest rain, strongest in the south bay as we head throughout the next couple hours, that's the case. after 7 a.m., things will improve. we are expecting a few thunderstorms later on today. that could provide some hail,

some brief heavy downpours and even gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour if any of those cells get strong. chilly conditions overnight. let me take you through your futurecast. we start that clock for you at 1 p.m. today. you can see everything lightens up. we'll still have pockets of heavy, even moderate rainfall at that point. storm system starts to push over tahoe by 7 p.m. tonight. hopefully providing 1 to 2 feet of snowfall. our resorts, many of them able to stay open for the next couple of weeks. 7 p.m., mostly dry over the bay area but still have lingering activity all the way through tomorrow morning. low level snow possible in the bay area. because this system is coming through during the coldest point of the day, i think we could pick up 3 to 6 inches of snowfall on top of mt. hamilton. your snow level right now is at about 5,000 feet. over the next couple of hours that will drop. all we have to do is hit the

snow level of 4,000 feet as we get into the coldest point of the day for snow on mt. hamilton. we haven't seen that for quite some time. getting into wednesday and thursday, things dry out. we start to warm up. then saturday into sunday we might see a little bit more rainfall with that jet stream just to our north. we just don't have any storms to ride that jet. you can think of it like a conveyor belt that transports those storm systems into the bay area. it will be on top of us. right now it doesn't look like we'll have any significant storms that could change. we'll keep you updated. let's check your drive with anthony slaughter. >> i want to start you off with this live pic from our photographer. 680 northbound at north mission boulevard. you can see the jack knifed tractor/trailer. only one lane is getting through here. the slow lane. this is, again, on 680 northbound right at north mission boulevard coming through. you can see, they have crews out there trying to clear this around. traffic is still trying to get around. so, it is creating a huge backup

on 680. let's show you what it looks like on the traffic maps. you can see for yourself, the good news, is that it's actually headed away from the flow of traffic today. if you're using 680 southbound, you're okay. northbound is where we're finding the slowing. actually not too bad once you get towards south mission, it starts to clear out. if you want to use 880 as an alternate route, that's your best bet. only one lane getting through. 580 westbound looking pretty good. 580 eastbound near dublin there was an accident at san ramone road and coming through 84 toward 680 is a little slow. 680 northbound the spot to watch out for this morning. in the south bay we had an earlier accident, 101 just past the airport. that was cleared. now another accident in the same spot. 101 northbound at 87 connecter. same deal for 87 and kurtner. and lots of accidents happening this morning because of the rain, the puddling on the roads. remember, the blue you see on the map here, that denotes

hydroplaning possible. everywhere across the bay virtually we're looking at puddling and ponding. take it easy, go slow. allow a little extra time for yourself out the door this morning. back to you. >> thank you very much. an alarming new study for women this morning. false-positive ma'mmograms cost the nation $4 million a year. they suggest a woman has breast cancer when she does not. the authors of the study say the costs are so high, screening may end up being relatively cost ineffective. the american cancer society recommends annual screenings for women beginning at the age of 40. the u.s. preventive services task force calls for screening every two years in women 50 to 74. it's 5:22. goldielocks, nowhere to be found in one neighborhood but that does not prevent a bear from making itself at home. >> this bear hit two homes during a weeknight raid south of

tampa. someone snapped a photo as proof. here it is. >> that's a bear. >> she says the 400-pound bear wandered through the house and went after her family's easter chocolate. >> i could have reached out and touched him. i said, there is a bear in the house. i am not joking. wake up right now. >> the kids said, mom. well, some serious pot banging did scare that bear away, for one day. it returned as a result, and then roamed to a neighbor's house. that bear is still on the loose. i can't blame the bear, easter candy is wonderful. >> bears prefer cadbury eggs. we're starting things off right. the world champion giants continue their winning ways, but one of the team's stars already hurt.

start. baseball season is officially under way and our bay area teams are undefeated. >> the giants go two in a row tonight in arizona. they're going for it. first pitch 6:40. last night it came down to the wire. but the giants managed to hold onto that lead and spoil the diamondbacks' home opener. final score, 5-4. after the game, giants' skipper bruce bochy said pitcher matt cain does not have ligament damage and his injury is most likely a two-week thing. he underwent an mri after feeling tightness in his forearm. he will miss tomorrow's scheduled start. no word on who will replace him. the a's, not so shabby themselves. >> won 8-0. great start to both bay area teams. this morning, soggy conditions outside. anthony watching your roadways and christina tracking the conditions. good morning. >> good morning to you. we're really excited about that home opener next monday, at&t park. of course, we are the proud broadcast home of your san francisco giants.

roadways but also wind. this is what it looked like outside at&t park just a few hours ago. you can see that even our cameras got a little dousing. meteorologist christina loren is tracking the storm moving over the bay area as we speak. we've been watching that radar and the red has not abated. >> it really hasn't moved much over the past couple hours. good point, kris. as a result, we do have areas of puddles, ponding out there that are accumulating as we speak. so, you really want to travel cautiously. we have a really good batch of rainfall located over the south bay. and just about ten minutes ago, lightning firing just offshore. we're fair game for these thunderstorms as we head throughout your afternoon today. want to show you what's happening right now over the summit of 17. you can see we're getting moderate rainfall, gusty wind as well. we want to check in live with bob out there. it looks like it's picked up where you are but you're a good sport out there in the rain. >> reporter: yeah, i could use

more rain. yeah, it is definitely picking up, certainly within the past 10 to 15 minutes. good morning to you. we've also had little gusts of wind here. nothing to move the car around on the road but certainly keep your eye on as you head into work this morning. you can see behind me, the headlights are headed northbound on highway 17 into los gatos, san jose and the rest of the santa clara valley. you can see very wet roads out here. speeds are at the limit. chp would tell you, even if the posted speed limit is 55, you want to go whatever the safe speed is given the driving conditions. 55 might not be the best speed limit for people out here this morning, concerning how wet the roads are. show you some video shot within the past half hour. northbound 680 at north mission boulevard. a big rig tractor/trailer jack knifed earlier this morning. not confirmed yet whether this

was weather-related but right now all lanes of northbound 680 are shut down expect for the slow lane. that's the far right lane. so, traffic is backed up in that part of the south bay. still waiting for an eta on when they can get that big rig trailer cleared off the scene. an image like that should remind you, you need to be careful out here on the we had roads this morning. if you have the option of working at home, from home, you might want to take advantage of that. >> bob redell, back to you. >> good call. 17 is danger outwithout that wet weather. take it easy out there. i want to get you updated to the status of the traffic alert with anthony slaughter. >> i want to start you off with what we're looking at across the bay bridge approach. this is the maze from the east bay, hercules, berkeley down toward emeryville. you can see all the accidents we're finding here. many of these are spinouts so

small accidents, but nonetheless creating a big slowdown. coming across the bridge, it's still raining. we have slow going there. in san francisco we have reports of roadway flooding at ninth street exit. along with that, a couple other accidents at 280 chavez and 101 past the 280 connecter. continue to drive slow out there. we'll continue to track the big rig crash on 680 northbound as you heard bob reporting, one lane getting through. 101 in foster city, san mateo at the connecter of 92, things slow. across the bay this morning, have you to go slow, take it easy. remember, it is raining heavy outside. not only are you dealing with the rain in your face, but you're dealing with the rain on the ground. that's really going to be where we're finding the big problems because of the oil out there. back to you. >> both hands on the wheel, that's for sure. >> all good points. as christina mentioned, too, lots of elements in play this morning. strong winds and heavy rain pounding the bay area right now. >> "today in the bay" stephanie

chuang live in foster city. a warning for drivers headed across bridges, no matter what part of the bay area those bridges are. >> no matter where you are. good morning. you heard the specifics from anthony on the various accidents across the bay area. the warning slow down and leave plenty of space between vehicles. in a 17-minute stretch, at least nine traffic collisions, one right after another. especially if you're headed across one of the bay bridges, like san mateo bridge, the chp issued a wind advisory for this bridge, as well as richmond-san rafael and dumbarton. rain is hitting parts of the bay area pretty hard. we were driving down southbound 101 in san francisco where the water was pooling on the far right lane. as you'd expect with the flooding, creates big splashes. in addition to making it tougher to actually drive through on the roadway, it's definitely going to impair your vision. so, watch out for those problem

spots. of course, this happens a lot where the storm drains have clogged. caltrans goes out and tries to fix that as soon as possible. again, be very slow and cautious in the meantime. back here live, the rain is pretty moderate, about the same as the last report about half an hour ago. the wind sometimes kicking up, pelting the rain in your face. as anthony mentioned, you're not only dealing with the water, the rain, but with the wet roadways. again, be safe out there. live in foster city, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. we'll track this storm all morning long. meteorologist christina loren is watching that radar. she's also going to give you an update on snowfall in the sierra. anthony slaughter keeping an eye on the roadway. both with live updates throughout the morning. stay with nbc bay area. you can stay with the forecast for your android or iphone for free. in other news and breaking news in santa clara, all northbound lanes of highway 101

are open once again this morning after a deadly crash shut those lanes down for hours overnight. it happened at the exit for delacruz boulevard north of the airport. this is what's left of one of those cars involved. the chp says a witness saw a pickup truck hit a stalled car on the shoulder on the freeway. that stalled car then caught fire and the person inside was trapped and died inside that car. the fire burned for more than an hour. the cause of the crash is now under investigation. the attack so vicious it could make your stomach churn. now the man accused of attacking a homeless man in san francisco last week will be in court later today. police believe arthur lee jones is the man seen in this security video swinging a metal pipe or bat at the homeless man, leaving the man with severe head injuries. witnesses told police the two got into an argument earlier and jones returned to attack the man. state attorney general harris is looking into apple's hiring and firing policies.

the company recently fired several construction workers over past felony convictions. they were hired to help build apple's new campus. union leaders did write a letter to apple ceo tim cook, urging him to reconsider. so far, no comment. the san jose city council will talk today about extending the life of its family cap at yosemite. city staffers will recommend the council negotiate with the u.s. forest service to extend that lease agreement. the current agreement expires at the end of next year. crews just finished rebuilding the family camp after the did he have staying rim fire back in 2013. that fire that charred hundreds of trees and destroyed more than a dozen cabins 37. my family was in yosemite not long ago. we saw the ravages of that fire and we're glad to see the rain now because maybe this will be a good thing for our fire season. >> yeah, prolonging it maybe by a couple more weeks because we're going to see enough moisture to keep our hillsides

nice and green. they were starting to turn brown but this is going to reinforce those green hillsides. we're talking about potentially an inch of rain here in the south bay. that's great news. also expecting 1 to 2 feet of snowfall up in tahoe. and because this is a cold system, we are going to see snowfall at lake levels. so just under 4,000 feet for tahoe. we might even get snow over mt. hamilton. that will be visible by tomorrow. right now you can see the heavy rainfall working its way through the south bay. this is actually slowing down. this front was picking up speed overnight. at this point it has slowed. that means it's going to sit and dump that moderate to heavy rainfall all the way from san jose south to morgan hill. that, of course, does make sure that we are going to see more puddles ponding. that's how we get those accumulations. that's what causes flooding because our roads aren't equipped to receive these kinds of rain rates. take it easy out there. an thoeb has been talking about

a series of crashes so far this morning. 17 looking downright dangerous at this point. you really want to hold onto your steering wheel tight, stay alert this morning, because in addition to the heavy rainfall we're getting that fierce wind. we do want to check on that traffic alert, the status. jack knifed big rig out there. here's anthony slaughter. >> of course, 680 northbound coming through sanole. it will continue to remain slow back to mission boulevard. north of mission, it starts to clear out. the good news, if there is any, the traffic flow we're finding headed northbound direction and usually impacts the traffic if you're headed southbound. the other thing we're finding on 580, it's starting to slow. we had an accident eastbound away from the traffic flow. now another one happened at the 680 connecter. also this is what we've been

rand paul makes a big announcement today. he is expected to become the second republican to officially enter the 2016 presidential race. "today in the bay's" tracy po"' potts is live with how this news is expected to be received. >> reporter: good morning. rand paul calls himself a different kind of republican. how different? we'll find out later today. but he's already put some hints out there in this youtube video announcing his announcement. and also in some of the places, he's drawing young people, drawing minorities, urging the party to diversify but can he draw the republican party base while holding onto his libertarian base. so, today's announcement is in ken, his home state, then new

hampshire, south carolina, iowa, nevada, some of the early primary and caucus states to continue campaigning from there. the latest quinnipiac poll in some key states show him very close, within striking distance, of hillary clinton, who by the way is also expected to be announcing very soon. >> thank you very much. in addition to having a campaign office in austin, paul will also open one in san francisco. the kentucky senator is wooing silicon valley executives, hoping to cash in on some of that big tech money. some experts believe silicon valley's millionaires will be the ones to help one candidate into the white house. meantime, staying on capitol hill, u.s. senator john mccain says he's running for re-election. the arizona republican will seek his sixth term in office in 2016. mccain will be 80 years old by election day, but he tells nbc news, his senate career is just beginning. mccain is the chairman of the senate armed services committee.

state water leaders will discuss how best to keep communities in line with water reduction plans. the problem, though, is how to enforce the mandatory 25% water cuts issued by governor jerry brown last week. especially for the largest water wasters. cities will likely receive conservation targets based on the amount of water residents already use. one bit of respite right now. we're getting another storm moving into our area. it's triggering some memories of the last big storms we had in december. hardware stores in marin county say they've seen an uptick in sales as people gear up for the most significant rainfall in months up. may remember all of that flooding that happened back in december. people are hoping that this storm brings plenty of rain without the flooding. >> a lot of additional rain boots, a lot of plastic, tarps. >> i bought this for a project i'm doing tomorrow but i'm just praying for rain tonight because we need it.

>> video from last night showing how much the wind had already picked up. it's expected to continue throughout the morning. >> our local hardware stores that has a sale that says, put a blue tarp on it because a lot of projects don't get done in time when storms roll in like this. >> in the drought, i think people find it more hard to believe when we call these storms out because they think, oh, we're not going to get that much. then a system like this rolls through. it is nothing like the system that came through in december. one of the only similaritities is that it's coming through in your morning drive. please take it very cautiously out there this morning. anthony is already tracking a series of crashes. and a big one, as a matter of fact. we'll get to the traffic alert in a moment. want to talk about where we're noticing the heaviest rainfall. 101 is lit up like a christmas tree from gilroy to morgan hill with this orange and red, even yellow. that's heavy rainfall that is basically stayed stationary over the past half hour or two hours.

you really want to travel cautiously. we are starting to get a break. up in santa rosa where we have already accumulated up to three-quarters of an inch in some spots just from this system. we also picked up 0.4 of an inch from the system that came through on easter sunday in parts of the bay area. so, it's actually a good story to tell over the past 72 hours. we need this rain and as you know, our window for rainy season in the bay area will come to a close as we get into the next couple of months. what you'll notice is the wind is rather fierce. the chance for downed trees is actually going to get better, so please take it easy, especially over 17, the summit there, if you're traveling that way to work. 21 miles an hour sustained in oakland. 15 miles an hour in concord. meanwhile, 17 in san francisco with gusts up to 40 miles an hour from time to time. if you're headed out and about for today, this is what you want to know about. the rain coming in as we head throughout the next couple of hours, it will be strongest and the main cold front will move out of the bay area.

keep your umbrella handy throughout the day today with pockets of light to moderate rainfall continuing throughout the day. we could see heavy downpours from time to time if we get any strong thunderstorms, which we are expecting. best chance looks like over the north bay mountains. we'll extend that through the tri-valley, the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains as well. and that could generate a little bit of hail as well. we're fair game for that today. things will calm down substantially overnight. we'll see a few residual showers. let me show you your future cast. we start the clock at 1 p.m. still getting pretty good rainfall in the south bay. most areas will see on and off precipitation north of the south bay through 7 p.m. tonight. all this moisture heads out of here right where we need it to go, over tahoe because it is a cold storm system, we're expecting 1 to 2 feet of snowfall in the sierra nevadas. that's great news as well. tomorrow morning, like i said, you can probably ditch that umbrella by 7 a.m. as that

residual activity starts to push out. we're talking about sunshine returning tomorrow afternoon. thursday into friday, a little warm-up for you. getting into this is weekend, our next chance for rain arrived only about 10 to 20%, it could get better. we'll watch that for you like a hawk. as promised, anthony slaughter with the latest on that traffic alert. >> 680 northbound we had a big rig jack knife earlier, about 4:42 this morning. 680 northbound at north mission boulevard. you can see only one lane is getting through. it looks like right now no lanes are actually getting through from this picture unless maybe this traffic is light. we'll be on top of this all morning long. if this is your route, 680 northbound, you want to use 880 this morning. you can even see coming the opposite direction, how slow it is because folks want to see what's happening. as we switch to the maps, you can see what we're talking about. the slow -- the opposite direction no accident on 680

southbound but folks want to see what's happening and that's kraeding slowing. 84 is stop and go. the south bay ponding on the road coming off 17. we've had reports of hydroplaning, especially once you hit the base of the summit once you get down towards campbell. keep in mind on 87 northbound, 280 and also on 101 at the 87 connecter, a slew of accidents starting to stack up. continue to take it easy out there. we'll watch it very closely this morning. >> thank you very much. 5:50 on your tuesday morning. a former 49er and raid ler soon have his day in court. harris is accused of driving under the influence, hit and run and resisting arrest. politician say harris was careening through the streets of san francisco before he passed out in his car. when authorities caught up to him, the car was still running. and when he came to, harris did not cooperate.

>> the suspect then tried to bite the officer's hand. thankfully the officer was not bitten. >> police arrested harris. he left football back in 2008, but he hit a low point in 2013. this mug shot was from a domestic abuse arrest for beating up his then-boyfriend over an argument involving soy sauce. city leaders got an earful with people upset about seemingly endless problems of crime and homelessnesses. about 50 people attended the meeting with san jose city and santa claire county officials. some say they are fed up with crime in their neighborhoods. others, though, wanted better streetlig lighting, more patrol. officials discussed solutions, but residents came away wanting more. >> we didn't hear all the businesses that leave downtown because they don't feel they're safe anymore. and that becomes an issue. >> the other thing we'll do in the interim is take a look at all the suggestions that were made and make sure that we're gleaning out of them the
