deerhead, kansas. you can see obviously the funnel cloud. you see that raiow there. unbelievable video from a more rural area from southern kansas right on the border of oklahoma. so there were no damage reports because it was obviously in rural area. now in missouri, we saw more hail than anything else. we have reports of hail two to three inches in diameter, winds gusting 60 to 70 miles an hour toppling trees, power lines, tearing the buildings. we also had a lot of reports to damage to vehicles because of the hail, baseball and grapefruit size hail. missouri is famous for getting giant hail storms. you can even see golfball size hail. imagine that falling fro sky. unfortunately, we are looking at the same setup again today. we got this really warm somewhat humid air, 60s and 70s ahead of this front. behind it, it's in the 30s and 40s. it's that clash that's producing those stronger storms. we are going to see them fire up today.

this morning we have your run of the mill thunderstorms. heavy downpour ss frequent cloud-to-groun around st. louis. now, chicago is in the 40s right now. it's going to be in the 70s later on this afternoon increase the threat of s weather. look at this, from texas all the way up into parts of west virginia. that's where we are going to see widespread thunderstorms. it's in this air a yeah of orange where with we could see more tornado winds in excess of 70 miles an hour. tomorrow that threat will shift further to the east. thunderstorms from texas into central new jersey. however, we will lose the threat of tornadoes tom today we certainly have to k an e >> a little piece of g in the future. >> it gets better, yes. >> thank you very much. in other news, outrage is growing in that deadly shooting of an unarmed black man by an a white police officer in south carolina. in a moment we'll talk exclusively to the man who cap capt

first, nbc's gabe gutierrez has the latest on the case. good morning to you. >> reporter: investigators could release dash cam video. meanwhile, the was er involved in that dead areally incident has been fired. city officials say they now plan to arm every officer on the street with body cameras. this morning we are hearing from santana. >> i took my phone out. >> reporter: the man many are calling a hero for recording the deadly encounter that' seen by millions. the initial police report said walter scott took officer michael slager's taser. he grabbed my taser. santana told lester holt. >> i believe he wanted to get away of the taser. like i said, he never used the taser against the cop. >> reporter: right now, there are two main questions police haven't answered. slager retrieved an obje

fell to the ground. it's not clear whether it's his taser and appears to drop the object next to scott's body. also not clear, why the video doesn't show officers performing cpr when the initial police report said they had. >> there are questions i have in my mind that i can't answer right now. >> reporter: scott's family is thankful the video became public, even though it's so hard to watch. >> it was too heart breaking. i wouldn't want that to happen to anybody. >> reporter: now charged with murder, we are learning more about officer slager on the north charleston pol for six years, his wife eight months pregnant. personnel record show there was a complaint against him if 2013 for improper use of force with a taser involving a black man, but officer slager was exonerated. >> what do we want? when do we want it? now. >> reporter: this shooting now reigniting a national debate about the use of dead lily force.

>> they shot him down like dog. >> that can't happen in 2015. >> reporter: officer slager has not yet entered a plea. he has just retained a new attorney who so far is declining to comment publicly at length. at least for now, matt. >> gabe gutierrez on the story. gabe, than santana who captured the video is with us now exclusively along with his attorney, todd rutherford. what have the last couple of days been like for you? >> oh, it's been something i never expected. you know, i say life's changed in a matter of seconds i have been a witness, this video and to record this and all this will happen. >> let's go back to saturday. you are walking to work. you are on the phone. you see the confrontation, excuse me, between officer slager and mr. scott. i believe you saw the officer on top of mr. scott and you heard the taser. what did it sound like?

>> the taser, it was just sounding like i say, he was using the taser with mr. scott. >> how did mr. scott react immediately following being tased? how did he rae act to that? >> before the video i saw that he was trying to get away from the taser and his reaction was, you know, to get away of the taser. >> was there a struggle over the taser that you saw? were they fighting over it? >> no, he never got the taser off the police. he never got the taser. >> you then put the phone up and you start to record after that moment and within seconds you record officer slager firing eight shots. >> yes. >> one minute you are walking to work. the next minute eight shots are fired. you must have been scared? >> yes, still, i'm still scared. >> you're still scared? >> yes. >> yet you maintain your composure enough to keep videotaping this?

>> yeah. >> when you saw walter scott fall to the ground, can you just describe your reaction? >> at that moment i didn't, it didn't really thought he was going to die or that he was dead. you know, never, maybe thought one bullet would catch him and he fell to the ground. i didn't know how many bullets he was catched by and, yeah, never thought of any of that, that he was dead. >> i want you to look at monitor here for second. there is a moment on your cell phone video, immediately after officer slager stops firing, it appears to me that he looks directly at you. i'm going to run the tape and just watch that instant. he fires the eight shots and then he looks right over. do you think he was looking at you?

>> yes, definitely. before like i record the video so maybe he felt that he can feel that someone is there. like i say, it was an empty spot. there were just the three of us in that moment. like i say i didn't, i couldn't tell what was going to happen, so i just want him to know that you know, that he's not by himself. >> you moved around and you got closer. there is one portion of the tape where you are pretty close to walter scott on the ground and the officers now, two of them are standing over mr. scott. did they say anything to you? did you say anything to them? >> i was saying in the video that it was an abuse what the police officer was doing, what he had done at that moment. the officer didn't say that right when i get close, he actually said to one of them

told me to just move from there. >> you eventually showed this tape to the scott family. i know you described that was a difficult thing for them to see. mr. rutherford, if he had not taken those images with his cell phone, this would be his word against officer slager's word. >> that's right. >> that video changes everything. >> the video changes everything and shows the importance of body cameras, thankfully they're now moving to other body cameras for all their officers. he's afraid. the first thing he said how can i get protection? there are other officers saying they performed cpr. he was there five minutes afterwards and he saw nobody did cpr. what does he do when the ones supposed to protect us turn against us. >> do you have an answer? what do you do? keep doing what you're doing, talking about this?

>> like i said, like i say to todd, i decide now to show my face to the media because like i say to him all my life have changed after this with this. now you know they say people know where i live, people know you know where i work. you know, so my normal routine from just walking from my house to the work, to work have changed. i said to him, i will have to like i say, at some point i thought about staying anonymous and don't show my face, don't talk about it, but there is something that have to go you know beyond that at this and like i say if i want to show my face, everybody over there knows including the police officers in the department knows who i am now. >> we appreciate you talking to us this morning. thank you very much. todd thank you very much as well. let's go over to savannah. thank you so much.

the penalty phase in the boston marathon bombing case could begin next week after dzhokhar tsarnaev faces conviction on every one of the 31 charges. now they will decide if he will be sentenced to life in prison or death. pete williams is in boston this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the jury reached that verdict after just 11 hours of deliberation. victims and family members crowded into the courtroom to hear it and to see the marathon bomber who showed no reaction. now that dzhokhar tsarnaev has been found guilty, he faces a second trial, to decide between life if prison without parole or death by lethal injection. wednesday's verdict guilty on every one of the 30 counts against him. for two bombings, two years ago near the finish line of the boston marathon that killed 8-year-old martin richard, lingzi lu and injured 200 plus us

more, guilty too for murdering police officer sean collier and carjacking a terrified businessman who escaped and pleaded for help, a part of a crime spree three nights later. no date now for the next trial. legal experts say his defense lawyers will benefit for several days delay. >> i would ask for as much time possible to from this moment to the sentencing phase to separate the jurors from the emotions of the trial. >> reporter: those emotions have bob been on the mind of heather abbott. shea wanted to eded to sea tsarnaev held accountable. >> i think he got guilty and the jury got it right. now he has to live with the consequences. >> reporter: in texas, bombing victim rebecca gregory says she will be back if boston for the final days. >> i do believe he should be held accountable. so whatever that is, i believe the true judgment comes after he dies, anyway, so it's really not

my judgment to make. and my heart goes out to the jury that has to make this decision. >> reporter: the jury has the rest of the week off. the penalty phase might start as early as next week, giving boston some time to absorb the verdict the city has been waiting for. matt. savannah. >> pete williams, thank you, those will be difficult days in the courtroom for sure. >> certainly. let's go to natalie. she has what appears to be another black eye for the secret service. >> here we go again. the department of homeland security inspector general now investigating a top agent who has been accused of sexual assault. nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning to you. according to a source familiar with the investigation, the secret service director placed a senior supervisors on leave and suspended his security clearance after a female employee accused him of making unwanted advances towards her last month.

the female employee complained about the alleged incident a week ago accusing morales, her boss, of grabbing her arm and asked to have sex with her after a work party on march 31st. now in a statement, director joseph clancy said quote any threats or violence that endangers our employees in the workplace is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. this is the latest setback for the agency after a series of embarrassments. most recently two secret agents allegedly drove a car near the scene of an investigation after a night of drinking. the department of homeland security and inspector general and d.c. police are investigating the latest incident. no comment yet for morales. natalie, back to you. >> kristen welker, thanks so much. >> some frightening moments on a flight from iceland to denver when a lightning strike blew a hole in the nose of the plane. take a look there. this happened shortly after takeoff. passengers on that iceland air flight say they heard a loud bang and pop.

scientology. >> reporter: according to police document powell said he was hired through an intermediary firm and had been following ronald miscav annual. they were to follow and photograph him wherever he went. he told police he put a gps tracking unit on his car. the police report says powell stated that david miscav annual is paranoid and afraid ex-members will discuss the inner workings of the church. nbc exclusively obtained audio to the police. >> i'm just supposed to report back what he does who he talks to. they want me to find people to make friends with him to lead him in a positive direction. >> reporter: in response the chur. of scientology ol says the entire premise of the report is an absolute bald-faced lie. it is preposterous. his attorney says mr. miscavige

never directed any statements to mr. powell. in a statement to police powell says there was an incident he saw him slumped over while grasping his cleft. powell says he contacted his intermediary and according to police report he was called two minutes later by a man who identified himself as david miscavige. he told him if it was ron's time to die, to let him die and not intervene in anyway. >> that story was repeated by powell's son, who was also interviewed by police. >> my dad got off the phone. he goes, i just got a call from david miscavige, don't intervene if he has a heart attack. the church says no conversation took place. it is unadulterated. he continues to take care of his father. now 79 to ronned a miscavige

helped authorities piece together saturday's events. tuesday, officer michael slager was charged with murder. >> do you have any questions for me sir? >>. >> reporter: over the past year video has been a catalyst for a nation wide change in police procedures. this follows the shooting death of michael brown in ferguson missouri. since then the following have surfaced cell phone videos of staten island police putting eric garner in a choke hold. germany died. under surveillance video in cleveland, ohio police killing tamir rice there were reports he had a gun. turns out he had a pellet gun. >> he got a gun, get out of the car. in this one also in south carolina where a straight trooper shot and wounded a man for reaching for his license. >> why did you shoot me? i just got my license. you said get my license.

>> reporter: soon all north carolina police will be out with body cameras. >> body cameras are absolutely necessary, not just in south carolina but nationwide you can expect to be treated better. >> reporter: other police departments have done the same. seattle pd even posts their videos to youtube. >> and my head goes the camera goes basically. >> when we get more and more video, what do you think that will mean going forward? >> i think better treatment for our minorities and our population so deserved by the police. better for people that feel like the police simply aren't there to protect them. >> reporter: with the advance in technology a hope nor more accountability and transparency. we heard from the white house yesterday, white house press secretary josh ernest saying president obama has seen the video of what happened here in north charleston. he went on to say this is another example of how body cameras would help strengthen

especially coming from peers that they believe i'm a good official and i'm here on merit. >> reporter: do you view this at all, though significant socially? >> i'm just out doing a job. i know it's meaningful to a lot of people and i'm honored for that. but that's not why i set out to do this. to break a gender barrier of any sorts. i just did it because i loved officiating. >> reporter: but the announcement comes after a challenging season for the nfl, following a number of high profile domestic violence cases involving its players. one current player spoke out this week saying image likely was a factor in the decision to hire thomas. there are some saying perhaps this is a publicity stunt. what do you make of that reaction? >> i have been an official for almost 20 years. this hasn't been an overnight sensation or a year. >> reporter: like most officials, thomas' work on game day comes in addition to her normal full-time job and a role at home as mother of three.

what was the reaction from the kids when mom got the call? >> their buddies a at school the two boys at school are getting a lot of pats on the back or whatever. i'm just mom to them. they understand what i go through. they're my biggest support. >> reporter: and they'll be counting down the days to kickoff there fall with a new reason to watch on sundays. what makes you the most nervous thinking about that first nfl game? >> i'm not nervous, willie. >> reporter: not at all? just excited? >> just making sure my fellow crew mates know i'm ready and the coaches and the players know i'm there to do a job as an official. >> you know she is all business guys. i told her before the interview, i'm a giants' fan, if there is anything you can do. not a smile. the baltimore ravens coach said we had her last year in a few pre-season games, she's one of the best at what she does. >> i love when she says i'm not

girl," he really came from my heart. that was a time when i was most confused. i think you have no life experience to give a voice to those children you are not alone, i hear you. you are not invisible. i love my family i didn't know where it was coming. >> it's clear you love your parents. you adore them very much but your growing up was fought easy. >> well it wasn't. py family god love them. they were wonderful. but they were self medicating pain and a lack an inability to communicate. so there was a lot of fighting. there was a lot of drinking. there was a lot of and i kind of chose to be the clean-up girl him i was going to fix everything. i was going to make everything okay. i think there is a lot of people not only young girls, but people

that can relate to that role that i wanted to play. i wanted to be perfect. i wanted to make things okay. i was the one in the family that was going to change everything and then you know it's been a journey of discovering that you know i'm my best teacher and guru and you know whatever it is it lies within me. so. >> you have conquered some of the cycles that you were very open about your family going through substance abuse, that kind of thing. you've got two girls now. how did you kind of get through your dramatic parts of your growing up and find this place of peace? >> that's why i wrote these books is because i really think that telling your story is the first piece in being able to recover and heal. so if we -- you know if i, mariel hemingway, who has this and we think has no problems and can tell her story, then might be it gives invitation to somebody else to be able to them theirs and really bring light to

a subject that people don't want to talk about. so it's ending stigma. you know because there is still, we still criminal him at the idea that we come from not perfect families and so you know, i really think that so many of us have these problems. in regard to my daughters, i absolutely love them and i want other girls and boys to know that they are loved and seen and even if it's not their parents, they do love you, but, you know maybe you need somebody else to listen. >> it's interesting because the book is called the young adult version is called "invisible girl." you just said a moment ago, you want young people to feel seen. why do you think that was the particular way you felt as a child that somehow you weren't noticed or weren't seen by your parents? >> you know i think in a lot of ways i found out early on i was a mistake. not that they didn't love me but you know it came out as you are listening, you hear your parents >> unplanned pregnancy. >> yeah.

>> and when you feel that, you know you have to be so careful as a parent to really be careful about what you say and what you do behind closed doors because kids know. kids know what's going on and i felt invisible in the sense that because i wanted my family, because my sisters were, you know, rebellious. one was into drugs and alcohol the other one was into alcohol and she was, you know, troubled. both of them were difficult for my parents so i think that i felt like, hey, i'm here, you know, and having chosen to be the perfect one, i felt unseen. >> you also talk about your young days in hollywood. you got good tales in there about literally being chased around a casting couch by one director. >> that was interesting. >> there's a story you have in there about woody allen. of course, you were in manhattan. what happened there? >> to be quite honest, woody allen treated me wonderful. i played his girlfriend.

time for our ongoing series running for today. leading up to fitness shape, a woman's half marathon here in new york city. >> which is going to be cool. natalie is co-hosting this weekend with erica hill. you have a good story. >> a good family story. the park family in north carolina boasts three generations of runners. they go to one tough grandma who refuses to quit. rachel park runs because running is in her blood. her father dave is a runner. and so is her grandmother anne. in fact at the age of 75 anne is the inspiration for what's become a family tradition. a running road show that spans at least eight states. this trio runs marathons as a family. this month marking their tenth race together. that's a collective 786 miles. it mulligan when anne was in her early 50s. a friend encouraged her to run

her first quarter mile. >> only my own stubbornness and pig headedness kept me from quitting. i wanted to quit so bad i was dying. i did get around once. then i got hooked. somehow it just got in my blood. >> reporter: anne ran her first marathon at the age of 58. 23 would follow. >> there is no one in my age group usually anymore now i'm 75. >> rachel was watching. not long after she learned to walk she was running. >> the first time i ever ran with her, i was 5. >> reporter: the bond was forged and grew over time. for the parks, the years went by like mile markers, with family photos full of bid numbers. five years ago, dave joined them. >> it was tough, i'm a relatively young guy, so that really impressed me about my mom's accomplishments more. >> people find out, oh you run marathons, who do you run with? i say my grandma, at first they're surprised i run

marathons then they're surprised i'm running because of my grandma, it's amazing how she inspires me and others too. >> reporter: anne's determination comes from the commitment to herself. >> i grew up in the age where women were not athletes. we only ran half court in basketball. they didn't want us to run any farther. we might not be able to have babies if we ran too much. that's what i grew up with. i want to prove to myself i can do it. >> another tradition, a carbo loading pasta dinner. the following morning in the pre-dawn light, the parks and 43 hundred runners mulligan in cary north carolina. keeping pace with anne is may have i rachel's mom sarah. yes, she runs too, we caught up with them at mile 10 and mile 17. >> go gram you can do it. >> and mile 21 dave and raven

what was your life and your family like for you? >> well you know to be fair my family was great. my grandfather, greatest writer of all time. i grew up in idaho. it was wonderful. but at the same time my father was dealing with being the son of the greatest writer in the 20th century. and he couldn't handle that. he was self-medicating, a terrible marriage where there was no communication. so what was happening -- there was a lot of drinking. there was a lot of -- and i became the fixer. you know i decided i was going to clean up after them and make everything okay. because also my sisters were very -- they were much older than me. they were into drugs, they were into alcohol. my oldest sister was starting to have trouble with mental illness. so it's about loving your family, but not knowing if that's normal not knowing if what you're doing is okay. and feeling confused. >> yes. when you talk about cleaning up you mean like when there were glasses thrown around. you're talking about physically you as a young girl trying to clean the mess up.

>> well, yeah. and i really think that we tend to not -- we think oh you know our kids won't know if we're having troubles. and even behind closed doors, kids know even if they don't hear it, they feel it they sense it. so i would wake up literally in the middle of the night, go downstairs clean up all the mess of whatever had happened in hopes that we'd wake up the next day and it would all be fine. and that's kind of -- and what you realize is until you tell your story, until you actually dig deep and tell your story of your childhood, and then onwards, you will repeat those patterns. so you know, as i got older, i realized i kept repeating these patterns of control and trying to get things together. but now i'm good. >> you are more than good. >> you write very poignantly about you wanted to be invisible almost. >> yes. and that's why the young adult book is called invisible girl because i actually felt like no one could see me.

i was an unplanned pregnancy. but in a moment of fighting between my parents, you hear that you're a mistake. and so i think there's a lot of kids out there that feel like unwanted abandoned at some level. i wanted to give voice to them. >> by the way, two great books we should point out. the young adult version and the grown up version. you broke the chain and cycle with your two wonderful daughters. >> thank you so much. >> we're very very proud of you, mariel. >> aw. you guys are great. >> brought the sunshine. >> we'll be back with more, but first this is "today" on nbc.
