a house alarm was not enough to scare a burglar in south san jose. it happened at a home on santa teresa boulevard tuesday morning. the homeowner was home and locked herself in the closet. she says the burglar forced his way through the back sliding door, calmly looked around and then tried to open the bedroom door. >> this is when i got scared because it i thought he was going to come in. right here is where i yell. i ran to the door and started hitting and screaming at the door telling him get out of here, the police are coming, they're going to shoot you. >> santa teresa neighborhood, not santa teresa boulevard. he escaped through the back empty handed and still on the loose. if you recognize him, please call police. an internal investigation is already under way for a disturbing video of an arrest in san bernardino county. this went down yesterday when a man tried to get away from police in a car and then tried to get away on a horse.

the chopper video shot by our sister station in los angeles shows the man falling off the horse, then deputies hit him with the stun gun and start kicking and punching him in the head. the suspect's girlfriend says the use of force was unnecessary. >> coming out of nowhere, he feels i might get my kicks. i don't understand why is something like that necessary? >> certainly understand the concern in the community based on what they saw in the video. i'm disturbed by what i see in the video but i don't need to jump to conclusions at this point until we do a thorough investigation. as i indicated, if our deputy sheriffs did something wrong they'll be put off work and dealt with appropriately in accordance with the law and department policy. >> the suspect is in the hospital with unknown injuries. three deputies were also injured during that chase. we're following a developing story in the midwest, major storms tear through the region. at least one person is dead after tornadoes touched down in

central and northern illinois last night. at least seven more people are in the hospital. in the small town of rochelle, a restaurant took a direct hit. firefighters rescued 12 people who were taking shelter in the basement. >> i looked out the window and i saw it was huge. it was huge and it was coming right for us and at that moment, ava grabbed me, ava is the owner, grabbed me, said "just get to the basement." >> as many as 50 buildings have been destroyed. the weather system now expected to move east today, bringing the potential of severe weather to the east coast. new this morning, some alaska airlines passengers are relieved to be in san jose, though they arrived hours late. flight 336 arrived at sjc just before 1:30 this morning. the flight initially left seattle at 8:50 last night but hit a bird mid flight. pilots turned around out of an

abundance of caution. the 112 passengers were put on another plane and did arrive eventually in san jose. police are releasing surveillance photos of two people they believe are connected to the killing of a popular musician in oakland. the man and woman shown in these pictures are believed to have been with the suspected gunman early sunday morning. police released pictures of the suspect's vehicle as well. it appears to be an early 2000 mercedes. stray bullet hit emelin navarez after he performed at the golden bull bar. we will learn how long it will take to clean up a cement spill in oakland creek. they will discuss what happened on wednesday at glen echo creek. subcontractor was filling an old pipe in the creek with cement. they didn't know there was a valve open. the cement flowed into the water posing a hazard to wildlife.

we may get answers today to recent allegations against san francisco sheriffs department. one issue, accusations from the public defender's office that deputies forced inmates to fight each other gladiator style and the officers bet on the battles. another recent black eye the escape of a detainee taking out the trash at the hall of justice. the sheriff, no stranger to controversy himself, will present the findings from an internal review and announce changes in the department. in her final report, sjpd's top watch dog says the department operates under a cloud of racial bias and needs more transparency. independent police auditor cordelle issues her final report before she retires in july. she is urging the department to expand the racial accountability especially in how it responds to complaints about racial bias by officers. so far though the department is not commenting. vice president joe biden is

waking up in the bay area this morning, so good morning to you, sir. he'll be in oakland this morning to observe a workforce development class put on by pg&e. the power pathway program focuses on preparing people for jobs in the utility industry. of the 600 people who graduated, 300 are veterans. after speaking to the students the vice president will talk to the press. the vice president's woififs also talking about a subject close to her heart, community college education. she held a round table forum at deanza college yesterday. though she's traveled to 61 community colleges across the country, deanza is the first in california. >> a lot of students don't even know that scholarships exist or how to go about it, or they're afraid to write that essay, and as a result, a lot of money sometimes goes unused.

a follow-up this morning. pg&e will pay $1.6 billion for its part in the deadly san bruno gas line explosion. that blast killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes in 2010. the utility responded saying it will do what it takes to ensure that thisser in happens again. pg&e, by the way, does not plan to appeal the penalty decision. administrators for the troubled field college are reportedly asking students to

another core of low pressure across over the bay area that means we could see rainfall like we did earlier this week. so we'll talk a little bit more about that and tell you what's happening in the bay area this weekend as we head throughout the 5:00 hour together. back to you scott and kris. >> new details on a wild kidnapping, car chase and shooting that left a bureau guard dead yesterday. authorities identified the gunmans alawrence buckner, suspected of kidnapping his wife in washington, d.c., and headed to the census bureau in suburban maryland where he shot and killed a guard. after a high-speed chase police cornered the gunman where he was shot and injured in a gun battle that also injured an officer. >> i thought they were shooting a movie at first. no, this is real life. i said okay, let me duck down. >> the kidnapped woman was not hurt. police are calling this a domestic dispute and say it was not terror-related. it's a somber day in texas, more than five years after the

shooting rampage at ft. hood, those who were wounded or killed in the attack will receive a purple heart. 13 people were killed, another 32 wounded in the deadliest attack on a u.s. military installation in history. the gunman now on death row. get your cameras ready for quite the photo opp. president obama, cuban president raul castro, will meet today. president obama is in panama for the summit of the americas. he is expected to encounter castro and will mark an historic moment as the u.s. and cuba try to restore ties. they have no formal schedule but expected to cross paths at the summit. what we've long expected could become a reality this weekend. hillary clinton will say she'll run for president in 2016. the former secretary of state is expected to officially announce her presidential bid as early as sunday. immediately following she'll hit the campaign trail. if clinton does announce, she

welcome back, beautiful friday morning as we look at the city this morning, it is 4:53. one of america's biggest music festivals is breaking new ground. for the first time in history in coachella, it will be broadcast on the radio, it begins today on sirius xm channel alt nation. among the performers for the music festival, ac/dc, drake, florence and the. and steeley dan. the warriors set the franchise record for most wins. >> seth curry scored 40 points in last night's win over the portland trailblazers but the real headline he drained eight three-pointers, breaking his own nba single season record for three-pointers, he now has 276 for the season. warriors win 116-105, and there are three games left before the playoffs. the sharks are out of the
