the ceremonial first pitch. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live. >> reporter: the long-time giants fan, as you mentioned, brian stow, should also be excited about making that first pitch. in fact, the staff here at the san jose giants are very excited to host him for the ceremonial first pitch here at municipal stadium in san jose. in fact, the san jose giants are calling this the most memorable and historic pre-game ceremony in the history of the san jose giants. you might recall stow was badly beaten during opening day in 2011 at chavez ravine in dodgers stadium so has spent the last four years trying to recover from that beating. many people and giants supporters have held fund-raisers in his name to help pay for medical bills and to help support brian's children. brian has a personal collection to the san jose giants. while he worked for the amr ambulance service, stow also work here at municipal stadium

and left to die. after several months of trying to find whoever is responsible, san jose police now say their leads have gone cold. it happened in mid-september at the intersection of winchester boulevard and payne avenue in san jose right next to the apartments. his mother tells us her 36 years sold ju son just finished watching the 49ers/bears game. he suffered brain damage and lost vision in his left eye and is now learning to walk. >> it's very hard for my son who's in tuned in a body that's -- i'm sorry -- somewhat it's foreign to him and, you know, he knows he's not the same person and it is very depressing and it's hard. >> a mother's grief. the victim's cell phone was stolen. police say whoever took it has not turned it back on.

his mother says her son used to mentor troubled teens in the south bay. he's married with a son and a daughter. if you know or saw anything, please contact san jose police. laura? 6:03. this morning a deadly house fire in san jose is under investigation and is being treated as a crime scene. a man took this cell phone video of smoke billowing out of the house. firefighters say when they arrive fire an smoke was pouring out of the home. the man out front told them he had escaped but someone else was still trapped. firefighters went in and found a body in the back bedroom. victim has not been identified but neighbors say he is not the man who owned the home. the fire started on jeanne avenue around 7:30 last nift ju night a few blocks from mckinley elementary school. in san jose, police are trying to figure out what caused a car to flip over and land on the vta tracks killing two people last night on north capital avenue.

police say five people were in the car, two of them died. a vta train was not involved. last night fire crews say one car rear-ended another sending that car head-on into fire hydrant. 75,000 gallons of water spilled on to the streets before crews were able to eventually shut that water off. two people were hurt in that crash but will be okay. happening today, a group of powerful catholics from all over the bay area are calling on pope francis to replace the archbishop of san francisco. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san francisco this morning. bob, the group signed a full-page ad appearing in this morning's "chronicle." you can't miss it, it is huge. >> reporter: it is on the back side. it is a full-page letter to pope francis asking the pope to remove him.

you've got ceos, a retired battalion chief, professors, teachers, other business leaders and members of the community. they take issue with the archbishop's stance on some moral issues. specifically gay marriage. he also requires that people who work and teach at the four catholic schools here in the city, that they abide by a morality clause. in a letter they argue that that is against the personal beliefs of some of these people, that it's -- they have to do this under the threat of losing their jobs. so basically they're asking the pope to remove the archbishop and they say that he has fostered, i'm quoting, "an atmosphere of division and intolerance." the archdiocese in response says this is just a small group of people. it's just over 100 people who signed this letter and they say it does not retch tpresent the e catholic community here in san francisco. the people who signed this letter will hold a news conference later to discuss this. live here in san francisco, bob

redell, "today in the bay." 6:06. new this morning, probably didn't wake you but a small earthquake hit overnight in the south bay. the 2.4 magnitude quake was centered just outside of campbell. it happened a little after 1:00 this morning. no damages or injuries to report so far. this is a live look outside of the bay bridge this morning. boat going by. it is that kind of day. >> ripples in the water. >> very poetic. we're joined by meteorologist christina loren with your microclimate forecast. >> you don't want to overdo it today but it will be pretty nice if you live in san francisco or anywhere near that beautiful water. but i can tell you hot conditions are expected inland for today. i live in campbell. did not feel a thing at my house as we all know here in earthquake country. but it is a 3.0 or better that will really shake things up. we like to let you know about everything that's happening. hey, that could become an active fault so we'll keep watching that for you.

61 degrees. in the vi valley, good morning. temperatures jumping from yesterday's highs. we'll be in the 70s. just about as warm as it was yesterday at lunch time today. 72 for the south bay. 72 on the east shore at noon. 72 degrees in the tri-valley rounding out the day like this. 83 degrees. really warm conditions for us in the south bay today. 86 in the north bay. 80 on the east shore. 85 degrees out in the tri-valley. you'll get into the upper 70s even in san francisco. so sunny and 8 to 10 degrees warmer throughout the day today. getting into the next couple days we are going to start to see those temperatures ease. we'll bring in some showers. yeah, showers, actually appreciable rainfall for some parts of the bay area early next week. we like to tell you what's going on. this is something for the pet lovers out there. eighth annual dog fest is happening this saturday. look at this guy. he got all dressed up for you,

mike inouye. this is actually the biggest san francisco dog event of the year. the bose park 11:00 to 4:00 p.m. temperatures will be a little on the comfortable side but a little hot for your dogs. bring water out there with them. they'll have owner/pet look-alike contests. that's always a good time. then celebrating all things goats at the ferry building. that looks like a good time. wouldn't want to have a "baaad" time right now, mike. >> all i can think about right now is goat cheese. we're looking at the bay bridge. things moving smoothly but slowly. right there at the toll plaza itself.

no major problems out of the maze. just a little slowing. moving to the peninsula, we have a crash involving a pickup, pickup and semi. no one reported injures there but the slowing has blocked a little past 101 past candlestick and the off-ramp there. 280 and 101 moving very smoothly. we'll zoom out, show you the north bay on the left. close to the limit for 101. highway 37 shows a little slowing out of vallejo, typical slowing. out of concord, a little lighter than typical. nothing near the walnut interchange. south 880 off the castro valley y shows a slowdown. a new crash looks like it is developing 880 southbound right around a street or just before you get there. i'll give you more details at chp arrives but it is flowing toward the san mateo bridge. no drama on the peninsula side there. that's far south of the crash.

a minor traffic accident overnight led to a major gusher in the city's richmond district. one car rear-ended another overnight sending a car into a fire hydrant. 75,000 gallons later firefighters were able to turn off the water. tough to see that loss. authorities in san jose are investigating a mysterious house fire last night on jeanne avenue. one man died in the fire, another was able to escape. firefighters say the man who died did not actually live at the house. the san jose giants are expecting an emotional home opener tonight. brian stow will throw out the first pitch tonight. it marks the latest step in his recovery from a severe beating four years ago outside dodgers stadium. the countdown is on as we take a live look this morning at oracle arena in that early morning sunrise. the nba playoffs tip off in just a couple of days. now we know that the warriors will square off against the new orleans pelicans in the first round. the action begins right there at

very little fog even tonight when we see a little bit of an onshore flow kick in. half moon bay, 79 in the forecast for today. of course your warmest beach city is going to be down in santa cruz, further to the south you go that's typically the case. 81 degrees out there for today. really lovely conditions will prevail at your local beaches. we do have a warning for beachgoers. we'll see some powerful waves today. this is kicked up by a storm system that's way out there in the eastern pacific. it is actually going to bring us some rainfall as we head throughout next week. we're talking about apreeprecia rainfall that we really need in the bay area. count on turbulent seas with long period swells out there for today all the way until friday at about 6:00 p.m.

this weekend if you want to head out there, you won't have the dangerous surf so that's good news, things will calm down saturday into sunday at your local beaches. we will hold on to the upper 60s, low 70s. just gorgeous conditions. now let me get what everybody wants to know -- when does the rain arrive and how much are we expecting. well, looks like tuesday morning we're going to see some rain even down here in the south bay with a better chance as we head throughout your wednesday and thursday. expecting potentially an inch of rain up in the north bay, expecting a half an inch in the south bay. temperatures are going to be much cooler as well. just a couple hot days. i think you can make it through. if you can, the good news is that natural ac will kick right back on as we head throughout sunday. and really stay on all the way through next week with some rain on the way and a lot of moisture moving over to tahoe. squaw alpine still open. this is actually going to keep it open even longer. we'll keep you up to date with what's going on.

northbound 101 really bogged down as folks continue to feed on to the roadway 101 just north of 680/280. we had a crash north 101 off oakland road. now we have the recovery there through that short segment where there was a lot of slowing. you don't need to take the alternate. you have overall a pretty pleasant drive throughout the south bay. pretty gentle silicon valley commute. we had a stall at west 580 at 680. sounds like everything's out of lanes but i'll watch for confirmation from that. also south 880 better news for a street where the crash has cleared out of the roadway. overall lighter volume for the nimitz through that stretch south of the coliseum. moving the map out, north 101 still has activity blocking your slow lane.

a crash between a pickup, a pickup and a semi. no injuries. things are clearer towards san francisco with a smooth drive up toward the bay bridge or golden gate bridge. we'll zoom out and show you the north bay has no slowing. the upper east shore slowing just a bit through hercules. but interstate 880 moving smoothly. the toll plaza metering lights are on. back-up as you would expect in this expect. but about thor nee eoe eor -- b for the span. 6:22. outbreak nearly over. what health officials are saying about the measles cases linked to disneyland.

6:25 on your thursday morning. a divisive and controversial issue hit a speed bump at the state capitol recently. yesterday the senate education committee delayed a vote on senate bill 277. that's the piece of legislation that would do away with the personal belief exemption for vaccinations. senators on that committee were critical of the bill and parents say it infringes on their rights. the committee will take up the issue again next week. but only after the bill's authors had a chance to talk to some of the senators. sb-277 easily passed in the senate's health committee earlier in the month. the bill was developed following december's meeasles outbreak at

not only was he planning it, but he had been talking about it so a lot of people knew it was happening, including the secret service. that agency under fire now because they learned back in october of 2013 that someone planned to fly this aircraft to the u.s. capitol. they say they met with that person and concluded the investigation but now that same man has done what he said he would. >> one of the challenges here in congress is we're open to the public. >> reporter: the gyro copter with the postal service insignia landed on the west lawn of the u.s. capitol nearly undetected. >> everyone was shouting, move, get down, move. >> reporter: florida letter carrier doug hughes was arrested for an act of civil disobedience. last year he told a "tampa bay times" reporter he planned to deliver mail using the aircraft that he described as a flying bicycle. >> i'm going to have 535 letters and those letters going to be addressed to every member of congress. >> reporter: hughes was

kick off the day. high pressure is the weather story. want to talk about this. this will keep our sky nice and clear as we head throughout the next 48 hours. temperatures will be a little bit warmer even tomorrow. what happens is the big ridge of high pressure takes the storm track way to the north as we head throughout the next wum days. this is where it will stay. by next week everything changes and we bring in some shower activity. this will be very short lived. 85 degrees in the tri-valley for today. 79 in san francisco even getting close to 80 degrees there. 83 degrees for us here in san jose. record heat is expected in santa rosa because of the warm start. record for today is 82. today forecasting 86 degrees and likely to tie a temperature record out in concord. there are changes on the way. we are expecting -- i mean expecting -- rain. widespread across the bay area. and snow in tahoe from the same system that's kicking up some pretty strong waves at the

coast. keep in mind, warning for beachgoers for today. we will see turbulence, long period swells. that goes for mariners as well. everything changes as that system breaks down that big ridge of high pressure i showed you an showers move into the picture. more on that in moments. right now i want to check your drive, happy thursday. mike, good morning. >> good morning. going farther inland from what you were reporting, toward dublin, looking at this volume of traffic, very, very pleasant drive for this portion of 580. this is a approach the dublin interchange where the arrow is. we had a stall reported at 586. that is off the roadway. the distraction not really a factor for your morning commute. slow out of the altamont just a bit. as we move the map a little bit to the west, you see traditional slowing from 580 south in toward fremont from both of those freeways. the earlier crash at a street from nimitz is clear. slows to 50 miles per hour.

that's a great flow of traffic. as we move the map, south of there, south 680 as you approach mission, reports of another fenn fennder-bender. it is not the same crash, it is a second crash. we'll get more chance for swelling toward the fremont. 880 shows the build as well down into the south bay. no real issues northbound. volume built for 101 and 87. a crash 85 just north of highway 17 not causing any slowing for the last few minutes. palo alto, traffic slowing nicely past here. this is where university avenue heads north with taillights past willow. we'll jump north on the maps as we look at north 101. this is the only real slowdown from the bay shore free wwafree. on the candlestick, still a bit of distraction with the semi on the shoulder. a little bit of slowing. 280 by comparison very clear but it takes you a little bit

airlines jet. the search will double if no wreckage is found by way. so far 61% of the 23,000 square mile area off of australia's west coach has been searched. they found nothing. malaysia airlines flight 370 vanished more than a year ago headed from dwa kuala lumpur to beijing. a plane made an emergency landing on a beach in had north san diego. a chopper was on a routine training mission when the crew received low pressure warning. witnesses say they could see fluid and smoke coming from the aircraft before and after it landed. luckily no crew members or people on beach were hurt. now a follow-up this morning. we still don't know what caused the death of a sperm whale that washed up this week on a beach in pacifica. so far biologists are calling the cause of death a mystery but they don't believe that a ship struck it. it appears to have been eating at the tile. the marine mammal center says it's been seven years since the

east shore freeway showing a good build over the last ten minutes. down to university things are starting to slow down here. the berkeley curve, of course, north 880 slows around that bend heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza. toward the caldecott, walnut creek, a little slowing. pretty typical lighter thursday pattern there in novato as well. northbound 101 at candlestick, we have a crash involving the two pickups and semi blocking the slow lane. now approaching the area we have slowing building as the commute kicks in toward san francisco. this is a concern. i haven't got any eta when they expect more crews to arrive. but that is a slower drive. 280 north of 380 and towards san francisco, by comparison, no problem. in fact north of 92 into san

francisco, a nice drive across 92 for westbound out of hayward and out of the east bay. over here the tri-valley, nothing really unusual. there is a jam for 84 heading toward 680. pretty typical as the burst of traffic. northbound routes through san jose move slowly from 101. the crash at 85 and 17 has cleared. a live look at san jose. the build as traffic's flowing. this is north of 680 and 280. sam, you have a very special day lined up for that south bay. >> yes. a heart-warming one. thanks, mike. emotions will run high tonight at the san jose giants home opener. brian stow, the giants fan brutally beaten outside of dodgers stadium several years ago, will stand from his wheelchair to throw out the

"today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live at municipal stadium in san jose this morning. damian, this is a moment a long time in the making. >> reporter: this is a big day for the san jose giants. they have been waiting for this day for a very long time. we have a sneak peek at what you might be seeing here tonight at municipal stadium. special video thanks to the bay area news group. it's brian stow preparing in his backyard for today's big day. he's actually tossing a baseball to his dad from his backyard so you can see how far he has come. brian stow has a personal connection to the san jose giants. the san jose giants are calling this one of the most memorable and historic pre-game ceremonies in their history especially because brian stow used to be an emt here at the san jose giants games when he was working for the amr ambulance company. you may recall brian stow was badly beaten at chavez ravine and dodgers stadium.

the first pitch tonight is completing a promise the giants organization made to brian's children. they promised to bring brian back as soon as he was able to do the honors on opening day. >> it is a story of comeback. the giants come back a lot to win world championships and they love their fans. brian's been a great fan of the giants for his whole life. and to just see what he's come through. and to be able just to give him something back like this, you know, a little excitement, it's just the kind of thing that really resonates with everybody. >> reporter: the san francisco police credit union opened up a fund for brian stow's family. giants organization is asking fans to make a donation to that fund to help pay for the continued therapy and for brian's children. the gates open again at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon. first pitch by brian stow is at 7:00. they're calling brian stow here the comeback kid.

live in the south bay, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> what a great story. the brutal mystery in the south bay. a man severely beaten outside his apartment complex and left to die. after several months of trying to find whoever is responsible, san jose police say their leads have gone cold. it happened in mid-september near the intersection of winchester boulevard and payne avenue in san jose. his mother tells us her 36-year-old son just finished watching the 49ers/bears game at home. he left to walk to a nearby store but didn't come back. the next morning neighbors found him beaten and unconscious on the sidewalk. he can't remember what happened that night. he suffered brain damage and lost vision in his left eye. now he's learning to walk again. >> it's very hard for my son who is in tuned in the body that is -- i'm sorry -- it's somewhat foreign to him and he knows he's not the same person and it's

very depressing and it's hard. >> the family is suffering. the victim's cell phone was stolen and police say whoever took it hasn't turned it on. his mother says her son used to mentor troubled teens in the south bay. he's married, has a son and daughter. if you know or saw anything, call san jose police. 6:54 right now. a san francisco homeless man is in jail this morning accused of attacking a 5-year-old child in the marina district. officers arrested the man yesterday morning. police say that the girl and her mother were walking past him when he grabbed her by the neck, lifted her up and pushed her into a nearby wall. the girl was scratched and had injuries to her neck. police are not saying what provoked the attack. also this morning, a deadly house fire in san jose is under investigation. it is being treated as a crime scene. a man took this cell phone video of smoke billowing out of the house. firefighters say when they got tlo, fire and smoke just poured out. a man out front told him he was able to escape but someone else

was still trapped inside. firefighters went in and found a body in the back bedroom. the victim has nots be been identified but neighbors say he is not the man to owns the house. the fire started on jeanne avenue around 7:30 last night a few blocks away from mckinley elementary school. also in san jose, police are trying to figure out what caused a car to flip over and land on vta tracks killing two people. the crash happened late last night on north capital avenue. police say of the five people in the car, two died. new video this morning. water is gushing dozens of feet into the air in san francisco. it all late last night near 11th and geary in the city's richmond district. fire crews say one car rear-ended another sending that car head-on into a fire hydrant. 75,000 gallons of water spilled on to the streets before crews were able to shut off the water. two people were hurt in that crash but will be okay. relatives of a truck driver who died in a fiery crash in the

east bay are suing his employer now. 52-year-old ule levy died one month ago when his truck crashed through a restaurant on railroad avenue in pittsburgh. the suit claims the brakes and other mechanical systems in the truck failed. after plunging into the restaurant, that truck exploded. a police officer is on paid leave this morning after shooting a woman just east of the oakland airport. the woman was allegedly driving a stolen car and rammed the officer's patrol car moments before she was shot. the officer was not hurt. the woman was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. at least one person was arrested. four east bay high school students are due in court next week in connection with an armed robbery. last week police say the 17 year-olds put on masks and pulled a gun on a drug dealer and his friend taking marijuana and their cell phones. all four are athletes at concord's clayton valley charter high school. they're being charged as adults.
