>> i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots of news. first, meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you, laura, sam. everybody at home, you made it to thursday. just one day away from the all important weekend. we do have a very interesting weather pattern as we head throughout the day today. especially getting into that weekend. the chance of showers have improved. we're in the 50s to start. 52 san carlos. 55 right here in san jose. more on that changing weather pattern. right now let's check your drive. here's mike inouye. >> a little bit of fog there but not problems as far as the south. we're looking toward oakland. lights as well. again, traffic flows nicely. overnight closure has cleared up as traffic goes past the coliseum. look at the maps. we see it's showing green through that area. both sides of the bay. as we zoom out we see nothing going on except the overnight road crews. that's a standard flow.

altamont pass. a little bit of slowing coming up, guys. back to you. now to a developing story. teenager is on the run after escaping the custody of chp officers in oakland. >> at the time officers were booking the 16-year-old girl on car theft. "today in the bay's" bob ridell joins us now. bob, any idea how the teen was able to walk away undetected? >> we do not have a full picture yet. the family wants to know how the california highway patrol can be, in their words, out smarted by a 16-year-old girl. the chp is still trying to find 15-year-old elida retana at chp yesterday morning. her stepmother says officers brought her to their hayward home at 3:00 a.m. after they say she stole a car and gave them a false name. after they tried to release her to the family the family told her to take her back to the chp office instead. they wanted hr to be held accountable for other

outstanding warrants. >> she was in shock. i was telling her in spanish, what are you thinking, what are you doing. like, you need to turn yourself in already for the warrant that you have. >> reporter: the family says elida is a chronic run away. they hope her arrest and detention would keep her off the streets. they're also upset because they believe the chp could keep her in custody. chp hasn't explained how she was able to escape only to say this is, quote, very rare. >> thank you very much. moving forward. another search this morning in va l. on 50ette and cherry streets in south vallejo. a crowd gathered after a funeral when gunfire erupted. 7-year-old boy was hit in the chest by a stray bullet and ultimately rushed to a hospital with life circuit threatening injuries. no word right now on his current condition. happening today, crews are preparing for another day of all

out searching for a missing south bay teenager. 17-year-old connor sullivan was last seen on monday about 10:00 a.m. he went to his morning classes at high school in cupertino. and then he disappeared. they showed up at the center to help look for the teenager. this is being classified with a run away with suspicious circumstances. san mateo shop is offering a $2500 reward this morning after burglars struck twice in less than a week. atlas skate shop is an historic building that means security options there are limited. here's some video of the robb y robberirobber robberies themselves if first incident was ten days ago around 2:00 in the morning. the suspects wearing hoodies smashed open the front door, went inside and snagged a bunch of merchandise. three days ago it appears the same people returned for more. this time they smashed a window to get inside. the store owner says it's costing him thousands of dollars and customers worry it's a big hit for a small business.

>> crews are on the scene at the home on lolo lane just down the street from the benjamin bubb elementary school. kris? >> we now know that sadly this was a fatal fire and that a man died in a bedroom here in a home on lolo lane. i have the deputy chief from mountain view fire who can tell us more about that. kind of a frightening scene not only because of the fatality but also you heard some explosions going off inside. >> when we arrived on the scene we had a heavy fire to the rear of the structure. we had live ammunition that was going off in the garage. we also encountered live wire to the rear of the house. >> reporter: was there any danger to the adjacent homes? they were exposed to the heat of the fire but we protected the structures. >> i would imagine as people hear explosions you must have gotten multiple calls on this one? >> we received multiple calls, that's correct. >> reporter: does it appear that the explosions were the cause of

the fire? >> we do not know what the cause of the fire is. it's under investigation. >> reporter: but the fire did not necessarily start in the same place as the explosions? >> the explosions were live ammunition that was in the garage. the fire did not start in the garage. however, the fire did get into the garage eventually. >> reporter: must have been frightening for crews. >> it was a little scary there at the moment but we stayed with it and we extinguished the fire. >> reporter: it was fully involved as you all arrived? you were telling me earlier, flames coming out the back, heavy smoke, firefighters did go inside to make sure that there wasn't anybody still trapped. >> correct. we did extinguish the fire. it was heavily involved to the rear. rear bedrooms were in the fire. we located one person. unfortunately the person was deceased. >> we know you're going to be here for a little while loerng and investigation, of course, will continue. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the new information out there, kris. >> thank you. 4:38 right now. some warmer humid air still clinging around here in the bay area this morning.

>> let's check the forecast. what are we in for today, christina? >> a very different day ahead. temperatures are not going to be quite as warm as they were yesterday but, yeah, sam is right, muggy with a few showers to the south this morning. now, what you will notice here is a lot of that activity is well to the south of the bay area but we're still in that flow where we're getting a little bit of moisture out there but we'll see. a nice day ahead. temperatures not too bad. the good news is the big piece of information that i can bring you is that we have a much better chance for showers as we get into your weekend which is now just a couple of days away. 55 degrees in the south bay to start. 54 degrees in the tri-valley. 43 degrees in the nor bay. this an indication of a mostly clear sky which we just have not had over the past couple of days. so as we head throughout tonight into tomorrow expecting more of those thunderstorms locally even and a really good chance for rain as we get into your weekend. but you know what, i'm still going to be able to get you outdoors. we'll talk all about that coming up.

right now, let's check your drive. say happy thursday, friday eve. >> friday eve, we'll focus on that and the folks getting off of work soon. look at the flashing lights as you head with the taillights eastbound across the high rise of 92. that's traditional overnight road work on the san mateo bridge. slowing at the scene just by the few cars there. looking over toward the map though and you should always slow for the cones no matter how light the traffic is. 92 across the bay on the right. the arrow points northbound 101 approaching sfo. we do have a crash on the shoulder. it's been there for quite some time. a little distraction. no slowing right traffic on that san mateo peninsula. we'll zoom out and show you the entire bay showing you a pretty good drive as far as all of your major routes. 92, we'll show you the construction crews moving around and that might result in slowing over the next half hour. looking over here toward westbound 580. we talked about the altamont pass. westbound of course your commute direction into livermore and dublin interchange at speed. let's check the north bay.

happening today the family of michael brown is filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of ferguson. we knew this was coming. we just didn't know when. last night lawyers for the family announced they will file the lawsuit today. the lawsuit will also name the former officer darren wilson who shot and killed brown. wilson resigned from the police department in november. brown's shooting led to often violent protests in ferguson and led to a national movement calling for changes in how police deal the with minorities. san francisco archbishop reportedly not going to attend the same controversial march against same-sex he did attend last year. the march for marriage takes place in washington, d.c. and last year the archbishop angered some/many by playing a big role in that including delivering a speech against day marriage and leading a prayer.

san francisco's archdiocese t l tells the con call he will stay home this year but other u.s. bishops will attend. highly controver tro vertro mandatory vaccination bill passed another significant hurdle. the measure which would force most parents to either vaccinate their kids or home-school them passed the state senate education committee, but not before getting some key amendments. the sponsors added clarification to allow unvaccinated children to join so circuit called group home-schools or enroll in independent studies. the bill faces one more committee vote before it goes to a full senate vote. when it comes to deliveries for get the front porch and make some room in your trunk. amazon is testing a new delivery service in germany. when customers buy something online they can select this new delivery option. all they had to do is tell the delivery company where their caring is go to be and give them electronic authorization to open the trunk. when the package shows up in their trunk. currently it only works for customers who drive audis.

chemicals but the consumer products safety commission does limit them to less than .1% of material used in kids' toys and clothes. home depot said the switch will happen by the end of the year. and say good-bye to unknown numbers. facebook is testing a new caller id app called hello that matches numbers to facebook profile to show information on who you are talking to, blocked calls from commonly blocked numbers and search for businesses to call. it's only available now on android phones as apple ios software doesn't let apps interfere with phone calls. >> do telemarketers have facebook profiles? thank you very much, landon. >> hello is the name of it. 4:47. terrifying ordeal at 20,000 feet. a pilot made a snap decision to put a commuter plane into a nose dive after passengers started feeling sick. the flight was traveling from connecticut to chicago and just after takeoff several passengers started feeling lightheaded and

dizzy. that's when the pilot made a daring decision. >> they had a couple of the passengers not feeling well. one passed out. and so they needed a rapid descent because the captain had said that the -- all the symptoms led or led him to believe that it was a lack of cabin pressure. so he dropped us down real quick. >> the dive is an extreme maneuver used to increase oxygen in the passenger cabin. ultimately the plane made an emergency landing in buffalo, new york. this morning investigators say they didn't find anything that would have led the aircraft to lose cabin pressure. now they're trying to figure out why the passengers got so sick so quickly. >> just glad everybody is okay, yeah. east bay company is offering a little high tech help for anyone trying to conserve in this historic drought. oakland based eden has developed a device to help you track how much water your garden, lawn, or even your crops. the device will tet you back about 100 bucks. you put it into your soil and it

sunny and mild afternoon coming your way. by lunchtime today, temperatures in the mid to upper 60s all across the board. and then we're looking to finish off the day in the low 70s on the peninsula. the same for the south bay. 77 degrees. up in wine country and what a spectacular weekend. shaping up in wine country. we have a big event happening there on saturday. the butter and eggs day parade in petaluma. we might see a little bit of rain over that parade as an area of low pressure dives to the south. now, this is actually going to provide generous snowfall over tahoe and in fact all of the way down the spine of the sierra nevada. we're going tva snow level very high between 7,000 and 8,000 feet. none the less, we're getting into the end of our rainy and snow season. so we'll take whatever we can get. speaking of that parade if you are going to be headed out there nbc bay area, proud sponsor. saturday, 71 degrees. comfortable conditions. up in the forth bay on sunday, better day for this and you're out door plans.

we have the april sun rise tour at muir woods. temperature also be on the chilly side. what a great tour. you will find out a lot about that spectacular area to visit. if you haven't been there it is really, really pretty out there. temperatures friday into saturday are going to drop off but look at the climb for sunday. into the 70s. a good looking week as we kick off back here next monday. temps in the 80s. and then we might get a little precipitation toward the end of next week. right now back to you, sam and laura. >> christina, thank you very much. new type of therapy may prove as effective as medication for treating depression. british researchers assign patients with major depression to either take antidepressants or attend a mindfulness based cognitive therapy. the therapy trains the mind to resist damaging thoughts op over two years both groups showed similar relapse rates. it could be a good onption for people who don't want to take antidepressants long term. they track down a woman to thank her for a simple gesture.

on everything going on including this story here. two police departments and social media have tracked down a bay area woman ho simply said thank you. we first told you about this story yesterday. denver police officer returned to his cruiser a few weeks ago and found a letter that read in part, i'm from san jose and we lost an asset to an amazing team last week. thank you for risking your life every day for my safety. it was in response to that deadly shooting of san jose police officer michael johnson. the letter was simply signed loren. officers in both san jose and denver turned to social media to try and find her and thank her. after weeks of searching they finally reached 27-year-old loren talbert. >> i was about to drive away. i don't know. i just thought about it. it was just kind of like, you know when something prompts you and you can't really explain it, kind of overcome you, i -- i should just -- i should just say something and a lot of people don't. i just -- you know, i just was like, i'm just going to do it. i'm just going to say something.
