hour the death toll is rising. it's now more than 3,700. >> a u.s. military plane may arrive with search and rescue teams. on mt. everest helicopters used to transport dozens off of the mountains. >> this is chilling video of the moment that avalanche swept through base camp. people are running for cover as they are overcome by a wall of snow and ice. in a moment we're going to talk to a man who was there. first, to nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel in kathmandu for us. good did morning to you. >> reporter: officials tell us that any death toll at this stage is really an estimate. they are still coming to terms with the scale of this disaster. in the aftershocks are continuing. the entire city of kathmandu seems to have moved outside. families live on curbs, trying to keep their children fed,

clean and most of all, away from buildings. >> the historic center of kathmandu is the most popular attraction by far with an shent temples and palaces. where a 9-story tower had been over 150 years old, now just a stump. a temple compound even older, reduced to a pile. volunteers today were digging with their hands. they don't expect to find survivors, just bodies. police have already found around 150 of them in this area. one woman used to come to this spot. why are you helping? >> i've been here every day. used to come and hang out. we used to sit along here with friends. it's my country, my people. >> reporter: this is also the height of tourist season. american visitor captured this video of guests huddled in front of their hotel during saturday's earthquake and aftershocks. >> there was a huge crowd and we

had a couple of big aftershocks after which everybody was saying get down, get down. >> reporter: kathmandu is on edge, but what's happening to the east on the slopes of mt. everest is less clear. there were more avalanches sunday. trails and camps swept away. at least three americans have died on the mountain. a few dozen survivors have been rescued. it's unknown how many people are trappeden effortest. a military official told us here that teams are heading out to remote parts of nepal which are difficult to access even under normal circumstances. and which now may be completely inaccessible. >> richard engel, thank you very much. >> as we mentioned crews are slowly beginning to rescue climbers who have been trapped for two days by the avalanche. as we see dramatic video of part of that disaster. nbc's miguel almaguer is in nepal with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning.

returned here to kathmandu, all too familiar scene of horror and terror on the worldest tallest mountain. >> thank you so much. garrett was one of the climbers on mt. everest during that avalanche, joining us by phone. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> first and foremost we like to say how sorry we are to hear about your base campp doctor, marisa eve girawong. she lost her life. highway are you guys doing? >> the climbers are doing okay. we came down from camp, the last two nights, that's when the earthquake occurred. avalanche all over the mountain. today we descended and then went back to the helicopter and base camp. >> take us back if you wouldn't mind when that 7.8 earthquake hit. where were you and describe what was happening? >> a team in the valley between the camp and mt. everest and we were fw two thirds of the way when we heard an awful noise and

heard avalanches on either side of the valley. and we thought we were going to get taken out. fortunately we had a snow cloud. up to came two, on the radio, checked in with base camp and learned the awful destruction in base camp. >> there are food supplies obviously, things that you guys need. tell us how critical it is that everyone get off that mountain as quickly as possible in terms of time. >> well, it's important because the route from base camp was totally destroyed by the earthquake, and the avalanches that came down. tried to climb the route back down. it was impossible. and the aftershocks creating more danger. the only option was to fly by helicopter. we had a break in the weather today and were able to get us out of there. >> this had to be we're talking earlier like the worst possible time for this type of a tragedy to happen because explain that this is actually the time where a lot of people try to climb that mountain.

>> absolutely. yeah. the climbers were set up in base camp. staff standing by. unfortunately, they were hit the hardest. we were fortunate where we were we lucked out. a huge snow slide behind base camp. >> we wish you all the best. thanks for speaking with us. everyone talk ss about how people are helping people in the way they have never seen before. it's not turning into one of those sometimes there is rioting and looting. everyone is helping. >> seismologists were just there a week and a half earlier, all signs pointing to something big happening. >> what a terrible time for it. meantime, you're following storms in the south. >> really active weather the way we ended last week we're starting this week. this is in stephenville, techt. look at this. they have so much hail, 19

tornados but hail destroyed the windshield of this stormchaser. so much so they had to put goggles on to protect themselves. now look at what was going on in rhea vista. this is unbelievable. you can see what happened. tractor-trailers turned over, flooding, massive problems. and it's going to continue today. you can see the lightning going on in the background as we said, 19 tornados already. more on the way. here's what we've got going on. you look at the flooding. we've got the subtropical jet, a lot of gulf moisture, right now we have tornado watches in effect for eastern texas and it's extending across a good portion of southern louisiana until 1:00 this afternoon. we also have tornado watches, we're watching all of this through the afternoon so we have the risk of strong storms, stretching from houston up to shreveport, mobile, alabama, new orleans as well. and enhanced area, 13 million people at risk for tornados from new orleans back to lake

charles, tomorrow the risk continues from new orleans into tallahassee. about 2 million people. plus we have flood watches in effect because we're looking at from 3 to 4 inches of rain as you can see, the rainfall going to be very heavy along southern louisiana on into the panhandle of florida. so flooding, tornados, damaging winds, hail, all a big possibility today. houston the biggest city undidder the gun today. >> all right. thanks. turning to a trial that starts today. >> opening statements begin in the long-awaited trial of james holmes, the man accused of opening fire in a colorado movie theater killing 12 people and wounding 70. jacob rascon is in colorado. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is a rare case in which a mass shooter survived his attack and now nearly three years later a jury will decide whether he was sane at the time and if he was, whether or not he should be put to death. hundreds of moviegoer were attacked in the theater in

aurora, colorado when authorities say james holmes entered wearing tactical gear, armed and started shooting. he killed 12 people and injured 70, before his rifle jammed. police arrested him but had to disarm his booby trapped apartment. the defense admits that holmes carried out the attack but alleging he was inthe sane at the time. the prosecution will try to convince the jury that holmes' elaborate planning among other things proves he was sane. the trial is expected to last several months. the horror of that day to be relived in pain staking detail. opening statements will be given this afternoon. natalie. >> jacob rascon, thank you. the defense begins its arguments to save the life of convicted boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. the 21-year-old was convicted of 30 federal charges and 17 of those charges carry the possibility of the death penalty. the defense maintained that he

was manipulated by his older brother who was killed in a shoot-out with police. tsarnaev's defense is expected to take up to two weeks. dramatic video after a huge ball of flames engulfed a tanker truck near los angeles hauling 8800 gallons of gas when it jackknifed and exploded on the freeway sunday. the driver was able to escape with minor bumps and bruises. crews extinguished the flames but the accident shut down the freeway for hours. one of new york's most wanted is finally off the streets this morning. a stlans camera recorded new york police capturing a coyote that has been roaming around the city, police cornered the animal at a cafe after an hour-long pursuit. officers tranquilized the female and she was taken to the animal hospital for evaluation and will be released into the wild. where she belongs. and a movie night that is out of this world.

r latest weather. savannah? >> thank you so much. now to the talk of washington and the 2016 presidential race right now. it's the new book called clinton cash that raises questions about hillary clinton, her family's foundation and its foreign donors might have influenced policy during clinton's time as secretary of state. peter schweitzer is the author and he joins us this morning. >> good morning. >> let's put it bluntly. are you hoping this book and the issues you raise in it torpedo her candidacy? >> this is not really motivated to her candidacy. i've done two previous books that looked at corruption and looked at people in both political parties. what we have with the clintons is a unique arrangement where you have a powerful you know, public figure who's involved with all these foreign entities. >> if a person believes every word in yo book wouldn't that be disqualifying with everything

you're saying. you say people donate and get favorable treatment by the state department run by hillary clinton. >> certainly the evidence i think is pretty shocking and could have that implication. but really the motivation is consistent with my previous work to look at the whole issue of corruption. >> do you have any specific instance in which hillary clinton directly intervenes on behalf of donors to the clinton foundation? >> it's a great question. what we have is a pattern of behavior. i was not in any of these meetings. i can't look into hillary clinton's mind. i certainly can't look at her e-mails. so the question becomes what is this pattern? and this pattern consistently shows that donors give large sums of money to the foundation where they pay bill clinton a lot for a speech. there's a policy action that's taken to the benefit of that donor. in some of those instances hillary cl reversing course on previous policy position. that's why my recommendation is

somebody with subpoena power, with investigative capabilities should look at this behavior. >> you think this is something that could be criminally investigated. >> i think it should be. i don't go in with the assumption it was criminal but i think it warrants further investigation. >> if everything in your book were put before jurors let's say, in a court of law and we were told to assume it is true have you proven a quid pro quo? >> well i don't think a quid pro quo needs to be the standard. if you look at senator macdonalds, menendez those were not kwid pro quos. it's do people believe the events were connected and there was some sort of pay to play arrangement? and that's a question i can't answer but i think investigators should look into. >> you started off mentioning you've done bipartisan investigations. but a lot of your critics say you are conservative and this is a right wing hit job.

the corps guard says it's looking for four missing boaters after finding a fifth they thought was lost actually safe at home. two others confirmed dead after that fierce storm saturday which swamped ten boats. boaters still missing this morning race participants, who survived the storm, know how lucky they are to be alive. >> i'm very fortunate. very blessed. >> reporter: joshua edwards took these pictures at the height of the storm with his mother at the helm says it's the worst he's ever seen. >> by the time rerealized it was on top of us. it was minutes. >> reporter: coast guard boats and aircraft and local authorities searching mobile bay nonstop. >> we're working or hardest still to bring those still missing back to their families. >> reporter: 40 boaters, some racers, mostly others out sailing, were rescued soon after the storm hit. richard who shot this video says he and his crew pulled three people from the water.

was there an adjustment time for family members to kind of get used to this idea? >> i think there is still an adjustment and there's, you know family therapy and we're really close. you know i see reports that say, you know, this one doesn't support him and this one is over here and my mom feels this way and it's all really so made up. we all really support him. is it a hard adjustment, yes. is there things that we have learned more recently and it's an adjustment on how to deal with it. it's a daily process. >> can you give me a sense of an adjustment, give me an example of what it takes to adjust. >> even just the discussion, we have been talking to people from, you know the glaad organization and different organizations on what do we call him? do we say him or her? and it's, you know, how do we be respectful that's so many things -- there's so many things you want to be supportive and respectful.

bruce wants us to feel as comfortable as possible and take everything at our own pace. we love him for that and we respect him for that. you know until that transition is done, we have learned that you do refer to him as him. but bruce has always been really really good at explaining everything to us. even though it's really new and these have been newer feelings -- not newer feelings for him, but for us to digest. he's done a really good job of walking us through it. >> do you have any idea the attention he'll get for a certain period of time? paparazzi with one of the long lenses grabbed photos of him and they're splashed across the tabloid newspaper. is he prepared for that? >> i think he is prepared for it. i think that he has waited almost 65 years to make this decision. whether he's kept it to himself or not. he's lived with it. and i think that when you are finally ready to be your true

self, then you're prepared for anything. >> was there a family meeting? the family gathers in the living room? >> there were lots of family meetings. >> and bruce tells his story, that's embracing and hugging and tears and laughter? >> every emotion you could possibly imagine. there is hundreds of family meetings. we still have them. say what you want about us but we work out everything as a family and we have the best communication and we are so in sync with each other. i love having so many siblings and such a supportive mom because each family member might be dealing with this in a different way, but we have each other to go through this experience with. i'm really grateful for that. >> that's amazing. bruce, i grew up watching him

wants to live as a woman. his decision to speak out is leading to a national communication about the transgender community. here is dr. phil mcgraw, psychologist. author of "the 20/20 diet." good morning. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> do you think this is a watershed moment in terms of talking about these issues and understanding them? >> i do for this reason. i think any time someone that's high profile, someone that gets attention talks about an issue and pushes it to the forefront of the narrative in the country, then it's a game changer. it gets people that weren't talking about it before really talking about it. it opens their mind and something that they might have been really judgmental about before usually because of a lack of information now sit back and thought, they look at it and go, wow, i'm not so threatened about it after hearing about it. >> especially like someone like bruce jenner who we've heard about in decades. we'll play a piece of the interview and talk about it on

the other side. >> sure. >> this is who i am. i'm not stuck in anybody's body it's just who i am as a human being. my brain is much more female than it is male. it's hard for people to understand that, but that's what my soul is. >> i think it is hard for people even if they want to understand it to figure out what is going on here. what does -- what do we know medically about what causes this? >> well physicians particularly neurologists tell us that we're born essentially all with the same brain and then however much testosterone is bombarded and absorbed by the brain then begins to determine what the gender identity is going to be and i think here what he's saying is he has felt like he had much more of a female identity than what he was expressed in terms of his external genitalia.

so all of this time he's felt one way but then been identified differently. and can you imagine the confusion? can you imagine the frustration of feeling that all of this time? and so now to say, okay that masquerade is over. how freeing must that be? can you just imagine? >> well he seemed to literally almost have the weight off of his shoulders in this interview. let me ask you about another item in the news. dr. oz who similar to you is a doctor who came to fame from oprah, has been facing some scrutiny. i just wondered what you thought of it if you think it's fair how you feel about what he's going through. >> i don't think it's fair. i think sometimes language can get excitable and that sort of thing, but i don't think it's fair. i think he is a solid physician. i think he largely gives good advice and i think that sometimes you can get into a feeding frenzy and just way overreact to things.

i think he's a good guy. i think he gives good advice and i think he's very solid as a physician. >> meantime your show is off to its new season. you have a really interesting case today that you're going to be talking about, a man who was convicted of second degree child abuse, but the circumstances aren't necessarily what people might think? >> i always say you have to take any of these allegations seriously until they're proven otherwise, and i always believe the child. i always believe it because you don't want to leave a child uninvestigated when an allegation is there, but when you investigate them sometimes you find out that things have been overreacted to. i think people are going to look at this and be horrified at what has happened in america here. sometimes you get a badge heavy social worker, sometimes you get people that over react. we've got a man in prison here and i think it is shocking that this has happened in america. i think when people look at this they're going to be worried. and i don't want people to get

that's across the street from the ritz carlton. police are not saying much about what happened, just that the woman's body was found at the top of the staircase and that a dog on a leash of also there and was removed from the scene. we take you to nepal where the death toll is above 4,000. there have been aftershocks, as well. fairly serious one. lots of rescue crews on their way to kathmandu. the problem is they can't all get into the airport. we continue to monitor this and will have a phone interview with someone coming up at 11:00. meantime we'll have weather and traffic coming up after this.
