home. a fiery wreck is causing huge backups on 880. >> "today in the bay's" bob ridell is joining us live in san leandro with the latest. they temporarily issued a hard closure there. all lanes closed. this is not the type of site you want to see if you're trying to get in to work. looking at the northbound direction of brake lights. northbound direction of 880 here. just north of davis, south of 98. if you look down maybe a quarter mile from that you will see the flashing lights. that's where this accident is. you will notice that none of the big rig or the cars in that backup are moving because all lanes of northbound 880 here again north of davis, south of 98, are shut down because of this chain reaction accident. i want to show you some video. this happened around 3:00 this morning. it was quite a very serious accident. one car at least caught fire or up to seven cars involved in this chain reaction accident. this is according to chp. major injuries. chp hasn't specified how many

people are hurt but indicating there were no fatalities. again, a very serious accident that has resulted in chp issuing a sig alert that shut down of 880 here northbound direction on the border with san leandro and oakland and we do know that they have wreckers headed to the scene to clear the scene. they also have caltrans out there assisting them to help with the cleanup and reopening of the road. we still do not have an eta as far as when this accident scene would be cleared and when they might be able to at least get one lane open as you can see though it is -- traffic is at stand still. as we were coming across the san mateo up 880 to try to get to h accident we noticed the backup starting at around marina. that was maybe 10 or 15 minutes ago. as of course you're well aware we're in the morning commute. we would be surprised in that backup is even further south. reporting live here in san leandro, bob ridell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. now for a look at ways around this mess let's which ek in with mike inouye in our traffic center. >> good morning.

as bob showed you some background of his shot the traffic completely stopped. that is northbound 880. it's jammed from basically 238 up a of the way up past the scene. now, let me get your alternate. alternate, forced off at davis. but if you get over to international you can take that up to 98 and get on north of that scene. meanwhile, westbound 580 is the smoothest drive. all the background, bob, they're stuck there. the other big rigs advised to take west 580. that will change the traffic flow. i want to show you that video p f. you missed it. this is the scene earlier p crash happened. car fire as a result of, as bob says, possibly up to seven other vehicles. sounds like five. you hear that pop, a little explosion going on. fire department was able to take care of that as bob reported. no one has died as a result of this crash. there are injuries and there are crews there taking care of the injuries. hopefully they've been transported well earlier this morning and we do hear there was someone trapped in a vehicle able to get removed as well. this traffic is still stopped. if we take our live shot we see right over here. what i've been watching is this

is our shot from the oakland camera. turn it to the south. 98 there. there's the crash north of davis. i saw all of these lights starting to move around a few minutes ago. i'm hoping they are making progress. back to the maps. concern because all of that traffic is coming off of castro valley y. the rest of your bay, very light. back to you. >> quite a jam later, thank you, mike. now to a developing story. national guard troops are fanned out throughout baltimore. protester hit the streets overnight leading to wide spread violence. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been tracking all of the latest developments for us. the protests broke up after a funeral for a man who died in police custody. >> freddie gray was buried yesterday in his family asked the community for calm. now thigh say they are appalled by the violence will and the violence is just wrong. 15 police officers were injured in that overnight violence. six of them are still in the hospital at last check. the baltimore police commissioner says that there were gang members in the crowd

aiming to do worse than putting them in the hospital. this is baltimore this morning. still smoldering in spots rooking like a war zone or a natural disaster. school is canceled for school children today and many businesses are telling their workers to just stay home. this three alarm fire destroyed a building that housed a community organization for youth and families and seniors. it is now a total loss. and this is how the night ended in baltimore, with city and state police standing side by side in riot gear and up to 5,000 national guard troops are available to baltimore. some of them are already on the ground. there's also a call for an additional 500 officers coming from neighboring agencies. now, those officers will hit the streets as baltimore's police commissioner made this startling revelation. >> the bloods and the crips had a meeting yesterday, validated and verified what they said, at the conclusion of mr. gray's funeral today, each group was intended to kill and take out a

police officer. >> the baltimore mayor is deflecting criticism this morning that she did not call for help soon enough. the governor insinuated as much himself. two dozen people were arrested but i suspect that that is going to climb. >> schools preemptively closed for today in baltimore as well. >> doing what they can. in the meantime, it affected the bay area. protesters in fact, small group, they marched in oakland overnight in honor of freddie gray as well. that protest was largely peaceful. the group marched from downtown oakland to the port and then back. a few windows were smashed at some businesses but no one was hurt. the story is changing by the minute. we're going to continue to bring you live updates throughout our newscast and when we're not on the air you can always logon to nbcbayarea.com for all the latest information. new video shows the moments when nepal was crippled.

you can hear glass breaking, debris flying through the air as the 7.8 earthquake shakes the capital city of kathmandu. >> the death toll right now now up to 4300 people as many stories of survival are still surfacing at this hour. that includes a bay area hiker. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie trong is live. this local hiker has a disturbing account. >> reporter: absolutely. good morning. very disturbing. witnessing people getting buried alive under rocks. thankfully dave gordon who lives here in san francisco able to tell that story because he survived. he was rescued earlier today. take a look at this new video that shows people digging with both their hands and shovels through piles of rubble to try to find any survivors trapped and of course to try to recover bodies. rescue crews found gordon in the area with his group of travelers. he said a lot of people are stuck on the trails badly damaged by the nepal quake as he made his way towards an airport terminal near kathmandu gordon recalled the terror he witnessed

maybe turn down the ac a little bit for today. good morning. >> or just leave it off all together as that natural ac returns to the bay area. happy tuesday. we made it through monday. you know what, we're going to see a couple really nice days. courtesy of this weak trough of low pressure. that's going to bring that beautiful ocean air all the way inland for today. for us we are actually getting drizzle as well this morning. mostly from gilroy all of the way north to san jose. you might have to use your windshield wipers. plenty of low clouds over there to start the day. in fact, we do have wide spread low clouds from santa rosa south to san francisco. little bit of clearing at this point in the oakland area and down the east shore. 53 degrees in concord. 54 degrees in san jose for today. temperatures are going to be comfortable because of that natural ac on strong for today. pleasant conditions. that will continue through tomorrow and then more changes headed your way. 78 degrees from the tri-valley today. 73 degrees on the peninsula. 75 degrees in the south bay.

that overcast start will make way for beautiful sunshine later on. gradually clearing between the hours of 12 and 2:00 p.m. and then we have even more of a change. maybe some showers return to the forecast. we'll give you the latest on that in my next report. but now though update from mike inouye. >> a little bit of progress. big deal if you're just joining us, huge crash activity going on blocking basically all of northbound 880. the basically is the progress. we do reportedly have at least one lane open. we'll check on that in one second. i do want to show you the scene, the backup and look at this. this is earlier this morning just after 3:00. look at the flames. this was undoubtedly a huge distraction from the southbound side as well. southbound traffic has been restored after that they put this fire out. looks dramatic and big concern we had five to seven vehicles possibly involved in this crash. the fire involved, that's why understand it, just one of the vehicles. no one was died as a result of this crash. let's get out there for a live shot. we do see a huge backup on the

northbound side. the headlights are coming southbound. the tail lights, now you see the flashing lights and tail lights going over the top of the hill there. that means one lane is open. chp says one lane hoping to remove traffic -- sorry, the crash from the other lanes shortly. so far, we do still have this. you see traffic flowing north toward us as they're traveling a little bit better. back out to the maps. amount of backup from 238 up to the scene is going to be a huge issue. get over to international to davis if you're north of 238 or take 580 westbound. that's your alternate. that's the big slowdown for the bay. the rest of the bay looking smooth. back to you. >> thanks for the update, mike. still ahead, he is accused of violating his patients while they're at their most vulnerable state. how a stanford technician ended up behind bars. >> we knew apple was going to have good news but man did they have good news. we'll go oef it coming up in business.

an update, now the breaking news at 5:14. overnight inferno. numerous cars, possibly upton seven involved in a huge crash on northbound 880 in san leandro. several lanes were blocked. most likely won't be open for some time this morning. we just recently know the far right lane has been open. this is between davis and 98th. mike inouye working on alternate routes for you. a stanford medical technician behind bars this morning after being accused of taking advantage of patients who were sedated. police yesterday arrested

55-year-old robert hassinger currently on leave from stanford's outpatient surgery center. that's in redwood city. co-workers reported seeing him inappropriately touching male patients while they wesedated i recovery rom. he targeted four patients between march 15th and april 2nd. right now he is facing sexual battery charges. do you recognize this man? he was caught on camera groping a young girl at a popular stanford shopping center. it happened sunday. palo alto police say this man followed the 12-year-old victim down an aisle and touched her inappropriately. he then ran off when the girl told her mother. 5:15. turns out there is such a thing as chemo brain. it's a term for the fuzzy wandering mind that some cancer patients complain of after undergoing chemotherapy. researchers at the university of british columbia say there are observable effects of chemo. brain scans reveal neurological signs of chronically disengaged

brain. when patients believe they were focusing on a task. the obsession with mobile devices is trickling down to toddlers. a new study shows more than one-third of babies have played with a tablet or smartphone by their first birthday. more than half of the parents surveyed say they use the devices as a way to calm down their fuss y bay sis. they discourage all forms of screen time for kids under the age of 2. >> speaking of screen time, a different kind of screen, expectations were already very high for sales in apple has done it again. ur is pricing investors with better numbers than forecast. >> scott mcgrew, apple opened to i verers and they loved what they saw. >> record new sales in china. china is now the biggest market for apple. the average iphone sold for more than $650. don't fool yourself. you pay $650 for your iphone. either right up front or through monthly payments on your cellphone bill. so, apple increased market share while at the same time raising

square in the middle of reporting season. all the companies around the u.s. making news with financial results. next up to bat for us, twitter and gopro. the two bay area companies report their profits after the bell. twitter has made a lot of changes lately. gopro shares have been very volatile. and speaking of volatile, greece continues its slow slide into bankruptcy. this morning this man, the greek we -- not this man, the greek prime minister says he is replacing this man. that guy is the finance minister and lead negotiator on the debt. i like him. he's kind of a little crazy and used to work in the video game industry. he seems to be rubbing the rest of the eu the wrong way. this morning he tweeted, they are unanimous in their hate for me, and i welcome their hatred. quoting fdr who said the same thing though fdr didn't do so on twitter. >> you like a little crazy. >> a little crazy. >> glance into the camera. that was borderline creepy. >> i like him. >> there you go.

>> all right. >> thank you, scott. keeping our eyes on what's going on on 880. we just got word all lanes have been reopened after a really bad crash but we'll check in with mike in just a moment. first, temperatures coming down. >> which is going to make the day a little bit easier for you. i know when it's hot out there just driving home from work can be a little bit more frustrating as we get into this afternoon, we're going to drop by a good ten, even 15 degrees. san francisco at lunchtime. 62 degrees. rounding out the day in the city by the bay and 55 degrees. much cooler. pleasant conditions to finish off. 75 degrees for us here in the south bay. so temperatures are going to be really nice. we also have this good to moderate air quality. this will continue. and this is really in part because of that beautiful, beautiful shower activity that we had over the weekend. we're tracking another chance for showers but not until we hit the long-range future. let's talk about what we are expecting. high pressure stays firm for today. although we are going to see enough of an onshore flow to

drop the temperatures. that will be the case for tomorrow as well. then we could be talking about fire winds by thursday and friday. potentially even saturday. temperatures are going to shoot right back up to where they were yesterday. so enjoy the next couple of days because this will be a short-lived cooling event. that dry pattern returns all of the way through the weekend. our next best chance for rain, always looking out for you as far as i possibly can. looks like may 6th to the 7th. it's hard to believe we just have three days left of april. here we go. take you into the next couple of days. temperatures staying steady for tomorrow. up to 88 degrees in the south bay. by thursday, staying just about as warm on friday. and then as we head throughout saturday still warm. still offshore flow but look at this, by the end of the day we're going to see those clouds return and, for us, that means more comfortable weather is on the way. so if if you're going to stay local, looking good to hit the 70 as i cross the board. if you want to get of tahoe we're getting into that time of year where boating and fishing is popular. stay tuned. in my next report i've got a

really serious warning for you. i have pictures that might just blow your mind. right now though, let's get the latest update. here's mike inouye. >> as laura and sam told you earlier, we did get confirmation that all lanes of northbound 880 are open. that's the lead for the story. fist butmp, boom, on the map. the nimitz freeway was closed this morning. look at the video we had from earlier just after 3:00. look at the flames shooting up. the car was facing the wrong direction. northbound 880 at davis or just north of there. all of this activity had four of your five lanes, all five lanes at some time closed for this morning's commute. they have reopened. let's get you out there again. we do have live cameras. the headlights are southbound but the tail lights going over the hill. we used to see traffic stacked up through the background of that scene but that has just cleared up over just the last few minutes. we'll get another shot from oakland and our coliseum. for the morning we were watching all folks stacked up here, all lanes are now clear again north

that disaster. today sentence is harsher to a november verdict to sentenced the captain to 36 years in prison. convicted of negligence and abandoning passengers in need. but his sentence was increased because the appeals court convicted him on homicide charges instead. l.a. county supervisors are expected to approve a settlement today over allegations the sheriff's department unfairly targeted minorities. u.s. department of justis accused the county and the city of palm dale of discriminating against african-american residents, particularly those living in low-income housing. the details of the settlement have not been release bud initially the justice department pegged the penalties at $12.5 million. the nation's largest canned tuna producer has charges in the gruesome death of a worker three years ago. they charged bumblebee foods with willfully violating safety, death of jose at the processing

several lanes were blocked for hours. at one point the chp did not know if it would be able to open the lanes in time for the morning commute. traffic is now moving, albeit a little bit slowly in that area. we're going to check in with mike inouye for the residual impacts of the crash. >> remnants is right that crash scene has opened up. that's the big headline. show you live pictures over there just where we had that closure, tail lights are now moving northbound through the area. let's take you out there to show you the dramatic video though. the crash that happened just after 3:00. crash, car fire, complete closure of the nimitz freeway for quite some time. all lanes are cleared. we'll show you that shot once again as you're traveling over that high rise at davis street. live crew over there. bob ridell says that all lanes are now clear and see the traffic flowing here. north of there you see everything moving smoothly from 98 past the coliseum. that's the set of head lights that had been blocked off for a period of time.

>> yes, dave gordon is alive to tell his story where so many are still unaccounted for. look at this new video caught on a cellphone in tibet which shows the moment when the 7.8 quake hit, triggering landslides and toppling buildings there. you hear the cries. helicopters continue to fly tourists and locals to safety including gordon flown out of the popular hiking area of long tong, 40 miles north of kathmandu. the san francisco man described how it crumbled killing four or five people during the rock fall. >> the trails are destroyed. a lot of trails are destroyed. people are stuck. they can't get out. it's very bad. >> reporter: that is why people continue to dig with both their hands and shovels to try and find any signs of life and to, of course, recover bodies. it's a desperate situation there with buildings flattened and hospitals overflowing.

as official death toll continues to grow, there's hope there are more stories like dave gordons trying to make their way back home. >> steph, thank you. in the meantime, resources pouring in there in nepal. we will have extensive coverage of the earthquake on our website nbcbayarea.com and if you would like to learn about how to get involved and make a donation, we posted information about how to help the victims on our home page as well. i want to help you get out the door if that's where you're headed. checking the temperatures with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you. yeah, i think a lot of people will be happy to hear the temperatures are going to be significantly cooler than yesterday. we had a couple of records out there. today, starting out in the 50s. by lunchtime in the 60s for most of us, except for the tri-val y tri-valley. north bay, two warmest microclimates will be in the 70s at that point. that's where you will stay. 9 in the north bay. 78 degrees in the tri-valley. i want to show you these amazing pictures out of tahoe. look at how low the lake is

because we didn't get that snowpack that we needed so desperately this year. this is having a big impact on people who live and work out here. these pictures are courtesy of la laketahoenews.net. it's showing how bad the drought has been in this area. we do have a couple of warnings for you. the coast guard actually had to move their boat launch to another pier. if you're going to be headed out there i'm going to give you tips in a moment. but the lake is at its lowest level since 1992. the second lowest level recorded in all of history since they've been keeping records. no longer providing water to the truckee river either. if you're going to be headed out there, a lot of marinas had to shut down and there are places where you're only going to find one area to launch your boat. so expect heavy lines. please be patient and courteous. coast guard urging you to watch out for exposed hazards that were not there last year. it's just really sad to see these pictures coming out.

they're trying to do whatever they can to fill up the lake and trying to dredge up sand from the shore and really push it towards these docks in order for people to get out there on the lake. but it's such a great place to visit this time of year. they do have a couple of ideas. we're going to talk more about this and your extended forecast coming up as we head throughout the next half hour together. right now we want to get you an update on that traffic alert. things seem to be improving. as you know, 880 is tough on a good day. >> exactly. improving is sort of a relative term. much better than a complete closure for the anymore it's in freeway. we talked about that northbound route still moving slowly from 238, north 880. slows to davis street where there was this crash earlier. this crash had a -- we have video with lots of flames at the scene. a little crash and fire. we had all lanes closed because of all of this activity, fire to possibly seven videos. bob ridell is going to give us an up date from this in a few minutes. chp told them and any other information we need to know. i'll focus on another shot over

an update to breaking news. fiery multicar wreck is causing havoc for the morning commute. you can see the flames shooting from one of the cars this was just after 3:00 this morning. the whole situation led to a hard closure of northbound 880 in san leandro. >> bob ridell is live where the lanes reopened less than 30 minutes ago. did it help to ease traffic, bob? >> reporter: absolutely. we're not seeing any residual. the accident was about a quarter mile from our location in the northbound direction, the brake lights right there are the northbound 880. you can see traffic. it's very normal for this time

of the morning on a tuesday morning. but this was the scene a good couple hours ago. you can see in this video a very serious accident. one car at least on fire, up to seven vehicles involved when these vehicles collided in a chain reaction collision around 3:00 this morning. the alameda county fire department telling us five people were hurt. one critically. one with moderate injuries. the other three declined transportation. and as you mentioned within the past 30 to 45 minutes, chp which had shut down all lanes in northbound 880 at one point creating this very, very serious backup. again, within the past 30 to 45 minutes, they did reopen all lanes of traffic. as you see, traffic is moving relatively smoothly for a tuesday morning here again. northbound 880 just knot of marina boulevard commit heexit san leandro.

as bob told you things have roved well right there at the scene. just a little farther north from bob and this is northbound 880 just north of 98 as you come up toward the coliseum we do see traffic flow smoothly. we saw all lanes blocked but now they're moving. we'll look at the map and show you the recovery that had to continue. we're now from red over to orange and that means speeds are coming up in towards 50 miles per hour. this is great on a this time on a tuesday without the crash. the crash over at the dublin interchange cleared to the shoulder. traditional slowing for the tri-valley. new crash north 101, that could be an issue. we'll get more details and send it back to you. happening today, the very future of same-sex marriage may be at stake in the u.s. supreme court. justices will hear arguments on a ban now in place in four states. >> "today in the bay's" tracie potts joining us live from washington outside the courthouse where we can hear demonstrators are gathering, tracie. public sentiment changed quickly on this topic. the question might be, is the

court doing to keep up. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you're right. the demonstrators have been out here for a while now. both for and against same-sex marriage. the loudest happen to be right behind us are against it. but that is not what we're seeing the public opinion. public opinion is not what the justices are going to be focusing on in this case. today the u.s. supreme court hears from couples who sued because their legal marriages in one state were not recognized in another. >> the state has not come up with any good reason, though it's traditional for man, we want to encourage opposite sex. those reasons do not justify the discrimination. >> reporter: the court will decide if equal protection mandates marriage be allowed for same-sex couples in all states. >> to stand up and say we matter, we count, it's humbling to know that could result in marriage equality from coast to

it is 5:46. to a developing story. national guard troops have taken up position around the city of baltimore to keep violent protesters under control. firefighters had to brave the crowds to fight several fires including a massive one at a senior citizen facility under construction. dozens were seen looting several different stores. the riots began an hour after the funeral for freddie gray, a man who died while in police custody. this morning some fires still smoldering and a state of emergency is still in effect in maryland. >> "today in the bay's" darcy spencer is live in downtown baltimore. darcy, what's the feeling on the streets this morning? >> reporter: well, oddly enough it feels very calm so far this morning. we're live right outside of city hall. if you take a look here, we have a national guard positioned here as well as married state police, some fencing has been erected around city hall here to protect the building. we're not sure if there was any

kind of threat made to city hall or if this is simply being done as precaution to make sure that nothing does, in fact, happen. we've seen a lot of devastation since yesterday, like you said. this violence broke out after freddie gray's funeral. and various businesses were set on fire. there was looting. there was rioting. more than a dozen police officers were injured. some of them remain in the hospital this morning. a couple of dozen protesters were arrested. but a lot of criminal acts were conducted yesterday. and a lot of those people remain at large. people responsible for fires, people responsible for looting stores. so there's a lot of police work still to be done. they're going to be going back and checking video and things like that to try to figure out who is behind some of these crimes. again, we're under a state of emergency and a curfew goes in effect 10:00 tonight until 5:00 tomorrow morning. we'll send it back to you. >> those officers no doubt on patrol there. threats against police

officers in baltimore are having a ripple effect on the west coast. the l.a. police department ordering officers to ride in pairs. this afterword of baltimore street gangs including cripps and bloods attempting to take out police officers. baltimore's police department is advising other agencies to take precautions to ensure safety of their officers. it's not clear how many agencies are heeding that warning. stay with us of course as this story continues to develop. kris sanchez monitoring the situation from our newsroom. she will have another live update in about is15 minutes. we'll switch gears in bring in meteorologist christina loren. ending april with a heat wave but that's not to last. >> no, the last couple of days of april will be up and down. so here's the deal. >> roller coaster. >> three days left of april. isn't that crazy in we're going to be in may before you know it. kids will be out for school. temperatures are going to go up and down this week. we're going to cool you right back off just in time for the

weekend. 55 degrees on the peninsula. 54 in the tri-valley. i'll show you how it all looks when we get to your extended forecast. remember, you don't have to wait for it. it's always scrolling there at the bat tom of your screen for your specific microclimate. we ought to put together six, seven days every morning. it's a labor of love. 73 on the peninsula for today. what you will notice is eight to ten degrees of cooling this afternoon. much more comfortable, especially in places where you lack those air conditioning units. san francisco and not a lot of people have the ac. the cooling clouds will stay with us for wednesday. heat cranks though by the end of the week thursday into friday. ing looking towards heat. just about as hot as it was on monday. so enjoy the next couple of days. 88 degrees by thursday in the south bay. 87 on friday. temperatures here in the south bay will be a touch cooler than what we're expecting in places like the north bay and tri-valley, 90s on the way there. saturday though, that's when the cooling kicks in our next round.

critical delays in a life and death situation at our postal facility in oakland. now the postal service is revising the national policy to instruct employees to call 911 right away. the usps office of inspector general credits our investigation for calling attention to the 911 policy. >> when we began to look at other policies with the postal service we saw there was a conflict. the policies were inconsistent and they didn't provide clear and consistent guidance for handling medical emergencies. >> tonight at 11:00 you will hear from congresswoman barbara lee about why she contacted postal service management after learning of the nbc bay area investigation. all right. now we have an update to bring to you follow-up on the sudden closure of dozens of college campuses. state leaders will meet with students who attend the schools, corinthian schools, to help them get their tuition reimburse. california based corinthian colleges closed all 28 campuses
