what the city is doing to try to calm the unrest. and our early taste of summer will simmer for today. much cooler conditions on the way to the bay area but it's not going to last forever. we'll tell you how long that natural ac will stay on. while we are watching san leandro we're also watching san jose where this backup made a little worse by two crashes in the south bay as well. live look outside on this tuesday morning. there's the foggy start. city bey the bay. it's april 28th. this is "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning the the thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. all lanes from 880 through san leandro are back open this morning following lowing this, wreck. as many as seven cars were involved in this near davis street. >> things were jammed as recently as an hour ago. "today in the bay's" bob ridell

live now in san leandro. bob, traffic though now moving well? >> reporter: well, moving as well as it can be on a tuesday morning commute. we are not seeing any residual backup from that accident. that was cleared, as you mentioned, just a little bit after 5:00 this morning. taking place in a northbound direction of 880 just north of marina here in san leandro toro brake lights by the way, for reference, are your northbound direction. you can see how serious this accident was when it happened around 3:00 this morning. it was a chain reaction collision involving up to seven vehicles. the impact so severe that one of those cars, you can see, caught fire. alameda county fire department tells us that five people were injured. one critical, one with moderate injuries. the other three deknnying the request to be transported. they were able to get out op their own. as a result, chp did issue a sig alert and shut down northbound 880 for a good portion of the

time. but as i mentioned, they did reopen all lanes at 5:00 this morning. as you can see behind me back out here live, that traffic is moving relatively smoothly again for a tuesday morning commute. reporting live here northbound 880 just north of the marina boulevard in san leandro, bob ridell, "today in the bay." >> now let's bring in mike inouye. pretty good news if you're just leaving the house this morning. >> for two hours we had lanes closed. normally that's a huge issue for the entire morning commute but this morning as bob said, looking good for a tuesday. look at our speed sensors. if you missed the reason why, full closure, this crash, this fiery crash scene over there in san leandro. that was blocking lanes going on northbound at about davis or marina. this was the worst of the scene with the lanes closed and the fire going on there. fortunately in case you missed it, no one died but there were injuries and it took about two hours to clear. let's get out to the maps. smoother flow now well cleared on the castro valley y and that

burst coming in out of the tri-valley. nothing really unusual except for perhaps a little lighter flow. that's unusual. the bay bridge toll plaza experiencing more traffic and backup there. quick look at san jose, i did want to touch on that. focus is shifting from san leandro's earlier problem to san jose, two crashes northbound 101 right around 880. i'll show you the walk around and give you the other route throughout the south bay. coming up, back to you. new video this morning where the earthquake nearly leveled the entire country of nepal. the number of dead now stands at more than 5,000. this is many stories of survival are also surfacing including that of a san francisco man. >> "today in the bay" stephanie trong joins us live from san francisco this morning with more on this story. just seeing this new video, quite emotional for the people that were just running for cover. this man has a story, too,

steph. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. good morning to you both, laura and sam. even as that death toll rises there is hope for more stories like that of dave gordon who lives here in san francisco. he survived. he was rescued earlier today. take a look at this video that shows another perspective of all this with people digging with their hands, with anything they can find with shovels through tall piles of rubble to find any survivors who have been trapped. rescue crews found gordon in the longtong area with his group of travelers. a lot of people are stuck on the hiking trails badly damaged by the nepal quake at kathmandu. gordon recalled the terror he witnessed this weekend. >> violent earthquake. cliffs come down. cliffs come down. four or five quarters deceased, buried in the rock fall. >> reporter: and hospitals there are overflowing.

lines of people still waiting to identify their missing loved ones. the u.s. embassy in kathmandu has opened its doors to shelter american citizens. meantime, helicopters are trying to bring out survivors, locals and tourists. still many feared missing and dead in that quake. live in france this morningsh stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> recovery efforts are on going as is our extensive coverage. you can go to nbcbayarea.com and find the latest information posted about how the help the victims. the you want all the details check out nbcbayarea.com. 6:05. the city of baltimore is assessing the damage after a long night of violent and destructive riots. angry protesters het civil fires and looted businesses and now national guards troops are on the ground to help control the situation. all the unrest came after family and friends said their final

good-byes. >> those same people asking for peaceful protests. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been following this escalating situation all morning long. kris, baltimore's mayor is hoping a curfew will help keep the calm. >> it starts at 10:00 tonight and it will last all week long. there are concerns because people think they're going to be a lot of young folks on the streets today as school was canceled in baltimore and that that could create a problem in and of itself. 15 plolice officers were injure. six ended up in the hospital as baltimore police commissioner said three violent gangs were planning more than mere injury. this is baltimore this morning still smoldering in spotsing looking like a war zone or natural disaster. many businesses telling their workers to stay home and, again, school is out of session. this is a three alarm fire that destroyed a building that housed a community organization. it was brand new. and now it is a total loss. the night ended this way in baltimore with city and state police standing side by side in

riot gear. national guard troops are positioned outside city hall this morning. 5,000 in all are available to the city. and those officers and those national guard troops will hit the streets today as baltimore's police chief revealed a credible threat that three violent gangs are working together to, quote, take out white police officers. >> the bloods and the cripps had a meet yesterday validated and verified what they said at the conclusion of mr. gray's few ral today, each group was intended to kill and take out a police officer. >> reporter: one proes thor trying to block a s.w.a.t. team so you can just see how things escalate so quickly. more than two dozen people were arrested last night. several dozen were arrested over the weekend during several different protests there. and we have yet to hear from the mayor of baltimore this morning who is under heavy criticism for

not calling for help a bit sooner. >> thank you very much, kris. as you well know here in the bay area small group of protesters marched in oakland oef nighting in honor of freddie gray. the man that was buried. that protest was largely peaceful. the group marched from downtown oakland to the port and back. a few windows were smashed at some businesses but no one was hurt. we will continue to following this story all morning long. kris sanchez will join was another update. we'll also take you live to baltimore coming up in our next half hour. time to check your microclimate forecast right now as we give you a live look outside the bay bridge from emoeryvill emeryville. similar conditions to what we did when we looked at the embarcadero a couple minutes ago. the low clouds. >> the low clouds are going to keep us cool later on today after that quick blast of summer heat came on very strong for your monday. we got more of that in the forecast. for today though, let's take you through your day. starting out in the 50s to 60s.

for most of us at lunchtime today you will be in the low 70s. at noon as you break for lunch on a tuesday in the north bay. same for the tri-valley. round out the day in the 70s in the tri-valley and elsewhere. mid 70s in the south bay and on the beautiful peninsula. temperatures are going to drop off courtesy of the area of low pressure. you can see these clouds coming in. we've got a nice steady onshore flow for today. and that cool ocean air will move all of the way inland as a result. so we're looking good there. this morning though you will see plenty of low clouds, a little fog as you head oef the moun mountains. watch out, getting drizzle at this point from gilroy all of the way to san jose. so your weather headlines tell the story. eight to ten degrees cooler for today. getting into tomorrow. staying nice and steady. with another round of fog to start. and then as we get into the weekend and this week, we're talking about heat cranking for thursday into friday. and then temperatures tumbling yet again saturday into sunday.

so our roller coaster ride of temperatures will continue. we also have a very slight chance for some showers in the extended forecast. that could improve. right now he is busy, traffic tuesday living up to that name this morning, mike. >> it's not necessarily because of the volume, it's the crashes and severity. i will update san leandro for those who have missed the last couple updates. over here, northbound 101. traffic is jammed right here through san jose. look at this stretch. at 680/280 but it starts right there all of the way past the earlier crash at brokaw. another one just north of there. we have a slower drive past the airport. 101 a tough drive 87 now starting to see a little more traffic and 280 northbound off with that 101/280 interchange will likely see more traffic. folks trying to get out of that backup. that south bay is a major focus right now. the tri-valley is looking normal

now. 580 heading south on 680 as well as 880 shows a smooth typical build in towards fremont. we did have that earlier full closure for san leandro but let's look north of the san mateo bridge and it's actually looking pleasant. the bay bridge. we'll talk about that in a second. i want to focus over here towards san leandro area where northbound routes. back at speed for that stretch. that was completely closed by an earlier crash. in fact, bob ridell was out there covering the crash and he'll give another update coming up on the details but right now camera shows you the taillights going away from us completely moving at speed heading north past davis marina and coliseum until they slow down a bit through downtown and bay bridge toll plaza. all lanes are baghdad up but the fast track lanes are moving better. we don't usually see that much visible movement. i know you chuckle. that's better. that's better. it is. for the bay bridge toll plaza any movement in the fast track lane that's visible. >> you feel like you're going somewhere. >> there are low clouds.

that is an issue but not so much for the drivers. it is the day millions of americans have been waiting for. the supreme court set to hear arguments in a landmark hearing on same-sex marriage. apple absolutely blows away investors with good news. and we'll talk about television and why not.

recounting his harrowing tale. a helicopter team rescued dave gordon 40 miles north of kathmandu shlths battle over same-sex marriage iks a place today. justices will listen to arguments on keeping the gay inch what ban intact in four states and whether the states must recognizerecognize marriag other states. scott mcgrew, apple selling more iphones in china than anywhere else in the world. >> even the yuts. united states. at least in the past quarter. it raised prices and increased market share. apple gets $650 per iphone. don't fool yourself, you're paying that $650. whether it's all once or part of your monthly cellphone bill. am also increased the payout that shareholders get and dividend and increased their rate at which it buys back

stock. all fogood news for investors. tim cook did talk about the watch a bit with reporters. watch sales aren't included in the latest numbers but he said it was going well. some reporters thought they heard of a lack of enthusiasm about it but cook repeated, i'm thrilled. i don't know how to make it more clear than that. apple shares hit new highs. apple as a company is now worth $770 billion. the gdp of saudi arabia is 7$75 billion. speaking of rockets towards the heavens, spacex had another successful launch of falcon rocket lifting a tv out of space for the country's first tv satellite, the launch was successful. spacex did not try to land its first stage back on barge. you recall this happened before where they tried to do it and the rocket keeps blowing up. now it wasn't because of all the crashes. first stage it lands needs extra fuel and extra weight because it

has the extra legs that support it. they couldn't do it this time. when you launch a tv satellite into space, you've got to put it out in geo syncronis in orbit. they needed more fuel, couldn't spare the weight. they'll try next time. >> the definition of geosyncron, in is orbit. >> you can watch tv. >> very impressive. >> thank you have been much, scott. it is ha-ha what we's kille volcano shows no sign of slowing down. >> these are new usgs images of the summit of kilauea. they're within a few feet of the crater rim. also more than 30 feet higher since saturday. the lake has been mostly active since it opened up seven years ago but the evil wills are usually much 6:17.

check the microclimate forecast. taking a live look outside. you can make out the cars on the golden gate bridge but not so much the span. some fog satarting out our day, christina. >> welcome sight. good morning to you, sam and laura. the time is 6:18. as you're getting yourself ready, maybe your getting the kids ready for school you will probably need a jacket for most of the day. temperatures staying cool because of that fog at the coast. but you can ditch it by lunchtime. just about everywhere. we're starting out at 54 degrees in livermore. 54 in san martin. want to show you what it looks like right now from the district, san francisco. lots of fog out there. if we head throughout the day today the clouds will make way for a pleasant comfortable afternoon. temperatures only in the 70s. no 80s op the map for today. then we have changes coming your way as we get into the next couple of days. tomorrow things are steady. as we head throughout thursday

and friday we've got pretty dry winds from the hills moving to the sea. as a result we could see elevated fire danger. we're watching for that as offshore flow picks up thursday into friday. we're doing to stay dry through the weekend. i'm always looking at the long range data for you. looks like our next chance for showers will be may 6th and 7th. it looks impressive. we're going to keep you updated. it's still a ways out. uncertainty pretty high. any longer than seven days. we're going to keep watching it though. if it's going to get better we're going to let you know as soon as i do. into the atitys by thursday and friday as this offshore flow picks up. cooling you right back down to the 70s as we head throughout this weekend. spectacular bay area weekend for outdoor plans. just a touch cooler on sunday than what we're expecting on saturday. he's a busy man. you're watching a couple of things in san jose. and, yeah, on the 880 up the east shore as well. what's going on out there, mike? >> not split focus i'm well focus and both issues.

northbound 101. this is slowing. 680 is at the top of your screen. jammed up to 880. we'll show you on the map, it's extending more by a crash involving a motorcycle. i don't know about any major injuries but i do have a major slow down that started and now capital expressway and jamming down around that camera shot where we showed you past the airport. now the good news is 280 northbound is showing a break than i expected but now starting see a slower drive in 280. some folks using that as an alternate to 101. that ripple effect 457s throughout the south bay. that's about it for silicon valley. over towards the tri-valley, we had a stall as you are approaching here but that's cleared to the shoulder. lighter volume going down towards stallout and 680 through pleasanton and smooth traffic through sunol. across the san mateo bridge you're starting to build over toward the peninsula. we're going to look at san

leandro. let me show you this video that we have earlier. huge concern earlier, all lanes closed at 3:00. just after 5:00 this morning we had this crash, believe it or not, cleared without any dadly results. that is better news for your morning commute. we look back at the maps and see a full recovery for the speeds. that's great because tuesday having heavier flow of traffic we expected this to be a problem. there's oak had, san leandro heading up toward the bay bridge toll plaza. just a little slowdown starting for your east shore freeway. the metering lights at the bay bridge you're on. we have a crash in antioch. nothing big for highway 4. pittsburgh and bay point. no major issues as far as the speed sensors but the live look at the golden gate bridge. you see the low clouds. so far you're all right. missed perhaps a wipe or two of the windshield wipers but no problems reported by drivers or by the chp. back to you. right now at 6:21 on your tuesday. very close call captured on camera. suv just misses several kids as

yep, we're getting shrouded in a little bit of fog, some clouds. we'll check the forecast with christina coming up. it is 6:24 right now. new research suggests women may have a more difficult time recovering from a concussion than men. the study from taiwan was published in the journal radiology. 30 concussion patients underwent mri screenings within one month of their injury, then again at six weeks. both sexes showed changes in brain circuits linked to working 34e memory but men returned to the normal pattern by six weeks while women continued to have decreased activity. obsession with mobile devices is now trickling down to toddlers. a new study show that more than one-third of babies have played with a tablet or a smartphone by their 1st birthday. more than half of the parents surveyed said they use those devices as a way to calm their fussy babies down. new pacifiers. american academy of pediatrics discourages all forms of screen time for kids under the age of 2. new video of a very close call. some parents out there may be

though it's not clear what caused the crash. bob ridell is live in san leandro with what he's learned from officers. going to be checking in with bob in a couple of minutes. crowds have been lining up for days to witness what may be a historic supreme court hearing. justices will hear arguments on an ongoing gay marriage ban and whether all states must recognize same-sex unions. "today in the bay's" tracie potts live outside the court where protests have also been going on. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: protests on both sides, laura. good morning, two years ago when we were last here on this issue it was about the federal law and also about opposing same-sex marriage in california. today, the court is looking at two different issues, focusing on how same-sex marriage is or is not recognized in different states. today the u.s. supreme court hears from couples who sued because their legal marriages in one state were not recognized in

another. >> the state has not come up with any good reason, although it's traditional for man to want to encourage opposite sex people to marry. those reasons do not justify the discrimination. >> reporter: the court will decide if equal protection mandates marriage be allowed for same-sex couples in all states. >> to stand up and say we matter, we count, it's humbling to know that that could result in marriage equality from coast to coast. >> reporter: jane rouse and april are suing for the right to adopt each other's kids after a near miss accident made jane realize she would not be allowed to raise april's daughter. >> she loses me and her brothers, and that's what really scared us the most, was that possibility that they could be ripped apart. >> reporter: opponents argue it's a question for each state to decide. >> supreme court justices have no greater insight on to how to answer that question than you or i have. >> reporter: now behind me those

79 degrees in the north bay. in the tri-valley looking towards really comfortable conditions. 78 there. right under room temperatures on the peninsula, 73 for you and 75 degrees for us right here in the beautiful silicon valley. so eight to ten degrees cooler for most of you today. we are going to see some other cities at the immediate coast tumble by a good 20 degrees from yesterday's highs. pacifica right here, one of those cities. cooling clouds will stay for wednesday. as we get into the end of the week the heat will surge yet again. cranking up the numbers toward near record levels. up and down roller coaster ride continues. now, laura was just inquiring about this. the pollen levels creeping up. they certainly have been and they're going to peak as we get into your thursday. so even higher by thursday. just remember to keep that allergy medicine handy if you are someone who suffers from the predominant offenders of the season. that's oak, cedar, pine, and grass this time of year. it is springtime. obviously it's an issue so just

keep in mind pieaking on thursday. upcoming weekend with the return of onshore flow. this the something that we need to talk about. lake tahoe is historically low. they were having a real problem getting boats into the water. if you're going to head up here for fishing or boating, i have a couple of things to point out. this is going to be in my next report and more stunning i images. the drought is taking its toll on both south and northlake areas. details in just moments. right now let's check your drive. it's been a tough one, mike. >> it's been a pretty tough one. start in san jose where we have a slower drive and also talk about san leandro where it was a spectacular crash this morning and i don't mean good spectacular. looking at northbound 101 underneath what looks like what christina was showing you. she was showing you a pier that should be at lake level but this is the high rise and over passes. 101 at 680, 280 interchange. traffic is jammed. the map is jammed back from capital expressway up in toward

the area. slower drive as you travel up past 880 toward a crash involving a motorcycle. we still have your left lane blocked from what i understand. 80 northbound. 87 showing more traffic flow. folks are taking capital expressway over there. so far the ripple effect not so bad for the south bay. the tri-valley and east bay looking at southbound 680 and 880 slow south from 580 down to fremont. actually a light pattern considering that it is a tuesday and we typically see a heavy flow of traffic. i want to talk about the san leandro. we had this overnight crash there northbound 880 and that completely closed the roadway that had a fire and a number of cars involved. there you go. quite a scene in northbound through san leandro was blocked. north of 238. that actually recovered after a full closure for almost an hour. almost two hours lanes were basically effected except for that one lane that was open for just a short period of time. bob is going to give us the details on what happened here and what's going on and the latest but so far show you the traffic effect.

live look at oakland north of there had this camera on that crash. all lanes are open. you see traffic flowing smoothly, close to the limit past the coliseum. south of there, the san mateo bridge moves over toward the peninsula as well. slower drive here. there are metering lights actually not knowing about that. san mateo bridge has metering lights they just don't use them and metering lights are slow at the bay bridge toll plaza as wi well. >> i didn't know there was a place that didn't use metering lights. >> maybe they're going to have to start. we'll see. >> little known facts, mike inouye. 6:37. the markets have been open. apple reporting yesterday. let's see how things are doing. >> food morning. apple absolutely blowing away investors, sam. apple is i'd traing near 52-week hyatt $133. $134 is the 52-week high. 32 points, 18070. the fed starts the two-day meeting today. there's not going to be a ton of action i don't think except apple doing well. back to you. >> not bad. all right. still ahead on nbc bay area

we have national changes to tell you about this morning. prompted by one of our nbc bay area investigations. it has to do with outdated rules at the u.s. postal service. those rules instruct eed employs to contact supervisors and security guards before calling 9 is 1 during an emergency. the policy may have caused critical delays in a life and death situation in oakland if postal service is revising national policy to instruct employees to call 911 right away. the usps office of inspector general credits our investigation for calling attention to the 911 policy. >> when we began to look at other policies we saw there was a conflict. the policies were inconsistent and they didn't provide clear and consistent guide again for handling medical emergencies. >> this evening at 11:00 you will hear directly from

congresswoman bar frbara lee wh she contacted the postal service manager after learning about the investigation. pleasive g us a call at 1 of h 888-996-tips or e maul us. it is 6:41. new details on the tragic and disturbing killing of a 9-year-old boy in discovery bay. his accused attacker admits he stabbed the boy to death. jailhouse interview 18-year-old william shultz told the bay area news group he stabbed jordan almgren because he says he wanted to feel what it was like to kill someone. before what he called the coming of the end of the world. shultz' family had called deputies just the day before the attack asking for a mental health evaluation. responding officers determined he did not meet the criteria for a mental health hold. he's now in jail being held on $1 million bail. >> so much grief there. 6:41 on your tuesday. coming up next, an update to breaking news.

now to a developing story. right now the city of baltimore still assessing the damage after a long night of violence and

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been following this escalating situation all morning long. kris, baltimore's mayor is hoping a curfew will help keep the calm. >> there is that week long curfew, 10:00, and classes are canceled and many businesses are telling their workers to stay home as well. nbc's ron mott is in baltimore. we know that there are national guard troops on the ground. some of them not far from where you are, but this american criticism of the mayor for not calling thor those troops sooner and we have yet to hear from the your this morning, right? >> we heard from the mayor, governor, a lot of city us a shuffles trying to reassure the public they're doing everything

possible to prevent a repeat of what happened last night if police admit that they were, as they said, out flanked and out th thatmaneuvered by what they're calling criminals and thugs, not protesters. a very different approach today going forward. we'll see if it works. a lot of worry, there's a lot of grievance still. this goes well beyond freddie gray, the man who was -- died in police custody last week. and there's a sense of people here feeling as if they've been left out, a history of police brutality here allegedly. a lot of things coming to the surface. again, city officials are saying they're going to do everything possible to prevent a repeat of last night. dozens of people arrested. more than a dozen police officers injured, some still in the hospital. a very difficult day going forward here perhaps. we'll see what happens. back to you. >> some unbelievable video that we saw just a moment ago. and looking at where you are right now, you can be in a war zone from the looks of it.

>> it's pretty bad. there are places around the city where there is debris in the street, there's glass. this is what used to be a community center that was under construction. it turns into a three alarm fire last night that blazed for a long time. utility trucks are here now trying to secure gas lines and power poles and so forth to make sure there are no further problems. at this point though, things are relatively calm. of course, anything is calmer than what happened here last night. just a really stunning, surprising scene across this major city, baltimore is a city of some 600,000 people. agency square miles. sixth largest police force in the country. and a lot of pressure here going forward. >> thank you very much, ron mott, in baltimore this morning. baltimore police commissioner revealed what the department considered a credible threat that three violent street gangs were working together to, quote, take out police officers. and late last night family members of freddie gray, the man who died in police custody, called for peace ahead of his funeral and ahead of that

violence. they begged the city for calm so they could lay him to rest. >> i want to get justice for my son but don't do it like this. don't tear up the whole city just for him. wrong. >> and this may be the video of the day. the thing that you might be talking about was shot by the abc affiliate in baltimore. that woman there in the yellow is a mother who reacted very strongly after spotting her son wearing a mask throwing a rock at police officers. she dragged him away saying rioting is not right. took him toward her car. baltimore police commissioner praised her saying he wished more parents would make sure that they knew where their kids were and keep them out of that volatile situation. you can see more of that on the "today" show right after our newscast. >> all right. thank you very much, kris. in fact, a small group of protesters marched in oakland overnight in honor of freddie gray. that protest was largely peaceful. the group march fred downtown oakland to the port t and back.

a few windows were smashed at some businesses but no one was hurt. though one person was cited. the "today" show as she mentioned picks up our coverage this morning of the developing story. just a few minutes. again, you can watch ron alan's full report coming up at 7:00 on "today." east bay, update to breaking news. smooth sailing on i 880 this morning after a fiery crash around 3:00 snarled traffic from for more than an hour overnight. >> "today in the bay's" bob ridell live in san leandro now with the latest. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. this was a chain reaction collision that happened around 3:00 this morning. about a quarter mile from where we're standing here on northbound 880 just north of the marina boulevard exit in the northbound direction. brake lights are heading northbound right there on northbound 880 in san leandro. and you can see from this video just how severe this impact was with the vehicles. up to seven cars. the impact so severe that one of

the cars caught fire. alameda county fire department saying that there were five people who were injured. one critically, one with moderate injuries. the other three were treated and released on the scene. as a result, chp did have to call for a sig alert which meant that northbound 880 just past marina boulevard was shut down entirely for a good portion of the early, early morning commute. i'm talking between 3:00 and 5:00 this morning. it was around 5:00 this morning that they finally reopened those lanes and now what you have is just a normal tuesday morning commute with a slow and go here northbound 880 through san leandro just north of marina boulevard. reporting live here in san leandro, bob ridell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. >> standard congestion now. let's bring in mike inouye to see how things are rolling out there. good thing that one was cleared up. >> good news. they are rolling like you said, as bob said, pretty standard. with the exception, it's a little lighter than standard

over here northbound 880. all morning for two hours of closure we had our camera trained on northbound 880 that closed that has reopened just after 5:00. look at the good recovery. we'll show you the maps that you have a smooth drive. you're at the speed. limit for green sensors for 880 as well as 580 up toward the bay bridge toll plaza. it's maze where things start to clog up as we zoom out we will show you the entire approach highway 4 and same thing for lafayette area and upper east shore freeway. the bay bridge toll plaza to show you the backup because the metering lightses are on and all lanes are full. fast track lanes are moving well. the lanes right here. starting to slow down a bit as with el. low clouds offer around the vis it is not a problem for drivers across the bridge or across the san mateo bridge either. the north bay shows slowing because the cloud cover gets closer there but this is westbound 92 starting to jam up. the peninsula will start slowing as well as a result. let's get you back out to the maps because we do have that slowing across the bay. earlier crash at foster city looks like everything is cleared

off to the shoulder through west 92. we have a smoother drive northbound routes for southbound freeway except for this one. north 101 there was a crash early. it's caused the backup. only one lane is blocked. look how far this backup extends. red means it's below 20 miles per hour. huge stretch of slower drive. it will get you around some of that or 87 coming straight up into downtown. folks taking capital expressway adding more traffic. watch the parkway. as mike mentioned, low clouds out there this morning. this as we give you a live look outside. san jose still cloudy there, too. part of our overall microclimate forecast. >> it's okay. we like a good bay area morning around here, right, christina? >> certainly do. we are going to talk about what's going on in tahoe. let's get to the right here right now. whenever you wake up and you see these low clouds spanning inland like we do in san jose at this point, yeah, you can be assured it's going to be a nice

go. look at these stunning images from lake tahoe where the lake level is historically low this this comes to us from laketahoenews.net. they give us permission to use these pictures it is breathtaking how bad it is. they're try took creative on how to get the boats off the dock sboond the water. we have a word of caution for anybody headed out there. i'm going to get to that in a moment. what you need to know though, the coast guard was forced to move their boat launch to another pier. the lake is at the lowest level since 1992. and they are no longer providing water to the truckee river. if you're going to be headed out there this is what you need to keep in mind. police be patient and courteous at both launches. they're very limited in om places. you're only going to find one or two open. watch out for exposed hazards that weren't there last year, rocks, shallow shoals, more on this and the drought of course right here on nbc bay area and nbcbayarea.com. back to you, sam and laura.

new video this morning of the exact moments that that powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake nearly leveled the entire country of nepal. the number of dead right now is at more than 5,000 people and climbing. we're hearing another 250 people are missing after a mudslide in the village near the epicenter of the quake. this as many stories of survival are also surfacing this morning including that of a san francisco man. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang has more on this story. >> good morning to you. dave gordon of san francisco alive to tell his story. he survived but he watched people get buried alive under falling rocks. just a tragic situation. check out the video we've got of the hospitals that are overflowing there in nepal. countless people still desperately waiting to identify their loved ones while

potters will rally at san francisco city hall today as u.s. supreme court begins hearing arguments on the controversial issue. the justices are hearing appeals surrounding same-sex marriage bans in four different states. at issue here, whether the bans are constitutional. if they are, do those states have the right to discriminate against married gay couples from other states. same-sex marriage is legal in 36 states including california. who is the best paid ceo in all the land? this might not be your first guess. it's a fellow from santa cruz. >> scott mcgrew, nick woodman of gopro better paid than tim cook of apple. >> astonishing. in the past year, yeah. bloomberg total i'd all up found out after he got more than $200 million in company shares he was the best compensated ceo in the year 2014. we bring this up as we wait for gopro to announce its quarterly profits this afternoon. let's see if woodman earned his pay. as for tim cook he had a blowout quarter. apple reporting it sold more

temperatures in the 50s. make way out the front door, 60s and 70s by lunchtime. rounding out the day at about 79 degrees for the north bay. 73 on the peninsula . if you missed your seven-date forecast and when the heat will surge again, no worries, we will have it for you every 15 minutes throughout the "today" show. >> what about the morning commute? >> one of the big stories was this spectacular crash. let's show folks in case they miss eed it. full freeway closed as a result of a crash. car fire, seven vehicles were involved at one point. all lanes closed for a period of time this morning. almost two hours for it to clear. we'll look at your maps and we do see a smoother drive now that all of that activity has cleared. no deadly -- nothing deadly as a result of that crash. i'm sorry. this crash wut not a fatality situation. we have injuries though and we have a smoother drive as a result of the clearing. this is actually pretty unusual for a friday. a slower build does happen as we come out of the tri-valley and toward the san mateo bridge. there may be a crash on that flat section.
