breaking news right now on "early today." good morning, i'm dara brown. the eyes of americans across the country remain fixed on the city of baltimore. the overnight curfew ended just a short time ago. unsettled peace. last night in the wake of so much chaos, this week relative calm smoke filled the air after initial outbreaks of resistance around 10:00 p.m. curfew. it was tense but not violent. members of the community called for peace. >> leave the officers alone! >> our correspondents on the ground say it became quiet with national guard humvees rolling through empty streets. the last few days have taken their toll.

today in an unprecedented move for major league baseball, the orioles will play in front of empty seats at camden yards in the interest of fan safety. now yesterday, president obama condemned the violence and looting but said, this isn't a new problem. >> this has been a slow-rolling crisis, this has been going on a long time. this is not new. and we shouldn't pretend that it's new. >> nbc's tracie potts is live in baltimore with the very latest. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: things were fairly quiet overnight compared to the night before. certainly throughout the city. schools are reopening, orioles are playing, although to an empty stadium and police are trying to keep calm throughout the city. baltimore police say there was relative calm on the first night of the curfew less than a dozen arrests compared to 200 monday. >> we do not have a lot of activity or movement throughout the city as a whole, so the

curfew is in fact working. >> reporter: officers in riot gear cleared the streets with smoke canisters and urged residents to back up. after some initial resistance they complied. >> we don't want any problems with the police. we don't want anyone hurt. we don't want anyone shooting. we don't want anything. we want a cease-fire. >> today questions remain about the arrest and death of freddie gray. he suffered a severed spine while in police custody. demonstrators are demanding accountability. >> we've got to listen to our children. let me tell you, this is without a doubt, the civil rights cause for this generation. >> reporter: baltimore fairly quiet this morning but still a city on edge bursting with frustration waiting for answers. so the curfew is up for now. it's back on at 10:00 tonight and every night through monday. dara. >> thanks tracie. while rioting and looting have

been widely condemned and widely covered, peaceful protesters say their message is being drowned out. >> the peaceful protesters aren't being heard. nobody wants to report on that, it seems. a lot of times we tell our children to be peaceful, talk about it in a positive way. but if that's not getting a response and the only time they are getting a response is when violence occurs what message are we sending to them. >> they struck out in ways that did not make sense to us. if we were kids it would make sense to them. i was not exactly happy but i understand the frustration. i understand the hurt and the anger that causes you to lash out at anything and everything around you because people have told you for your entire life that it doesn't really matter. >> there's hundreds of freddie gray's. there's a lot of deaths in this town that does not get reported. what happens is they go through the judicial system and they don't get any justice at all. so what you're basically hearing right now and what you're seeing

quake. this video was taken saturday. on mt. everest, more rescues. 100 stranded climbers have finally been brought down to safety. hundreds of kidnapped women have been rescued in a remote region of nigeria. nigerian military forces say the 200 girls and 93 women were being held captive by boko haram militants. officials say the women who have been freed do not include any of the schoolgirls kidnapped last year from chibok. that kidnapping sparked the bring back our girls movement. according to the nigerian army the rescued women are being screened and profiled. now to washington, the u.s. supreme court heard arguments on whether same-sex marriage should be legal nationwide. inside the courtroom an opponent of same-sex marriage had to be escorted out when he interrupted proceedings. nbc justice correspondent pete williams reports. >> reporter: outside the court, boisterous crowds on both sides of the issue, one that's deeply personal to people like thomas. he decided to get married four years ago in new york to army

sergeant about to deploy to afghanistan. when the army ordered them to move tennessee refused to consider them married. >> being in the military, you can't say i don't want to go there. >> reporter: 36 states allow same-sex couples to marry. they say it should be up to people not courts. the supreme court conservatives seem to agree. >> people feel differently about something if they have a chance to vote on it than if it's imposed on them by courts. >> reporter: and states that ban gay marriage say keeping the traditional definition encourages opposite sex couples to get married and have children. the court's liberals didn't think much of that. >> you're not taking away anything from heterosexual couples. they would have the very same incentive to marry. all the benefits that come with marriage that they do now. >> reporter: the court seemed split 4-4 with justice anthony kennedy likely the deciding vote. although he said the traditional definition has been around for millennia, he said allowing gay couples to marry gives them

respect. >> same-sex couples say, of course we understand the nobility and sacredness of marriage. we know we can't procreate but we want the other attributes of it in order to show that we too have a dignity that can be fulfilled. >> that was nbc's pete williams reporting. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with oh dare i say a rather nice forecast. >> i'd say probably 90% of the country has a beautiful easy forecast for the middle of the week, hump day. south florida is not one of them. by far the worst weather overnight and early this morning has been here in south florida. soaking rain a lot of lightning strikes. that squall line is now heading down through the florida keys. also a little rain through the southeast today from atlanta to charleston, a little rain. nothing too bad out there. get better as the afternoon goes on. the middle of the country there's nothing at all. we have a very weak frontal system trying to push through the west. it's about as weak as it possibly can get.

very little precipitation with this at all. you barely even notice it's moving through, even a little wind shift and that's it. we're also starting to get very toasty and hot in areas of the desert southwest approaching some of the warmest temperatures of the season and of the year. areas like phoenix have a good chance of getting up to near 100 degrees over the next couple of days. i know thursday is going to be very close. we should be somewhere maybe right around 96 or 98. it looks like we're going to be starting off and looking pretty good as we go towards the upcoming weekend, if you like the very warm weather and finally jump into your pool. 75 today in denver 80 salt lake city san francisco 67. we'll be about 94 today in eas like northern california and the coast, that's cooler.

if contact cannot be restored in the next few days the capsule will run out of fuel and fall into the earth's atmosphere. now it's time to get down to business on this wednesday. in a surprise move the nfl is giving up its tax exempt status and will file tax returns for the 2015 fiscal year. after some lawmakers questioned the league's status, commissioner roger goodell wants to "eliminate this distraction that has been mischaracterized repeatedly in recent years." the nfl has been tax-exempt since 1942. one bud light slogan has fallen flat. the beer company has come under fire on social media accused of promoting rape culture. it used the slogan "the perfect beer for removing no from your vocabulary for the night" on a bottle label. anheuser-busch apologized for the slogan. it said it would never condone disrespectful or irresponsible behavior. it's part of its #upforwhatever campaign. hulu inked a licensing deal for all 180 episodes of

i mentioned today is going to be a nice day but also much warmer than it should be in many areas, especially the west and northern plains. a little cooler in the areas of southeast with that rain. we're going to be about 10 degrees above average palm springs, bakersfield, 94 4 degrees above average, well above average from montana through salt lake city who is going to be near 80 degrees today. one of the cooler spots in the country will be down in the southeast, temperatures 10 degrees below average because of the rain and the clouds that surround it. actually a split in new england. the cold waters of new england are keeping coastal areas chilly while we're a little warmer inland. new york city included. there's some good out there. there's some people saying how about me. >> how about me. hey, a good hump day. we like that.

we've seen a lot of images and video out of baltimore following intense rioting within the city. perhaps one video is getting the most attention. it was this mother laying down the law as nbc's rehema ellis explains, there's been strong reaction to her dose of discipline. >> reporter: police say this is one mother's fury unleashed on her son. spotted in the middle of a protest, she forces him back, tries to rip off his mask, while screaming at him. >> get over here now! >> reporter: baltimore's police chief commended her. >> if you saw on one scene, you have one mother who grabbed her child who had a hood on his head and started smacking him on the head because she was so embarrassed. i wish i had more parents that took charge of their kids out there tonight. >> reporter: the video has gone viral. on the streets of baltimore today, many are calling her a hero.
