coming up on early today, a curfew brings calm to the city of baltimore for a second night while protests spread to other cities. meanwhile a new report raises questions about how freddie gray injured his spine and whether he may have intentionally injured hif. plus a deadly shark attack in hawaii. a woman's revenge after being denied a cigarette and the hand found in a tampa attic. >> good morning, right now it's an uneasy peace in baltimore. the overnight curfew was lifting this morning following peaceful protests across the city. demonstrators cleared the street. congressman elijah comings

walked around telling people let's go home. thousands of people in washington d.c. boston minneapolis and denver joined in but yesterday's major hot spot new york city. police say more than 100 people were arrested. several smaller clashes between demonstrators and police broke out along the march route. more protests are expected today as the people of baltimore demand answers. nbc's jay gray reports from baltimore. >> for the second straight night a curfew in baltimore was met with a bit of resistance but no serious violence. after a day when anger, frustration, and raw emotion again spilled into the streets here. >> there is no this could be. this is you. we cannot be as silent as the

police that murdered him. >> ten days after freddie gray's death hundreds still want to know how and why it happened after he was severely injured in police custody. >> we know there are a lot of people that want answers and have concerned they want to have addressed. >> but police made it clear those answers won't come on friday when they turnover initial results of an investigation into gray's death into the state's attorney's office. >> we can't release all the information of this investigation into the public because if there is a decision to charge in any event by the state's attorney's office the integrity of that investigation has to be protected. >> 101 people arrested during riots and protests were released without being charged. police say they were unable to complete the necessary paperwork to keep them behind bars. >> we have come up on a time line. we still releasing them with future prosecution in mind. >> but the future will have to wait. as this community deals with the harsh reality of what is

happening right now. a reality that at least through this week will include stepped up law enforcement and curfews each night. in baltimore, i'm jay gray. now back to you. >> while protestors await answers from police a potential bombshell from the washington post. the paper's headline reads prisoner in van said freddie gray was trying to injury himself document says. that report which claims to detail police documents has not been confirmed by nbc news but the man on the other side of the metal partition in the back of the police van could not see gray but he heard bankging on the walls but there's doubts about that. jane miller spoke to msnbc's chris hayes last night. >> according to our sources by the time that prisoner is loaded into that van freddie gray was unresponsive. secondly we reported there is no

medical evidence that freddie gray suffered any injury that would indicate that he injured himself by banging his head against the van wall door whatever you want to say. >> the police commissioner said a few days ago the second commissioner reported his ride was calm and quite. it was an eerie sight and the first in the history of major league baseball. the orioles took on the white sox in an empty camden yards. fans were banned for safety reasons. the one bright spot the os topped the sox 8-2. >> we made quite a statement as a city. some good. some bad but now let's go on with taking the statements we made and creating it a positive. >> the game did have some light moments like this os catcher, caleb joseph signing imaginary autographs. he even waved to empty stands. the 46,000 empty seats broke baseball's lowest attendance record set in 1882.

senator bernie saunders is running for the white house. he confirmed his plan during an interview with the associated press. he is entering the race as a democrat. he's the only one to challenge hillary clinton for the democratic party's nomination. tracie potts is live in washington this morning. good morning, what kind of shot does sanders have at this nomination? >> his first big challenge may be catching up to hillary clinton when it comes to her multimillion dollar fund-raising. if he can get 3 million people to have give 100 dollars he may have a shot at this. he's going to make haze announcement on paper. you can't do political events at the capital and that's where he is. he is going to answer about his agenda for america. sort of nonpolitical since he is already in office. that's going to be at noon and he'll file his official paper work later today we're told with the fec. so a little bit about bernie sanders. he is a vermont independent.

a democratic socialist well-known for his fiery speeches here including that 2010 filabuster of the bush tax cuts. he didn't win that one but he did crash the senate's video server with people logging in to see that. in fact he was trending on twitter. so he is well-known for speaking out on social issues and he may be holding hillary clinton's feet to the fire when it comes to things like income inequality. >> that's interesting and i love the fact that he's on twitter so apparently he's up to date on his social media. thank you very much tracie potts in d.c. now to a deadly shark attack in hawaii. a shark killed a 65-year-old woman off the coast of maui. snorkelers found her body floating in the ocean yesterday morning. she had been snorkeling with two friends before they became separated. authorities cleared nearby beaches. there's been numerous shark attacks in hawaii the last several years but only four fatal since 1995.

>> also a bubbling lava lake. it's been spilling into a crater. the spectacular sight is drawing lots of tourists. gut wrenching testimony in the movie theater massacre trial. james holmes accused of going on the unthinkable killing spree has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. yesterday we heard about the youngest victim. jacob was in the courtroom. >> veronica will always be six years old. recently graduated from kindergarten. one of many children inside theater nine that night. >> my cousin. >> veronica's teenage cousin called 911. >> can you hear me? >> help help. >> veronica had been shot. her mother ashley was also injured. >> i had my hand on her stomach to see if she was breathing and she was so i kept telling ashley veronica was okay. >> panicked movie goers sprinted

gas pump on fire. the whole incident was captured by security camera. the woman is seen walking up to a man pumping gas and then walking away. she returns, pulls a flighter from her pocket and ignites the gas pump. the woman asked the man for a cigarette and he refused. gas station workers put the fire out and no one was injured. bill karins is here with your thursday forecast. >> temper temper. remind me not to cross her. buy her a whole carton. >> no smoking. that's the key. >> that too. good morning everyone. quite forecast across the country. no severe weather or anything like that to talk about. the lack of weather in the west is all the attention. now that we're ending our so-called water season our rain chances fall off the cliff as we go throughout our summer season. there's not a lot out there today. just showers in the east here. also looking at showers there. how are we doing year to date rainfall? these are the deficits

throughout the region. san diego five inch deficit. los angeles at 6 inches. santa barbara 8. that's bad enough. it's worse when you go up into central california. san francisco is off to a driest start to any year ever. their deficit is nine inches. santa rosa 1 inches. that's the highest, reading at 12 inch deficit. reno of an inch or two. you get the picture out there. how dyer the situation is. as we go throughout the next three or four months there's very little chance of any rain stores. it would be very unusual to have a significant rain over the way up to reading today. temperatures on the coast will be cooler but pleasant. even 78 and sunny in san francisco is a little above average too. >> it seems hot.

police officers in baltimore are under the microscope this week but they're not alone. a series of violent encounters sparked anger and tension from coast-to-coast. nbc's kate snow held a round table discussion with several officers and sergeants from across the country last night. they talked about what it's like to put on the badge and patrol each day in a climate of mistrust. >> if you had used one word right now to describe the relationship between the public and the police force? >> i would say skeptical. >> i would say strained. >> miss understood. >> people are look at us a lot closer today than they were before. >> you all see what happens when these incidents get put on television. does it make you reluctant to
