meteorologist. >> you've got temperatures by the afternoon. mid to upper 80s by the south bay. tri-valley near 90 degrees in livermore. san jose in the 80s. san francisco, mid 70s. but we should begin to see a sea breeze cooling us off late today. a full look in the forecast. for your first check of your friday commute, here's mike. >> looking at the golden gate bridge. there's haze but visibility, lights across the span. i've been watching using anything i can tell, issues on the bridge itself because earlier this morning about half an hour ago there were reports of a crash. we'll get to the map and show you. southbound approaching the toll plaza at least from the report. not a lot of detail. i don't see any slowing. i'll track that for another view. so far, easy drive there as well as around the rest of the bay. anywhere north of the south bay. pretty good commute. looking over toward the san mateo bridge. quick shot of the flashing lights across that foster city site. eastbound has your typical overnight road crews. we'll talk more about that

coming up. 4:31. just into our newsroom. neighbors rush to the rescue when a home catches fire overnight in san jose. happened just before 1:00 near highway 101. a neighbor said before fire crews arrived her brother broke down the door to the burning home to make sure everyone was out inside. fortunately the people who live there were woken up by a smoke detector and no one was hurt. 4:32. mayday protesters are planning to demonstrate in baltimore today as prosecutors are reviewing the police report on the death of freddie gray. over night things were calm in baltimore. 10:00 p.m. curfew will likely stay in place until sunday. so far details of that police report are not being made public. police sources though tell a tv station in baltimore that freddie gray suffered a broken neck from the impact of his head slamming into the back of a police transport van. reportedly there's no evidence that his injuries were caused during the arrest. 4:32.

new this morning, the federal government is launching a nationwide pilot program to give police officers more body cameras. the $20 million program includes funding to purchase the cam as and technical help and also to develop tools to study best practices. attorney general loretta lynch says it will increase transparency and accountability for law enforcement officers. dialogue continues on the national level. san francisco is making its own invest chlt in body cameras. mayor ed lee and chief of police unveiled the plan to spend more than $6 million to put a camera on every officer. but the spending plans complaints from san francisco's sheriff he says he's been pushing for body cameras for two years now as has not received a dime from the city to pay for it. now he's asking for equal treatment if mayor's office is considering the sheriff's request. what if you have your own camera? there's a new app to document police misconduct. you see something bad happen, you record it.

the app makes sure the video you take gets right to the aclu lawyers no matter what happens to your phone. the app is called mobile justice california. it just launched yesterday and more than 2,000 people have downloaded it p. cellphone videos across the country have played a very important role in cases voling police misconduct. >> we know that recording the encounters alone won't change everything but we need increased visibility, we need more people to be recording these encounters. >> the app is freend available for android and apple devices. the death toll in nepal sitting at 6200. following saturday's powerful ate quake. as nepal buries the dead, the survivors are simply trying to get back to their loved ones and back to normal lives. most of those sleeping outside their homes for fear of aftershocks or home collapse are now back indoors. meantime, banks will open today for the first time since the earthquake. the prime minister of japan

is waking up in san francisco this morning. shinzo abe met with leaders and last night attended a reception with governor brown. angry protesters treated mr. abe at the hotel. he said the prime minister should apologize for crimes committed by japan in world war ii including the sexual enslavement of tens of thousands of asian women by the japanese army. >> he's a human being, abe. why can't he accept responsibility, apologize. >> i think the japanese government is negligent in not apologizing. i think the japanese nation suffers for their lack of apology. >> governor brown talked with the prime minister about high speed rails. >> maybe they can talk to them about how they can fund our high speed rail since that is an issue. >> friendly donation? let's talk to our friendly meteorologist rob mayeda as we head to the weekend. >> 63 degrees warm right now in

san jose. 59, san francisco. not much of a breeze right now but this will be the big part of story later on today as the winds will turn more strongly onshore later on this afternoon pulling up low clouds from south to north from monterrey and eventually getting closer to san francisco with the sea breeze begins to come back. right now mostly clear skies. notice the low clouds though coming up the coastline that will lead to the cooling. for the coast today but inland spots, temperatures will climb quickly again. notice the numbers, 50s and 60s at 7:00. a closing in on 90 degrees out there by livermore, san jose, 80s. san francisco about 72 degrees as we begin to see temperatures cooling into the evening if that late day sea breeze. look at morgan hill, another hot day today. briefly in the 70s for san francisco. around 3:00, the sea breeze will cool off. livermore today climbing up close to 90. as we get into the weekend the temperatures will drop into the

more comfortable 70s as we get into saturday and sunday. now for another check of your commute, here's mike. >> i like both weekend and comfortable 70s. over here, overnight road crews. last report we'll look at this shot and see eastbound heading up the high rise from foster city. those flashing lights blocking off two lanes as is the tradition overnight there. no surprise with them as we look over to the hayward side, headlights are eastbound from time to time had what appears to be at least a break in the traffic. they may be moving crews already coming off of that high rise. no big drama as we look at the speed sensors. 84, the dumbarton bridge just below. either side of the bay, we are seeing a little tiny build for the altamont pass but nothing to show sensors for 580. 205 back coming before the merge that you see slowing. as we zoom out, antioch, no delays there. the crash still monitoring activity on the golden gate bridge but so far all things look clear. easy drive, guys.

look at that light volume of traffic. it's only 4:37. >> friday. >> two hours, mike. >> excited about friday. this is a cool story. happening today, a wild homecoming for an injured eagle. this golden eagle was found in san ramon in march. she had a head injury and very disoriented and crash into people and tried to fly. vets say she also nearly blind in her left eye. now she's fully healed. the bird will be released at regional park today. some of the firefighters who helped rescue her will be in to help see her off. but what an amazing recovery. >> yeah, to restore vision above all else. >> i need to go there. >> yes. maybe we could also take flight and join in those journeys. >> good for her. going to be free again. 4:38. coming up next, new research suggesting that cutting down your risk of a well-known disease could be as easy as drinking an extra glass of water every day. and how one tsa agent took a

rps. a very good friday morning. it's the first day of may. may day as we look outside sneer north bay. mike has the morning commute coming up. new this morning, the u.s. navy beefing up presence in the persian gulf to better protect u.s. cargo ships. the navy says ships will accompany u.s. commercial strips through the strait of hormuz in the wake of harassment from iranian patrol boats. there are four naval ships in the region.

that will respond to any distress calls. so a plea may be coming as soon as today in the new jersey lane closure. you remember that scandal, the one that rocked governor chris christie's entire administration. it sparked claims there were essentially political retaliation. nbc news learned a key fig sure ready to plea guilty. some reports suggest it's a christie childhood friend who christie appointed as port authority director. ride the rails? new measures to improve train safety nationwide. it applies to tanker cars carrying crude oil and other flammable liquids. they've been among those calling for change where tanker cars run through the east bay. the changes being unveiled today could include a new generation of safer railcars and plans to retrofit some of the older cars. he is for all intents and purposes the rock star of technology. tesla ceo elon musk and now showing off his next big thing.

changing hands. >> for that and the rest of your news before the bell we turn to kate rogers who is not in las vegas for the fight but instead live at cnbc's world headquarters. good morning, kate. >> unfortunately not but just as exciting here. u.s. stocks ended the month of april on a negative note. dow dropped 200 points to end the month with just a 0.18% for the gain but flat for the year. futures are pointing to a higher open to kick off may. as you mentioned a big weekend aed a for u.s. sports with lots of money on the line. saturday is the long awanted may weather/pacciou play. $3 million in pay-per-view sales alone. saturday is the kentucky derby at churchill down which could attract 16 million viewers and $100 million to the host venue from premium ticket sales. don't forget nhl and nba playoffs this weekend and red sox/yankees series which draws

huge viewers and marketing opportunities. the sequel to the 2012 blockbuster has taken in more than $200 million in international markets and could max that number in north america this weekend. back over to you guys. >> how will we find time to watch all of those things? i don't know. we're going to have to add a couple hours to the day. thank you. >> i know. >> let's take monday off. 4:46. public health officials are reporting four cases of an illness we don't often hear about. the plague. primary pneumonic plague is rare with fewer than 100 cases reported in the u.s. during the past century. small outbreak occurred in colorado last summer starting with a sick pet dog who was eventually euthanized. the dog's owner and two people who worked at the veterinary clinic fell ill. a fourth person may have contracted the illness from the dog or the dog's owner. all four were given the a

possibly have to do that. >> exactly. exactly. 4:47. let's switch gears and talk about the sunshine that's going to hit the bay area later today. warm yesterday. >> it was. it already feels that way today. you step out your door and it's got that balmy, tropical air to it. good morning. >> it does. right now 63 degrees, san jose closing in just before sun rise at the coolest point of the day. doesn't feel all that cool outside. 63 right now. few spots yesterday soaring close to 90. you see oakland right now, 59 degrees. and fog-free right now in san francisco. 59. but this will be the little bellwether or the weather barometer as the winds pick up onshore. the winds relatively calm for now. but later today will be seeing low clouds coming up from south to north along the coastline. just south of monterrey and then by 2:00 should be approaching half-moon bay. then heading toward san francisco and that will be the ocean air conditioning slowly turning on today. cooling areas out near the coast.

but for the valleys it looks like we're going to see one more hot day. speaking of the low clouds you can see the trend here. the stratos surge as we refer to it coming up from south to north cooling off the coast. inland spots, the marine layer still squished down below about 500 feet, it's going to be another hot day inland, 80s, 90s, out toward livermore. for the coast you will see that sea breeze and low clouds start to pick up. we're going to see cooling there. one more hot day inland across the valleys and temperatures will be warming quickly as we go through the day. morning temperatures, almost need a jacket. tri-valley and san jose, 60s to start. by lunchtime looking at numbers already in the 80s out towards the inland east bay valleys and close to san jose. san francisco probably around 1:00 or 2:00 briefly we get close to the mid 70s but for the sea breeze begins to fire up after 3:00 that's going to cool things off. it won't prevent at least one more hot day towards the tri-valley. san jose, 86 degrees. you can see the numbers around foster city, low 80s. 70s closer to san francisco. should see the numbers cooling

off by 5:00. north bay temperatures in the 80s. livermore close to 90 degrees today and beginning tomorrow. this when the big cooldown should arrive where it spills inland. look at the temperature drop in the weekend. no sign of rain. we could have misty skies and low clouds as we get things started for tomorrow morning. highs inland, san jose into the 70s. monday and tuesday, looking dry with those temperatures staying in the low to mid 70s. but we'll keep a long range outlook on the end of next week because the next chance of seeing rain showers possibly by may 7th, computer models indicating we might see the numbers by the end of next week in the 50s and 60s. for now is our next best chance of seeing showers. nothing to worry about for now and this weekend but everyone would appreciate the cooldown coming as the sea breeze returns later on today. back to you. >> thank you very much. happening today from oakland to oregon and now ogden, utah. damian is going to give a commencement speech to wieber state university in utah today.
