bay. very comfortable outside, so get out and enjoy, and we have a cooldown even cooler than today headed our way and maybe some chance of rain later in the week. we begin with some heartbreaking news out of livermore this morning. a woman and a toddler are dead after a drunk driver crashed into an apartment complex. this happened just before 7:00 last night on marietta boulevard right by gra naudnada high school. a 34-year-old livermore man lost control of his car before crashing into the back of an apartment. a mother and her 14-month-old baby girl were killed. two other people were also hurt in the crash, but they are expected to survive. the driver was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. marietta boulevard between east stanley boulevard and holmes street was closed for several hours overnight while officers

investigated. well we have continuing coverage of protests in oakland that became destructive. last night much quieter as store owners spent most of saturday cleaning up following friday's mayday demonstrations. this stems from the freddie gray brutality case where freddie gray died while in custody. as of this morning, no incidents have been reported. windows were boarded up along broadway as businesses began the cleanup process, and along auto road dozens of cars with their windows smashed. businesses with surveillance cameras are being asked to turn over any footage of vandals to help police. soccer teams kicked up their protests this weekend against secondhand smoke coming onto their field from nearby levi stadium. players put on masks to show their opposition to smoke coming from people who attended a concert at levi's. they complained to city

mother's day is one week from today. we wanted to start our celebration early. so all week long we are showing you some tributes to our moms as we share some of the lessons they've taught us over the years. >> oh, this was a treat when i found out we were doing this project. earlier this week i had a chance to do something special for my mom. i couldn't wait for her to have this moment as we put her front and center on broadway. ♪ >> i think my mom has a real gift for connecting with people. and we all can connect with people in different ways. and hers is music. ♪ you just can't go on ♪ >> i grew up listening to my mom sing in church. she's a drama teacher. >> okay you guys what does this say? in a flutter. >> i wanted to do something special. i wanted her to take this stage on broadway because to me this is where she belongs. >> i'm so excited. i hardly have words. and that's very unusual. >> ♪ a great big ♪

>> right now we're walking backstage, stage left. you can see some of our props. there's a quote that says music talent to build the hopes and dreams of others. i think my mom does that. >> this is the dressing room. >> mom has always encouraged me to dream big and she's never said that i can't do something. if you can think it you can dream it. >> sheinelle is a smart, beautiful, wonderful woman. it gives me a humble, proud feeling. >> oh, my gosh. >> i think when she's on that stage, she's able to be larger than life. people love music theater because it speaks to the soul in a way that sometimes words can't. and that, to me, is her gift. ♪ somewhere over the rainbow ♪ ♪ way up high ♪ ♪ there's a land that i heard of once in a lullaby ♪

when it comes to girl scout cookies we all have our favorites, thin mints in the freezer freezer, sack owe was. now imagine your favorites as desserts. that's what the girl scouts asked of their fans and this morning we have three finalists of the first national girl scout cookie contest and we are so excited to do brunch today. let's start with daniel and his daughter ashley a former girl scout herself. you're using the do-si-dos. >> okay. >> we crunch up the peanut butter cookies. we have some melted chocolate, chocolate chips. peanut oil and a little bit of peanut butter. >> okay. >> we mix it all together put it inside of a lined pan, refrigerate it for a couple of hours and that's it. >> super easy. >> and what's the whipped topping here? >> you take the chocolate and combine it into the whipped cream. you do it gradually. you fold it, until it's combined.

>> so actually combine this. >> yes, once it's combined. once you combine it -- >> these are really easy. >> you fold it -- >> two great tastes. >> and then you have to refrigerate it again after that? >> yep. >> a little chocolate and you sample. is that how it works? >> yes. >> i'm going to take a bite while michelleburgate is here with her daughters natalie and jenna. you girls are working with the samoas is that right? what are we making michelle? >> we're making chocolate chili coconut pies. and we start with a premade crust and we use cream cheese crust and we crateeated this for natalie so an 8-year-old can make it and assemble it. her cookie was a samoa. we put it in and ground it up into the chocolate pudding and toasted coconut over the stove and added homemade whipped cream. then we started layering. >> this is great. and super simple. do you guys make this? >> natalie made it. >> okay.

>> and then we put that on top. >> then what is this just tell me. >> that is a pie crust on top. chocolate, whipped cream. >> this sounds fantastic. >> oh, look there's a fork here. i'm going to put my fork in here in just a second. but first olivia and stephanie, i want you to tell me what you're making here. you're joining us from pennsylvania delightful caramel bars. >> you start with the base of crushed cookies, and butter and then you sprinkle on some chocolate chips. crushed up caramel delights. you put on the melted caramel. >> i like that you're using two different kinds of cookies which is kind of fun. >> and dust it with more crushed shortbread. >> this is great. i also hear that your troop is really involved in sending a lot of the cookies to the troops which is great to hear about. >> yes. my girl scout troops sent cases of cookies over to the soldiers.
