"early today" starts right now. good morning, everybody. we want to start with breaking news. eruption of gunfire, then a shootout near dallas.

here is what we know right now. after a showcase of cartoons right after a showcase depicting it as a free speech event by a sponsor, two men drove near the building and opened fire. at this hour that security officer is out of the hospital. he's bruce joiner who works for the school district where the event was held. . >> reporter: this area is still locked down after the intense investigation and police killing two suspects that opened fire on a security guard. lis say the two men showed up just as the event was supposed to end. jumped out of the car and opened fire and shooting unarmed school security guard in the ankle.
