>> live look outside on this monday morning. what a beautiful way to start our day. live look at the bay bridge. it's may 4th. this is "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> a very good monday to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. happy family celebration is how it started. it instantly turned into tragedy over the weekend. the mother and her 14-month-old baby girl killed in a backyard by a suspected drunk diver. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in live more this morning. the family i understand was there for a first communion celebration. >> that's right. good morning to you both, laura and sam. tragic story. the mother and baby here along marietta boulevard by this apartment complex wednesday was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver. you can see orange temporary fencing where a real fence used to be and debris in the back where the car ended up. here the memorial of the flowers and candles and the balloons for

these two people. 35-year-old brian jones of livermore is set to be in court tomorrow. police say he was drunk behind the wheel of his corvette when he hit trees and plowed into this backyard where flying debris injured two children. the coroner has not officially identified the victims but friends and family say one close friend said he heard the impact. >> when i looked out there was the corvette here. like i can still remember the glass was shattered. t hood came off and that is when i looked to my balcony and looked underneath me and that was -- that was when i saw her. i don't know if i can talk about it. >> a livermore police say jones consented to preliminary alcohol screening which resulted in a .13 and .14. jones had been at a wine festival earlier in the day.

friends say the mom and baby daughter were from the monterrey area. friends saying they left behind a husband and father as well as two siblings or two children, 10 years old and 22 years old. live in livermore this morning, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> such heartache this morning. friends will set up ago fund me account to help with all of the funeral costs. you find that link and more information on this story on our website at nbcbayarea. san jose embark on a bold new plan to improve street safety today. it's called zero vision. actually vision zero. its mission is to make the streets safer for everyone. the mercury news reports the city will launch an $80 million effort that includes slowing down speeders, adding more like lanes and improving crosswalks and lighting for pedestrians. the money comes mostly from grants. you hair about it all the time, the dangers of living in the bay area, the jolt in the east bay reminded many people why we hear about those

warnings. a 3.6 magnitude quake striking concord yesterday afternoon followed by a 2.7 quake just about a minute later and then a string of smaller quakes. many stores like this target in pleasant hill are taking safety precautions. they posted a sign warning customers to stay out of areas where ceiling tiles could fall on top of them. people shopping in concord said they felt a little boift shait shaking. no reports of damages or injuries. >> it was a jolt. it wasn't anything too big. nothing fell down. nothing broke. it was just kind of more of a caught you off guard kind of did i just feel what i think i did. >> several people told us they felt it as far south as fremont and even some people on the peninsula as well. could a leak in walnut creek ltz be linked to yesterday's earthquake in the east bay? water spewed into an intersection. it happened shortly after the quake struck.

good morning, christina. >> local law enforcement along with the fbi and the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearm, they know who the two suspects were. but they're not revealing who they are to us just yet. let's take you to phoenix. this is a reporter there reporting because there is a under way of an apartment there that belongs to the suspects. they were led to that apartment by the registration of the vehicle that ended up outside that shooting in dallas. take you to garland, texas, right now where you can also see that there is still a heavy police presence and the site of a detonation of the suspect's vehicle there. folks -- the law enforcement there suspected that there could have been explosives there so they did detonate some part of the car. all of this happened, there was a free speech events is how organizers dubbed it yesterday, when as event was wrapping up two gunmen drove up to that event center, jumped out of their car and shot an unarmed

school security guard in the ankle. he's expected to survive. but about 200 people were locked down inside that building, then moved to an undisclosed location. people heard that gunfire nearby business i as well and they were also evacuated. >> kind of weird because we heard pop, pop, pop, quick. pause, and then another pop, pop, pop real quick. is a i said, that is gunshot. >> bomb squad technicians swept the car looking for explosives and eventually did detonate something. investigators are trying to connect the dots between what the suspects did and why they did it. organizers, they could not have expected this but they did expect something because they spent 10,000 extra dollars on security. they brought in 40 extra security officers for that show that included a $10,000 contest for the best depiction of the prophet mohammed in a cartoon. but the latest development is that search of the suspect's apartment or the apartment connected to the suspect. that's happening in phoenix.

trip down south. water will take you to paradise. we have a taste of it ourselves here in the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> for you two i've got two tickets to paradise, guess what, we're already there. temperatures are looking good this morning. it's going to be stellar out there later on. although the same area of low pressure that's roughing up the seas down south is going to bring us some changes later this week. 55 degrees in san jose. we're starting out at 52 in san martin. temperatures are going to be lovely today. the only problem is we are going to have to deal with those high pollen levels. they will peak as we get into your wednesday. so we have so much pollen out there. we had enough wind over the past couple of days. you can actually visibly see the pollen drifting around. probably accumulating on your windshield. keep that in mind. keep the allergy medicine handy for you and the little ones if they suffer as well. the good news is we've got showers on the way in just a few days. let me take you through your forecast for this monday.

cloudy start to a sunny and pleasant afternoon. temperatures are going to be just perfect. actually right on track with our seasonal averages which we haven't experienced over the past couple of weeks. 5 degrees on the east shore today at noon. 62 on the peninsula. basically all across the board today you want to keep light sweater or jacket with you until lunchtime. then you can throw it in the corner as we head throughout 4:00 p.m. with temperatures in the 70s. 73 degrees in the tri-valley. 70 degrees in the north bay for today and 70 degrees in the south bay. so just days away from wide spread rainfall here in the bay area. i'm doing to time that system out to your doorstep. counting the showers by thursday. now, it's early out there. i know you clever bay area folks like to get out there early to avoid the traffic. let's check on that with mike. >> everybody is trying to beat the pattern and create a new pattern. over here, the bay bridge toll plaza. beating the backup and beating the sun rise. easy flow president let me show you the view from our emeryville shot looking at san francisco. you can see on the span itself,

easy. light flow. the city can't make out the buildings but visibility for drivers just fine. we just can't see that nice city scape. the map, speed sensors, throughout the north bay. easy flow of traffic for 101 down through novato. did talk about one incident. this is in the north bay. westbound 80 around highway 12, reports of a pickup on the right shoulder and fencing. i don't know if that fencing fell off of the truck or if it was hit in the center divide and pulled out. so we're going to get more detail. sounds like one lane is blocked. tiny bit on the immediate approach. light volume all around the bay. as we look around the bay we're seeing just a typical slowing for westbound 4 in antioch and coming out of the altamont pass. dublin, livermore. no delays. 580 you have a little build and the south bay we have a couple of spots for overnight road crews. crash reported north 880 past the boulevard. i'll check on that. so far no lanes reported

goldberg was just 47 years old. >> so young there. the race to the white house, well, it's about to get a bit more crowded this week with a familiar face from silicon valley declaring her candidacy. former hewlett-packard ceo karly fir written that announced she's going to run this morning. she did it via twitter. bernie sanders is hillary clinton's first democratic challenger. sanders called her, quote, the establishment constituent. yes, she is. and out of touch, sanders says, which could have an impact on her campaign strategy. >> early on he can be part of the reason that former secretary clinton moves slightly to the left. >> wish she could take some of the flowers and give life to the candidacy there. other republicans to announce their candidacy this week, former arkansas governor mike huckabee and dr. ben carson.

business. markets look to start the week out on a positive note. stocks rebounded friday but still closed down for the week. busy week for economic data topped by the monthly jobs report on friday. today we get news on factory orders and comcast, the parent of nbc universauniversal, repor earnings. on friday, dow raising 183 points to 18024. nasdaq up 54. scotting back to you. >> ceo of mcdonald's is in the middle of a huge presentation to investors and reporters showing how he's going to radically change the fast food chain. the company suffered slow sales lately. the new ceo has been on the job a few months and closed a number of stores and more big changes are on the way. another big week for silicon valley superstar elon musk. both companies report profits this week. solar city and tesla. solar city looking for big bucks. tesla, we're looking for another update on how many cars the company is making. and sam and laura, any sort of

5:25. the east coast college making a statement about gender. massachusetts's all female edge which smith college will be opening its doors to transgender students starting this fall. people who were born as men but identify themselves as women can apply to smith college. school officials say this move is to respect and afford equal opportunity to all women. however, the school will not be accepting women who identify themselves as men. smith college alumni include barbara bush, julia child, and sylvia plat. food for thought or just mere coincidence? researchers at joness hopkins found some children with adhd may be more prone to binge eating disorder. athey've looked at 79 children. they found those with adhd were 12 times more likely to have that eating disorder can can lead to weight gain. the study found the most

>> a good morning. thank you for joining us on this monday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. a suspected drunk driver is expected to -- suspected, i should say, expected to appear in court tomorrow. he crashed his car into a livermore backyard killing a mother and her 14-month-old daughter. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in livermore where a memorial is growing for those victims. stephanie, what is so amazing about this, they weren't even on the road. this was a mother and child in a backyard celebrating. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. if you can imagine here along stanley, there was a celebration going on in the backyard behind me for a communion and birthday party. this is where they were when they were hit. this is 7:00 saturday night. you can see the aftermath still where the driver ran into trees and plowed into the brach yard. flying debris injured a 6 and 7-year-old boy as well. memorial, balloon, stuffed animals, more than two dozen lit candles. it continues to get bigger.

35-year-old brian jones of livermore is out on bail after livermore police arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence in his 2014 corvette. the coroner has not officially identified the victims but family friends say they are morales and 14-month-old daughter julie. >> imagine, to see what's going on. to see what's going on. that try to help them. >> just breaks my heart that this family were just enjoying their backyard. >> livermore police say a preliminary alcohol screening shows jones with a .13 blood alcohol level. jones had attended the livermore wine country festival that day. it stopped serving alcohol at 5:00. the crash happened around 7:00. it's unclear where he was in between. meantime, friends say the mom and baby are from the monterrey area and they're hoping to raise money to send them back to mexico for funeral arrangements. live in livermore, stephanie

chuang, "today in the bay." >> very sad. thank you, steph. friends set up a go fund me account to help with funeral costs. you can find that link and more information on the story on our, site nbcbayarea. we move to a developing story and a search for a motive right now in the shooting outside an event in texas and an event that included a challenge for cartoonists to draw the prophet mohammed. >> kris sanchez ? >> the fbi apparently knows who the two gunmen are and where they lived. a phoenix tv station is identifying one of the gunmen and they're reporting that he was the subject of a previous terror investigation. his identity and the vehicle registration led investigators to this phoenix apartment. the address is the one listed on the registration of that car that the gunman allegedly drove up to that event center about 1,000 miles away. the other suspect is said to be his roommate. that car is still on the scene

will hold a news conference asking for the public's 45e89. cats go into heat and get pregnant as the weather gets warmer. the problem is with the drought the weather actually has been warm for some time. that means more kittens. the shelter has already seen 40% increase in kittens coming in to the shelter. they hope to be able to find people who will at least foster the kittens. >> definition of being in heat. i have a feeling, by the way, that those cats, if you could adopt all of them, christina, you probably would. i don't think you have enough space for it, though. >> cat lady. >> no, i've got three dogs already. there was a time in my loof i thought i would be a cat lady. temperatures this morning are nice and comfortable. recently married in case you didn't know. as we head throughout the afternoon temperatures are going to be lovely. there is hope for all of us. and a beautiful day ahead is going to inspire you just to get back to work on a monday. 55 degrees in san jose. that fog is going to continue to move into san francisco. for us for the most part it's low clouds.

right at the immediate coast is where you are going to see that dense fog touching the surface, actually creating a little bit of a hazard for drivers to morning across the golden gate bridge. good news is all that low cloud cover will clear by 11:00 a.m. leaving was a spectacular sunny day and temperatures that are hard to beat right on track with our seasonal averages. 70 degrees in the south bay for today. 73 degrees on the east shore. 61 in san francisco. 70 degrees in the north bay. so we just soften that live picture with my people tapping the brakes even though it's early. good morning. >> we're going to show you the maze. this is the approach. this is the biggest impact for your bay's commute. this is west 80. east shore freeway. folks making the way here moving smoothly. i will show you that in a second. these flashing lights trans sissing out of berkeley and emeryville down towards southbound 880 continuing on toward oakland. that's where we have a crash blocking out. one lane folks are squeezing by.

the map will show you the bay bridge toll plaza as well. turn around the berkeley curve. 880 or the toll plaza. metering lights likely turned on a couple seconds ago. we'll show you the map and show you the entire area starting to show the congestion. folks coming over into the tunnel, that drive is clear. the toll plaza you saw has that backup so that will be a factor and likely build out of the maze. the crash is southbound 880 off of the east shore freeway. over here the tri-valley shows a typical build for your monday. compressing toward the dublin interchange. no drama for the tri-valley or for the east bay. everywhere, the south bay sews a blip from 101 not unusual but the peninsula is looking clear. back to you. it's 5:39. the curfew has been lifted but a state of emergency is still in effect in baltimore. a live report from maryland after the break. a live look outside this morning.

a very good monday morning to you. what a lovely look outside this morning at the bay bridge. christina is back with a look at our forecast coming up. new this morning, intense flames gutted a church and apartment building in new jersey. the two-story church partially collapsed. the fire spread to a three-story apartment building and two other buildings as well. about 80 people were displaced. luckily no one was hurt. investigators now looking into the cause. new this morning, the curfew no longer in effect in baltimore. life slowly returning to normal there. now leaders are trying to figure out to prevent any future violence. >> we have the latest from washington. good morning, edward. >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura.

and the mayor of baltimore says the curfew is no longer needed after five nights that it was in effect. right now police that have come in from other agencies to help have now been scaled back. the human process took a giant step forward in baltimore, then the mayor lifted the curfew. maryland's governor says national guard troops will start living in the next few days. >> we had to build an entire city to save the city. so it's going to take a while you be we've already start sdpled with we want to heal our city. we know we have challenges in baltimore. we know that there's work to be done. >> reporter: that work will start with a focus on the baltimore police. the mayor says there will be police reforms to prevent more deaths like freddie gray's. six officers face very serious charges in gray's death. maryland representative elijah cummings says the wheels of justice are turning for gray but not systemic issues must be addressed. >> you cannot address our

economy without addressing the disparity among the races. you just can't. ethnic disparities. so we want to look at that. >> reporter: he wants to bring a by part san delegation from congress to tour baltimore to help make change. about 500 people were arrested during the unrest. most of them have actually been released because of system overlo overload. they were not charged within the 48 hours as required by law. reporting live in washington, edward lawrence. back to you. >> thank you. the state of utah has seen its homeless population shrink to nearly nothing. what's the key to their success? they say the answer is kind of simple. provide homes for the homeless. in 2005 utah counted close to 2,000 homeless people. last month that number went down to 178. utah's homeless task force has been trying to place homeless people into housing first as the foundation for turning their lives around. leaders say the cost of housing is far lower than what it costs to provide resources for the

as you break for lunch monday, 52 degrees. 58 on the east shore. rounding out the day at about 70. generally speaking, temperatures in the mid 60s to low 70s across the board for today. with good to moderate air quality. in fact, as we head throughout the rest of the week because of that onshore flow and area of high pressure headed our way we will see good air quality. we need that this time of year. let's take you that that future cast sam was talking about. i stopped my clock for you at 5:00 p.m. you will notice showers moving into the greater bay area. not going to see heavy precipitation but light activity across the board. maybe measuring up to a tenth of an inch as we get into this afternoon. excuse me, as we get into thursday and friday. for this this afternoon, temperatures will be nice. 70 on monday. 61 degrees for your monday in san francisco. really lovely. tuesday into wednesday. then by thursday that change comes in. we bring in the rain but

weapon this news coming out just last night. first reported by comcast sports bay area that later today at 1:00 the nba expected to announce that warrior superstar steph curry has earned the mvp award, the most valuable player award for this year in the league. this is jed's game against the grizzlies. not a huge surprise that curry would be receiving the top honor from the league given his tremendous performance during the regular season. look at his three pointers. 273 for the regular season. a personal best for curry. according to the bay area news group his parents informed their sost lan night over dinner that he had received this award. making curry the first warrior to receive the award since wilt chamberlain back in 160. >> steph is the guy who really was the maestro of the warriors with the best offense. they had a historically good season. one of only ten teams to win 67 games in a season. i think when you look at steph's numbers individually they were
