fire officials say this is about the size of central park. evacuations have been ordered for nearby residents. so far no word on any injuries. that's a little good news there. meteorologist bill karins is here with a look at the forecast. it has not rained much in the northeast and spring is dry and brutal conditions. the only hazards that we have on the west coast continue to be the long period and still we have some rip current threats from the beaches to san diego and up past malibu. they should be with us a day or two or improving. the story over night was the heavy rains and we had the flooding rain and four inches of rain and texas had three inches of rain. these are the highest rain totals that you can find. a steady rain there and that's the the grass loves.

. welcome back everybody. jurors in the penalty phase of the boston marathon bombing trial saw something they haven't seen in the trial since it began, a show of emotion from dzhokhar tsarnaev as his relatives from russia took the stand. nbc justice correspondent pete williams was in the courtroom. >> reporter: after dzhokhar tsarnaev sat stone-faced while dozens of witnesses told of the pain and suffering he caused, he showed emotion for the first time, wiping away tears as relatives from russia recalled his childhood. his 66-year-old aunt waved to him during a courtroom break, overcome at seeing him, unable to testify. she was one of five relatives from the dagestan region of russia brought here to talk about his past. all were issued electronic ankle monitors, housed in a secret location and escorted by the fbi. cousins told the jury he was especially close to his older brother tamerlan growing up.

they said when tamerlan visited them a year before the bombing, he embraced radical islam. defense lawyers played a recording of his voice talking about jihad found on a dzhokhar's laptop computer. according to a defense translation, he said "maybe you're able to hold it down, but i haven't been able to. i have this rage of hate red inside me." >> that was nbc's pete williams reporting. he also reports the case will probably go to the jury by the middle of next week. an nypd officer shot in the head over the weekend has died. 25-year-old brian mooar sustained severe brain injuries. his alleged shooter will now be charged with first degree murder we're learning how david goldberg died. he's the ceo of survey monkey and husband of facebook coo sheryl sandberg. officials say the 47-year-old collapsed on a treadmill, fell off and cracked his scull on friday. goldberg and his family were vacationing in mexico.
