right now, chilling video of a 13-year-old girl fighting off an attacker inside her own home. peninsula neighborhood on edge this morning after a startling paint ball attack. plus, caught on camera. a smash and grab robber hits a san francisco boutique and police say it's not the only one doing it. a quick live look outside right now. the bay bridge. it is thursday, may 7th. you are watching "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> a very good morning to you. it's 4:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we have a lot to get to. first, let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> it's actually a new forecast. big changes. 50 degrees in san carlos.

50 in san jose. we've gone ahead and activated the doppler this morning. expecting some showers. very cold system coming through. we'll talk more about that in just moments. also, expecting a little thunderstorm activity as we head throughout your day. check your drive. welcome in mike inouye. we made it to thursday. >> we did so far. these folks made it to the bay bridge toll plaza. wait for the cash lanes president both sides, not everybody there reported yet for the cash lane. we will watch this. should clear up over the next 20 minutes. wait there is only five but that's a big difference if you're expecting a clear drive into san francisco. the maze, no problem on the san francisco side. nice drive. no delays across the north bay across the george bush bridge across your screen. antioch shows little signs of the first start of the slowdown. that's typical about this time on a thursday for highway 4. we'll track that. nothing unusual there for the south. over night road crews southbound 85 to southbound 280, i believe, is the part of the connector

that's closed right now for the next half hour, i think. back to you. >> thank you, mike. developing new, a sexual predator is on the loose this morning in the south bay. a man so aggressive he follows a 13-year-old girl home from school, forcing his way into her home. the girl fought back but he got away. >> all of this caught on camera, no less. nbc bay area's kris sanchez is live at police headquarters with a look at the suspect and how you can help. >> reporter: this is one brave 13-year-old little girl. not only did she find the strength to fight off that attacker she is also speaking out about what happened in hopes that anyone around the bay area can help get him into custody. the man accosted that little girl as she walked home on tuesday, forced his way into the family home. what he didn't know is the family's surveil lns cameras were rolling and that girl was up for a fight. family's home is on rio vista avenue in san jose. san jose police say the same suspect then followed a young

woman into a bathroom at the market on saratoga avenue a monday before and tried to sexually assault there. this is a case perfect for social media. they have pictures and plea from the 13-year-old victim. though she wants to tell her story we are protecting her identity. we'll have that for you in the next half hour. san jose police say that between their work and social media, they should be able to track that suspect down within 48 hours. it's a challenge for the department. he is described as 30 years old, medium build, thin with a -- thin with a beard. and what would be a good thing is that because of his alleged attacks have been on camera, that there are pictures of those suspects that can be disseminated on social media. after forcing his way into that 13-year-old's home she told us that she believed he was trying to record the whole thing on his cellphone. so san jose police say this is an urgent matter because this

person has the confidence to strike twice and he will likely do it again. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, kris. this morning san jose state students have the all clear to return to class after some tense moments on campus last night. just before 7:00 someone said they spotted a man with a gun near dounken hall. no gunman was found. it is painful and petty. a paint ball prank has the attention of palo alto police this morning. officers say someone inside a moving car is shooting paint balls at random people walking down the streets. tuesday night an elderly man was hit at dana avenue and two women were hit near melville and parkinson avenues. the victims have bruises but are okay. a smash and grab in a san francisco jewelry store. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live. the westportal neighborhood is seeing an uptick in burglaries

lately. >> reporter: good morning. that's according to san francisco police. now a camera inside this boutique store called art of style in the 200 block of westportal caught this man trying to break in here with a rock. the door has been fixed but we have brand new security camera footage just released by police. you can see in the footage the man has a black hat, red shirt. walks by. he glances around and goes up to the door. he peers inside the store. that's when you can see he's wearing gloves. he walks out. looks around the street before chucking a rock at the door. it doesn't break anything so he picks up the rock again. looks around again before throwing it. it appears he just starts to kick the door in. it's three times until it finally gives way and he ducks under with a duffel bag. he is seen in the video also messing with hanging jewelry in the back. not 40 seconds into the store he leaves with an arm full of clothes and grabs a tray of ringsz before making his exit. it is, again, all caught on camera as you're looking at it.

look again at this man. these are pictures, still pictures from the surveillance footage. this was 3:30 in the morning on april 21st. it was dark. the man making off with $3,000 worth of stolen goods as well as cash. so police hoping that that might jog someone's memory if anyone was in the area at the time. again, this is the 200 block of westportal avenue. he was in and out of here in just 40 seconds. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> long enough to get his picture. 4:36. the city of alameda will pay nearly half a million to a man who accused police of excessive force. attorneys accuse an alameda police sergeant of repeatedly using a baton to strike a mentally and physically disabled theft suspect. that suspect says he had to be hospitalized after the 2012 incident. police insist the sergeant acted lawfully. according to the chronicle without admitting liability alameda city council members

this week approved a $450,000 payout. >> a lot of money. we now know what killed a humpback whale that washed ashore in pacifica this week. it was struck by a ship. scientists say the whale had four broken vertebrae and hemorrhaging around one broken rib. biologists from the marine mammal center and california academy of scientists cut into the 42-foot whale yesterday. another whale washed ashore in pacifica last month. the cause of death for that sperm whale has not yet been determined. change in that forecast. christina has a look at our temperatures right now. >> isolated thunderstorms, i believe, christina. good morning. >> good morning to you. tracking the doppler as we speak. we have showers rolling through napa this morning. and as we head throughout the day today we're actually expecting a little more activity wide spread, light shower activity to finish off the day. very rare risk for some thunderstorm activity as well. as we get into your afternoon. we are counting on that for today. looking good though to see highs ramp up into the 70s.

a nice day coming your way. we do see any thunderstorms it will be over the higher elevations. after about 5:00 tonight. we're starting out in the 50s. we are on our way to the 60s and 70s for most of us. here's the thing. the storm system that's coming in packing a lot of cold, very cold, actually winter like characteristics and dry air. it's going to collide with the moisture that we have out there, the dry air mass and the moist air will collide. maybe some thunderstorms by tonight. 5:00 expecting that. temps today are going to be warm. 77 degrees in the north bay. 69 in san francisco. even with that cold air rushing in, looks league hi s like high still going to be in control. right now we want to check your drive with the emmy nominated mike inouye. >> kstz, congratulations to you. to all of us, i guess. looking over here at the bay bridge. congratulations to the cash lane riders as well because there's no wait. either side of fast track.

as we look into the foster city side of the san mateo bridge also we'll note the taillights going past the flashing lights. again, overnight road crews this time on the foster city side as opposed to the flat section like yesterday. westbound moves smoothly with the headlights across the bay. bottom of the screen popped up on the chp report. south 280 around the area. reports of a vehicle that flipped and rolled into a field. that's a direct quote from chp's original report. sounds dramatic. a lot of times that just means the car went off and tilted over on its side in a ditch. meanwhile no, major slowing there or for the tri-valley out of the altamont. slight build here. san rafael, smooth drive. southbound 101, no delays here or for that ferry system coming in from the north bay and into the city. back to you. >> it works. thanks, mike. commuters would gladly pay up this morning if it means they can get back on to b.a.r.t. balt is back on track this after the transit system was hit by

multiple -- >> a cracked section of the track is repaired though saving hundreds of thousands of riders from a second day of frustration. from 9:30 yesterday morning ten inches of the track gave way between san francisco's civic center and the 16th and mission street stations. it certainly caused a domino effect of delays. lasted well through the evening commute. overnight the crews installed a permanent fix. inconvenienced riders shared some of their stories. >>ed a to do a bunch of transitioning with cars and buses and bikes and b.a.r.t. very confusing. >> had to leave work early because i didn't know if the trains were going to be running to castro valley. >> okay. b.a.r.t. says the track are inspected every night and undergo ultrasound testing twice a year. things should be back up to normal this morning. as if that track issue were not enough, this mylo balloon shut done service yesterday. the balloon hit a transformer in

welcome back. 4:44 right now. lots of people starting their engines early this morning on thursday. as you get over the bay bridge. about those deflated and illegal footballs in the afc championship game. it turns out you know what, after all, new england patriot superstar tom brady probably did know about the shenanigans. that's the big take away from a 243-page report issued yesterday by the nfl on the so-called deflategate controversy. a patriots locker room attendant who called himself, quote, the deflator, is named as the point person. text messages that he sent to an equipment assistant suggested

both of them acted on brady's behalf. the report absolved patriot's head coach bill belichick. the league has not announced any disciplinary action yet of yet and the golden boy is not commented. 4:45. double duty. more and more moms are holding down jobs while also being the heads of their households. a new study by careerbuilders.com finds 39% of working moms are the sole financial provider in their homes. that's up from 31% last year. at the same time, 43% of working dads say they're the sole breadwinners. a lot more than last year. safety concerns this morning for a popular company and its laminated flooring. for more on that and rest of the news before the bell, let's turn to landon dowdy. good morning. >> good morning, laura. there could be more red arrows at the opening bell today after stocks fell for a second day on wednesday. investors reacting from comments from janet yell whon says markets may be a built too high

right now. we get update and filings for unemployment and consumer credit. dow falling 86 points. the nasdaq down 19 to 49.19. cnbc learned lumber lick question dade iters will halt sales of all chinese flooring effective immediately. if retailer has been under fire in march when "60 minutes" aired a report saying products contained high levels of formaldehyde. they are facing lawsuits over product safety and potential criminal charges. the company plans to open a chain of smaller, lower priced stores and that younger bargain conscious shoppers. it can be a shot at trader joe's just opened a store near whole foods headquarters in austin, texas. back to you. >> making a run for the money. have a great day. this guy was definitely on the move. developing story, at least 20 twisers across three different states. a dozen people were injured when

those tornadoes touched down in kansas, nebraska, and oklahoma. >> coming down ground right now. folks, get ready for it. i've got trees coming down on me. power flashes. >> look at all that damage in the aftermath. the storm chaser did not have time to turn his car around. he put his car in reverse and he hit the gas until he was out of harm's way. the entire thing played out on live tv in norman, oklahoma. thankfully he was okay. meteorologists in the area estimate he was in an ef-1 tornado. tha that was just one of many caught on camera. >> this is a serious situation. the folks and farms need to get in a shelter immediately. >> yet he pursued. there is a lot of damage to sort through this morning. dozens of homes were damaged. in kansas, parts of a hotel destroyed. a self storage facility nearly flattened. the national weather service declared a flash flood emergency for oklahoma city for the first time ever. that of course an area of high

activity, too. oklahoma's governor is expected to issue a state of emergency later today. >> wow. makes your heart beat seeing them drive towards it. prisons are feeling the affect of our drought. yesterday sacramento county sheriff's department announced it would take steps to reduce water use. department is cutting back on how often patrol cars and other county vehicles are washed and posted signs asking inmates to useless water. as the county works to get low flow equipment for cells and showers. >> it's how we wash the food. it's how we do our laundry. these are all things that we are going through. we are developing ideas to help save water. this is our first step. >> everybody has got got to do their part. they started conserving at the state level five years ago with 120,000 inmates at 44 state prisons. they've reduced water use by 1.5 billion gallons per year. conservation is a huge step but what we really need is rain.

looks like we might might get some. live look outside. san francisco, oakland, and san jose. >> we like to be optimistic in general but we see the green on the radar. always a good thing. we're looking out very much so for thunderstorms today, christina. >> we have that chance over our local mountains. i want to point out that's a fantastic story, especially for us taxpayers, paying for that water. every sing 8 drop counts. whenever you can be conscious of it we want you to conserve. please do so. we do have shower activity. not a lot. what i can show you right now, very light green. rolling through napa county. this is going to be the story of the morning. it will see wide spread activity through this afternoon. the good news is pollen levels will drop off significantly as a result of this system coming through. best bet for rain is going to be later this afternoon. starting at 1:00 p.m. from the south bay through the north bay. not expecting a lot of activity. maybe .05 of an inch. this is a cold storm system so

we could see snowfall at 6500 feet. getting more snow this time of year is very unusual. we do have that chance. let's talk about thunderstorms now. over the sierra nevada expecting the activity through the evening hours. also good chance for a local mountains in the north bay. the south bay as well. even the east bay hills could see that instability as we get into this afternoon. we're going to be watching that for you. mountain thunderstorms, that's the weather story of the day. 64 degrees at noon. these are your noon readings for today. temperaturewise, just lovely out there. 64 degrees on the peninsula. 66 degrees on the east shore. you will notice that humidity surging in as we head throughout the day up to 72 degrees on the peninsula today. 77 degrees up in wine country. so even with that cold system coming through, high pressure is still the dominant feature. that's why our temperatures will be so warm today. mother's day weekend looking fantastic. 72 degrees both saturday and sunday. in the south bay, we're looking at the low 60s. meanwhile, in san francisco, our

pooes bay valley, comfortable. not too hot. we are in may. could be much warmer this time of year. back to you. >> looks good. was it the senior prank or vandalism. 100 students in tennessee are banned from graduation because of what they did to their school. take a look. the students ransacked sequoia high school, urinated on walls, plopping gold fish in the toilets and dumped a dead opossum on the hay strewn floor. teachers were forced to come in early and clean up the damage while the students waited in the gym. >> and they poured marbles and oil and things on the floor and then covered it with hay so it was very dangerous, very slippery. >> school board members released a statement saying all seniors involved in the act will not be allowed to participant in any graduation activities. >> very quickly put a damper on things. >> right. coming up next at 4:51, decade's old bones found on the

up with mike with just moments. 4:54. special recognition as we approach the 70th anniversary of the end of world war ii. a real live rosy the rif ter will be honored this summer. >> what i always said was, she got all the credit but if it wasn't for my work, there would be no rosy the riveter. >> you take it, regina. she is 92 years old. looking great. being recognized as one of the last of the 15,000 women who worked in boeing, seattle, factories. they certainly worked some long hours and tough conditions building bombers. all told, the factory turned out more than 5,000 of the so-called flying fortresses. >> she has to tell. not too many people left to be able to pass those on. mike, how are the roadways looking this very early hour? >> great. i think there's a museum related to rosy the riveter in alameda or the north bay.

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us live from san jose police headquarters with who police are looking for right now, kris, including the chilling video of that attack. >> reporter: we can start with telling you that 13-year-old girl is a very brave girl because not only did she fight off that attacker she is also willing to talk about the story because she wants to do anything she can to make sure this suspect is taken into custody. that man followed her home
