so did the suspect. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in fridays headquarters in san jose. police say this man will strike again. it's matter of time, if he's not arrested soon. good morning. >> good morning. they say that every attack has been bolder. this was the sect. they think that he now has the confidence to try again. that 13-year-old girl very brave, fought him off. and also speaking out to pick sure that she asks the public to share his photos via social media so he can be brought to justice. a remarkable young woman. when that man accosted that 13-year-old girl she walked home from school on tuesday, then forced his way into her home. he probably did not know that the family surveillance cameras were rolling. if family's home is on rio vista avenue in san jose. san jose police also have surveillance pictures of what appears to be the same suspect but this time at the mitsuwa market on saratoga avenue where a woman in her 20s say he followed her in the bathroom and tried to sexual assault here

there. san jose police say this is a case perfect for social media and they have images of the suspect, plus that plea from that 13-year-old victim. though she wants to tell her story with her family's permission, we are po tekting her identity. >> i had to fight this guy. and i'm thinking, help me, help me, help me, please. that was actually the only thing that was going through my mind. >> nothing is go to stop him. he's got the confidence to do it once. he had the confidence to do it again. he's going to strike again. and, again, what we want to do is prevent that third attack. we can simply do that if people mobilize. >> he suggests that people mobilize via social media. he says that between the police work and social media, they could track that suspect down within 48 hours. that would be a good thing because each of his alleged attacks has been bolder. suspect is described about 30 years old, average migheight, t build with a beard.

if you want to forward the suspect's picture you can find it on our website, nbcbayarea.com. police are disseminating the information to schools asking the schools to share the information with parents given the latest victim is a middle schooler. adding to the urgency, something that the 13-year-old girl told us last night. she said that after that suspect forced his way into the house and then forced himself on her, he appeared to be recording the whole thing on his cellphone. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> just frightening. thank you, kris. 6:04. classes are back to normal at san jose state after reports of a gunman on campus. just before 7:00 p.m. someone spotted a man with a gun near dunken hall. police swarmed the campus as administrators sent out a warning text to students. after an exhaustive search no gunman was found and police gave the all clear. in san francisco a brazen burglar caught on camera. police need your help trying to track him down.

>> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joining us live from west portal neighborhood. that area in geneseeing an uptick in burglaries. >> that's right. good morning, sam and laura. police saying not only that, this man is still out and about. this burglary of art of style boutique store was two weeks ago around 3:30 in the morning. one of the most recent examples of this rise in crime. take a look. caught on a store camera. you can see the man wearing a black hat, jacket, and red shirt. talking by. studying the block before he actually takes a look inside the store. you can see he's wearing gloves. he then walks out and look around the street and takes a rock out of his pocket, throws it at the door obviously nervous. he then kicks down the door three times and gives way. he ducks under with a duffel bag. not 40 seconds later, he leaves with an arm full of clothes and grabs a tray full of rings before making his exit. one more time take a good look at the still pictures of this man. police say he made off with

about $3,000 wot of stolen goods. the owner had just installed the cameras in the store in january. both she and police are hoping it will help lead to this man who broke into the store two weeks ago. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> hope it works. thank you very much, stephanie. developing right now, the sun is up in the midwest and we're getting a clearer look at the damage and the destruction. look at that aerial shot. all of that the carnage from what happened after a number of tornadoes actually dozens of them ripped through several states. oklahoma city is one of the hardest hit areas. at least 12 people were injured and 50 homes damaged or destroyed if entire top floor of a hotel was ripped away. new concern this morning as well. the national weather service has declared a flash flood emergency for oklahoma city for the first time ever. oklahoma's governor is expected toer shoe eer shoe eer issue a later on today.

even with this cold dry air mass moving in from the north, we're still going to see high pressure take control of our forecast and for us that will equate to warm weather. 74 degrees out there in the tri-valley today. good morning to you on the peninsula. you'll hit 72 degrees at 4:00. when our highs come in. you will see the low 70s in the south bay as well. mountain thunder. that's the weather story of the day. tomorrow, a few showers will linger. just a couple days away looking spectacular. wish i could say the same about the roadways this morning. let's get right to that, mike inouye. >> looking a the bay shore freeway and palo alto for our first of two issues for highway 101. this is northbound 101 just north of willow road. you see one of the exit there's the next one is past this scene. two left lanes are blocked. fire crews are on the scene. minor injuries reported. major impact for this quarter mile. look at the map. it's just that quarter mile heading up through palo alto and menlo park. 280 is clear. el camino right now, lighter

traffic flow as the commute starts on the peninsula. over on the north of thering looking at southbound 101 in san francisco. also, two crashes in the same area, south 101 at cesar chavez. one lane blocked for quite some time. judging by the speed sensors everything is improving. may have just cleared the last of the incidents from the side of the road slow. from the skyway off the bay bridge to cesar chavez clearing by the time 101 and 280 crossover there. meanwhile, look at the rest of your bay and no unusual pattern for the east bay or north bay. there on the left, san rafael down toward the golden gate bridge. you see the entire quadrant of the east bay. looking at the east shore freeway. slowing for highway 4 through pittsburgh. nothing unusual. same thing for the tri-valley traveling over toward livermore and south on 680 through pleasanton and hayward. both areas building a bit in toward fremont. the live look shows you in fremont southbound 880 shows a nice smooth steady build. nothing dramatic. south bay, same thing.

northbound 101 does show slowing. starting to see a build again. this is the build that will stick to the morning commute. again, speeds are holding steady except for 101 north of here and 87 coming into downtown san jose. the build starts right now. if you guys ever played paint ball before? >> yes. >> can you imagine getting hit with a pellet? that would hurt. >> would not feel good. >> someone is shooting people with paintballs in one peninsula neighborhood.

in mountain view, not the way they planned. >> wait a minute, what is this. scott mcgrew, rare defeat? >> rare and unexpected. they said no to the city's biggest employer in taxpayer saying it would not grant google permission to make this amazing new headquarters. it's not going to get the land, the drawings by these two really innovative architects, really surprised the world. yoga down here and bike track up here. defeated by one city council vote. instead the bulk of the property is available will go to the other big company in mountain view linkedin. google does have to get bigger and consolidate so it's going to be interesting to see what other cities see an opportunity with google or, put another way, what will sam do? stocks fell yesterday. red arrows today on the open as well. this coming after the head of the fed janet yellen said she

thought there might be too much money in the stock market. i know what you're thinking. i'm sure you're just as interested in fed policy as i am. you're thinking, scott, that reminds me of what alan greenspan said before the dotcom bust. greenspan said back in 1996 in the midst of the boom how do we know when irrational exuberance has unduly escalated asset values? janet yellen said yesterday, i would highlight that equity valuations at this point are generally quite high. both are saying there may be too much money in the stock market. guy got so excited about two job offers he went on the question and answer site asked which one he should take. and then he lists the pros and cons of each. the. comments was that it's not a cool name. it wasn't a buzzword. he wrote, like, uber. and he would be worried people would not know where he worked if he worked at xenivitz.

it helped the kid make a decision by revoking the job offer. >> something was going to happen there as he put it out. >> process of elimination. no benefits for that young man. >> thank you. 6:15. it is a painful and really pretty bizarre prank. police say someone is going around firing paintballs ant random people walking on the street. >> you're right. "today in the bay's" bob ridell is live in palo alto this morning. while it seems like a painful prank, if caught these suspects could face some pretty serious charges. >> reporter: absolutely. a misdemeanor at the least, felony at the worst. palo alto police need your help in finding these people who went through a local neighborhood in palo alto tuesday night, picking targets at random with their paintball gun as they drove through the areas. you can look at the map and see the two areas where they were targeting people. one at the intersection of newell and dana. the other two on the 700 block of melville.

around 8:30 tuesday night. 12 or 14 green paintballs out out of their car at an elderly dmoum their 70s nape missed the wife but hit the husband in the hip. and then a few minutes later a mile away the suspects shot at a woman in 4er 40s. she was walking her dog. hit her in her hand, arm, and chest. they hit another woman in her 40s out for a walk with her husband. hit her in her hand. both women say the color of the car was gold, sedan with a rounded body type about 15 years old. they also heard a man cheering from the car after he hit his targets. all three people were hurt. they're going to be okay. worst case is that they were bruised. police say the charge for this kind of crime would be dismeaner battery. felony assault if someone were, say, hit in the eye if palo alto police are looking for the people. the suspect, at least one a man firing from the passenger side of the vehicle. reporting live here outside palo alto police, bob ridell, "today in the bay." >> not a cool thing to do. thanks, bob. 6:16. time to check that microclimate

forecast this morning. look at that. doppler radar shows wet weather heading towards the bay area. >> we also have a little bit of the thunder and lightning icon that was darting over there on the right side of the radar. christina is going to get to that. not a lot of rain so far. some showers though lightning. maybe iceven a little hail. i think you call this mountain thunder. exciting. >> it is exciting. we could see some of those thunderstorms cells drift right over the lower elevation. san martin, gilroy, you have a good chance for that. also, we look to see a little bit of that activity in the north bay as well. 6:17 is the time. what's so fascinating. look at southlake tahoe. you have a snow level down to 5,000 feet this morning in combination with thunderstorms. that is very rare occurrence, especially as we're now in may. our temperatures could be soaring. but, yeah, a little bit of lightning firing off southlake tahoe. fair, chance for that right here as we accumulate that daytime heating later on today. it fuels thunderstorms.

i want to fly you into the north bay and we're getting sure activitity at the coast. beautiful area here getting light shower activity and most of this is right on top of the marine county, sonoma county line. as we head throughout the morning hour, not expecting a lot. as we said before, the afternoon, warmer and a chance to improve. 50 grease right now in san francisco. you're at 50 to start the new day in san carlos. 49 degrees, comfortable conditions, not too bad. actually pretty mild out there this morning in san jose. mountain thunderstorms, best bet is going to be in the santa cruz mountains. over mt. st. helena in the north bay. over the east bay hills as well. let me take you through your changes via the day park forecast. stop the clock at noon today as you break for lunch. temps in the mid 60s. clouds increasing at this point. not expecting much shower activity until we get into about 4:00 this afternoon. that's when we are expecting the wide spread activity to move across the bay area. 72 degrees is the high for today

on the peninsula. 72 degrees in the east bay which is really unusual, especially with that snow level down to 5,000 feet. we've got two competing air masses and that is what's driving this thunderstorm chance. so low pressure to our north. high pressure to our south. that's what's keeping us warm. the two combined work against each other. we get that instalt. we're going to keep the chance going for tomorrow morning as well. so for tomorrow, temperatures stay steady. could see a little activity. best bet is going to be in the morning hours. then as we get into your mother's day weekend, beautiful conditions. that dry air mass will return to the bay area. we will be in the low 70s in the south bay. same 40 peninsula. 60s for san francisco. east bay looks good to hit the mid 70s, tri-valley, mid to upper 70s for you and the same for the north bay. comfortable conditions. good air quality. we're looking good to hit normal highs as we get into this weekend. a tough spot typically this time of morning. we also have a traffic alert in palo alto. let's check on that. here's mike inouye.

>> that's right. still tracking this crash. still blocking two lanes. top of your screen, see the flashing lights. two left lanes blocked by a fire crew on scene plumably the first to arrive to help with minor injuries reported. the jam all of the way back to half a mile on the approach. university avenue is where things start to slow down just south of this camera shot. we'll show you on the map. that's the worst of it for high why way 101. central or el camino get on it later. marsh and everything is clear north of there. 280 is clear. no delays across the san mateo bridge. great news heading over from the east bay. south bay, a little build starting 87, 101. this is when we start to see the volume increase in towards san jose. nothing unusual about this pattern. move over toward the tri-valley and east bay. tri-valley, west 580 and south 680. 680 south down through hayward heading both down fremont. highway 4 nothing unusual. antioch in toward concord for that build. approaching the bay bridge toll

good thursday morning to you. 6:24. more punishment today for the two men who beat giants fan brian stow into a coma. sanchez and norwood both pleaded goility to one count each of being felon in possession of a firearms and ammunition. in court today they each face up to ten additional years in prison. the two are already serving time after admitting to beating brian stow in the parking lot in 2011. detectives discovered the weapon while serving a search warrant on norwood's home during the investigation. they call him the golden boy and tom brady's sterling reputation is falling a little flat this morning. the nfl says that brady used the deflated and illegal footballs during the afc championship and he knew about it the entire

time. according to a report issued by the nfl a patriots locker room attendant who called himself, quote, the deflator, is named as the point person in the investigation. text messages that he sent to an equipment assistant suggested both of them acted on brady's behalf. the league has not announced a disciplinary action and brady is not commenting this morning. 49er once again accuse of bad behavior. two players linked to a sexual assault. former 49 ray mcdonald and ahmad brooks are named in the civil suit filed by gloria allred. allred says her client has asked not to be named. he also filed a motion to have a defamation lawsuit mcdonald filed against her client dismissed. it's illegal to file a lawsuit against someone who filed a lawsuit. >> we will not allow nfl football players or any other rich and famous person to intimidate persons whoal edge will that they are rape victims.

>> allred says surveillance video from mcdonald's former home in san jose will prove what happened back in december. her client says she was knocked unconscious after slipping by mcdonald's pool. she claims that's when brooks 2k3wr0e7 groped her. mcdonald's carried her upstairs and sexually assaulted her. mcdonald maintains it was consensual sex. the victim's attorney is investigating. 6:26. still ahead, they are the last people you would think would be skipping out on paying taxes. but think again. the new findings raising eyebrows about irs workers. raise your eyes to the skies as we look live outside. this is up by san bruno mountain this morning giving you a vista there and here as well in san jose. yes, rain in the works coming to the bay area. we're certainly excited about that as we're in this drought. how much, when, where, we'll check in with christina. 6:26.

the plains. tornados have touched down in the past 24 hours across tornadoes alley. 50 homes have been damaged or destroyed, including a mobile park in oklahoma city. this story might make you irate because a collector taxes but apparently they're not paying theirs. the government watchdog is reported that nearly 1600 irs employees are tax evaders. tracie potts is joining us live in washington, d.c. tracie, this investigation actually going back over several years. >> yes, it's going back over a decade, sam. the inspector general says the 1600 -- nearly 1600 people either claimed too many dependent or filed late or in some cases claimed the first time home buyers credit when they didn't buy a home at all. the law says if you work for the irs and you evade taxes then you get fired. but that only happened to about a quarter of these people. according to the report, some retired and resigned, but most of them got other disciplinary

action, some sort of reprimand or suspension. many of them, the reports says, got promotion and raises and bonuses from taxpayer money while they were not paying their taxes. that is certainly drawing the eyes of not only taxpayers but lawmakers here on capitol hill who want to know more about how this is happening at the irs. sam? >> all right. tracie potts live from washington. thank you so much. more missing money now. this time in san jose. the investigative unit is on the case. this past january was first exposed allegations from a former principal stealing money intended for the school and students. this morning we learned the santa clara district attorney's office is now looking into those claims. >> i'm not going to talk to you. >> that's former san jose high school principal carrie catching. we caught up with her in january. we wanted to ask her about thousands of dollars she spent from a secret account she opened. our report found she spent thousands of dollars on pricey

this one heads over towards the dumbarton bridge. chp told us there are no injuries. that's the good news. they don't know when they're going to clear all the cars. three were involved but there must be one with locked brake or something because this is taking a while. loob at your map. slow drive north from university past the scene. you can see the slow drive there. also tell you that el a.in picking up the volume and looking already. even middle field through the area. foothill expressway. 280. because the peninsula drives light, you have some options there. now, these folks on the bottom of your screen heading north for 101 through san jose starting to build there as well as 87 and 85. typical pattern for the south bay. building south through fremont, south 680 down in toward fremont as well. that's the general trend. typical flow for the tri-valley and east bay. zoom out, north of the san mateo bridge, no big surprises here. antioch and concord and the tri-valley. we talked about that. top of the screen. no slowing for the north bay.

any view voo of a fire at the airport in rome. flames destroyed the baggage storage area earlier this morning. a sea of absolutely huge bursts there. cellphone video showing the building fully engulfed. the cause of that fire is unknown. many flights were canceled or delayed. the airport is going to remain closed at least through the morning. >> wow, certainly large. 6:39. a warning for pet owners. jerky treats made in the united states is being linked to a

tainted pet food scandal that killed hundreds of dogs. the tainted treats are tied to a case going back eight years. starting in 2007 you may remember contaminated treats from china killed about 1,000 dogs. now some treats made in the u.s. are being made with toxic ingredients shipped from china. the fda is not identifying a specific brand of jerky treats or toxin but some vets rec men not buying any jerky treats at all until the fda can isolate the ingredients making dogs sick. senior prank but was it really vandalism essentially? 100 students in tennessee banned from their graduation because of what they did to their school. the students ransacked sequoia high school urinating on the walls, plopping gold fish in the toilets. teachers with forced to come in early and clean up the damage while the students waited in the gym. >> they poured marbles and oil

developing right now. a dozen of tornadoes leave a path of destruction across several states in the midwest. and this morning thousands of people are waking up to see the truex tent of the damage.

"today in the bay's" jay gray joins us live from oklahoma city. that is one of the hardest hit areas. jay, there's concern over more severe weather on the way. good morning. >> yeah, sam, laura, you're right. good morning to you. after going through what they did last night this area brace for another round of storms that could last through this weekend. the motel you see behind me were actually people in the rooms whipped away. miraculously survived. there's an rv park off to the side where 12 people were injured. two of those critically. as the sun has come up they're getting a firsthand look of what happened realizing as they clean up and try and get ready for this next round of storms the next round to be more severe. we'll have more about all of this on the "today" show coming up in a bit. back to you right now. >> that plus, jay, the flash flood warnings there as well. a lot going on in oklahoma city right now. thank you. a lot going on in our own weather department certainly not to that extent. we have a look at the

microclimate forecast. a peak outside first. this is over the sunol grade. we sure like our green hillsides. i heard they are getting a dusting of snow up in the sierra, christina. >> they certainly are. let's take it live. we have video to show you. this just in to our newsroom from donner summit. i can tell you right now we could accumulate up to a foot of snowfall later on today above 7,000 feet. we're actuallying looking really good for that. as we get into this afternoon and tonight, with some lingering activity all the way in to tomorrow morning. so i do want to take you to your radar and show you what we are expecting as we get into this afternoon. that's when we have the chance for thunderstorms right here in the bay area. radar picture shows you though all that snow, all the lightning firing off up in tahoe. temps in the 50s. we're on our way to the 70s. even with that snow coming down. very unusual system out there. 60s at lunchtime. 70s to finish off the day.

so here is deal. we've got high pressure to our south. and that's a warm and moist air mass. that's going to collide with this dry and cold system dropping in. it actually originated in the gulf of alaska. so that's what's going to produce all of that instability. best chance for thunderstorms will be in our local mountains. good news is, everything clears out in a timely fashion just in time for mother's day weekend. let's check on that traffic alert. here's mike. >> christina, we have much better news for the peninsula drivers. live shot in palo alto. look at that. stacked up the last time we looked. that crash cleared just seconds after i gave you that report. we'll look at the sensors. taking a few minutes to recover but that's why it's good we have the live cameras. this stretch will clear over the next few minutes. the last up sddate should show more yellow than red. good news and timing because the south bay is building up. 101 is heading into that area and westbound 237. that's your standard build for the south bay. holding steady for 680 and 880

as we move to the east bay and tri-valley. funneling down toward fremont funnel. that's better news for the freeways. smooth drive. in newark, mallory at cedar, word of a diesel spill by the new parkal. we'll have traffic controlled in the area. we'll trash that as well. not affecting a major freeway. it's off of the off-ramps. tri-valley we talked about. up here, highway 4. now the build over south 242 and 680. walnut creek interchange starts to build. start your traditional build and slowing because of the volume. north bay volume in towards san rafael, a tad. typical pattern. nice westbound flow. picking up the vol yaum. flowing there. the peninsula will start to build. reminds us may 8th through 11th, this mother's day weekend we have full closure of the span. avoid that any time after 7:00 or 8:00 p.m. just to be safe. oakland, 880 moves smoothly past

the coliseum. you see haze in the air. visibility is just fine for drivers. back to you. >> mike, thank you. a developing story in the south bay. san jose police want you to look at this man. they say he followed a 13-year-old girl home from school, forced his way inside-house and try to sexually assault her. she fought back and that suspect got away. kris sanchez joins us live from police headquarters in san jose. kris, this man will strike again. it's not a question of the or when. they've got to arrest him soon. >> reporter: that's what they say, sam. that 13-year-old girl may not have been that suspect's first victim and that's why police say he is confident and he may strike again. the family's surveillance cameras were rolling on tuesday afternoon when that man followed that 13-year-old girl into her home and forced his way on her in rio vista avenue in west san jose. san jose police say he fits a description of a man who followed a woman in her 20s on

saratoga of knew a month ago and session welly assaulted her there. san jose police say they believe the suspect will trike say again if he's not caught and though the girl wants to tell her story to urge someone to turn him in we are protecting her identity. >> i had fight this guy. and i'm thinking help me, help me, please. that was actually the only thing that was going through my mind. >> nothing is going to stop him. he's got the confidence to do it once. he had the confidence to do it again. he's going to strike again. and, again, what we want to do is prevent that third attack. we can simply do that if people mobilize. >> police say you can meeobiliz on social media in the next day or two. that would be a good thing because each of this alleged attacker's attacks has been bolder. police have notified schools because the latest victim is a middle school student. here's another look. the suspect is about 30 years old. average height, thin build with

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. steph, that area has seen an uptick in burglaries. >> that's right. good morning, laura. that's what san francisco police are warning. it's unclear if this man is behind any of the other burglaries but he was caught on camera breaking into this store here art of style on the 200 block of west portal avenue on april 21st. police just releasing the security camera footage. the man has a black hat, red shirt. walks by.

palo alto police say someone is going around shooting paintballs randomly at people walking on the street. >> it is both painful and dangerous. "today in the bay's" bob ridell live in palo alto this morning. bob, while it seems like a painful prank if caught the suspects are going to face pretty serious charges. >> palo alto police are treating this as a crime. misdemeanor battery or assault with a deadly weapon if they hit them in the dwri. that wasn't the case. look at the results of this video provided by an image from the police department of one of the paintball splashes not too far from prks d. these attacks happening tuesday night in a couple of locations and neighborhoods nearby. one at newell and dana. the other at the 700 block of melville. around 8:30 tuesday night. hit an elderly couple until their 70s out for a walk when the suspect came by in a car and fired 12 to 14 green paintballs at the couple. they missed the wife but hit the husband in the hip. and then a few minutes later if

and about a mile away the suspects on a 700 block of melville driving by there, shot at a woman in her 40s out with her dog. hit her in the hand. the arm, and the chest. and they hit another woman in her 40s out for a walk with her husband. hitting her in the hand. those women say the car was gold in color. it was a sedan, rounded body type about 15 years old. they did hear a man cheering from the car after he hit the targets. again, the women might have some bruising but all three people who were hit, they were in pain but they are going to be okay. again, palo alto police would like to find these suspects they know at least one person was in the passenger seat, a man. and obviously you have the driver as well. they don't know if there was anyone in the backseat. reporting live here in palo alto, robbery derob alto, robbery derbery. scientists say it was hit by a ship. the whale had four broken vertebra. hemorrhaging around at least one

broken rib. biologists from the marine mammal center cut into that 42-foot whale yesterday. another whale washed ashore in pacifica last month. no one knows how that sperm whale died. good news for commuters. b.a.r.t. is back on track after that transit system was hit by multiple mishaps yesterday. around 9:30 in the morning ten inches of track gave way between san francisco civic center and the 16th and mission street stations. it caused a domino effect of delays that lasted through the evening commute. overnight crews installed a permanent fix. then a power outage yesterday afternoon also causing some delays. new twist in the battle to save what may be the last affordable housing in palo alto. tlu plan to keep 400 residents from being evicted from the buono vista mobile home park. he has taken up the fight for dozens of families who were told that they were being evicted so the owner can renovate.
