for commuters who need to use the san mateo bridge. the closure not quite over yet. i'm stephanie chuang live on the bridge with what you need to know m. to vaccinate or not. the debate takes center stage in the bay area this morning. a bill set to go to the senate this week, but not before parents voice their concerns. torrential twister ripping across, up rooting tree, destroying schools, and the trouble is not over yet. let's look at the calm out there in the bay area by the bay bridge. it is monday, may 11th. this is "today in the bay."

y andrew youay, it's monday >> i like that enthusiasm. >> hope you're coming off a grate mother's day weekend. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we'll start with a look at your forecast. christina loren, a little cooler in spots. >> some spots are cool, some are milder this morning. we're starting out the new day at 53 in oakland. as we get into your afternoon, temperatures look just right but the big story in the weather department, good chance for showers coming your way as we head deeper into the week. in fact, we're getting the first opportunity as ofton in some spots. details on that coming up. right now, here's your drive with mike inouye. >> this is the san mateo bridge. stephanie chuang is going to tell you about what is happening there but right now, these pictures with the flash -- the lights going both directions east and eastbound from the hayward side over to the foster city side. the map will show you no slowing on the sensors. dumbarton bridge had a lot of

traffic this weekend. i saw a big jam over there, especially on either side of the span as you hit the land. smooth drive now on both sides of the bay and no problems for the north bay. we'll track this. back to you guys. i'm going to play mike inouye for a second. all good for the morning commute. a little bit more spike in there. cars are moving along the san mateo bridge after a weekend long closure. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live in san mateo this morning. steph, crews reopened the bridge ahead of schedule. >> reporter: yeah. that's right. you can see here on the hayward side the toll pla sda here, the traffic going westbound is flowing freely here. caltrans making the 5:00 a.m. goal. eastbound just opening up. i saw the first vehicle pass. this is after shutting it down starting friday night so crews could resurface, treat, and perform routine bridge maintenance. some work because it's pretty old stuff around here adding the asphalt here has been around since 1967.

senator jim bell's office in campbell. these parents oppose a bill to remove the personal belief exemption from current vaccination laws. right now parents can choose to exempt their children from vaccine for religious or personal reasons. the bill could change that banning unvaccinated children from public and private schools. >> it's very severe legislatile, over reaching parents having choose what gets ingested in their children. >> the bill may go to the full senate vote as early as this week. if it becomes law california will be the third state to allow medical exemptions to vaccination requirements. is there proof of police bias? new data showing san jose officers are pulling over and questioning more blacks and latinos compared to other races. the paper looked at police activity from january through september and the report shows although blacks and latinos maybe up one-third of the city's population, those groups

represented nearly two-thirds of all traffic stops. once stopped, they were significantly more likely to be ordered out of their vehicles, frisked, and cars searched. 6% of the stops ended with an arrest. memorial service heldton for a mother and baby daughter killed by an alleged drunch driver. friends are invited to remember esperanza morales and her 14-month-old juli. ton's service begins at 7:00 at st. francis xavier church on lasalle avenue in seaside. mother and daughter will be buried in mexico. >> very sad story. 4:35. the call girl charged ♪ death of a google exec back in court today. a judge is expected to set a preliminary hearing drat for 27-year-old alex tickleman. accused of injecting forest hayes with a lethal dose of heroin on his yacht. it happened in the santa cruz

harbor in november of 2013. tickleman faces felony manslaughter charges for leaving the boat as hayes lie dying. a nurse is back in the u.s. after spending ten days in nepal helping with recovery efforts. it was a happy mother's day who reunite with her family. her volunteered at hospital in nepal to help the thousands of victims effected by last nont's massive earthquake. she says she will remember the stories and the people who were resilient in an incredibly difficult time. >> they had mentioned that they had lost their home and they had nothing but they had each other. >> she works with a non-profit base in centerville called reserge. everyone is accounted for after a late night tornado that ripped through a small texas town. little warning. injuring at least 26 people. crews went door to door helping people to safety. about one-third of that town was damaged and several homes

completely destroyed. earlier in the day another tornado ripped roofs off of buildings near denton 40 miles north of dallas. that destruction follows the death of one person a day earlier in a tornado in central texas. >> this is something you only see in movies. it's something that only -- it doesn't happen to your hometown. you walk through and, i don't know, the people you are with, you know, couple days ago might not still have homes anymore. >> real life in that suburb president in the last efrl days e. mated 25 tornadoes struck parts of texas, oklahoma, kansas, and south dakota. >> people really have to ban together to try to repair now. >> absolutely. so much activity in the midwest. what is the activity like in the bay area for this week? start off with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> we have a great looking week ahead. 54 in san carlos to start the new day. 53 in oakland. hopefully you had a great

weekend. recharged, batteries ready to go for a brand new pattern. things are going to be different this week. let me show you the noon temperatures across the microclimate. a little bit on the cool side today through your lunch hour. 59 degrees at noon on the peninsula. 59 degrees for the east shore. 61 degrees out in the tri-valley. rounding out the day only in the mid 60s. a couple isolated 70s in the warmest cities across the bay area really focusing on that for the north bay. elsewhere, though, mid 60s for the south bay. peninsula, east bay, tri-valley, and san francisco, you will be in the low 60s for today. now, the big news in the weather department we've got an area of low pressure, cutoff low to hit the bay area later this week. could bring more thunderstorm activity. we are expecting showers. we'll detail that for where you live in just moments. tell you how much rain we are expecting. first though i want to check your drive. we don't want any surprises in the traffic department, mike, good morning. >> folk, we're looking over here. no surprise except for a little

treat. we have a couple minutes extra to drive across the san mateo bridge. they reopened at 4:18 this morning. that sounds like an exact time from caltrans. smooth drive. bottom of your screen, flashing lights on either side of the roadway there. there are crews that have just cleared from the span. look at our map. showing you no slowing. thumbs up for 92. dumbarton bridge, you get a thumbs up as well because you saw a lot of traffic over the weekend. back to the morning commute. there's the slowdown westbound out of the altamont pass. earlier crash is just about completely cleared from the roadway. typical pattern here. coing into the tri-valley. as we look at the north bay, no slowing. a live look here for the golden gate. beautiful flow in toward the city, the south bay, and peninsula. no delays, no problems. >> all right. starting monday out with a clean slate. concord man became an instant millionaire after buying a scratcher ticket. why not give it a shot. he brought that lucky ticket at the super liquor and food on

put out a list on the best american cities to invest in. new york city finished first. san francisco second. no surprises there. what about this one? sunnyvale finishes fifth. intelligent looked at 421 u.s. cities judging in categories like economic potential, business, friendliness, lifestyle, and connectivity. >> here's an investment we would like to see pay off. that bullet train is going to be a bargain. for less than $100 you might soon be able to get from san francisco to los angeles if l.a. times is report that fares for the newly planned bullet train could be around 86 bucks. roughly 20 cents a mile that would mark one of the world's cheapest high-speed rail trips. if completed, the bug let train would connect san francisco and los angeles by 2029. ordering with a swipe of a fi fing finger. now when you use your smartphone to look up a restaurant on google, there will be a place and order option.

typically get a little bit of shower active thank you bity bue we've had this month. potentially next week as well. that's our first chance for showers. i continue your future cast. stop it again at 12:00 p.m. on thursday. look at this. we've got wide spread shower activity working its way as far south as los angeles. i take you later into the week. by friday, getting another round of rich moisture. and this is great story to be able to tell in the heart of our drought. so that's good news for us. also going to keep things nice and moist and keep this elevated fire danger from creeping up. here we go. let me take you through our temperatures. staying relatively steady. up to 69 degrees by wednesday. even with the showers coming through we're not going to lose a lot of warmth. 67 degrees on thursday. 65 degrees on friday in the south bay. meanwhile, low 60s for san francisco. your east bay valleys looking good to hit the 70s for the

first part of the week down to the upper 60s wednesday into thursday. sam and laura, back to you. >> thanks, christina. it's 4:48. ton the nbc bay area investigative unit looks into the safety of popular summer camp with bay area families. the camp is a summer camp near yosemite. nearly two years ago 21-year-old art teacher retton berg was killed and three other staff members were hurt when a huge 300-year-old black oak tree fell in the middle of the camp. the nbc bay area investigative unit poured through thousands of pages of court documents and discovered the camp had been warned about this tree years before the tragedy. >> there was a terrible thing that happened at camp tawanga. and i have every reason to believe it could have been avoided. >> the camp never responded to our repeated request for an interview but now for the first time since her death her parents are speaking out. be sure to watch vicky nguyen's
