a.m. deadline. eastbound just opened half an hour ago. it was closed to traffic starting friday night so crews could resurface, treat, and perform routine bridge maintenanmap maintenan maintenance. caltrans said some of the asphalt had been around since 1967. more than 100,000 drivers use the bridge every day. >> notice a smoother ride. they'll notice some -- a quiet ore ride and toll what sa has been maintained and cleaned. >> california trans points out it was a busy weekend in addition to this closure you had mother's day, sporting events. you had alternate ruts, the dumbarton and 237 which should come in handy again because the bridge should be closed again for memorial day weekend. caltrans says it's just to finish up more of the same kind of work. live in hayward, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." stay in the know. you can get traffic alerts os

our nbc bay area app. download it on your iphone and android devices. the best part, it's free. happening today, it could impact nearly every student in california. this morning dozens of south bay moms and dads are protesting the highly controversial mandatory vaccination bill. >> "today in the bay's" bob ridell is joining us live in campbell, the site of the co-author of that bill where parents are going to be rallying hours from now. good morning. >> reporter: at 11:00 a.m. this morning parents are expected to protest outside of state senator jim bell's office here in campbell to express their displeasure for state senate bill 277. yesterday align stein of san jose, a parent who opposes the legislation, sb-2277 would require parents to have their children vaccinated in order to attend school. otherwise, they would have to home-school their children. noukser ste stein has a son with autism who

she believes was caused in part because of vaccination. right now parents like stein can choose to exempt their children from vaccines for religious or personal reasons. the bill would change that, banning unvaccinated children from public and private schools. >> it's very severe legislation. kind of over reaching parents having the right to choose what gets ingested in their children. >> reporter: in a concession to those opposed to this legislation, the author of the bills, this bill agreed to grandfather in many public and private school students whose parents have already claimed personal belief exemptions. the bill may go to a full senate vote this week. if it becomes law california will be the third state to allow only medical exempt shups to vaccination requirements. reporting live in campbell, bob ridell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. is there proof of police bias? new data showing san jose police officers are pulling over and

questioning more blacks and latinos compared to other races. that according to a report from the san jose mercury news. the paper looked at police activity from january through september and found that although blacks and latinos make up one-third of san jose op place the groups represented nearly two-thirds of all traffic stops. one stopped, blacks and latinos or significantly more likely to be ordered out of vehicles, frisked, and cars searched. only 6% of all the stops ended with an arrest. it is 5:04. memorial service heldton for a mother and baby daughter killed by an alleged drunk driver. friends, family, and neighbors are invited to remember ez per ran sa rodriguez and her 14-month-old daughter juli. brian jones was drunk when he hit the two on a sidewalk in livermore. ton service is at 7:00 at st. francis xavier search on lasalle avenue in seaside. mother and daughter will be

buried in mexico. developing news in the south. extreme weather there with a clean-up just beginning in the aftermath of several destructive tornados. >> they were hit so hard. kris sanchez has what people in the nation's mid section are waking up to this morning. >> this is just one of the dramatic rescues that people are hope for today. there are ten people who are still unaccounted for in van, texas, and hope is they will be found alive. we'll take you to van in a moment but first in arkansas where we're getting a first daylight look at the damage this morning. that's our flood waters washed away roads and fosted a state of emergency. in next though you didn't need the daylight to see how badly the town of van was steamrolled be they storm. southeast of dallas, cars are crushed. trees uprooted. as of this morning more than two dozen people are hurt. 30 h 30% of that town was damaged. ten people still unaccounted for. one young man said it's like nothing he's ever seen. >> this is something you've only

seen inmovies. it's something that doesn't happen to your hometown. you walk through and, i don't know, the people that you were with, you know, a couple days ago might not still have homes anymore. but it's just sad to see. really breathtaking. >> reporter: this is what it looked like as the storm bore down on the college town of denton which is north of dallas. southeast of there, dramatic rescues as folks were plucked from the rooftop of homes nearly completely supposed merged. an hour's drive from there two men rescued from the roof of their truck just in the nick of time. national guard helicopter had to lower a crew and bring them -- hoist them up using cables where a creek overflowed the banks. in south dakota, a church nearly leveled and about two dozen other buildings were destroyed by a tornado there. the folks who live there have no power, no water, and now the red cross is assisting the victims who have nowhere to go. the entire town is under evacuation orders. as we said, ten people still

missing in van, texas. we're going to keep track of that. we have a crew there and we're checking in with them to make sure that hopefully those folks are found alive. sam? >> we certainly hope they will be. check back with you, kris. thank you. dramatic rescue this from contra costa county. a local one. chp using a helicopter to hoist a 74-year-old woman near the summit of mt. diablo. this happening yesterday afternoon. officials say that she had fallen while hiking and once they lifted her she was taken immediately to the hospital. no word right now on her condition. >> luckily they could get to her. >> yes. she seemed to be wrapped up tight, there too. hopefully she will be okay. meteorologist christina loren joining us right now with a look of the temperatures. the forecast today. >> yeah, it's looking good for today. we are going to keep tabs on that severe weather rolling through the mid section of the nation. we are not out of the woods just yet. expecting another round of severe storms. we'll talk about that coming up. 50s to start here in the bay area. meanwhile, calm conditions for

now. that wind is going to intensify as we head throughout the day today. and you know what that means. that pollen will be drifting around. so keep that allergy medication handy. if you'll suffer from the allergies of this season. weather story of the day, wide spread low clouds to start. a sunny and breezy finish to your monday. and temperatures will likely warrant a jacket. at least throughout the first part of the day. we stop that clock for you at noon today on your day part forecast. the temperatures are still going to be chilly at that point in the upper 50s on the peninsula. san francisco, the east bay, and even here in the south bay. kind of a cool day shaping up at least for the first part. we'll round out the days. the highs come in at 4:00 p.m. at 66 degrees out in the tri-valley. 63 for the east shore. 62 degrees along the peninsula. and 65 degrees in the south bay. so do count on that wind to incense fi between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. as that afternoon wind picks up. that's when you really want to keep the allergy medicine handy. we've got below average temperatures coming your way all of the way through wednesday.

win, why not try? a concord man pleased with his decision after becoming an instant millionaire from a scratcher's ticket. he bought it at the super lick you're a cure and food at the monument boulevard. another location sold a million dollar powerball ticket last year. more than 100 people were inside an iowa high school when the roof was just ripped off by the tornado. the whole thing was caught on camera. the one thing teachers did to protect the students after the break. los angeles police station evacuated when a woman walks in with a grenade. but she wasn't threatening to blow up the building. plus, cars get in a little bit more accidents than we thought. we'll take a look at who was at fault though.

. monday morning, a live look outside right now. that's san mateo i imagine from is open and fleeing. maybe some drivers felt apprehension that it wouldn't get open on time. it opened before 5:00.

more on that going on later this morning. what sounds like a threatening move, a woman brought a grenade into an lapd station. it was an innocent move. the woman told police the department's mission station she found that grenade while cleaning out her garage. she thinks it belonged to her brother who was a war veteran. a station and off-ramp was closed for three hours while the bomb squad removed the device. two bay area cities topped most anywhere in the america. one may be a surprised. uk-based intelligence magazine put out a survey. new york city is first. san francisco is second. sunnyvale finished 50. >> pat:. "intelligence" looked at 421 cities judging on economic potential, business, friendliness, lifestyle, and connectivity. now we're talking about investment and maybe voters in california didn't think they were getting the best bang for

their buck when they and proved a bullet train but it could prove to be a bargain. for less than 100 bucks you can get from san francisco to los angeles. the l.a. times reporting this morning the fares for the new planned bullet train could be around 86 bucks. roughly 20 centses a mile it would be one of the world's cheapest high speed rail trips if completed. the bullet train would connect san francisco and los angeles by 2029. >> right now we'll take you to fresno for 50 bucks. ordering food with a swipe of a finger google wants to make your next takeout or delivery order simple. when you use your smartphone to look up a restaurant on google there will be a place and order option. there are currently six food ordering sites including grub hub, seamless, and mypizza.com. >> limitless options. >> bottomless bowl. google's self driving cars have been in at least four accidents. >> self-driving cars. wait a minute. this according to a new data

made available to the state of california. under new reporting laws. scott mcgrew, robots have to report their accidents as well. >> they do. it would appear while the robot cars have been in accidents they have not really been at fault, sam. the data shows there have been four accidents involving self-driving cars in the past year. in one it was event in self-driving mode. there was a person driving it and it was hit at stop sign. i don't know that you count that. "associated press" which went over the data says only two accidents occurred when the robot was driving and they were both under ten miles an hour. yahoo! is suing up with of the former employees for allowing the book authored to access internal documents in order to write a book about this woman,y hoo ceo marissa mayer. they gave nicholas carlson access to a password protected site. it made more interesting by all the internal documents the rest

of us were not able to see. let's turn to landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, landon. >> good morning. the markets could be under a little pressure to start the week after stocks rallied friday following a somewhat positive jobs report that could reduce some investor fears about fed interest rate hike in the near term. look for data this week on retail sales and inflation and the consumer and earnings from retailers such as macy's. on friday the dow was 267 points to 18191. as that closing from 58 to 5004. back to you. >> you heard landon say somewhat positive. some people are calling friday's report a goldilocks jobs number. the data showed we returned to the days of 200,000 plus jobs added per month. so that's the good news. but landon points out the number not too high. not high enough to cause the fed to raise rates more quickly than hey already manned so that number is just right.

5.4% unemployment nationwide. california, guys, still 6 1/2%. the amazing thin is there are ten states, top ten, that are below 4%. economists call that full employment. that's actually almost too low because then you begin to have real competition for salary or for workers and salaries go through the roof. good for us. >> big competition. >> again, we're just right. >> just right. >> there you go. >> thank you, scott. there goes the school. there goes the school. >> frightening to watch. more than 100 people were inside a high school that took a direct hit from a tornado in iowa. the parents of a student watched on as the roof was just ripped off. the school was out but students and tich teachers were inside attending an awards ceremony. they got warning and the school leaders ushered everyone into the basement. no one was hurt. there was extensive damage.

>> so scary that people were in the school at the time. i'm sure you covered your share of that. >> a lot of places equipped with tornado shelters as well. we don't have to deal with anything like that here if we ever do see tornadic rotation it comes along with thunderstorms. whenever you see the severe thunderstorms that's what drives the tornadoes. we're going to take a close look at what part of the nation is actually dealing with that severe threat as we head throughout the day today. right off the top of your 6:00 newscast. stick around with us. we will get to that. if you can't, if you've got to get to work, mike is going to be here to help you the so in just a moment. starting out if the 40s and 50s. nice full blanket of cloud cover overhead. that's keeping temperatures nice and comfortable. we're at 52 degrees in san francisco. 53 in the tri-valley. 54 degrees on the peninsula on our way to the mid 60s later on today for most of us. although we will see isolated 70s in places like the north bay. comfortable conditions for wine country. then we have wind. this is going to intensify as we

head throughout the day. take you to your future cast. looking for the strongest wind, warmest colors. that's an indication of where that fierce wind will be whipping be i the day's end. i stop that clock for you at 7:00 p.m. that's when that wind will be strongest, especially up and down the peninsula, the north bay coast, and through your east bay hillside. the wind prone areas across the bay definitely going to get hit by some fierce winds later today. just keep that in mind. tie downey loose objects in your backyard. the reason why that wind is going to intensify is because we've got an area of low pressure just offshore. it's kicking high pressure out of the area. the two work against each other with we get a it too pressure gradient. i take you to the 5:00 hour on wednesday. that's when that area of low pressure that's trying to get in the bay area right now will arrive. this is going to bring us shower activity. much needed shower activity. obviously we are in the heart of a drought. i take you now into thursday at 9:00 a.m. wide spread activity continues at that point. temperatures are going to stay relatively steady.

so we'll tell you how much we're expecting where you live coming up. right now i want to check your drive. >> good morning. we're looking at the entire bay and as you would expect at 5:20, very light volume. an hour ago both direction in the san mateo bridge reopened and the overhead signs for the most part reflect that but you will see the track, the ones on the trailers near the bridge are still registers for a few of them that the bridge is closed. they have to change that by hand. 92 is open across the water. the next closure will be memorial day in two weeks. west 580. the build. typical pattern over here toward the tri-valley. no surprise. just a little slowing in toward dublin and dublin interchange. the bay area's bridge, the area around the bay bridge is moving nicely. slowing is on surface streets but not the east shore freeway. live look at the bay bridge. end with this shot as you see the cash lane is on the left approach, one cash lane may not be open. i'll double-check to make sure there are no problems. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 5:21.

dad stepped up big with a baby in tow during a mother's day baseball game in philadelphia. it happened on a hot foul ball into the second deck of philly fan stands up to make, boy, that great snag with 7-month-old son strapped to his chest. it was his son's first game and first foul ball he ever caught. the mom called it the capper on mother's day. the general manager said he was at tefshed to sign this guy. a controversial figure in the giant's championship run will finally get a ring on his finger. he will receive his third world series ring in i've years. oakland as host the boston red soxton. as any giants fan will show you panda is now a red sox. giants manager bruce boche will visit sandoval at the hotel and present the hardware. >> the giants, of course, classy organization there. family of oautistic girl ges kicked off a plane.

new this morning. amazing video. take a look at this. the stage collapse in china. it happened saturday when 80 members of the choir, they were rehearsing for a concert. they were just sing for about 20 seconds. look at this. the stage just gives way. everyone just fell about 15 feet. you can hear the people in the audience screaming. about ten people were hurt but they're said to be fine. >> a heartless act on mothers's day had some people in wisconsin very upset. someone stole a baby kangaroo from its mothers's pouch at the wisconsin zoo. four baby goats were also taken.

zoo operators confirm that theft yesterday on mother's day. the mother kangaroo was injured when it happened. they never had sure skral lance cameras. now they're going to rethink that policy. united airlines is catching heat for kicking a family off their flight due to an autistic te ager. this youtube video captured last week's incident. dr. bigley, an oregon mother, says 15-year-old daughter became agitated on the flight because she was hungry and had started calming down after eating. that's when flight attendants called for an emergency landing nape felt her daughter was disruptive. other passengers can be heard calling it ridiculous. she has filed a complaint with the faa and plans to sue. the airline says the crew made the decision for the safety and comfort of its customers. >> hard to tell from that video. a very special mother's day for one southern california family. >> a 6-year-old girl very likely

saved her mother's life. >> she had gone into a diabetic coma. so 6-year-old madison nunez sprung into action, calling her grant grandparents on face time and they told madison to call 911. >> i told them that my mom froze. >> for mother's day i'm going to be cherishing her, you know? she saved my life. >> wow. paramedics treated her on the scene and when they told her that madison was the one who contacted them, a huge smile appeared on mom's face. >> wonderful. you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we have developing news for you. a small city in texas ripped apart bay tornado is now left to pick up the pieces. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is here with the latest developments for us. these folks have had it rough. >> they're hoping for more rescues like this one because this morning there are ten people unaccounted for in that small texas town called van. we'll take you there in a minute but we want to start in iowa where the whole school was nearly blown off the snap. >> there goes the school. there goes to school. >> believe it or not the 100 students and staff inside at the time are all fine. they managed to take cover in the basement before that building took that direct hit. two arkansas now. the first daylight look at the damage this morning where flood waters washed away the roads and forced a state of emergency. to van, texas, even in the dark you can see how badly the town was steamrolled by that storm around tornado.

that they are opposed to this vaccination bill that he has co-authored. if sb-277 does become law, it would require parents in the state to vaccinate their children in order for them to attend school. otherwise, they would have to home-school them. now, lane shtein of san jose have the sign ready for the protests, believe vaccines did play a role in her 6-year-old son's autism which is why she hasn't had her daughter complete her vaccinations. now, he is against sb-277 because it would remove the personal belief exemption from current vaccination law. right now parents can choose to exempt their children from vaccines for religious or personal reasons. the bill would change that, banning unvaccinated children from public and private schools. >> we don't want to be told what inject in our kids and what's next, is it going to be a multi-vitamin that every child has to take? >> we do not need to have families worry about having their children exposed to a very

preventable disease. >> that was state senator richard pan who authored this bill and he also happens to be a pediatrician. in a concession to those who oppose this legislation, he has agreed to grandfather in many public and private school students whose parents have already claimed personal belief exemptions. in other words, people from here on out will not be allowed to do that. this should become law or go before the full senate as early as this next week. >> bob, thank you very much. at 5:36. a our traffic camera captured this scene on san bruno mountain after the fire broke out around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. a lot of fog out there. kind of hard to see but you can see the smoke out there in the distance. strong winds made it difficult to contain. 90 firefighters, a helicopter, two planes finally put out the 11:00 acre fire just before

5:00. there were no injuries or structures damaged. fire officials are trying to figure out what caused it. >> they really attacked it as much as they could and they did it. time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> new week, brand new forecast. temperatures this morning are a bill on the mild side. a blanket of low cloud cover. across the greater bay area and temperatures for today look spectacular. really comfortable. that natural ac coming in off the pacific ocean. and so far it's been really mild this may so far. you probably haven't had to use your ac all that many times. 52 degrees to start the day in san francisco. 51 degrees in san jose. here's a weather story. the wide spread low clouds will make way to beautiful sunny finish. then the breeze will pick up. if you do suffer from pollen, watch out for the drifting pollen as we head throughout the day today. you want to keep that allergy medicine handy. it's been a rough pollen year for the entire nation. temps for your various

microclimate shows you, chilly side. 59 on the peninsula at noon today. 58 in san francisco. 61 as you get out there, break for lunch. getting through your monday in the tri-valley. 59 degrees in the east bay. and then the warmest point of the day is 4:00 p.m. temperatures will be comfortable at that point. 65 degrees in the south bay for today. 62 on the peninsula. 63 degrees out there on the east shore. your weather headlines tell the story. the wind will increase for today. staying below average all of the way through wednesday. showers arrive. we are talking about generous rainfall mid week. more on that in moments. right now let's check your drive. >> looking to the san mateo bridge which reopened a few minutes earlier than expected. a few minutes before 5:00. these signs though, overhead signs i'm pointing to were changed automatically but as we look at your maps on the approach the trailer signs that are on the approach, portable one on either side of the bridge, they may still say the span is closed. caltrans has to change those by hand. they should be cleared up by 6:00, 6:30 at the latest. 92 is open.

to tell us what is causing it and whether the water is safe to drink. >> reporter: laura and sam, the message from east bay m.u.d. is that don't worry, it is safe or it's 1.3 million customers though it will likely taste and smell different than what people are used to. that could start as early aston or tomorrow morning. now, the reason, you can basically blame it on both the drought and the salmon. the usual water source for customers are the rif in the sierra, nevada, but that river water is reserved for the salmon to protect spawning habits. because of the drought east bay m.u.d. is having to get the water from a different alternative source, the party dam, which is higher up which means it has more sun exposure and more algae blooms and therein lies the cause of why your water may taste more funky than usual. east bay m.u.d. did this in march and got 1,000 complaints but it stresses it is treating all the water and it is safe for drinking. the water agency here acknowledging this isn't ideal
