>> meanwhile mother's day was tough for a lot of people in the country. it's our top story this morning. that severe weather impacting tens of millions of people. tornadoes and flash flooding in the south and the midwest. the carolinas getting soaked by the remnants of ana. in colorado nearly two feet of snow. we've got it all covered starting with nbc's kerry sanders who is in texas. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. a tremendous amount of damage not only from tornadoes, but there's been a lot of rain. the ground here is saturated. you can see here that saturated rain in the ground along with flash floods have set off problems with things like this sinkhole. but the most damage coming from tornadoes. >> tornado just hit our town! >> reporter: more than two dozen people were injured and some homes were fully destroyed after

a severe storm struck the small town of van in northeast texas. >> this is something you only see in movies. seeing where the homes once stood and they're not there anymore. >> reporter: and there was a huge twisting in iowa where it ripped off the roof of the building. inside for a banquet, 125 people hunkered down. remarkably, no one was seriously injured. these weather systems from south dakota to texas creating chaos also packed drenching rain. in krum, texas, up to 4 inches of rain in an hour led to flash floods. >> it went all of a sudden. there was nothing you could do if you saw it coming. >> reporter: the national guard rescued a half dozen residents trapped by the flood waters. >> i knew i was scared but i knew she was going to be okay. >> reporter: this 76-year-old was standing on the bed with the rising waters already soaking her feet when a national guardsman came through her

window. >> i'm dressed in hospital garb. >> reporter: because everything's gone? >> everything's gone. >> reporter: how powerful were those flash floods? that woman said as the waters came and she was being hoisted up to a helicopter, it swept through her front yard, took her car. they found her car washed down the street more than a mile away. >> all right. kerry sanders in texas for us, thank you very much. >> and al, who's going to get it today? >> it's a much wider swath. we're talking almost 60 million people being affected by severe weather today. we've got it going on right now. in fact, as you look down in southern texas where you've got a flood watch and severe thunderstorm watch in effect, we've got severe thunderstorm warnings also just to the east of del rio, texas. this is all part of a line that's going to stretch from chicago all the way back into texas. stronger storms fire up later this afternoon. the upper midwest on into western pennsylvania.

so we have a risk today stretching from western pa, southern michigan, all the way down into texas. 57 million people at risk. greatest chance for tornadoes will be in southeastern michigan, indiana, and ohio. so the northern part of this line later on this afternoon. and we also have flood watches and flash flood watches and warnings from arkansas into texas. why? look at this. we're looking in the next three days about 3 to 4 inches. but by the weekend we're talking anywhere from 5 to 7 inches of rain in central and southern texas. their drought has been taken care of pretty well but at a real cost. >> we'll keep an eye on all of that. thank you very much. we're also keeping an eye on ana. the remnants of the first named storm of the season dumping rains on parts of north carolina and virginia. "today's" dylan dreyer is in virginia beach. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. yeah, the remnants of tropical storm ana has made their way to virginia beach.

this is now the earliest tropical storm to hit this far north on the atlantic coast before hurricane season even starts on june 1st. it made landfall in myrtle beach, south carolina, where it produced nearly 6 inches of rain. we also saw peak wind gusts at 50 to 60 miles per hour. the coast of north carolina picked up 2 to 4 inches of rain. beach erosion was the biggest concern because of the rough surf. now, here today we are looking at those torrential tropical downpours that could lead to some brief urban flooding. but the biggest concern here will be for the rip currents in the ocean. tomorrow it's going to be about 90 degrees here. with folks at the beach, they really need to keep that in mind. and i want to point out a preseason storm this early is no indication that it's going to be a bad hurricane season, but of course we'll see how that all plays out. >> dylan, thank you.

meantime, we'll go to mississippi. it was an emotional scene in the town of hattiesburg last night at a vigil for two police officers who were gunned down during a weekend traffic stop. they are the first officers killed in the line of duty in that town in three decades. gabe gutierrez has the latest in this story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. a fourth arrest has now been made in this case. all four suspects are due in court later today. the death of these police officers has shocked this close knit community. overnight in hattiesburg, a candlelight vigil. the city mourning the deaths of 34-year-old benjamin deen. and liquori tate, a 25-year-old rack rookie of the police academy. >> they took away my baby. >> reporter: on mother's day yolana ross had this message for the killer. >> the hurt is unbearable.

>> reporter: his family says tate wanted to be a police officer since he was 4. >> he was a hero. he backed up his partner. >> reporter: police say officer deen stopped the vehicle. when officer tate came to back up, both were hit. following a manhunt -- >> did you do it? >> reporter: police arrested curtis banks and charged him with being an accessory. a fourth suspect cornelius clark was later charged with obstruction of justice. the shooting comes as police around the country are on edge. thousands mourning a naulen nypd officer on friday. the number of officers ambushed and killed last year was three times higher than the year before. but hattiesburg's mayor does not think deen and tate were targeted. >> i think we had police

officers in the wrong place at the wrong time. someone who didn't want to go to jail, would rather shoot his way out. >> reporter: these are the first officers killed in the line of duty in this town in more than 30 years. a memorial service is planned for later today. >> the suspects due in court as well. thank you very much. u.s. military bases beginning a first full week on a heightened state of alert today. that's in response to the concerns about isis using social media to prompt attacks here at home. nbc justice correspondent pete williams has more on that. hi, pete. >> reporter: hey, matt. good morni the fbi and homeland security are urging police around the country to be extra vigilant. and they say it's important for people to speak up if they know someone that could be inspired by social media to become violent. the plot to attack in texas and the fbi says it was inspired by social media messages from isis have added another dimension

about attacks by home-grown extremists. >> we're very definitely in a new phase in the global terrorist threat where the so-called lone wolf could strike at any moment. >> reporter: the fbi director says hundreds of people in the u.s. are communicating with isis sympathizers on social media. as was elton simpson who attacked at the texas event. because it's not possible to put every potential suspect under surveillance, officials say public help is essential. >> this is a new phenomenon for parents where the social media may be reaching your kids in the basement of the home without your knowledge. reach out, spot what's going on. when you see it, act. >> reporter: justice department officials insist that public help is important.

stop on saturday night. a vigil planned for those officers this afternoon. and the defense is expected to call its last witness today in the penalty phase of the boston marathon bombing trial. dzhokhar tsarnaev who was convicted of all 30 charges in the attack is facing a death sentence or life in prison. but let us begin this half hour with the big question facing nfl commissioner roger goodell. what punishment might tom brady face in deflategate? craig melvin has the latest on that. >> reporter: good morning, guys. many observers at this point believe his suspension is not a matter of if but when. this morning league officials are responding to reports that a punishment for the nfl's biggest star is imminent 37. this morning has the nfl decided tom brady's fate? faculty multiple news reports indicate the nfl will suspend brady this

week. writing the only question now is how many games with which goodell will hit the league's star player. but an nfl spokesperson tells nbc news no decisions have been made. no timetable. goodell has vowed they will protect the integrity of the game as brady refused to turn over his home or any e-mails. >> i believe tom brady is going to be suspended. the question is how many games. we routinely see players suspended for smoking marijuana for getting in trouble off the field. as reprehensible as some of the off the field incidents are, they have no relation to the integrity of the game. >> reporter: included baltimore ravens star ray rice who was suspended with video surfaced of rice knocking out his then-fiance in an elevator. he was later cut. and adrian peterson.

he was suspended last season after pleading. and cleveland browns receiver josh gordon suspended for a year after repeatedly violating the substance abuse policy. as brady awaits word peyton manning stopped short of defending his rival. >> he's my friend. he'll always be my friend. i don't know what happened. i don't have much more than that for you. >> reporter: brady has denied any involvement in deflategate despite the report by ted wells finding, quote, it was more probable than not that brady was at least generally aware. brady's agent calls that report a disappointment accusing investigators of leaving out key portions of brady's testimony. matt? >> all right. thank you very much. nancy armor is a columnist for usa today. she's been all over deflategate. >> good morning. >> roger goodell says he will do what it takes to protect the integrity of the game. it goes to the integrity of the

game. is goodell in a box? >> he is. and you hit it on the head. this is -- you know we're talking about deflating footballs. it's not -- in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal. but if you are tampering with footballs, you are tampering with the integrity of the game nap is something that will not be acceptable. >> let me read you some factors. kind of a laundry list. you tell me how you think these factors should impact the penalty that tom brady faces. tom bray is one the most high-profile most glamorous players in the nfl. >> if you don't punish him, what does that send to others? if you want to prevent others from doing this what better way than to make an example of him. >> tom brady refused to turn over text messages to investigators looking into deflategate. >> and that could be seen as conduct detrimental to the league. >> and that brady was quote, at least generally aware, end

quote, of what was going on with those balls. that sounds wishy washy to most people. >> it does but that is the burden of proof for the nfl. that's their way of saying yes he did it. >> roger goodell and bob kraft the owner of the patriots are very close friends. how might that impact the punishment? >> i think that actually hurts the patriots more than anything. because goodell can't be seen as showing favoritism to any team particularly one that he's close to their owner. >> you're on the clock. what's the penalty? who should be handed down? >> i think it'll be a game or two games. i think it will end up being two games again just because they have to sent a message. >> two games is the same penalty that roger goodell initially handed down to ray rice after that brutal punch to his wife in that elevator. now, one was an assault and the other is a technical rules violation. but what impact does one have on the other? >> i think, yeah there will be a lot of people who will say

for after this powerful tornado ripped through the town of van. take a look at the field of destruction. uprooted trees shingles from houses that are no longer standing on their foundation. dozens of homes completely destroyed or very badly damaged. shingles from the roof all over town here. a lot of damage and, again, dozens of people injured. when the tornado rolls through, cars were blown off of the road he roadway entirely. windshields smashed in. downed power lines uprooted trees. that's an elementary school in the distance the windows blown out because of the force of the storm. right now police dogs are conducting a search in the fields behind me looking for the ten unaccounted adults. right now there's no confirmed fatalities. dozens of people hurt and many still missing right here in the town of van. back to you, natalie. >> jeff smith from our nbc station out of dallas. thanks so much jeff. the remnants of ana are

causing beach erosion and dangerous rip tides along the carolina coast. the storm brought wet and windy conditions from north and south carolina. it came ashore near myrtle beach, south carolina with winds gusting up to 60 miles an hour. it is expected to move over eastern north carolina tonight. four suspects in the killing of two mississippi police officers are due in court today. former officer of the year and rookie officer liquori tate were gunned down after a traffic stop on saturday night. two of the suspects a man and a woman, are charged with catch capital murder. on mother's day officer tate's mom says the hurt is unbearable but she forgives the her son's killer. four self-driving cars have been involved in accidents since september. three google cars and one operated by delphi auto parts. people must sit behind the wheel but two crashes took place while the car's sensors and computers

were in control. google and delphi said the accidents were minor and that their cars were not at fault. on thursday in a report on premature babies we stated that there are 18,000 premature births in the u.s. each year. well the march of dimes asked us to clarify. that number only refers to extremely premature babies. those born at 24 weeks or less. overalthough it says there are 450,000 premature births in the u.s. each year making it the leading cause of newborn deaths in the u.s. and take a look at this little girl did she surprise her daddy or did daddy surprise her little princess. the video going viral shows a girl named zoey using her tiny fishing poll to reel in a giant catch. that bass there looks even bigger than she is. some skeptical viewers wonder if the dad didn't catch the fish and put it on the hook. plus the fifteen no, ma'am of the fishing pole. even so we have a nice bass out

room temperature is going to be out in the north bay. temp stay steady all week. we get showers thursday and friday. widespread we're also expecting activity in the east bay valleys. mid 60s for much of the week. >> and that's your latest weather. savannah? >> all right, al. thank you so much. we are taking a closer look this morning at what's being called a shocking new study by nyu medical center. it was published in the journal childhood obesity. here's what it found. when parents were asked if their preschooler were too thin too heavy, or just about the right weight nearly all of the parents of overweight kids said their kid was just right. experts are now calling this the goldilocks syndrome. dr. natalie azar is a contributor. what parent would call their own child fat or obese? maybe they don't want to use

those words. >> that's exactly right. that was one explanation for it. the issue why is it so important? it's because parents have the idea kids will outgrow obesity and maybe that's why they're more reluctant to acknowledge it. we know more importantly that these habits that children learn start very young. so in the preschool age is when these healthy behaviors are going to start taking form. that's why this time period is so essentially important. >> one of the things the study found is when parents were assessing where their child fit in on this weight scale, they often were comparing to other children. they thought my kid looks like the other kids so that's why my kid is just right. >> exactly. and it has a name. it's called the social comparison theory. they invoke that as to one reason why this happens. rather than parents looking at growth charts saying my child is in the obese range. they say he or she looks the same as the kids in their school so therefore they must be doing okay. >> so what are parents supposed

to do? as a parent myself the last thing i want to do is put my child on a diet and give my child all those hangups for the rest of her life. >> well one important thing to come out of this study is really that it's communication with the pediatricians that's so important. it's a little bit -- not so much on indictment on the medical community, but clearly there's been a lack of communication between the doctors and the parents together to form sort of a uniform task force, if you will. because parents need to feel empowered. and they have to say, listen i can't ignore the facts anymore. it appears my child is in this range. we have to start intervening early because as we said before these behaviors are set very early in life. >> it's a matter of encouraging healthy eating. >> and they model and the parents are the most important factor in what behaviors a child will eventually have. >> always a good reminder. thank you so much. >> thanks. coming up next music

good morning, everyone. it is 8:56. i'm scott mcgrew. tesla is expanding its presence in michigan. the "detroit free press" reports tesla has acquired a michigan auto supplier. the deal provides a new in road in michigan where tesla's not allowed to sell cars because it doesn't sell to dealerships. a new a.p. report finds four

of google's nearly 50 self-driving cars have gotten into accidents since last september. that's when the cars were first allowed on california roads. but the report says two of those accidents actually occurred when the robot part was turned off and it was being driven by a human. on the other two, google says the cars were not at fault. we'll have more local news in a half-hour.

to draft all the to do lists. we do more of the hr when it comes to taking care of the household and the home to help manage the kids and make sure they're lined up for all the things they're supposed to be doing. not to say obviously that there aren't dads who don't contribute equally. and as the author says in the article, you can't make sweeping generalizations here. >> no. >> however, the point is, she says, that women tend to have the -- are hard wired more to worry about their kids. what do you guys think? >> i think debra and i switch off on the scheduling and things like that. we kind of try to pick up the slack with each other. but when it comes to, i think, the worrying about safety. yesterday nick wanted to walk to church for the first time by himself. and debra didn't want him to do it. i said got to let him do it. it's not that far. i said here's what we'll do. i told him what route to take. and i gave him about a five minute head start and then i followed him on my bike back

policy and say there are fewer boots on the ground so that's better. but we're still killing people from the skies and there are american people who are doing it. and as ethan's character shows, that torments them. >> right. i was drawn to this new schizophrenia of this new warfare where ethan's character will you know, for 12 hours a day he'll fight the taliban with a remote control. and then he'll go home to his wife and kids. what does that do to the psyche of a soldier? >> and what role they have with the rest of the military. one drone pilot was awarded the medal of honor but it was rescinded because of the outcry in the middle east. they're making mortal decision bus they're not in harm's way themselves. and it creates an interesting feeling in the pilots and the rest of the community. >> how do you research a role like that? did you get to know drone pilots and see what they've been through? >> well, just a lot of literature about it and andrew's script is meticulously well written.

taking a look at the headlines, a new stew finds most parents of obese children don't even realize their kids from a problem. parents were asked whether they consider their child to be overmight, underweight, or just about the right weight. it's called goldilocks syndrome because to the parent the weight seems just right. parents often make the mistake of comparing their kids to young peers who may also be too heavy. the effects of a concussion may cause academic struggles for some students. researchers followed about 350 children from kindergarten on through 12th grade who suffered a concussion. 88% of symptomatic students are

troubles. 77% said they spent more time on homework and had difficulty taking notes and studying. the students reported that math was the most troublesome subject. a more active daily commute could help you lose weight. british researchers followed up with residents who parked their car and opted to walk, bike, or take public transportation to work. the link was to a weight loss of more than two pounds. even more for longer commutes. but switching to a car was associated to a two pound weight gain. you could be passing up hundreds of dollars each year if you don't have a high yield checking account. the average checking accounts yields .06% interest rate. the study found some that paid 2% interest or more. 2% on a $25,000 balance earns you about $500 a year.
