your microclimate in moments and a couple notes, key and crash for your tri-valley artery, coming up. a have good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. >> breaking news. overnight in the south bay, the wreckage simply horrific. >> you're looking at what is left of a car after it flipped several times over. >> this appeared overnight in gilroy on leavesly road not far from the outlet. bob redell has been out there. speed appears to have played a role. >> reporter: the posted speed limit is 50 miles an hour, once you get to this bend, it drops to 40. chp does not believe initially that the driver was abiding by that speed limit t happened around 11:00 last night.

that driver of the black ford mistake, once it hit the curve, it kept going straight, went off the road, flipped over and landed in a dry creek bed. in that car was the driver and all four of his attention, three women and another man died in that accident. as you see the wreckage being pulled out by the wrecker earlier this morning, you see how devastating that crash was. the black ford mustang was crushed. it's no surprise it was so hard for anyone to survive that accident. remarkably the driver did survive, badly hurt, major injuries, but is expected to survive. they also will be testing his blood. there's no indication whether he was drinking. there are also tire marks at the side of the accident. chp will be trying to figure out whether those were caused by skidding or whether the driver tried to apply brakes before going off the road four of them

were wearing the seat belt, there is one passenger in the back who was not buckled in as is required by law. the chp does know who these people earp, but they told us earlier this morning they had not yesterday notified their families, only to say they were very local, that they lived somewhere nearby. reporting live in gilroy, rerebell, "today in the bay." now to a developing story at 6:02, federal investigators just arrived on the scene of a deadly train derailment, as rescue crews rush to find anybody who might be trapped. so far six people are not confirmed dead, dozens of others are hurt. >> kris sanchez is tracking the developments. he says he's never seen anything like this. >> and it is a disaster. it appears to be a disaster that was an accident. as you mention ed as of this

morning there is no immediate evidence of foul play nor evidence of terrorism. but that may be little concentration to the families of those six people killed in the crash. the latest person who died this morning died of massive chest trauma. >> -- in critical condition. three went to the operating room last night immediately. more than 100 other people were treated for broken bones and some hoar minor injuries. doctors said many were not even from philadelphia. some were from as star away as india and albania. in the meantime we're getting our first daytime look at the scene where investigators aren't just looking at clues, they are checking to make sure there aren't more victims trapped in that wreckage. the train was headed from twarkt d.c. to new york when all seven cars flew off the tracks in philadelphia. some passengers say they felt something was going wrong as that train entered that curve. >> and then we just rolled and rolled, and next thing i knew we

were pushing -- there were people screaming and bleeding. >> it is an absolute disastrous mess. never seen anything like this in my life. >> in this passenger video, can you see people trying to help each other even as others tried to crawl to saved. emergency workers are trying to make sure all the passengers are accounted for. though there's a manifest when we fly, things are looser when we travel by rail. this appears to be a tragic accident, no evidence of foul play nor terrorism. >> thank you very much. at 6:04, we will have more on this 24 dovering story, include a live report from the crash site at 6:30 also developic, a local connection to an international disaster. two u.s. helicopters scouring the hillsides looking for a california-based marine

helicopters that's been missing since yesterday. aboard, six marines and two nepalese service members. it had been delivering aid to one of the villages hardist hit by yesterday's 7.3 magnitude earthquake. officials say there was no distress call and the marines have several pieces of emergency equipment, like a satellite phone and gps device. but they say rugged terrain in that area could make it hard for the marine toss actually use the devices. the helicopters is based in camp pendleton, and at least one of the marines is stationed there. many people spend the night outside for fear of aftershocks. as soon as the sun came up, crews went to work at digging in the rubble. 65 people so far have died in yesterday ace quake. more than 8,000 died in last month's earthquake. all of the seismic activity has many of us here at home asking if we're ready for the jection big earthquake.

vaccinate their child or remove them from public schools. the rally gets under way at 10:30 this morning. there is certainly a big concern for thousands of parents in the south bay this morning. vaccines their children received may not be protecting them. the problem -- a bad refrigerator. a refrigerator he goss gatt toss pediatric center was keeping the vaccines a couple degrees too cold. since the discovery two months ago, the foundation says it's been putting together an action plan for each of the 4300 children affected. here are the vaccines possibly compromised -- a long list there. the medical foundation says it's providing all options to parents, including another vaccination free of charge. we now how much kids like shots. >> you have to kind of persuade them to go along with it, but it

can be done. sometime to check the microclimate forecast. because of sunrise from san francisco. we talk, laura about preparedness, keeping an umbrella in the trunk. >> there you go. christina has a look at our forecast for this morning. >> good morning, we are counting on some drized and light showers as of this afternoon. temperatures mostly in the 40s and 50s. good morning to you, bay area. we need this rain. it's a welcome sign, especially when it comes to the elevated fire danger that we usually have in the month of may. and also it's not unusual for us to be in the 90s in may. we have not even been close to that. so far this month it's been very mild out there. that will continue as we head throughout the day today. 52 degrees in san carlos, starting at 512 in oakland. 48 degrees, meanwhile, a chilly start in san jose, and 46 down in san martin. as we get is a into your afternoon, this is what you can expect.

that cloudy start will stay. we'll keep the clouds in the mix. then between noon and 3:00 p.m., that drizzle and light activity will start across the bay area with the heaviest rainfall for today on the way to the immediate coast and our higher elevations. then by tomorrow, widespread activity, everybody getting some showers, that means a free car wash for you. 62 degrees, it shows you that on the peninsula. 63 degrees, a touch warmer for today out there at noon. in the north bay, you'll round out the day, 67 degrees in wine country, 68 for the peninsula is the high, and 63 is the high for the east bay today. so let me give you a little idea, a snapshot of what to expect as we head throughout the next 48 hours, scattered afternoon showers, mainly in the south bay, high elevations, the north bay high elevations and coast for today. thursday, the heaviest activity will be in the south bay and on the peninsula for the morning hours. then by the afternoon we're expecting that hapeavy stuff to

move in. we're tracking another risk for thunderstorms. we just saw this last week. the chance continues, as we head throughout this week, especially late thursday into early friday morning. hail possible, also gusty winds to 50 miles per hour, so we're going to show you the timing, tell you how much we're expecting where you live in the next report. right now, it's a wednesday, and it looks like it's getting busy, mike. >> it is, it is. a look out to the roadways. we have a good update that crash now moved to the right-hand shoulder, still a distraction, but no additional slowing should build, and that's great stuff here. the south bay -- southbound 101 just off highway -- the crash there also moved to the shoulder, and the commute northbound, look at that. just a slight build, as we move north to the san mateo bridge.

western-facing slopes surrounding san jose. keep that in mind, you probably want that umbrella handy. 1:00 p.m., that heavier activity, and some thunderstorms as well. those thunderstorms can dump rain if we get any strong cells, we'll be tracking that for you all day long tomorrow. taking you into friday at 7:00 a.m., just lingers spotty activity. and then we're going to clear you out just in time for your outdoor plans on saturday afternoon. how much rain? this is what we are expecting. just under 0.2 of an inch in sanity rosa, same for napa, under 0.3 in the south bay. more generis towels will be coming in from the south. the storm has an unusual track, it would hit the south harder than the north bay. not a classic cold front. courtesy of the rainfall, watch what happens to your pollen levels. people have been asking me quite consistently when will these levels drop off?

the good news is we drop from the high to moderate range. we're going to stay in moderate through the weekend, not expecting the high pollen levels until next week, so that's some good news. a little relief from you if you suffer from the allergies of the season. sunday will be your better day to do so. lots of sunshine on sunday, and 69 degrees for the tri-valley. so overall we are looking good. you can drive with your windows down later on today. you don't have to worry about that pollen later on, but it has been pretty tough. >> it has been. with the window down you have to work about the one arm tanner than the other, but we deal with it. there's no surprise that the metering lights are on, and we'll show you the approach on the maps nothing unusual about the a smooth drive for the north bay. look at that.

last night? it happened around 9:30 last night, headed from washington, d.c. to new york city. it had just stopped in downtown philadelphia, was heading onto new york people who were on the train say it started shaking violently and then started to roll. and then it came to an abrupt stop, and people realized they were in a lot more serious trouble than they thought they were. we learned this morning that a sixth person has now died five people in critical condition from this incident and dozens and dozens more were treat

head headed so the weather story of the day, that cloudy start will make way to drizzle. light afternoon showers, you can probably get by without using your windshield wipers this morning except for at the immediate coast, and then you might have them on by this evening. the best bet looks like the south bay mountains as well as the north bay and immediate coastline later on today. temperatures at lunchtime, shows you will be on the cool side, so you'll need your jacket just about all day long. at noon 59 degrees, on the east shores as you break for lunch, 62 degrees in the tri-valley, and we'll round out the day in the upper 60s a couple mid 60s out there as well, and temperatures at the coast will warrant a jacket. just 61 on the way to san francisco, weather headlines tell the story for the next few days. drizzle and light showers, turning over to widespread rainfall. again as we get into this weekend, the unsettled weather will continue, even expecting

some thunderstorms. i'm going to dive into that, coming up we'll take a deeper dive, show you where we have the best bet for those thunderstorms. right now, if you've got to get out that front door, the man who knows what could sloe you down, mike inouye. >> one thing for sure you'll slow down at the bay bridge toll plaza. we are looking at lighter than normal value, all we look over at the toll plaza, left approach has been lighter than the rest. we'll show you the approach. the east shore freeway, even though the bay -- the east shore freeway slows. maybe some debris right around university for west 80, that is gumming things up. that is your slowest spot really for the bay as we zoom out, we're showing you no major issues other than that, eastbound highway 4, and reports that they are blocking a couple lanes because of a crash there,

a look at the tri-valley, nothing dramatic. the south bay northbound 101 and 87 slowing towards san jose, a typical pattern. we'll look at palo alto, and a note, folks for highway 1 just north of half moon bay, an arier crash, so they've had to close highway 1 right at the scene, but i believe you can get by in the residential area. >> so it could be live wires. >> there could be live wires. avoid the area and i'll let you know if you have to make a dramatic work-around right now it's an area of course starved for new housing inventory. hunters point with condos up to $700,000, but there are serious questions about -- is it safe? let vicky nguyen has more. >> good morning.

to and to perform radiation experiments on animals. now we've uncovered new e-mails from state regulators in an unprecedented move, the state health department reversed its decision to release 22 old buildings at hunter's point. at first the state thought the radiation had been properly tested for and cleaned up. new data shows those tests may not have been done correctly, and the state can't be sure that land is scape. we first told you about tetratech, that has the contract to clean up radiation, your tax dollars. whistle-blowers told us the company cut corners for safety for profits. now the company had no comment. the navy says there is no radiological contamination in the buildings that pose an unacceptable risk. see for yourself, our entire report is online right now at nbcbayarea.com under the

new this morning, the latest recall involves more than 600,000 cars in the united states, all maid by toyota and nissan. ed air bags are used by a large range of automaker.

they can deploy abnormally or ruptures. the inflator recall impacted 17 million vehicles in the u.s. alone. crews scouring the indians ocean for any sign of the malaysia airlines jet made an undiscovered shipwreck. they sent out an unmanned subthis found a previously uncharted shipwreck. archaeologists are trying to figure out how and when it got there. the u.s. navy is proposes doubling the maternity leave. the proposal would require legislative approval. if congress agrees to it, the leave would ultimately be extended to members of all military branching. there are currently more than 200,000 active-duty women in the

we begin with an update to breaking news. the wreckage is horrific.

this is what is left of a car after it flipped and rolled down an embankment, killing four people inside an area you've probably driven through, which is now a grisly scene. it happened in gilroy not far from the shopping outlets. bob redell has been out there all morning long. bob, speed seems to be the key elements here. >> reporter: according to the chp, the post the speed limit along the road is 50 miles per hour. once you hit that bend, it drops to 40 miles an hour. chp not exactly sure how fast the driver of this black ford mistake was traveling, just that they do not believe he was obeying the speed limit. about a couple hours ago, you can see -- and when you look at the wreckage, you can see why it was so hard to survive that crash. this happened just before 11:00 last night. the drive hit the curb, kept going straight, overturned and landed in a 20-foot driedout

building, a lot of people likely out exercising. >> you never know. not just because maybe -- some rain coming down, but later this afternoon -- >> right now you're a-okay. that's one of the questions i always get -- will i be able to take my bike ride or run or hike later on today? >> i think you'll be okay. we're not expecting the heavy stuff until tomorrow. as of right now, you can definitely see the clouds are thickening up already. we're going to get some shower activity. not everybody, not that widespread activity until tomorrow. we're in the mid 50s just about everywhere else. on our way to the low 60s. 58 in the tri-valley, same for the peninsula, about 67 degrees right here in beautiful san jose. so let's getting right to it. we do have a couple interesting component associated with this storm system. right now you can see that area of low pressure is actually a pretty good-looking storm for

this time of year, packing a lot of moisture with it. what's so interesting is it will tap into this steady plume of moisture here, the tropical moisture that extends all the way from the hawaiian islands. so that's pretty interesting for us to see this time of year. we typically cut that off as we head through early april. not this years, my friend. some showers rolling to the north bay at that point. that's when the light stuff will start to get going. not expecting much more today until we get into tomorrow. mostly between tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon, showers on the way, some embedded thunderstorms, you can clearly see that here. the red, the orange embedded with that green, those are expected thunderstorms, especially through the east bay hills, the santa cruz mountains and higher elevations of the north bay. then into your friday morning you'll notice some lingering activity. that will continue for the first

part of saturday and will clear you out just in time for the all-important weekend. first, though, we want to show you how much rain we're expecting just where you live. just under 0.3 of an inch, a quarter of an inch on the way to livermore. higher totals expected, north of sonoma county, which is great news when it comes to our drew situation. any rain we receive at this point is a bonus. after all, our rainy season that is come to a close. as we get into the next couple days, saturday into sunday temperatures stay nice and steady. cooler, with a few lingers showers on saturday. then on sunday, great-looking day, room temperature readings in the south bay, 66 and 70 degrees in the north bay on sunday. what a fantastic weekend to get up to wine country. pollen -- i just made a weird

sound with my voice in my mike. sorry about that, that's right in you're ear. >> that's all right. in my head i was going, ding ding ding, but it's fine. over here, westbound 80, this is much more smoothly. this is the left of the crash with the lanes just long enough to kick off from golden gate field to the top of your screen. that's the highlight for the east shore freeway, gumming up right there out of richmond. this is a pleasant flow of traffic. eastbound 4 coming occupy hercules, that's where there's that sig alert. that means a big problem for a while, over half an hour, and that's what they expect, but over here, midpoint we're not looking lookic a bad commute. as we move the map down, into the tri-valley, no big concern and no big flow of traffic. that's a lighter volume there. there was debris reported around

the devices. the helicopters based out of the camp pendleton in san diego, and at least one of the marines is state stationed there as well. meantime rescue crews are searching for survivors for the earthquake itself. many folks spent the night outside for fear of more aftershocks. as soon as the sun came up, crews went to work digging out the rubble. more than 8,000 died in last month's earthquake. if we're ready for the next big earthquake. today pg & e is trying to find out. they're simulating an earthquake as part of a two-day exercise to test the company's emergency preparedness and response plans. it gets under way at 10:30 morning in san francisco happening today east bay parents are protesting the highly controversy krall mandatory vaccination bill.

they are rallies outside the oakland office of the -- right now they can exempt for religious or personal reasons. this bill would change that. the rally gets under way at 10:30 this morning. big concern for thousands of parents this morning. vaccines their children received may not be protecting them from disease. the problem -- a refrigerator, a refrigerator at pallet alternate medical foundation's los gatos pediatric center was keeping vaccines a couple degrees too cold. doctors say this could possibly make the vaccines less effective. the foundation says it's been putting together an action plan for each of the 4300 children affected. here are the vaccines possibly compromised help cites a and b, meningitis, hpc, tie found, flu and tb. the medical foundation says it's providing all options to
