u.s. marine chopper missing for three days has been found in pieces in the mountains of nepal. what can you tell us? >> just moments ago in kathmandu lieutenant marine corps general john wiszler declared it is unlikely there were survivors in the helicopter crash and all eight passengers on board were killed. the u.s. military is no longer calling this a search and rescue operation but a recovery operation. the helicopter on tuesday night slammed into the side of a mountain at 11,000 feet. it took more than three days of searching to find that helicopter in this wreckage. with the six u.s. marines and two soldiers that were on board. the recovery operation, however, has been suspended until tomorrow because of the altitude

at 11,000 feet there are violent thunderstorms and rain in the area which endangered the rescue crews. that helicopter, those six marines were carrying relief goods to those earthquake victims in that region there at the foothills of the hemimalayas. >> thank you very much. in other news investigators could interview the engineer from the amtrak accident that killed eight people and injured more than 200 others. the investigation now focusing on the train's sudden acceleration in its final minute. tom costello is in philadelphia. what is the latest? >> reporter: a couple of key developments. we know there was an older automatic braking system in place for the southbound tracks but not the northbound tracks. this automatic braking system might have prevented the accident. police have a search warrant for

brandon bostian's cell phone records. he was active complaining about safety lapses. this morning the ntsb says it is eager to talk to engineer brandon bostian. the first lawsuit against amtrak alleges gross reckless conduct filed by an injured offduty employee who claims he was violently hurled inside the rail car. the train was accelerating for a final minute before derailment, 43 seconds before the crash, 80 miles per hour. 31 seconds before the crash, 90. 16 seconds before the crash more than 100 miles per hour. >> i don't think any common sense rational person would think it was okay to travel at that level of speed. >> reporter: the question, did

engineer bostian notice he was speeding. his attorney insists he turned the cell phone off and put it in his bag but doesn't remember the accident. an investigation that bostian warned about railroad safety saying the possibility of human error is frightening. in a statement amtrak ceo says amtrak takes full responsibility and deeply apologizes for our role in this tragic event. what is amtrak's policy about distractions in the cab? >> we try to minimize distractions. they are not allowed to have cell phones. they can't use them. >> reporter: the ntsb is hoping to interview survivors about where they sat on the train and how they managed to escape. >> we want to find out where they were seated and their injury patterns so that we can start correlating their seating

with the injury siesnjuries. >> reporter: meanwhile, the ntsb says positive train control, this new technology would have prevented this accident. the trouble is because of the slow down in getting an upgrade on the radio frequencies for the track it hadn't been in place yet and should be in place by the end of the year. >> positive control was not yet activated in the area is there anything else in the engine that would alert the engineer to the fact that he or she is going too fast? >> reporter: i have seen engineers when they sit there as they accelerate there is an automatic warning system checking to make sure that the engineer is still there and alive and doesn't have a medical issue. he has to push a button. it increases in frequency as the speed increases. he should have had alarms and warning bells going off and should have been hitting the button.

>> a lot of people are asking about the experience level that is required for an engineer to travel a certain route. what do we know about what amtrak requires in that area? >> you get three months of training to become an engineer and then two years on the job training. engineers are certified for their route. he should have known his route very well. in other words, he can't take an engineer from buffalo and put him on this route as a subunless he knew the route. >> real quickly, that question you raised, what lessons from this crash in terms of where you are on a train and what impact it has on your ability to survive a crash? >> it's a little bit the luck of the draw because most crashes, of course, either occur if you are going and hit something or if something hits you from the rear. because of that experts say the best course is usually to pick a middle car and pick an aisle seat as opposed to a window

>> well, i wouldn't say blew it, but on tuesday he was asked a question would you have done something different and he said yes. wednesday he said yes there were mistakes. you don't go to war without the right intel. this is the kind of question where people like you and people who are political junkies need to hear the words would not have gone in. and so the good news for him is he has had a bad week and he has 36 more weeks until we start voting in iowa and 250 days. he is a smart guy and lessons learned, say it with clarity. if you need to clean it up, clean it up fast. >> part of his argument to republican primary voters is that he is a competent candidate. this is the single most predictable question he could have gotten. were you surprised that he struggled with it? that it took him four days to

with his own brother. >> what he ought to do is realize and i think he does, he is his own man. say what you believe. i think this is more the mistake i think was made here was one of thinking that when asked would you have made a different decision and he says yes that that was the answer. and then when he says you have to go in only on the basis of the best intelligence and that wasn't done here, mistakes were made with that, that people would draw inference that he would not have gone in. would you have gone in if you knew what you know now? you need to have the answer would not have gone in and he gave it. issue over. we'll see if the issue is repeated again. something tells me he is going to recognize that little different than when he last ran for office and the timeframe for which you need to clarify and clean up.

owned by a corporate executive and his wife who is said to be active in fund raising. more problems for amtrak thursday. this time in wisconsin. a train traveling to milwaukee burst into flames. one passenger said she felt the train jolt and she smelled smoke. all passengers were safely evacuated. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. president obama says the u.s. would use military force if necessary to defend its arab allies. the president and gulf leaders held wide ranging talks at camp david. president obama says they discussed growing tensions with iran, the situation in yemen, and countering violent extremism. abc news anchor george stephanopoulos is apologizing and pulling out of his role in a planned presidential debate for not disclosing $75,000 in donations he made to the clinton family foundation between the 2012 and 2014 years. stephanopoulos was once a top aide to president bill clinton.

the revelations come after the interview with the author of "clinton cash." abc is supporting stephanopoulos saying, quote, he has admitted to an honest mistake and apologized for that admission. we stand behind him. now to some dramatic video showing a police officer in savannah, georgia, being dragged by a suspect's car. this happened in a gas station parking lot. the officer spotted the driver as a possible suspect in a fake check cashing case. so the officer asked the driver to take the keys out of the ignition. however, the driver refuses as you saw there just drove off dragging the officer with him. the officer wasn't seriously hurt. meanwhile the 23-year-old suspect turned himself into police. he's now charged with aggravated assault of a police officer. iconic irish rock band u2 opened its new world tour in vancouver, british columbia in a

the 89-year-old blues icon died overnight at his home in las vegas. here's a look outside his blues club in new york city where he performed a lot of times. nbc's lester holt takes a look back at an amazing career. good morning. >> reporter: and he was amazing. b.b. king inspired fans, influenced countless musicians. keith richards and others to name a few. the music world saying good-bye to the undisputed king of blues. his nimble fingers on the guitar are what he called an extension of his voice with a unique and unmistakable style, b.b. king helped push blues into the mainstream. the undisputed king of blues was born riley b. king on september 16th, 1925 on a plantation in mississippi. he sang and played gospel music at church and played for dimes on street corners. in 1947 he hitchhiked to memphis where he appeared on the radio and soon became a fixture on

the city's legendary biel street. he once told johnny carson where b.b. came from. >> i never asked what b.b. stands for. >> it stands for blues boy. i was a music jockey and they called me the beale street blues boy. so it was just an abbreviated to b.b. >> reporter: b.b. had his first number one record. it came in 1951. "3:00 blues." and more chart toppers would follow. almost two decades later, he found fame as a crossover artist opening for the rolling stones and later recording with u2. >> he's great in every way. just the girth of the man is great. the only person that doesn't think b.b. is great is probably b.b. >> reporter: king referred to his black guitar as lucille. >> it's like a good friend. it's just there with you. >> reporter: and what he could do with lucille.

created blues greats. how much of an influence has he had on your career and life? >> not my life. every guitar player i know. those shoes will never be filled. >> reporter: b.b. king earned 15 grammys, was a member of the rock and roll hall of fame, was awarded the presidential medal of freedom by george w. bush and even sang with president obama at the white house. >> people call me king of the blues. i've heard it many, many times. do you think i think that? no, i do not. i think it's a lot of people can do exactly what i do. and a lot of them can do it better. they're just not me. >> reporter: b.b. king suffered from diabetes and spent much of this last year in hospice care. but up until then, he never slowed down performing around 100 shows a year after he turned 80.

derailment. >> so many questions. we're now hearing from friends of the engineer for the first time. stephanie gosk has that story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. so much of the attention has been on brandon bostian. we know he's been an engineer for more than four years. a conductor before that. people who know him say he is fascinated by training and this is a job he loves. and now friends are coming out in support of him online. phi hours after the deadly crash, the engineer of amtrak 188 changed his profile picture to black. brandon bostian hasn't posted since, but comments from friends and family are flooding in. stay strong. supporting you, brandon. you're in my thoughts brandon. i know how dedicated you are to your job. there is a common thread. bostian loves train. ryan smith met him at the university of missouri where they belonged to the same

church. >> i was shocked considering what kind of person he is. he wasn't just doing this as a job, like yeah i got to pay the bills so i'm going to take this job. it was like this is what i love to do. >> reporter: the 32-year-old engineer grew up in memphis. he wrote transportation stories for the local people. as a college student he worked as a cashier for target. his first job with amtrak was in san francisco working on the commuter line cal train. bostian was promoted to engineer in 2010. to be promoted he would have had to pass a course like the one offered at modoc railroad academy. candidates have to be licensed conductors and pass a truck test. hours are spent in a simulator like this one which demonstrate the importance of maintaining safe speed. >> if we were to take this curve at 30 miles an hour even at 30 miles an hour it would roll the train over.

>> reporter: modoc's president believes the job is so demanding there should always be more than one engineer driving the train. >> we're just tired. that's what they're not saying. these guys are exhausted. they're overworked and the job is too much for one guy. >> reporter: bostian has agreed to an interview with the ntsb. among the topics will be his physical state at the moment of the crash. but it won't be the only fact that they're considering. back to you. >> just the perspective to get. thank you very much. on a much different story, we've got new developments this morning on that international incident that was triggered by johnny depp and his dogs. after being threatened with euthanasia in australia those dogs are back on a plane to the united states. here's nbc's joe fryer. >> reporter: australian tv reports that the dogs have left australia. a convoy carrying johnny depp's father-in-law and reportedly the yorkshire terriers was just seen arriving at the airport. that plane has now taken off.

savannah. it's national bike to work today. i've spent a lot of time on a bike. it's a charity bike ride from boston to here in the big apple. training for the tour de red nose has involved riding for 30 to 40 miles a day three days a week for eight weeks now, and thanks to about ten tubes of icy hot, i'm finally ready. >> two wheels four states and 230 miles. in just 48 hours i began one of the most physically grueling challenges i've ever tackled, biking from boston's famous fenway park to our very own "today" show plaza in new york city. >> why am i doing this? seriously, why am i doing this? to raise money for america's first ever red nose day. >> let's go. let's go. let's go. >> in two months i've gone from a weekend warrior to a road

taking a look at the headlines. the engineer at the controls of that amtrak train that derailed in philadelphia killing eight people has agreed to talk to ntsb investigators. officials said thursday that in the last minute or so before the derailment the train sped up from 70 miles per hour to 100 where the maximum speed is supposed to be 50. women who become single mothers before the age of 50 may have an increased risk of poor health later in life. while any period of single motherhood for more than eight years were especially vulnerable to disabilities or disease. financial struggles or a lack of social support could be to blame.
