"today in the bay" kris sanchez with why california specifically may scrub your favorite products, kris. >> microbeads are tiny bits of plastic that promise to slough away the dry skin, pearly whites whiter burks they do have to go somewhere. they wash down the drain. then those tiny bits of plastic go in the waterways. the santician plants are not designed to sift them out so they go into the bay, the ocean, local rivers where they can pollute the waters. when they break down they can become toxic to wildlife. in some cases the fish mistake it for food and they eat it, we eat them, you see where this is going. today lawmakers will vote on assembly bill 888 which is the strict esteban so far on microbeads in the nation which calls for zero microbeads by january 1st, 2020. as of right now there is no exemption for biodegradable
5:07 am
plastics in the california ban. cosmetics and chemical companies insist the microbeads are safe but still the makers of crest toothpaste are voluntarily phasing out the microbeads out of their products. crest says they will be out by march of next year. the company position is that while the microbeads are considered safe by the food and drug administration they really go by what the consumers want. and the consumers want an alternative to those plastics. johnson and johnson announced a similar move. they are push for biodegradable plastic which other states have. environmentalists say there are natural alternatives that don't end up in the waterways. when i've been to the store, apricot, sugary scrubs. >> you can make your own with salt or sugar or something like that. >> maybe i've seen them, too, by the way. >> what that. >> you're glowing, sam. >> a couple times a week, i
