our unusual pattern continues. much cooler than average than we bring on more may rain. details in just a few minutes. >> we'll see how that weather is affecting your drive. also the crews are on the move. show you the slowing though on the peninsula. tuesday morning. live look outside right now. downtown san jose. may 19th. you are watching "today in the bay." >> "today in the bay" begins with breaking news. >> we do have an update to that breaking news we're following in san jose. a fire at a san jose auto detailer now under control but there's a new worry for firefighters. >> this morning we have team coverage of the story we're going to begin right now with bob redell live in san jose. toxic chemicals inside the business might have contaminated water used to douse the flames. >> the san jose dire r fire department corn firmed the runoff water is contaminated. we're not sure if this part was contaminated because they reopened this to the public. so we're not sure if they are
5:01 am
not as concerned about it. they tested the runoff closer to the auto detailing business that caught here at reynolds circlend it's definitely caustic and one fire captain with san jose fire department described it as being green, foamy, and nasty. there was a placard on the building ibd indicating hazard douse teals on fire i side when they arrived around 12:30 this morning. we're not sure what but believe these are the chind of chemicals used in metal evening or metal plating. the fire department still working on a plan how to remove these caustic chemicals from the water. whether that would be a removal or they're going to neutralize that. they don't know. hope to have a better idea once the sun comes up. >> the most common choice for acids and bases is to dilute them with more water until the ph is down to normal. but because this is more of a chemical soup, other chemicals in there, we're not comfortable doing that yet. >> reporter: there were 100 firefighters offen the scene. 35 of them had to be decontaminated after they finished fighting this fire.
5:02 am
everyone is fine according to the fire department. fire department -- fire started in this business around 12:30 this morning. large two-story l-shaped concrete structure. the fire was so big it was already perjuring through the roof when the fire department arrived. they immediately went on the defensiv defensive. had to call for fourth alarm. had it under control in 1:15. they are the still trying to figure of it the cause. no injuries no, evacuations. they have a perimeter set up. ten blocks but within the past half hour they squeezed that perimeter to let traffic go through. obviously they're letting us stand here right next to the runoff. i don't smell anything. have to assume they're at least trying to keep everyone safe. my presumption is the runoff that's closer to the scene is the water that they're having an issue with. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. the good news is that. wind doesn't seem to be a factor this morning. let's check now with christina loren. >> good morning to you. the good news is the fire itself
5:03 am
is contained. i think probably part of the reason why is because the wind is so calm out there and our humidity this morning is at 80%. so that is something that always helps out when it comes to these fires. and our local heroes got out there quickly. we salute you guys for that. thank you for keeping us safe. right now humidity is at 80%. i can tell you this will likely be a distraction for you if you're coming up northbound 101. it does look like they still have quite a few units on scene. we're going to get the details with mike inouye also covering this closely this morning. good morning, mike. >> good morning, christina. as we look over to the south bay in general. the freeways are moving smoothly. typical overnight road crews atds christina pointed out. the area with the fire. christina drove through this morning and saw a lot of flashing lights. saw behind bob, not a lot of activity there now but still some flashing lights group might see that. they're allowing traffic through the area now but on the immediate premises that is a problem. reynolds circle is the focus.

natural habitat after roaming a quaint neighborhood downtown. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in san mateo with why everyone is happy with how this story ended. kris? >> good morning to you as you mentioned that mountain lion is back in its natural habitat near crystal springs reservoir. everybody slept a little bit better last night. but take a look at the size of this guy. 90 pounds of mountain lion sleeping in the back of a california official wildlife truck after quite a search through people's back yards in the neighborhood. the 90-pound cougar was spotted this time yesterday morning in a neighborhood near downtown and several other times during the day until rangers and police zeroed in around 5:00 last night. here's where the story is different this time. i've been out here a number of times and often when mountain lions make it into neighborhoods rangers have to shoot and kill because it's just not safe to tranquilize it. this time they were able to corner it and hit it with two
5:06 am
tranquilizer darts. >> it ran around a little bit and the drugs take effect. it's just like any narcotic. it puts you right to sleep. >> good. >> reporter: after the mountain lion slept off those sedatives it was released back into the natural habitat near crystal springs reservoir. while all of this was happening though you can imagine that people were feeling very apprehensive, very nervous. one person did fire off a gun, a warning shot into the ground, so no danger to people but that is something illegal within the city limits. so that case will be forwarded to the district attorney's office. but all in all, a different story to a mountain lion sighting ends differently. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all in all, peace nul ending to the tale. lieutenant governor gavin newson will speak today on marijuana policy. the public forum will be held in
