it's 4:30. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia-cannon enjoying a well-deserved long weekend. first, let's check your forecast with meteorologist rob. >> mist in a few spots. 55 in san jose. you've got drizzle around san francisco over towards oakland this morning. as we head towards the afternoon, highs in the mid to upper 60s. near 70 in the north bay. san jose, 68 degrees. mid 70s in reach as we head through the holiday weekend. i'll have a look at that forecast coming up in a few minutes. here's mike. >> playing misty for us again. get you a look at the maps. overall, the bay. we have speed sensors around. they're green. construction typical for south bay spots. we'll zoom in to southbound 880 at stevenson. i passed this. there was a crash over off the roadway. a car had spun around and gone into the bushes.

the big distraction is the flashing lights because chp is still on-scene. there was an earlier car fire, sounds like everything is out. no slowing past the scene. this is also on the shoulder south of that walnut creek interchange. back to you. >> thank you very much. 4:32. this morning people in napa county are looking for damage following an earthquake that rattled the area last night. so far no major damage to report following that magnitude 4.1 quake. the quake definitely shook up nerves though. most people in the area immediately thinking back to the quake last august that struck outside napa. they describe this one as a big jolt. we have a crew on the way to napa county this morning. meteorologist rob has been seeing the seismic activity in our area. what's your radar saying? >> we're looking at where this particular quake happened yesterday evening in relation to the napa quake going back to

august 201. that was a 4.1 earthquake 7:53 yesterday evening. it looks like it's on the northern end of the green valley fault extension. 4.1 on the upper right-hand portion of the screen. on the center of the scene is where the new quake off to the north and east impacting roughly the same area. shifted a little bit further to the north. the most intense shaking up into napa county but a quake of that size, 4.1, being felt doup to the peninsula and east. almost down to sacramento. 4.1 earthquake can be strong enough to knock a couple things off the shelves. with some of those weakened buildings and that earthquake in august it makes sense they will have to inspect some of the earthquake weakened buildings from last augusto see if this 4.1 earthquake may have moved some more material. this earthquake is not something for something larger.

truck veered across the median on interstate 5 in or land. it crashed into a charter bus carrying high school seniors from southern college on a college visit. the chp will release the results into what caused that crash and why that truck veered into that oncoming traffic. the young man accused of stabbing a 9-year-old boy to death is expected to be back in court later today. 18-year-old williams shultz reportedly confessed to stabbing and killing jordan almgren last month as almgren was asleep in his discovery bay house. shultz said he did it saying he just wanted to know what it feels like to take someone's life. in court, two brothers accuse of attacking two men inside a bathroom at levi stadium. a judge will decide if there's enough evidence to try them. prosecutors say the brothers brutally beat two men during a 49ers game in october. the police say the attack was unprovoked. one of the victims still hasn't

fully recovered, if you walk along the bay area coastline right now hard to believe but you won't see any signs of the three dead whales that have washed ashore in the past five weeks. according to the chronicle, city leaders in half-moon bay tied up a 40-foot gray whale to a boat and dragged it back out to sea. that whale appeared on the coastline on monday. earlier in the week crews in pacifica buried two whales in pacifica. residents have been complaining about the stench from the two whales for weeks. sushi lovers, beware, salmonella outbreak may be linked to raw tuna. more than 30 people reported getting sick from eating raw fish. experts say the outbreak spread to eight other states affecting more than 50 people in total. they are sill investigating the source of that outbreak. state lawmakers have blocked a bill that would have stripped key aspects from a law designed to protect children. the 2008 law requires child protection services to release original case records when a

child dies from abuse or neglect. the latest bill would have reversed that. instead providing only short summaries of what the state did to protect vulnerable children. the l.a. times reporting they struck the bill down over concerns that it would do more harm than good. here's something you don't hear every day. more affordable housing coming from san francisco thanks to some folks in tech. mayor ed lee is announcing a new housing project in the mission bay dedicated to homeless veterans and also low-income families. the development will include 100 new units. it is being partially funded by donations from bay area tech mogul, paypal cofounder and sales force ceo mark benoff. that project is expected to break ground next year and open by 2018. are you ready for the hot dogs and hamburgers? memorial day plans starting to shape up? live look at the san mateo bridge which is going to be off limits this holiday weekend. it's going to close starting at 10:00 for maintenance and

rise and shine. not so much shine just yet but that sun will be making its way out here. rob has a look at the weekend forecast for memorial day coming up as we give you a live look at san jose. a sudden change of direction for google's popular maps service and its search results for racist and offensive words.

the problems became public earlier this week when people reported searches using racist words pulled up locations associated with certain african-american communities. google says its maps program uses outside web content and that content is not vetted. google now plans to change the algorithm all together. much to my dismay scrabble is ready to lighten up on the rules the slang words that might have gotten you kicked out of my game will now be fair game. >> are you a purist? >> i am. >> scrabble is adding thousands of new words to dictionary and it won't hurt to know your texting terms. words like obvs, lolz, emoji all legal. laughing out loud and, of course, the smiley fis there. and cazh, how many points for z? >> zh, right? >> cazh for cash as in casual and thx with an" x."

consumer price inflation and fed chair janet yellen speaks about the economy this afternoon. the dow rising a third of a point to 18295 nasdaq up up. the national highway traffic safety administration will extend oversight of gm's decision making on safety issues for another year. this requires gm to continue submitting reports to the agency and meeting with staff so regulators can monitor how the automaker is investigating potential issues with vehicles. last year gm was fined $35 million by the government over its delayed response to the faulty ignition switches and millions of cars. and youtube viewers will soon be able to shop directly from the video ads they're watching as part of google's push to take on amazon and ebay. the financial times reports advertisers will able to display links to products along with price and description from their ads. it will then be sent to the seller's website to complete the purchase. reports say youtube's initial partners will be se forea and house wears website wayfair.com.

back to you. >> one-stop shop at youtube. i'm going to have to get used to that idea. thank you very much. >> i don't even know where to shop anymore. no one likes paying tax owns gasoline but would you rather pay a per mile tax? they are about to test out that program in oregon. starting in july up to 5,000 volunteers can sign up to drive with devices in their cars that monitor how many miles they drive and where they're headed. the volunteers will agree to pay a 1.5 cent per mile on public roads instead of paying the tax that is added when they fill up the pump. they hope it will raise more money to pay for road maintenance because revenue from the gas tax is dwindling. >> all right. 4:48. california water regulators are expected to reach a decision today that could impact many farmers. farmers are waiting for a response regarding their offer to give up a quarter of their water this year in exchange to hope to be spared from deeper

mandatory cutbacks. cutbacks, i should say, this of course all result of our dire drought. >> we just got a notice in the mail about possible mandatory cutbacks. it's just starting to get very serious, very real. >> farmers, residents are rationing, a lot of steeper measures in place here. we did get some rain, however, the last couple days. the last day, rob. what do the totals look like? >> misty skies around the bay air, less than a tenth of an inch for most spots. mountain did pick up a little bit more but this is the time of year to go from all the rain we get to finish off winter into spring you can see now may just under half inch which is what you typically see at san jose and it was last thursday we matched that monthly total. as you get closer to june and july, driest time of year ahead. so not many more rain opportunities likely. but for this morning we have some misty skies once again. san francisco, a little bit of a wet pavement near the golden gate bridge due to the drizzle we had. we will continue to see clouds at times and a chance, highest chance of seeing some brief

light rain around san francisco and the peninsula coastline. and for the afternoon, looks like the hilltops of the north bay, north of napa county and if you're going to head south down towards monterey you will see the clouds building up for the afternoon like we saw yesterday. south and east of morgan hill. you could see a few stray showers there. look at the right side of the screen. sierra, thunderstorms from lake tahoe to yosemite, that will be a staple of the forecast until next week. wind speeds will be picking up this afternoon. even though we're going to get the sunshine with the winds onshore 10 to 20 miles per hour. temperatures will look cool again. starting off in the 50 was drizzle out towards oakland for the morning. around lunchtime 50s to some mid 60s around the bay area. mid afternoon, you will see the temperatures having a chance today, getting close to 70 in the few spots. los galos will be one of the locations. 68 degrees in san jose. upper 50s near 60 in san francisco. you can see up towards napa 70 degrees today. pleasanton near 70. then the sea breeze will weaken

a little bit more by time we get towards sunday. inland temperatures, not much warming around san francisco. just 65 degrees. mid 70s inland for the south bay into memorial day on monday. some morning clouds and these temperatures finally closer to average. we should see the numbers in the mid to upper 70s in this time of year. we may finally get there by the time we approach sunday. back to you. >> thanks, rob. a murder mystery in our nation's capital appears to be solved. authorities arrested a man in connection with the killings of a washington, d.c. family and housekeeper. authorities arrested daron wint in a box truck in which his brother was riding along with a considerable amount of cash. wint charge with first degree murder. several other people taken into custody. they believe he killed his former employer, wife, son, and family housekeeper, then set the family's d.c. mansion on fire. investigatoring started searching for wint after finding his dna on a pizza crust he
