came to an end exactly a week after the bodies of a business man, his bif, son and their housekeeper were discovered in a burning home. nbc's peter alexander has more on this. what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt, good morning. those dramatic developments takings place in washington, d.c., now in police custody the murder suspect darren dint, he was tracked down to new york and back to d.c. two vehicles were impounded by police including a box truck that law enforcement officials say inside they found at least $10,000 cash. this morning the mastiff manhunt for first-degree murder suspect daron dylon wint is owe verks police taking wint into custody in this northeast washington neighborhood. law enforcement sources tell nbc news that police followed a white chevy kruz and a box truck leaving a hotel outside washington. officers pulling over the vehicle approaching with guns

drawn and arresting wint without incident. two other men and women were also arrested. overnight investigators were combing through the chevy and the truck. wint's arrest capped a search from washington, d.c. to brooklyn, new york, where investigators believe wint traveled by bus before returning to d.c. thursday. a law enforcement official tells our nbc station wnbc that police tracked wint to brooklyn using a phone found in his girlfriend's possession when police interviewed her thursday. she told police wint was returning to d.c. where police used separate phone records to track him down according to the official. the question remains this morning did wint target the savopoulos family allegedly beating and stabbing the adult victims. police say he once worked for savopoulos's business american iron works and our station reports one of wint's relatives was fired. >> you believe there are multiple suspects or do you believe that wint was acting alone? >> we have not ruled out there are others but i can't comment

beyond that. >> reporter: according to police records, wint was arrested outside american iron works with a two-foot long machete. weapons charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty. wint was charged with assault three times. and had three unrelated and separate protective orders issued against hit. attorney thicker represented wint in previous cases a decade ago. >> i can't believe that he did it and i met him many, many times. i do not think he's the one. >> reporter: this morning this statement from the savopoulos family, we're thankful to law enforcement who worked so dill gently to bring about an arrest in this case. while it does not abate our pain we hope it restores calm and security to our neighborhood and our city. daron dylon wint expected back in court his first court appearance today. >> peter alexander, thank you very much. nbc news am list clint van zandt a former fbi profiler, good morning to you.

>> hi, matt. >> let's say hats off to the police on this. >> absolutely. >> the circumstances here, the crimes this guy is accused of committing, the fact he had to be considered extremely dangerous. he knew he had been identified so that cliche he had nothing to lose, they did this quickly. >> they did this quickly and they had to. this guy's history goes back as peter was telling us, he's got an extensive criminal history. this is the same person who his attorney said he wouldn't hurt a fly. he threatened to shoot his parents, he told a woman that he would stab her to death and her young child, saying that i know how to use a knife very well, i'm not afraid of the police. so, this is someone law enforcement had to get in custody as quick as they could. now the question is, is there a second or even a third person involved? >> other than interrogating this suspect how are police going about trying to figure that out? >> you know, one of the great things in this case was d.n.a.

we've heard it was from a pizza crust. if the you think of that crime scene you have four dead bodies in there, a fire going on, fire department pouring water in there. and yet, some good detective, atf agent was able to find that pizza box and say look, two pizzas, this guy probably didn't buy pizza for the people he is torturing. he got it for himself so they were able to find the dna, perhaps they have dna of a second suspect. they have to match it. >> we're looking at something that does not appear to be totally random because of this suspect's history with this family, and the company owned by this family. >> exactly. we've got a history here of why he would have targeted this specific house, and neighborhood. i think that people who live in the vicinity have to take some solace that there's no one on the street like this guy still,

but again, as the police chief suggested there still may be accomplices out there. this would have been a hard crime for one person to pull off. there may be more still to come. >> clint, thanks. credit to the police for bringing this manhunt to an end so quickly. thank you. the weather is a big story down south. parts of the region under water. historic rains leading to major flooding, in texas and oklahoma and al, we're talking about this all week. they are getting deluged. >> it's going through memorial day weekend, unfortunately. look at some of this video that's come in from corpus christi, texas. historic flooding, some areas in corpus christi picking up six inches of rain in a very short period of time like several hours. i-37 was shut down for a while. cars floating by the power of this water. and there is more on the way, unfortunately. some guys of course, take advantage, a paddle boat and a beer not bad. you look right now, we've got

this is a you video we're going to see a lot of this weekend with 33 million people expected to hit the roads. the reason for the increase is because of the decrease in gas prices, they are averaging around $2.66 a gallon, a dollar cheaper than this time last year. and you can also blame the harsh winter. a lot of people are ready to get their summer started. if you are flying you'll join about 2.6 million people at the airports, that's up 2.5% since last year. and if you look at the flight aware map you can see flights are going now and this is going to be a busy map. check this website to make sure there are no cancellations that could affect you. if you can't get a helicopter, i recommend downloading a great play list, be patient on the roads and download a good traffic app so maybe avoid some of the busier roads and give yourself sanity as you try to enjoy this memorial day weekend. >> my much-maligned play list from my bike ride is available. >> a lot of old man music, just telling you.

former defense secretary robert gates says the time has come for his organization to reconsider its ban on gay troop leaders. pete williams has been following this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this message from scouting's president is blunt. if the boy scouts don't change the policy on gay scout leaders themselves, on their own terms, it will be forced on them in a way they won't like. >> the battle of the boy scouts. >> reporter: after a bruising battle two years ago led to ending the ban on admitting gay young people to the scouts robert gates the former defense secretary, president of the boy scouts, says the organization must now accept that public attitudes are changing even more quickly. he says the current policy that still bans gay scout leaders will not survive. >> we must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it would be. the status quo in our movement's membership standard cannot be sustained. >> reporter: the greater new york council is already defying

the ban, last month hiring an openly gay eagle scout to be a summer camp leader. 15 years ago the supreme court upheld the scout's right to exclude an assistant scout master when he came out as gay. now he says the scouts might lose a similar case and james dale agrees. >> even if you don't exclude a young person they are suddenly not good enough, that's the wrong message for the boy scouts of america. >> reporter: gates says a change should respect the religious freedom of churches that sponsor 70% of local scout units. he oversaw the policy change on gays in the military when he was secretary of defense and that experience impresses some local scouting officials. >> this is not what we expected. but it leaders lead, bob gates is used to leading. this is not a guy who is used to sitting on the back seat and rubbing his hands and wondering what to do next. >> reporter: such a big change would have to be approved by a

vote of the scout leadership, the morman church says it will carefully consider how such a change would affect its century long association with the boy scouts. >> pete williams, thank you. natalie is joining us with more on the oil spill in california. >> officials now saying it could take months to determine what caused that huge oil spill in southern california, and nbc's hallie jackson has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. today the cleanup will nearly double in size with 300 more responders a i riving to help out with what's now a 24/7 operation. but there is that question out there. how did this spill happen in the first place? this morning unanswered questions about what caused this pipeline to break. >> they will take that piece of pipe, they will have it inspected by a third party, that could take weeks and months to get that information back.

bracing knowing it could be days before they see the true result of this spill. with more crews coming up behind us now, this beach typically would be packed heading into the holiday weekend along with another one south of where we are, both closed because of this spill. back to you. >> hallie jackson, thank you. the fbi arrested two men in southern california on suspicion of terrorism related charges. sources tell nbc news the two men are suspected of planning to travel abroad to join isis. one man was arrested at l.a.x., the other in orange county. they fit a pattern of individuals recruited through social media propaganda. a grand jury returned indictments against all six baltimore police officers in the death of freddie gray. the 25-year-old suffered a fatal spine injury while in police custody last month, and died one week later. gray's death led to days of violent protests in baltimore. the man who landed on the

34-year-old daron wint is a in police custody. he's the former employee of one of those victims. a grand jury in baltimore has now indicted all six officers originally charged in connection with the death of freddie gray. they will remain free before their indictment. heavy rains causing major flooding in texas. rescue crews called in to rescue drivers from stalled and submerged cars. al unfortunately says more rain is on the way. the headline that shocked a lot of people. a family facing one of the largest -- one of the family's that is well known in this country, the duggar's "19 kids and counting" on tlc, erica hill is here. >> good morning, the duggar's oldest son is apologizing after reports say he was investigated

on child molestation claims. now people are calling for the show to be canceled. the headlines are shocking. josh duggar accused of child molestation. in response the now 27-year-old father of three issued a statement which reads in part 12 years ago as a young teenager i acted inexcusably for which i am extremely sorry and deeply regret. i hurt others including my family and close friends. >> most people come in and say -- >> the incident occurred in 2002 just before the family began filming its first tv special "14 children and pregnant again." >> 14 children is unusual. >> police records obtained by in touch magazine which were destroyed thursday showed josh duggar was accused of repeatedly molesting five under age girls. five touched inappropriately through the night while the victims were sleeping. apparently the victims were sleeping in a common room at this time. those same records also state josh's father jim bob, knew

about the incident but waited more than a year before contacting authorities. nbc reached out to both josh and jim bob but neither responded to our requests for comment. in a separate statement posted on their facebook page jim bob and michelle duggar called this one of the most difficult times of our lives and went on to say, he made some very bad mistakes and we were shocked. the investigation was open in 2006 after a caller contacted producers from the oprah winfrey show who in turn contacted the department of human services. >> great to see you guys. >> i sat down with the duggars earlier this month before any of these allegations were made public. that interview was for a special that aired tuesday on tlc. >> we do put -- >> josh's wife anna who was pregnant with the couple's fourth child stated josh shared his, quote, past teenage mistakes two years before the couple became engaged. tlc which just wrapped its tenth season of the family's reality

show did not respond to a request for comment. there's no word on whether they knew about these allegations prior to this week. josh duggar resigned from his position with a family research council. the president released a statement saying the incidents were previously unknown to the group and this is the best decision for josh and his family at this time. duggar is not eligible for criminal charges in these cases because the statute of limitations has passed on the events in question. >> wow. >> is it true that the family the parents knew about these allegations and waited a long period of time? >> that they weren't reported and that's one of the questions that we had and one of the questions we were hoping to get answered but, again, our requests for comment to the duggar family and josh were not answered. >> people will be surprised to hear this. >> mr. roker gives us another check of the weather. >> that's right. it's -- we're entering the first unofficial weekend of summer

[ cheers and applause ] before we get to all of that, we want to get to natalie inside. she's got a check of the morn morning's top stories. >> good morning. the main suspect in the brutal mansion murder case in the nation's capital is in custody this morning. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is in washington, d.c. with more on the overnight arrest. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning to you. the dramatic developments taking place overnight, exactly one week after the savopoulos family and their housekeeper was brutally murdered in their home. the home set on fire. the arrest taking place in northeast washington, d.c. the suspect daron dylon wint picked up in a car alongside several other individuals. two vehicles were impounded. the car he was in and a box truck inside of which "the washington post" reports that authorities found at least $10,000 cash. police here tell us that they believe the suspect formerly worked for savopoulos's iron company and one of his relatives had been fired from that company. and this morning for first time

good friday morning. it's 9:26. i'm sam brock. no major damage to report from last night's north bay earthquake. crews fanning out this morning looking for problems. the 4.1 magnitude quake hit near yountville last night and shook up nerves if nothing else. the earthquake was centered about nine miles from napa. this quake is not believed to be linked to last august's 6.0 quake. the chp will issue a new report on last year's fiery head-on bush crash north of sacramento in orland off i-5. ten people died including five
