day weekend for firefighters already a vegetation fire now coming dangerously close to homes in san jose. >> the fire broke out on chula vista drive. very close to the san jose country club in allum rock park. we're live at the scene with more. mary anne? >> talk about a close call terry. this fire came dangerously close to million-dollar homes up here in the east foothills, you can see here that firefighters are hosing down and mopping up on this hillside. and they're all stationed in front of various homes out here. on the hill. in case the wind shifts this started as a grass fire. but quickly spread to three alarms. flames torched a palm tree and winds fanned the flames causing the fire to burn a chunk of the hillside. the fire came close to multimillion-dollar homes and we talked to one man who started to hose down his home. >> went on top of the house, i'm like i hope this thing doesn't

catch on fire from you know, stuff coming over with the wind. but luckily everything is good. >> a california department of forestry helicopter has been making water drops. the big concern right now is the wind and the tinder-dry grass in this area. but as of now it does appear that firefighters have been able to contain this fire no one has been evacuated. but firefighters are ready to defend these homes and are parked in each one of these homes in the area in case they need to defend this home from a fire. neighbors say it was very scary to see how close the flames were coming to their house. reporting live in san jose mary anne favro, nbc bay area news. firefighters are dealing with warmer temperatures after a week of cool and cloudy conditions. >> let's bring in meteorologist anthony slaughter for the latest. >> the past week we had

temperatures only in the low 60s each day and we actually saw sunshine today, and only got close to 7o still in the 60s, we're looking at winds about 14 miles per hour and really that's been the general trend all evening long. anywhere between 15 to 20 miles per hour. now as we head through the evening, winds will relax, dying down to 5-10 miles per hour and even overnight we're expecting calm winds across the south bay. you'll notice across the coast, the tri-valley and the north bay once again for tomorrow we're going to be looking at gusts up to about 20-25 miles per hour. and a sneak peek of that memorial day does show similar conditions, winds gusting from 20-25 miles per hour. sustained between 10-20. it will be breezy the next couple of days. we also have some of these, some towering clouds over the south bay. thunderstorms across the central valley and even here in the bay area. we'll show it to you coming up. >> you can get breaking news updates on your smartphone

download the nbc bay area app. a tanker stolen from an airport and crashed into a fence. video you'll see only on nbcbayarea.com, it happened at the reed hillview airport in san jose. staff told police that someone tried to take a jet refueling truck and drive it through the airport fence. but the truck got tangled in the fence and the thief or thieves left the scene. we caught crews trying to free the tanker earlier today. so far no one has been arrested. happening now, a major link between the peninsula and the east bay closed for construction. taking a live look at the san mateo bridge from foster city. thousands travel across this span every day. nbc bay area's christy smith is on the hay wdward side of the bridge. >> caltrans is saying they're hoping this time it isn't quite as bad as last time. they're saying the work is going well.

it's ontime the weather is cooperating, this is a continuation of the resurfaceing work we saw going on two weeks ago during the closure. caltrans is saying their thought is some people may have left early for the holiday weekend. contractors are putting down a new concrete that will be durable and is expected to last for years. the first resurfacing of the high rise section since it opened in 1967. now i caught traffic on 80 headed in today. the bay bridge a live look you can see it is backed up. other options, the golden gate. richmond-san rafael, dumbarton or 237. >> their numbers are going to increase while this is closed. we staff those bridges with extra toll takers. we assign extra chp officers and extra freeway service patrol tow trucks to take care of the overload. >> now with this closure of

course cal transsigns are up all over the freeway and have been for quite some time. over at 92 that's the last stop before the bridge closure, talked with a gas station attendant. she put up her own sign with directions to sfo. it seems many drivers from out of town didn't know about the bridge work and she says she's gone through several sheets of directions. reporting live near the toll plaza, christy smith, nbc bay area news. >> that's tough, christie. thank you so much. drivers in napa dealing with detours. take a look at the video showing damage done to the oakville crossroads bridge. cracks formed after a quake hit yountville on thursday. the bridge along the river will remain closed until further notice. caltrans had planned to replace the bridge. that project scheduled to start this summer.

there's no other reports of damage from last night's quake. coming up a full report on the status of america's bridges. and a major push for you to pay at the pump to fix those spans. a toxic algae bloom putting a damper on memorial day weekend plans for families heading to quarry lakes in fremont. it can lead to a skin rash rangers think it's being caused by the drought. one family who makes an annual visit to the popular park say they found out yesterday. and they're playing it safe. >> it's a tradition to us we've been here every year. and going into the water and kids having fun. yesterday i got an email about this. so it kind of caught us by surprise. so we're just to play it safe. we're not going to go in the water. >> as you can see the rest of the park still open for memorial day weekend. and new details tonight on day five of the clean-up of the oil spill near the coast of santa barbara. take a look at the video here

shot by our nbc chopper today of the spill. lots of spots there of the oil mess. local areas still in a state of emergency. today environmental workers did announce the oil is beginning to dissipate as animal rescues continue. at least seven animals have been spotted dead including one dolphin. it is not clear if that dolphin's death was linked to the spill. the spill happened on tuesday. it's believed to be from a ruptured oil pipeline. the company behind the spill has temporarily shut down operation the, so far 10,000 gallons of oily water have been removed from the ocean. clean-up crews say the hardest part will be clearing up oil that's on the coast. and ten people and their pets are now homeless tonight after a fire broke out in a san jose duplex this morning. this broke out on jasper street near 680 and 101. firefighters brought the fire under control about an hour later. everyone was able to get out safely. no one was harmed. the red cross provided clothes and emergency kits the cause of the fire is under investigation. gay rights supporters did not need any luck to legalize

wheelchairs and guide dogs. lawsuits filed in california and texas allege uber and lyft are violating the americans with disabilities act. because their cars are not handicap accessible. both companies deny the accusations, uber says drivers accused of discrimination are suspended or fired. while lyft says it will transport passengers with wheelclaires that can fit in the trunk or back seat without obstructing the view of the driver. well aaa predicting this memorial day weekend will be one of the busiest for drivers in a decade due to cheaper gas prices. the federal gas tax of 18 cents on every gallon you buy goes to fix highways and bridges, many in need of serious repairs. congress now working to keep the cash flowing but only for about two months. nbc's tracie potts reports that lawmakers note they need a new way to pay for the repairs. the question is now. >> see the holes in the end of the beam? >> virginia bridge engineer shows us what happens when

45,000 cars a day drive over a bridge for 30 years. water and salt water pass through that joint on a regular basis. and that causes the corrosion of the steel beams. >> the federal highway administration considers one out of every nine bridges in the u.s. structurally distinguisheficient meaning it needs repairs, maintenance or replacement. and like the i-35 bridge in minneapolis that collapsed if 2007. congress is considering another short-term fix. former transportation secretary ray lahood calls that a joke. >> you raise $1 billion a year. >> some think it doesn't make sense with more fuel-efficient cars. >> you have a million car as year going to alternative fuels or some fuels that are paying nothing. >> one group is proposing a short-term, half-cent increase in the gas tax. >> it amounts to $3 a year per

person. the average driver. and it gives us until 2016 to come up with a long-term solution. >> but engineers say that solution will cost $76 billion. and that's just to fix the bridges that need to be repaired or replaced now. the goal is to come up with a spending plan that will last four to six years, tracie potts, nbc news washington. now our investigative unit did go in-depth on the state of bridges in the bay area head to our website, nbcbayarea.com, the story is in the spotlight on the top left. in the spotlight as far as anthony slaughter is concerned, is some serious weather. hitting the midwest yet? >> yeah this massive storm system is affecting us here in the bay area. we had some thunderstorms pop up earlier this afternoon. it's a huge storm system it's got widespread showers and storms with it and lots of hail. in fact a tornado watch in effect for the denver area. you may be wondering why are you

telling me this? well the giants are actually playing the denver rockies. so yes, it is a very important that they take shelter if anything does pop up and we're watching the radar. it doesn't look like it's going to be anything in the denver area. but it does look like they could see another rain delay, possibly another few showers. it's not going to be a huge storm system. for us the same storm system producing showers and thunderstorms across the sierra and even one rogue thunderstorms that moved through the north bay earlier. moved through clear lake parallel to interstate 5, fizzled out as it went towards santa rosa. all we're left with is a good mix of sun and clouds. a little breezy as we were reporting, winds up to 20-25 miles per hour. but temperatures very comfortable. you'll notice tomorrow start of the day. a little morning fog, afternoon temperatures are going up just a little bit by about two to five degrees. 74 for the south bay tomorrow 71 for the peninsula. 77 for the east bay. san francisco, meanwhile, will be at 63. with the onshore wind. you can see it here denoted by the flag.

really flapping in the wind. it will be the same case as we head through the day tomorrow. san francisco, carnivale happening for tomorrow. parade at 9:30 a little cloudy and fog. but by the afternoon temperatures back to 67 degrees and a good time out there. on the surface map we have so much happening, we have two storm systems across the northern part of the branch of the jet stream. we have another one to the south and meanwhile we're in between every single storm system high pressure right in control. that's going to be the case through the next week or so each day, high pressure nudges a little closer to us. by monday we'll see temperatures close to 80 degrees. how is that for a summer kickoff? that will remain in place toward the rest of the upcoming week. microclimates for tomorrow low 70s for the south bay peninsula, a stark contrast. 64 for pacifica. san francisco, low 60s for tomorrow. north bay, mid 70s. oakland still cool and breezy 69 and in the tri-valley. a pair of upper 70s.
