>> good morning. we have lots for you this morning, but first we want to check your all-important holiday forecast. >> good morning. a low clouds and a drizzle. mid 50s right now. as we head to the afternoon, should see numbers closer to 70 today around san jose and up towards napa, near 60. close to 65 in oakland. coming up we'll talk about some 80s finally coming back to the extended forecast. look at that in a few minutes. >> all right, thanks, rob. new this morning, magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook buildings in tokyo and temporarily stopped the trains there. the good news so far, no apparent damage. the tsunami warning was lifts after minutes. and the airport also shut down to look at the runways.

san mateo bridge is mostly back over open. the eastern span opened before 3:30, 90 minutes ahead of schedule. the western span is still closed at this hour but crews expect to have it open at any minute. meanwhile, caltran closed it to repave the highest portion. a warning before you pick up sandwiches for a trip to the beach or a pick pick today. there's a massive meat recall affecting a sandwich chain. sandwich train lee's sandwiches had to recall more than 200,000 pounds of chicken, beef and pork. this comes after surveillance cameras caught them marking the packages as federally inspected when they were not. lee's also has several locations here in the bay area. this summer season begins and so does serious injuries.

many of which could be prevented. doctors at vanderbilt university say that memorial day is one of their busiest days of the years with victims of motorcycle, boating and swimming accidents. many of the traumas could be avoided if people would wear the helmets, wear their seat belts and cut back on the alcohol. 4:33. new details outrage on the streets of oakland over a new law that bans night time marches. overnight, dozens of activists defying that order. in total, police cited 19 people and arrested four in downtown oakland. right now you're looking at video of a similar demonstration on saturday night. all of it stemming in response to the new policy that makes it illegal to march after dark without a permit. it will cut down on the violence against the businesses. a religious symbol stolen for scrap metal. investigators say that may be the reason why someone smashed the figure of jesus off the cross at an east bay church.

this happened some time before the early morning mass wednesday at the church. it sits outside on the property and parishioners believe the bronze statue may have taken so it could be sold as scrap metal. >> a lot of people are scandalized at the idea of somebody doing something like this. we would love to have the figure back of course. >> the figure was at this church for nine years. other statues and figures on the property were not taken. it's an uphill battle, a few hundred miles down the coastline. clean-up efforts continue near santa barbara as the company behind the crude oil spill says 20% has been recovered. a ruptured pipeline spilled the oil into the ocean. an estimated 12,000 gallons of it made it into the pacific. local areas are in a state of emergency.

our leaders need to grow a spine! >> people in santa barbara county spent the weekend protesting the oil spill. about 60 people marched near the spill site. the group dressed in beach attire and gas masks are hoping to get the governor's at attention. they're calling on governor brown to ban fracking. seaworld is sending two animal workers to help the wildlife impacted by the spill. meanwhile, back in san diego, the employees are working to save the employees that are already at the facility. >> i'm getting emotional because i'm proud of this team. the time, the effort and the energy. >> all right. all eyes are on the recently rescued sea lions. they're weak and they're keeping their distance before they start

the oil removal process. another dead whale washed up. a decomposing juvenile gray whale washed up over the weekend at the sonoma portuguese beach. these photos taken by a ranger there. the press democrat reports they plan to let nature take its course and have the tide take it back out to sea. this is the fourth whale to wash up over the last six weeks. there was a sperm and a humpback whale that washed up. many are headed to the coast line today for the beaches but this is not what you're going to want to see on memorial day. a spike in great white shark sightings off the southern california coast. from santa barbara down to baja, mexico, more than a dozen great white sharks have been spotted in recent weeks. experts say despite your nerves don't worry. people are seeing juvenile sharks doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing. the young sharks are chasing sting rays and small fish which live closer to the shoreline.

and they're not looking for people. reassuring yourself of that. >> i'll take the whales over the juvenile white sharks. all right, hopefully you're up early because you have plans for the day, right, rob? >> absolutely. that's why we're all here. early this morning we are seeing temperatures in the mid 50s out there with some low clouds. little mist around san francisco and oakland and winds on shore and the marine layer very thick. just under 3,000 feet. it's made its way into liver more. clearing skies inland. the low clouds hanging out on the coast with drizzle at times there. if you're heading to the high country once again today, we're looking at isolated thunderstorms from south lake tahoe down towards yosemite. watch out for that if your plans include lake tahoe and reno today.

numbers in the low 60s near san francisco into the north bay. close to 70 in napa. the temperature trend, notice san jose, the numbers are coming up to the 60's and then they start to jump up to 79 in san jose by friday. liver more the same trend. those numbers will really start to climb up as we head towards thursday and friday. just in case you're making plans for next weekend, temperatures will be feeling a bit more like what the calendar should tell us with 70s and some 80s inland. san francisco warming up too by the end of the week, numbers climbing into the upper 60s. >> thank you very much. well, it turns out today is the busiest day of the year for one meal program. san francisco st. anthony's dining room expects more people for today's memorial than any other holiday including thanksgiving an christmas. would you believe? that's in part because some of the usual stand byes are closed. the director says many of those

served are veterans. about 3,500 people will come in today starting about 10:00. as we talk about the holiday, somber memorial day service is planned today in the south bay. for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. it will begin at 11:00 a.m. at oak hill memorial park in san jose and a wreath will be laid to honor san jose police officer michael johnson who was killed back in march. separately another memorial day service is planned for this morning in fremont. veterans groups will be joined at the cemetery on warm springs boulevard. that event begins 10:00 a.m. it will include a barbecue lunch following the service. john nash the genius who inspired "a beautiful mind" died saturday in a car crash. he was a mathematician who struggled with schizophrenia, and was chronicled in the film starring russell crowe. he won a nobel prize for

economics for his work in game theory. he and his wife died in a taxi cab crash in new jersey after returning from norway. john nash was 86 years old. 4:39, the smell of gasoline gushing from a car on the national mall. now a potentially violent scene prevented in the nation's capital. more severe weather into the southern plains that ripped roofs right off the buildings and all the flooding too. we'll show you the cars going down the street.

morning, obama is placing a wreath at the tomb of the unknown. it will be followed by a program in amphitheater. new details in the deadly storm system that barrelled through texas and oklahoma yesterday. we've learned that three people were killed in floods and tornados. one person died when heavy floods wash over san marcos, texas. at least eight people are still missing. and in oklahoma two have died. well, one of the victims in oklahoma, a firefighter who died trying to save the lives of other people. claremore firefighter jason farley is being hailed as a hero. he was helping people evacuate from their flooded homes and the waters got too high and the current too strong. he got sucked into the storm drain. his department is reeling. >> it's hard to imagine jason as not here. >> jason farley was a veteran firefighter just one month shy of 20 years on the job. oh, my god, stop stop stop. he needs to get out.

>> take a look at this suv caught in fast moving floodwaters. some good samaritans helped the driver escape just in time. because afterward that supervisor flipped over and then drifted down those waters out of sight. >> unbelievable. in houston an ef-1 tornado ripped the rip off this apartment complex. two people had to be taken to the hospital and then another twister was confirmed near dallas. that caused damage to traffic lights. >> streetlamps down. bent down like the incredible hulk came through. >> an unconfirmed tornado touched down in grady county, oklahoma. that house took a direct hit but fortunately no one was home. it's memorial day so it's also the unofficial start of summer that means the start will start to crank up, especially up if your cars. here's nbc's chris clackam with

more. >> reporter: the humane society says cases like the iraq war veteran who smashed a window to free a dog from a hot car -- >> i seen enough death and distri destruction, i didn't want anything else to happen. >> reporter: should remind you to protect your pets from the dog days of summer. >> i would never ever recommend leaving a dog or a cat in a car unsupervised. >> reporter: the inside of the car can become deadly hot, especially for our furry friends. >> put yourself in a hot car with the windows up with a fur coat on. you might have a better idea of what the manuals are going through. >> reporter: that's why pet owners are advocating shaving their cat or dog for the summer but the veterinarians say don't, because the coat protects them from some heat. like direct sunlight. so limit your pet's time outdoors when it's extremely hot or humid. make sure he has access to

the afternoon and the marine layer at about 3,000, it's a persistent ocean air conditi conditioning that's pushing in the low clouds, over the building of downtown. 3,000 feet thick. that goes way over the oakland hills into the tri valley. if you're at mount diablo, you can look down on the clouds this morning. the winds on shore are bringing in some of the areas of mist and drizzle along the coast. as it is forced to rise. some drizzle possible this morning around the peninsula. kind of chilly out of the coast. looks like santa cruz might be the one spot if you want to find sunshine later on today along the coastline. mid 50s for the morning. mostly cloudy throughout the bay area right now. we'll begin to break out in sunshine around napa and liver more. eventually, close to 70 in san jose later on today. but that's below the average high which is about 77 degrees.

you see foster city, near 60 in san francisco again. and for the north bay we'll see highs in the upper 60s and 70s. the temperatures begin to jump on up as we head to friday. same story out towards livermore. we'll get slightly above that by friday. san francisco seeing a little bit of a warm-up later this week. temperatures up to the mid to upper 60s and right now the outlook for next weekend may finally look a bit more like what we'd expect to see on the calendar. numbers perhaps getting a little hot for some folks out towards the tri valley. mid 80s next weekend and then trending cooler again as the sea breeze approaches sunday. back to you. >> rob, thank you very much. now to developing news out of the nation's capital. a man has been booked and charged without driving without a license after a bomb squad found a pressure cooker inside his car. israel shimeles was arrested. here's what happened.

shimeles left the cooker inside of his car on the national mall. obviously a lot of people walking back and forth on that stretch of land. right near the capitol building. an officer said he smelled gasoline coming from inside the car and then he call for backup. the officials didn't find anything else suspicious in the car besides the pressure cooker of course. it's unclear if shimeles will face additional charges. five people are dead, more than 60 others are hurt after a suicide truck bomb exploded in southern afghanistan overnight. it struck the gate of the local government compound and three council members and several children were among the people who were injured in the attack. so far, no groups have claimed responsibility. well, in washington this memorial day, lawmakers are questioning whether the u.s. strategy against isis is working. over the weekend a wave of well placed air strikes in the u.s. led coalition took out a key weapons warehouse.

some lawmakers say air strikes just aren't enough and that we need boots on the ground again. defense secretary ashton carter disagrees. he says the problem is that iraqis don't want to fight. >> give them training, we can give them equipment. we obviously can't give them the will to fight. >> the iraqis had gained ground since isis took ramadi a week ago, but the islamic state in iraq and syria is now the size of a small european country. isis isn't just taking over cities, they are destroying ancient ruins and killing people. more than 200 in just the last week alone in syria. many of them are children. >> they need to end the brutality there. some new england patriots fans would go all out to defend tom brady in the deflategate scandal. this is what's going on here.

one pats fan did so in her obituary, posting in the worcester telegram and gazette. it was posted online. the last line of her obit reads, quote, she would also like us to set the record straight. for her, brady is innocent. exclamation point, exclamation point. the woman apparently sadly passed but wanted to make sure on her death bed she made it clear that tom brady is not guilty. maybe she hadn't read the text messages that seems to incriminate him. stick with your team. >> well, we know bears are agile, but check this out. the bear goes to great heights to satisfy his hankering. plus a live look outside san francisco, covered in cloud cover out there. well lit as well. we have a holiday forecast coming up for you right after this break. we'll be right back.
